Our staff members can identify some of the most beautiful spots here as well as some of the finest areas for snorkelling and sailing.

Avatar is a 67ft  Sailing Trimaran that was built for racing but now has been converted to take 26 guests on a sailing holiday around the stunning Whitsundays Islands. With plenty of deck areas to soak up the sun as well as a smooth, speedy and comfortable ride, this is one of the best ways to sail in Australia.

What To Expect During Your Avatar Whitsundays Tour

Not only is this beach 7km long and covered in white silica sand it has crystal clear waters engulfed with wildlife This means you can experience your piece of paradise exploring on a secluded island beach! A Sailing Tour on Avatar around the Whitsunday Islands is a very social experience.

Most of our guests range in age from 18 to 35. Our tour guides will keep you entertained with their knowledge of the area and make your sailing tour a fun experience that you won’t forget. Snorkelling adventures with the Avatar Tour are conducted in sheltered areas of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The snorkelling is very relaxed. Rather than having to deal with deep undertows or waves, this area is very sheltered by the islands. This makes for a very comfortable sail as well as excellent snorkelling locations. Explore the crystal-clear waters and experience what ocean life is like on the great barrier reef.

You may spot a turtle, and you will defiantly see a lot of beautiful tropical fish! With spectacular views of the islands, the great barrier reef, Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet Lookout there are plenty of photo opportunities with Avatar Whitsundays. With this 2-day 2-night sailing tour, you can soak up the sun in style and see many sights off the coast that many travellers do not get to experience.

  • No large backpacks or suitcases are allowed on-board our vessels. Please only bring bags the same size as an airline carry-on.
  • Most hostel/hotels in Airlie beach have bag storage facilities for bigger bags.
  • There is NO bag storage at the marina and you face missing your departure if you bring bags that are not allowed.

WHAT TO BRING:

  •  In a small soft bag (enviro safe), we suggest that you bring the following:
  •  Travel voucher from your booking agent.
  •  Light clothing/warm clothing in cooler months (May – September)
  •  Sunscreen (30+ highly recommended)

WHAT NOT TO BRING

  •  Sleeping bags or pillows.
  •  Passport or important travel documents
  • Shampoo and conditioner (for environmental purposes)
  • Plastic bags (they kill our wildlife and smother our coral)
  • OzSail is not responsible for any property you take on board the vessel. In particular, we strongly encourage you to take waterproof cameras rather than expensive digital cameras. Your electrical equipment will be ruined if it comes in contact with saltwater.

If you haven’t already confirmed with us about food allergies and/or dietary requirements, please call us ASAP to modify your booking.

All main meals are included. However, if you think the fresh air might make you extra hungry, you may want to bring some extra snacks as well as any other flavoured drink such as orange juice or soft drinks.

Welcome to the tropics! Although our winters may be cooler, our summer months (November -March) can be extremely hot and humid, especially downstairs on a boat. Unless you are accustomed to living in this climate, you may find it slightly uncomfortable, especially at night when you are sleeping. Please be prepared for this.

ALCOHOL, SOFT DRINKS AND BOTTLED WATER

An alcohol policy is in place on Mandrake. Each guest can take a maximum of 24 cans of beer OR 4 ltrs cask wine (goon) OR 1 ltr of spirits, any more than this will NOT be allowed on board. WATER, TEA, AND COFFEE

We provide tap water on all our vessels, however, it isn’t cold and some people don’t like the taste of it. During our summer months, we strongly encourage you to bring bottled water. We recommend at least 2 litres per day. Tea and coffee breaks are generally in the morning and afternoon.

TRAVEL SICKNESS

If you are not sure whether or not you may suffer from travel sickness, we suggest taking travel sickness tablets. Our trained crew will assist as much as possible in making you comfortable but they are not allowed to provide you with any medication.

SNORKELLING GEAR

Masks and snorkels are all included in the price of your trip and will be distributed at the meeting point.

LYCRA SUITS & WETSUITS

Wearing a Lycra stinger suit will prevent UV exposure and significantly reduce your risk to marine stingers. OzSail requires that all passengers wear a full-length stinger suit or wetsuit if you wish to swim and or snorkel from our vessels.

You will be fitted at the meeting point and these are all-inclusive in your ticket price.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We strongly encourage all guests travel with travel insurance with coverage for the following situations: Damaged property (You will be on a boat surrounded by seawater).

Please ensure that you read all of the above carefully.

On the date of departure, please ensure you are at the meeting point at Abell Point Marina (South Village) before the scheduled departure time. It is critical that the vessel leaves on time.

It will take you 20 mins to walk to Abell Point Marina from the main street of Airlie Beach. If the ocean is on your right-hand side you are walking in the right direction.

Whether you’re looking forward to snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef or simply soaking up the sun on the sands of Whitehaven or Airlie Beach, OzSail can make it happen. Once your holiday plans are made, you’ll want to be sure your departure information is accurate and up-to-date. We can help.

All of our vessels leave from Coral Sea Marina (Meeting Point C) under the umbrellas on the right-hand-side of the two buildings. View direction

Our departure times for Mandrake and Avatar are typically the same:

*Avatar – Tues, Thurs, Sat @ 11:00A

*Mandrake – Tues, Thurs, Sat @ 2:30P

Our Spank Me tour typically departs Sun, Wed, Fri. However, the departure time varies due to the tides. You will be sent a text message within 72hrs of departure advising you of any changes.

We advise all of our guests to call (0499 697 245) and reconfirm their booking 48hrs before departure so we can ensure we have all the necessary dietary requirements/food allergies and ensure you meet at the correct time.

No large backpacks or suitcases are allowed on-board our vessels. Please only bring bags the same size as an airline carry-on. Most hostel/hotels in Airlie beach have bag storage facilities for bigger bags. There is NO bag storage at the marina and you face missing your departure if you bring bags that are not allowed. WHAT TO BRING:

In a small soft bag (enviro safe), we suggest that you bring the following: Travel voucher from your booking agent. Light clothing/warm clothing in cooler months (May – September) Swimsuit Hat Sunscreen (30+ highly recommended) Bath towel and beach towel Sunglasses Insect repellent Favourite music Alcohol (no glass please): NO MORE THAN 24 cans of beer OR 4 ltrs cask wine OR 1 ltr spirits. WHAT NOT TO BRING

Glass bottles or red wine. Sleeping bags or pillows. Passport or important travel documents Shampoo and conditioner (for environmental purposes) Plastic bags (they kill our wildlife and smother our coral) OzSail is not responsible for any property you take on board the vessel. In particular, we strongly encourage you to take waterproof cameras rather than expensive digital cameras. Your electrical equipment will be ruined if it comes in contact with saltwater. MEALS

All alcohol, soft drinks, and bottled water must be purchased prior to boarding your vessel. (Please note, we do not allow glass bottles on board).

Medical emergencies including ambulance cover

Travel cancellation & interruption

Please ensure that you read all of the above carefully.

On the date of departure, please ensure you are at the meeting point at Abell Point Marina (South Village) before the scheduled departure time. It is critical that the vessel leaves on time.

It will take you 20 mins to walk to Abell Point Marina from the main street of Airlie Beach. If the ocean is on your right-hand side you are walking in the right direction.

TRAVEL DATES

At the end of your sailing adventure, OzSail has booked you a VIP table at Beaches Backpackers at 6:30 p.m. for dinner and drinks followed by free entry and more VIP treatment at Paddy’s Shenanigans, Airlie’s iconic party spot.

We recommend that you get to Airlie Beach one day before departure and leave Airlie Beach the day after you return to land, to enjoy the after-party.

  • Roam13807735929 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful! Me and my friend had the best time on the Whitsunday Sailing!! The captain Alex ensured we got to all the snorkling places and the Whitehaven beach first, so we got it all for ourselves. He shared wonderful stories and information about the places and made us feel completely safe on the boat! The crew also did an amazing job, plus made dinner from scratch! I enjoyed each second of this trip! Read more Written 4 March 2024
  • anothertraveller2024 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Must-Do Adventure Our crew of Alex (exactly what you’d imagine a skipper would look/act like), Savannah, and Josh (or Joel, or George, depending on the time of day) were amazing. The food was delicious, and I loved participating as a “mast-woman”. Although beautiful, experiencing Whitehaven Beach was easily topped by the three spectacular snorkelling locations. Experience the possibility of seeing all kinds of fish, sea eagles, sting rays, turtles, dolphins, and manatees. You may also get the chance to sleep on the deck under the stars. Be aware of the presence of wet season during this time of year, prior to booking, but find comfort in knowing the crew will not let bouts of rain stop them. If you’re looking for a short adventure, I would highly recommend sailing with OzSails. It’s a great way to meet people and see another part of the Great Barrier Reef. Although you may question your decision when you find out about the 1 minute shower rule, I can assure you, it’s completely worth it. Read more Written 10 February 2024

We were very well looked after and felt very safe and at ease. The skipper informed us of various facts surrounding the whitsundays and general facts about marine life! The food was beautiful and there was plenty left for 2nds. The beds were very very warm which we were told before however I think a small fan in each bunk would have helped any sleep issues with the heat - if you are thinking of booking on - 100% in summer bring a clip on fan as it will be a life saver. Who travels with us

Is this tour for me.

Our tours are made up of small groups with a range of ages, nationalities and backgrounds. Generally people who travel with us are between 20 and 45, though we also get alot passengers much older onboard - everyone is welcome! On tour we get equally as many males as females and everyone shares an enthusiasm for the out doors, nature, adventure and culture.

Our tours are for those wanting to really explore Australia and its many facets. Whether we are camping by a billabong in Kakadu National Park or sharing a cabin in Tasmania, our travellers want more than just a site seeing tour. They are chasing a hands on experience.

The trips are packed with many highlights and the pace can be fast - although there’s always time to chill out, have a cold beer ( or wine! ) and soak up your surroundings.

As always, if in doubt then contact us directly with your concerns.

What type of groups go on these tours?

Onboard our tours there are usually around 5 - 24 people ( depending on the tour and destination ). Lost In Australia's travellers want to explore the country and develop a real sense for the land, nature and its people. We travel in small groups which allows us to get from destination to destination quickly and effortlessly whilst being flexible and free!

Is it ok to travel alone on one of these tours?

We have many travellers jumping onboard our tours by themselves. Those travelling by themselves are very much welcomed and encouraged. During your outback adventure you'll meet new and interesting people and forge relationships that will last a life time.

Those who do travel by themselves will probably be sharing a room with a travelling companion of the same sex, but even if you do get your own room, you won't be charged extra. For camping tours, generally there are enough tents available that you can have your own if you choose to.

For more information please contact us directly.

How many people will be on tour?

Group sizes vary from tour to tour. You can find the size of your group by checking out information at the top right hand corner of the tour page. Group sizes range of 5 - 24 people.

Is there an age limit?

We get a large range of travellers from all over the world and from a very large age range. We get people of all ages joining these trips; generally our travellers vary between 21 - 45 though we also get many happy travellers in their 60s and 70s. Some tours however have a restriction on children under the age of 16 - 18. This will depend on the destination so please email us for more info.

Cost and Fees

What does "paid locally" mean.

Some tours require you to pay national park fees directly, in cash, to the tour guide on the morning of departure. Rest assured this will be subtracted from the tour price when reserving your tour.

Will I need additional money?

Visitors are advised to bring some cash as ATMs and banks can be few and far between depending on where we are during the trip. Its handy to have some extra cash as we do stop by local shops and cafe.

Do I need to tip our guide?

If you had an amazing time on tour and wish to tip the guide, then that is completely up to you. However, tipping is not customary in Australia and is not at all expected.

Are there any hidden fees I need to know about?

Our tour prices are completely transparent. There are no additional fees involved that are not included in the overall tour price shown. If you wish to do optional activities such as helicopter rides or wildlife safaris, then an extra cost may be needed. However, this will always be made clear at the time of your booking.

Whilst on tour

Can i book extra accommodation for the start and end of the tour.

What is the weather like on the east coast?

The east coast of Australia is an extremely long piece of coastline and it traverses very different weather patterns, from the temperate south in Sydney to the tropical north in Cairns. Irrespective of the season, In summer, if you are travelling between Sydney and Cairns, you are probably going to either experience wetter more humid weather nearer Cairns. In winter months, clear and dry conditions near cairns and cooler and wetter weather nearer Sydney.

Can I travel with children?

Is there drinking water on the boat.

Yes, all our vessels have fresh tap water suitable for drinking.  If you prefer bottled water you can purchase this on board most vessels. Remember to drink at least 2 litres of water per person per day!

Yes you can have your own cabin, just look for one of our vessels with this option, some with their own private facilities.  The following are the types of accommodation that our vessels offer:

  • Shared single – single bed in a dorm situation
  • Shared double – double bed in a dorm situation
  • Private twin – two single beds in a private cabin
  • Private double – double bed in a private cabin
  • Private Stateroom – double bed in a large private cabin

This can be booked through our "Optional Extras" Section.

Will there be jelly fish?

At certain times of year ‘dangerous’ jellyfish inhabit these waters and passengers should take care for their own safety.  'Stinger Season' in the Whitsundays runs every year generally from October through to May. During this period, jellyfish can be found in the waters around the mainland, islands and have occasionally been found out on the reef.  Passengers entering the water do so at their own risk and the owners or operators of the vessel will not be liable for any personal injury, illness, death or any other consequences whatsoever of passengers being stung by jellyfish. To minimise this risk you will be provided with a full length protective ‘Stinger Suit’ to wear whilst swimming and snorkelling during the cruise.  We highly recommend these be worn all year round, some vessels make it compulsory for the safety of the guests. Not only are they for safety but they keep you warm in the water, act as sun protection and are a great aid for buoyancy while snorkelling.

Meals / Allergies

We have a great menu for you, however we do need to be informed at check-in if you have special dietary requirements. If you have any medical conditions/food allergies please advise at booking and again at check-in.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

Welcome to the 252nd episode of  TV’s Top 5 ,  The Hollywood Reporter’ s TV podcast.

Every week, hosts  Lesley Goldberg  (West Coast TV editor) and  Daniel Fienberg  (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).

How danai gurira pulled off that emotional 'walking dead' reunion, carlos alcaraz tops rafael nadal in tiebreak at inaugural netflix slam in las vegas.

Let’s go back to before the pandemic. Walk us through your decision to leave The Walking Dead after season 10. What made the timing right?

It’s funny, they say seven is the number of completion. I had done seven seasons — it’s eight months of the year that you’re giving to this thing. I loved the commitment and the amount of time and energy it took. That’s what attracted me to the show. It just felt like the time was right to open myself up to other things and to explore other things and open up literally a different type of time in my life.

Did it feel like a closing of a chapter versus a pause while you did other things?

It was very clear that I was not done with her. Andy had already left, and he was not done with Rick, so it was clear he was coming back with the movies. It was always planned that I would do that with him, though we didn’t announce that. When I started negotiating out of the show, that was a part of it — that I would come back. We just didn’t know when and how; it took a different form than we planned.

The Ones Who Live was originally designed to be three feature-length films that Universal had signed on to distribute theatrically. What prompted the change?

How did co-creating the series with the three of you work?

We did have a very unified idea about what we should make sure happens. The idea, which initially was Andy’s, was this is a love story of Rick and Michonne. When we got in the room, it was about the nitty gritty of turning a Walking Dead show into an epic love story. That was fun to do. I think I was more the expert on love stories between the three of us, so it was an interesting navigation of how to make sure that the love story was the propelling and driving force. The flagship [series] did not really allow for the time and the space for a two-hander. It was important to me that we make sure that the threads are coming together, that there’s a love story payoff at the core. That’s why episode four is important to me, because that’s where the love story payoff comes together, and all of their obstacles are clear.

The last two episodes of The Ones Who Live have yet to air, but is this the end of Rick and Michonne’s love story? Or is there room for a second season of this show?

You know I can’t answer that! But AMC handed us the reins. Ultimately, what you see is our vision.

The fourth episode is where Rick and Michonne put all their cards on the table. When did it become clear what the episode’s form should be? And when did you say, “I have to write this”?

What research did you do for the episode?

We had to understand Rick’s behavior; it cannot be a logical understanding. It has to be emotional; it has to be the thing that he’s not going to say until there’s a lot of walls broken down. I had to study a lot. I had to research a lot about PTSD because that’s what he’s going through. He has gone through a captivity, and a man like Rick — who’s a leader and was always in the frontlines of every battle — and now he can’t even get to his family for years, it’s a lot of trauma. Michonne was naive because she doesn’t understand why he’s not just being himself. She had to get to the point of understanding what it’s going to take to help him because she’s not using the right tools to help him initially. I was very keen on creating a love scene that was not a love scene we’ve seen a trillion times; it had to have something character-driven about it. So that moment for her is an anxiety attack/panic attack for Rick where his wound is exposed. In that level of vulnerability and intimacy, she finally sees him and understands that he has a wound that he can’t articulate.

You starred, wrote, showran and exec produced this episode, but you didn’t direct it. Is that something you’d like to do at some point?

Absolutely. I’m building toward that. There wasn’t even a chance in the world that I could direct this one.

Anything’s possible. We poured all we had to try to make this very fulfilling experience for people because people waited for it for a long time.

Does having this kind of creative control on Walking Dead translate to similar opportunities with the Disney+ Wakanda series ?

We’ll have to see how all that occurs. What I love about both these characters, is that they have a lot of story and dimension in them, and I adore them both. So we’ll have to see.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity. To hear much more from Gurira, listen to the full conversation from TV’s Top 5 , above.
