Billionaires ‘disappointed’ after superyachts banned from Naples port

Yacht belonging to world’s second-richest man, Bernard Arnault, falls victim to new size restrictions at Italian city’s Mergellina port

A superyacht owned by Bernard Arnault – the world’s second-richest man – has been banned from docking in Naples owing to a new regulation that has left multibillionaires “thoroughly disappointed” about missing out on staying at the southern Italian city.

Symphony, the LVMH boss’s 101 metre long, six-deck vessel was cast adrift off the coast of Naples before being told it could not be hosted at Mergellina port due to a recently introduced limitation on size.

The ban reportedly came as a surprise to the fashion tycoon , who has previously been able to dock the yacht, which contains a glass-bottomed swimming pool and outdoor cinema, at the port.

Corriere della Sera reported that the media tycoon Barry Diller was also forced to renounce Naples after the Mergellina harbourmaster banned yachts of more than 75 metres in length for security reasons.

A source at the port said the move was “incomprehensible” given that megayachts had been able to dock there for the past 20 years, and that Naples would miss out on the type of visitor who brought some lustre to a city that “often makes the news for negative reasons”.

“I am getting many letters from magnates saying they’re thoroughly disappointed that they can’t dock in Naples any more,” the source added.

One of the letters, from a company that charters a yacht owned by a Turkish billionaire and is registered in the Cayman Islands, said: “Our boat measures 85 metres and I have seen larger ones moored there without any problem. Why is this no longer possible? Big yachts bring money, they bring jobs, and it’s really regrettable that they can no longer stop in Naples.”

Business unions have also criticised the new regulation.

“There are many consequences,” Costanzo Jannotti Pecci, the president of the Naples unit of Unione Industriali, told Il Mattino. “There is a feeling that superyachts mustn’t come to Naples. There even seems to be a lack of awareness of the pleasure that a tycoon might get from our city. The fame of a city such as Naples increases through these people.”

Massimo Luise, who manages a pier at Mergellina that hosts luxury yachts, told Corriere della Sera that while he respected the rules, the economic repercussions for Naples were considerable.

“It’s a shame for Naples, a special city full of culture and tradition which can no longer welcome guests of the calibre of Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Jeff Bezos and Jennifer Lopez, who over the years have come here,” he said.

While Naples may be out of bounds, the rich and famous have been attracting attention as they enjoy other parts of Italy . Last week, a Spanish tourist and fan of DiCaprio almost drowned after attempting to swim to a superyacht moored off Forte dei Marmi in Tuscany to get a glimpse of the actor, who was onboard.

Arnault respinto a Napoli

"Colpa" del nuovo regolamento della Capitaneria di Porto, introdotto quest'anno. Per questioni di sicurezza nessuna nave che superi i 75 metri di lunghezza può avere accesso al porto di Mergellina. Lo yacht "Symphony" di Arnault arriva a 101 metri. E con suo grande stupore, quando ha chiesto di poter entrare ha ricevuto un "no". Una novità per il tycoon, che già in passato aveva sostato con la stessa nave nel porto napoletano.

«Il Golfo di Napoli è la baia marittima più trafficata al mondo, dopo il porto  di Hong Kong , nella quale insistono anche quattro aree marine protette. Insomma noi difendiamo l'uomo dal mare e il mare dall'uomo». L' ammiraglio Pietro Vella è il direttore marittimo della Campania e il Comandante del Porto di Napoli . È lui che messo al bando i maxi yacht dal molo di Mergellina, l'unico porto turistico di Napoli aperto alle grandi imbarcazioni. Fissando il limite a 75 metri. E lasciando fuori, dunque, anche il maxi yacht Simphony di Bernard Arnault e quello del signor Tripadvisor, Berry Diller. 

Quello di Napoli è un porto strategico nel Mediterraneo , che insiste in una città che ha servizi di rilievo - come l'aeroporto - e cha è una base utile dalla quale spingersi verso mete diverse. Dalle isole del Golfo alle Eolie, dalle Pontine alla Sardegna: una base di grande appeal che riserva ai suoi ospiti il valore aggiunto di una città che ha molto da offrire in termini di arte e attrazioni.

«Limite di sicurezza»

«Questa disposizione che fissa il limite ai maxi yacht non è una questione di burocrazia, ma di sicurezza . La pubblica amministrazione ha nella sicurezza il suo compito primario e la mia esperienza, il mio ruolo parlano chiaramente del fatto che per me questa è stata sempre una priorità - dice Vella -. Ho ricevuto e sto ricevendo pressioni continue per questa vicenda . Ma sulla sicurezza non si arretra». Eppure fino allo scorso anno l'ingresso al molo Luise, anche a barche di cento metri, era concesso. «In passato in qualche circostanza, per qualche caso specifico, sono state concesse deroghe alle norme ordinarie di sicurezza. Ma le valutazioni ci portano a dire che una barca del genere, con la catenaglia di prua e la passerella a poppa, arriva a 125 metri e dunque non ci sono proprio le condizioni minime di sicurezza».

Faro oscurato

La spiegazione dell'ammiraglio è dettagliata: «Una nave così ormeggiata oscura il fanale verde a chi entra in porto , che vede solo il rosso e va verso terra - insiste il comandante del porto di Napoli - a mia valutazione non è stata riferita alla possibilità di ormeggiare, semplicemente,  ma alla verifica della relazione fra i vari tipi di traffico e delle condizioni precarietà del porto. Ci si ritrova in un safari. E credo che neanche Arnault o altri - J ennifer Lopez, Di Caprio o tutti quelli che si dice non potranno più attraccare a Napoli - vogliano muoversi a discapito dei principi di sicurezza. Le autorizzazioni provvisorie si riferiscono ad un momento diverso e alla luce delle simulazioni dinamiche fatte per ben due volte, con il Capo pilota e vice capo pilota del porto, che hanno evidenziato che i parametri di sicurezza non ci sono».

La soluzione possibile

Ma c'è una apertura. «Se dalla barca di Bernard Arnault o da altre si rivolgono a noi - aggiunge Vella - non escludo di poter trovare soluzioni ai moli 20 e 21 . Che sono un riferimento anche per le navi da crociera e che, se liberi, possono ospitare anche i maxi yacht. In attesa di soluzioni strutturali che potranno arrivare dal molo San Vincenzo. Per il resto ho fatto bene a volerci vedere chiaro, prima che ci scappasse un morto. Perché il rischio è concreto per i diportisti e anche per l'aliscafo diretto alle Eolie che parte e arriva da Mergellina. Non possono e non devono prendersela con noi. Se una autostrada è stretta se la prendono con la polizia stradale? Questi yacht in quel molo sono come un grande pullman parcheggiato al centro di un incrocio».

Il divieto per i “superyacht” di attraccare a Napoli

È stato introdotto per questioni di sicurezza: tra i primi a cui è stato impedito l'ormeggio c'è l'imprenditore bernard arnault.

Venerdì sera lo yacht dell’imprenditore francese Bernard Arnault – capo della multinazionale del lusso LVMH e uno degli uomini più ricchi al mondo – era arrivato al largo di Napoli per attraccare a Mergellina, il porto turistico di riferimento della città per le barche di grandi dimensioni. Dopo poco la sua richiesta di ormeggiare è stata respinta, nonostante in passato la stessa barca avesse più volte attraccato nel porto. Il motivo è una modifica al regolamento della capitaneria di porto che è stata introdotta solo quest’anno e che impedisce alle imbarcazioni di lunghezza superiore ai 75 metri di ormeggiare a Mergellina.

In una lettera pubblicata sul Mattino lunedì, l’ammiraglio Pietro Vella, comandante della capitaneria di porto di Napoli, ha spiegato che la modifica si è resa necessaria per questioni di sicurezza. Dopo due simulazioni effettuate nei mesi scorsi, erano emersi problemi di visibilità per le navi che entravano a Mergellina: in particolare, ha spiegato Vella, la presenza di grandi yacht ormeggiati impediva alle imbarcazioni in entrata di vedere uno dei segnali luminosi chiamati in gergo tecnico “fanali”, che si trovano nei porti e indicano la direzione da tenere per entrare. Nei porti ci sono due fanali di colori diversi, quello rosso che le barche devono mantenere alla propria sinistra e quello verde che deve essere a destra. Secondo Vella gli yacht di grandi dimensioni impedirebbero di vedere correttamente il fanale verde. «Chi viene verso l’approdo vede il fanale rosso e per cogliere anche il verde per indirizzarsi verso l’imboccatura deve spingersi molto verso terra con il rischio di incorrere nei bassi fondali o in un campo boe», ha detto Vella.

Lo yacht di Arnault, che si chiama “Symphony” e batte bandiera delle isole Cayman, è lungo 101 metri e quindi rientra tra le imbarcazioni a cui è vietato ormeggiare a Napoli. Barche così lunghe sono chiamate informalmente in ambito nautico “superyacht” (o anche “megayacht”), ma non è una definizione tecnica e non c’è una misura standard per classificarle: solitamente basta che siano più lunghe di 40 metri per essere chiamate in questo modo.

I giornali scrivono che nelle scorse settimane un episodio simile era successo anche a Barry Diller, capo tra le altre cose di Tripadvisor e Expedia, che aveva dovuto allontanarsi dal Golfo di Napoli con il suo veliero Eos (di circa 90 metri) dopo il rifiuto di attraccare a Mergellina.

Il caso di Arnault è stato commentato molto criticamente da alcuni per via delle ripercussioni economiche dovute alla mancata presenza di yacht come il “Symphony” (il solo ormeggio in passato costava diverse migliaia di euro al giorno). Per esempio   Massimo Luise, manager che gestisce uno dei moli di Mergellina dove attraccavano i “superyacht“, ha detto al Corriere che la modifica del regolamento comporterà perdite per l’indotto tra i 50 e i 100mila euro al giorno.

Ma già da giorni in città si discute della questione: la scorsa settimana ne aveva parlato in un’intervista al  Mattino Costanzo Jannotti Pecci, presidente dell’Unione industriali di Napoli, che aveva detto che «i top player del business approdano a Mergellina per motivi di privacy e di security. Sulle loro imbarcazioni si svolgono meeting di decine di persone, lontani da occhi indiscreti. […] Per Napoli e la Campania il risultato diretto, in termini economici, è quantificabile in decine di milioni di investimenti».

A Jannotti Pecci ha risposto sempre l’ammiraglio Vella nella lettera al Mattino, dicendo che il porto di Mergellina potrebbe ospitare un solo yacht di grandi dimensioni e che pensare che il divieto di ormeggio possa impedire la conclusione di accordi commerciali «come se questi potessero concludersi solo con quella nave ormeggiata in quella posizione» è un «aspetto che appare refrattario ad ogni principio di logica e credibilità». Vella ha anche ricordato come sia in corso uno studio per ampliare un altro spazio, il molo San Vincenzo, in modo che possa in futuro accogliere in sicurezza i “superyacht”.

Il suo patrimonio è stimato intorno ai 220 miliardi di dollari.

Ecco il motivo che ha spinto il supermiliardario Bernard Arnault a lasciare il golfo di Napoli con il suo mega dello yacht Symphony, lungo 101 metri e del valore di non meno di 300 milioni di euro. La nave era nello specchio di acque davanti al Castel dell’Ovo già da ieri mattina e quando ha chiesto di attraccare al molo Luise di Mergellina, tradizionale approdo delle barche di lusso, è arrivato il no dell’autorità portuale. 

Arnault è il proprietario di Lvmh, multinazionale che comprende Christian Dior, Bulgari, Fendi, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot. Il suo patrimonio è stimato intorno ai 220 miliardi di dollari. La polemica ha dato l’assist politico al centrodestra. «Napoli paga il mancato ammodernamento del porto, trasformato in succursale di quello di Salerno. È irragionevole attribuire le responsabilità alla capitaneria la quale si è limitata ad applicare le leggi. Le responsabilità, piuttosto, sono di chi scientemente non ha sviluppato il porto di Napoli. Fino a quando non si comprenderà che Napoli è capoluogo di regione e, in quanto tale, merita un porto all’altezza, saremo costretti a respingere le imbarcazioni di lusso», l’attacco di Fulvio Martusciello, coordinatore regionale di Forza Italia in Campania.

Symphony At Sea: A Glimpse Into LVMH CEO’s $150 Million Superyacht

Bernard Arnault, rumored to have been the third richest man in the world, owns one of the grandest yachts at sea. The impressive superyacht boasts a vast interior and eye-catching aesthetic that make it notable on any list. Mr. Arnault is the CEO of the French luxury goods company LVMH (Louis Vuitton, Moet, Hennessy ) and has caught the attention of yachting enthusiasts with his exceptional seabound treasure.

In 2015, the high-end yacht builder, Feadship, built the $150 million superyacht. Mr. Arnault purchased it, and named it Symphony , a musical metaphor for the billionaire’s undisturbed ocean getaway. It ranks in the top 50 of biggest yachts in the world measuring roughly 333 feet with a max speed of 21 knots, so it’s no wonder that it continues to catch stares wherever it’s docked.

On top of that, the elaborate interior makes this sizable structure stand out from the rest. Zuretti Interior Design, a French studio specializing in luxury superyachts, took on the task of perfecting it. The artisan space was inspired by residences in Bali and Thailand. The walls and floors were covered in light wash wood panels that suggest a hint of ‘upscale tropicale’ . Meanwhile, neutral furniture with gold decor tells a luxe story. On the outside, she has a clean navy blue trim close to sea level that draws the eye to her bright white finish.

This stunning yacht can house nearly 20 guests and has space below deck for a crew of 38. The glamorous owner’s suite includes a private deck with access to an intimate sauna experience and even better views.

This mega yacht has no shortage of amusements. The aft deck has an incredible glass-bottom pool while the bow is taken over by a sleek helipad. A fully-equipped gym also resides here along with a pop-up golf tee. Toys in tow include inflatables, a slide, jet skis, and sea bobs.

Last we heard, the billionaire’s not chartering his vessel, but his own personal guests will take interest in some of the unique features. Those curious about the mechanics behind the craft can have a museum-like experience on board with access to a massive display that tracks speed, rpm, and even allows a glimpse at the underwater camera.

Mr. Arnault has connections in the industry, but he remains quite private amidst it all. Not only is he a shareholder in Dior, but he owns the yacht shipyard Royal Van Lent where his yacht was built. His wallflower behavior spurred his desire to trade in his private jet , but thankfully, Symphony encompasses the calm that he continually seeks. It’s doubtful he’ll part ways with her anytime soon.

French businessman, investor, and art collector Bernard Arnault is the chairman and chief executive of the world's largest luxury goods company, LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton. He is currently the third richest person in the world and the richest person in Europe. The French fashion tycoon is one the world's ultimate taste-makers and his ownership of the super yacht Symphony is a proof that he likes the combination of class and beauty which comes with a price. Bernard Arnault is the proud owner of the largest Feadship to be ever made according to the Yacht Habor. The CEO of the French multinational luxury goods conglomerate, LVMH, owns the luxury mega yacht which is worth $150 million. It is not surprising that Bernard Arnault would spend so much for a luxury yacht since he has a stunning net worth of $93.5 billion and currently among the top ten billionaires in the world and recognized as the richest man in France.

Arnault first ventured into the yacht industry back in 2008 when he led the acquisition of the British yacht manufacturer called Princess Yachts. Since then LVMH has been working closely with the world leading brand of custom-built luxury mega-yachts, Feadship. It was in 2015 when Arnault decided to buy Symphony for $150 million. The super yacht has about estimated running costs of $10 to 15 million per year and currently not available for charter.

The Superyacht Symphony comes with eight huge staterooms that can fit about sixteen guests and a comfortable berthing that can accommodate about 27 crew members on board the yacht. It also has a private deck for the owner. It is created to accommodate about thirty six passengers. The exteriors of the yacht were designed by the world class renowned company Tim Heywood Design. The interiors on the other hand were aesthetically designed with the décor of the yacht being done by the one and only Zuretti Interior Design. The Symphony has been constructed by the Feadship at the Royal Van Lent Shipyard as a simple Project 808.

The luxury yacht is currently among the most sought-after private vessels . Bernard Arnault’s luxury vehicle at the sea is far more than par excellence. It is powered by a 2,415 hp Wärtsilä engine which comes with a powerful battery bank and about three generator sets. It also houses the string of amenities of the yacht such as the appointed entertainment areas, the al fresco bar area for parties and events and the state-of-the-art kitchen that is serving stunning decadent French delights. It is also a 101-meter luxury yacht that was built at the Royal Van Lent Shipyard. Symphony has a steel hull that has an aluminum superstructure. The yacht has complied with the amended Passenger Yacht Code (PYC).

The luxury yacht is said to be an eco-friendly yacht which uses a hybrid propulsion technology and powered by a 4x MTU 16V4000M73 engine. Due to the advance hybrid propulsion technology, the yacht can store energy in its battery bank that can work together with its diesel engines. The main engine on the other hand works hand in hand with the generators and modern battery bank that were attached to the yacht. It uses about 30% less than the energy that a normal yacht uses. The maximum speed of the yacht is about 21 knots and the cruising speed is about 10 knots. The Symphony was ranked 50 th out of the top 100 superyacht around the world with a 101.5 meter six deck. The structure of the yacht was made by the De Voogt Naval Architects. The floors and ceilings of the yacht are encased in a light wood panel which was complemented by the w ooden furniture with accents of gold and natural tones .

The Symphony contains luxury features such as the 6 meter glass-bottom swimming pool located on the main deck, an outdoor cinema that was aesthetically placed on the bridge deck and a stunning Jacuzzi on the yacht’s sundeck. The owner’s deck is also equipped with two bathrooms, sauna, forward terrace that has a Jacuzzi as well, a private office space, a spacious lounge and dressing rooms. Since the wife of Arnault, Helene Mercier, is a concert pianist, there is also a piano on board. The owner’s deck also has deck area perfect for lounging with a dining table that can accommodate about 20 people. It also has two elevators for passengers to use and one elevator even features a 15-metre interactive video screen which can play video footages upon the request of the guests.

Bernard Arnault’s “Symphony” Super Yacht Is First Feadship To Cross 100 Metres

The 105 metre luxury superyacht ‘Symphony’ is the first Feadship to cross 100m and it is now owned by the richest man in France, LVMH CEO Arnault

Ranked 50 out of the world’s top 100 superyachts, the 101.5 metre six deck “Symphony” luxury super yacht with its “bones” by De Voogt Naval Architects and designed by Tim Heywood Design is the largest Feadship ever built in 2015 (a record since been broken by the 110 metre Feadship 1001). The Symphony is also the first Feadship to be fully compliant with the new Passenger Yacht Code regulations, allowing more than the usual twelve passengers.

Interior designed by Zuretti Interior Design, it was the first Feadship to cross the 100-metre mark, and it was revealed to be owned by Bernard Arnault, one of the richest men in world.

The CEO of French multinational luxury goods conglomerate, LVMH, owns the largest Feadship to be ever built according to Yacht Habor . According to Forbes, Bernard Arnault with a net worth of US$93.5 billion, is one the world’s top ten billionaires and the richest man in France. Unsurprisingly, the man who has been shaping the luxury world for 35 years is bound to own a luxury mega yacht worth US$150 million.

Arnault’s previous yacht Amadeus was sold in 2016 for an asking price of US$50 million euros and has recently donated €200 million to the rebuilding fund for Notre Dame de Paris . The “Symphony” yacht is worthUS$150 million.

Designed by Tim Heywood and built by Feadship in the Netherlands as Project 808, Symphony has a gross tonnage of near 3,000GT. With an aluminium structure, the yacht can house 36 passengers and is an eco-friendly yacht, using 30 per cent less fuel than other similar yachts.

Symphony has a couple of luxury features such as a 6 metre glass-bottom swimming pool on main deck, an outdoor cinema on bridge deck, and a jacuzzi on the sundeck. While the   owner’s deck is equipped with double bathrooms, dressing rooms and a sauna, a forward terrace with Jacuzzi, a private office and a study, a lounge and a spacious aft deck area for lounging with a dining table for 20.

Arnault interest for the yacht industry dates back to 2008 when Arnault ventured into the yacht industry by leading an acquisition of British yacht manufacturer, Princess Yachts which saw L Capital, a fund controlled by LVMH, gain a 70 per cent controlling stake in Princess Yachts . Feadship, the world leading brand of custom-built luxury mega-yachts, has been working with LVMH closely since 2008.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.

The press conference, which was held today at the Lotte Hotel in Moscow, had also the objective of introducing attending journalists and yachting enthusiasts to the main new products launched by the Ferretti Group over the last few months, namely: motor yacht Ferretti 870 , Ferretti 690 yacht , and the project of the new flagship Ferretti 960 superyacht for the Ferretti Yachts brand; luxury yacht Pershing 82 ’ and superyacht Pershing 108’ New Edition for Pershing; Riva 63’ Virtus and the project of the new Riva flagship, 122’ Mythos yacht , as well as the entire range of the Itama, Bertram and Mochi Craft brands.

The yachts launched over the last few months by CRN – the Group’s brand specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium yachts between 40 and 90 metres – were also presented during the conference: the two superyachts: CRN superyacht Jade (60 metres long) and CRN mega yacht Chopi Chopi (80 metres long), the latter being one of the largest pleasure vessels ever built in Italy and the largest one ever built by the Ancona-based shipyard.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
