Since the 1950′s, an extraordinarily large percentage of the world’s seagoing commercial vessels were manned by Philippine crews – and for good reason. When properly trained and managed, Filipino seafarers are diligent and competent, honest and hard-working, have an adequate to excellent command of the English language, and are a delight to work with.

Filipino crew members were not, however, well represented in the international yachting community.

Mr. Alan Mill-Irving, previously a British Yacht Master himself sought to remedy this situation in 1992 by helping to form Crew Asia, Inc.

And the rest, as the old saying goes, is history.

Filipinos have an inherently happy nature with a positive attitude in adverse conditions. They are unusually adaptable, possess a strong regard for authority and are no strangers to hard work and its rewards. Crew Asia builds on these attributes in order to provide your vessel with first-quality crew members that you will be proud to have as a part of your seagoing team.

At present, Crew Asia represents close to 600+ able-bodied crew members. Crew Asia, Inc. is a SEC Registered Corporation which is licensed by the POEA (Philippine Overseas Employment Agency).

The Company maintains its head office in Cebu City where a numerous amount of seafarers are from. There is a branch office in Manila and a satellite office in Thailand.

As a POEA licensed company, Crew Asia, Inc. is – as of this date – the only manning company in the Philippines which exclusively supplies crew to the mega-yachting industry.

Qualifications for Job Applicants

The agency ensure that only Filipino workers are qualified and medically-fit are deployed. Hence, Filipino workers are medically examined by government-accredited medical clinics or hospitals and trade-tested or trained by training centers authorized by the government.

• Qualification of Seafarers  –  Only seafarers certified as competent and qualified shall work, be employed or be engaged onboard a ship.
• Minimum Age – No person below eighteen (18) years old shall work, be employed or be engaged onboard a ship.
• Medical Certification  – The seafarer shall hold a valid medical certificate issued by a medical facility duly accredited by the Department of Health (DOH) for that purpose, in accordance with its existing rules and regulations.

The hiring and employment of Filipino crew doesn’t need to be complex or costly.

Through our Guernsey and Philippines office, we are licensed by the ‘Philippine Overseas Employment Administration’ (POEA) to recruit, employ and administer seagoing staff onboard vessels worldwide.

In the initial discussions, we will guide you through the setting up of a ‘Crew Service Agreement’, which includes creating specific ranks, calculating pay scales and formulising leave rotations. Once complete and agreed we make an application on your behalf to the POEA to have your vessel registered with them along with your proposed manning schedule. When approved, offers of employment can be made to Filipino nationals accordingly. Our many years of experience working closely with our long-term partners United Philippine Lines (UPL) allows us to provide a 24 hour service that is second to none. Our dedicated Crew Management Team in the UK, US, New Zealand and the Philippines will then continue to look after all of your ongoing employment & administrative requirements including:

Placement & Recruitment

The recruitment process is conducted in a similar way for all candidates Our global Placement team use our extensive database and pre-screen candidates who fit within your requirements. Further screening including Marlins English testing as well as per-employment profile assessments and background checks can also be arranged.  Only those who pass this stage are submitted to the client for consideration.

Certification & Documentation

Once a candidate has been selected for employment, our team ensure that the individual holds all of the correct and valid certification (and relevant licences) for the role.

Documentation such as a Seamans Record Book and Seafarers Medical will be obtained and applied for. Employment and Payroll POEA regulated employment contracts are created, signed, and submitted accordingly to the relevant authorities and to the individual crew member.

Various types of visas can be applied for if necessary, to join the vessel. We will apply for this when a joining date and port is confirmed.

Deployment & Travel

Flights can be arranged in advance alongside the relevant visa application. We also liaise with the vessel and appointed port agents around the world. Vessel, managers and repatriated crew will have access to 24-hour emergency contact numbers should any problems arise. Our support does not stop here. When a Viking Crew Asia crew member is employed, we provide 24-hour support and assistance to the crew member and his/her employer.

Our full placement and recruitment facility is still available for vessels to use who already have a POEA agreement in place. Should you wish to recruit Filipino nationals on an “ad hoc” basis then this can easily be achieved under your current agreement. How Many Crew Members are needed on a Mega Yacht?

There is no short answer to this question as the number of crew depends on many variables. Some smaller vessels may manage with a crew of five, while larger vessels may require a crew of 120 plus. The number of crew depends on the size of the vessel, but also on the services you would like onboard and whether you would like specialist mega yacht crew roles filled onboard. Generally speaking, the crew are segregated into three main departments: the deck department, the engineering department and the interior department.

What Are the Main Mega Yacht Crew Roles?

Deck Department Roles

Captain: the authority onboard, responsible for navigation and passenger safety as well as crew management, budgeting, administration, voyage planning, ensuring regulations are abided by and for planning and arranging refit and maintenance projects. An experienced captain will offer the management skills needed for a harmonious crew as well as for masterfully navigating the waters. Meet Captain David Butler and Manolis Kilmataras

Staff Captain: as second in command beneath the Captain of vessels exceeding 70m+, the Staff Captain will head up the deck department and oversea maintenance, security, navigation and safety of the vessel. They will ensure that the Captain’s orders are carried out can assume command in an emergency.

Chief Officer: next in command, beneath the Captain or the Staff Captain depending on the size of the vessel, the chief officer assists with navigation, oversees docking, manages the deck crew, is watchkeeper and general assistant to the Captain. The Chief Officer can stand in for the Captain in their absence to keep the vessel safe and sailing smoothly. Meet former Chief Officer George Papafaklis

Second Officer: offering support to both the Captain and the Chief Officer, the Second Officer is often employed on larger vessels to offer further assistance alongside the Chief Officer.

Bosun: responsible for maintaining the exterior of the vessel by managing the deck crew and executing deck maintenance. Duties include ensuring windows are clean, washdowns and painting, caulking and basic repairs. They often captain tenders if required and will have good knowledge of any water toys on board and be on hand to assist guests with their use.

Deckhand: working under the management of the Bosun to maintain the exterior of the vessel through washdowns, polishing, line handling and repair projects. The deckhands should take pride in maintaining a welcoming vessel that is in tip-top condition.

AV/IT Officer: from the internet to satellite connectivity, the AV/IT Officer is responsible for maintaining a variety of media systems on board vital for navigation and guest entertainment. From day-to-day maintenance including regular back-ups to resolving issues to maintain fully operational systems, this mega yacht crew role is amongst one of the most specialist.

Electro Technical Officer (ETO): responsible for repairing and maintaining the electrical systems including High Voltage Systems. From the engine room to electronic navigation, these systems are vital for smooth sailing and require a highly trained professional to maintain safe standards.

Engine Department Roles

Chief Engineer: as head of the Engine Department, the Chief Engineer oversees the mechanical and electrical systems, maintains systems and supervises repairs, and manages the engineering crew members. This position is one of the most vital amongst the mega yacht crew roles as the individual will require an outstanding knowledge of the vessel’s workings, from the engines and generators through to electronics and hydraulics, to offer a smooth and safe voyage.

Engineer: reporting to the Chief Engineer, Engineers carry out daily maintenance to ensure all mechanical and electronic systems are performing as expected. They may troubleshoot when issues arise and, under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, make repairs.

Interior Department Roles

Hotel Manager: as manager of the interior department, the Hotel Manager is responsible for training and overseeing the other interior crew members and is often the first point of contact for guests during voyages. An experienced Hotel Manager can anticipate guests’ needs to provide an unbeatable experience.

Chief Steward/Stewardess: in the absence of a Hotel Manager on smaller vessels, a Chief Steward/Stewardess will manage the interior department.

Yacht Chef: responsible for planning, preparing and delivering meals on board that are suitable for any dietary preferences or requirements and are in line with budgets. An experienced chef with seasonal knowledge and familiarity with cooking different cuisines can heighten the experience for guests on board, making each meal and event for all of the senses.

Head of Service: ensures that the highest level of service is provided across the functions of the vessel throughout the journey, to inject luxury into every detail. They will have impeccable organisation skills and a keen eye for detail. They can provide input on meal direction and service, accompanying drinks, and execute arrangements for onboard events and parties.

Head of Housekeeping: responsible for maintaining the highest standard for the interior, setting cleaning schedules, ensuring provisions are stocked and available to the Stewards/Stewardesses and completing all cleaning duties to ensure the vessel is a welcoming environment for guests throughout the voyage.

Steward/Stewardess: vital amongst mega yacht crew roles, responsible for providing luxury service to guests whilst maintaining the yacht’s interior cleanliness. They will tidy and clean the vessel, including laundry services, while also providing daily services to guests including drink preparations, turn-down services, preparing cabins, meal service and fulfilling any further general care requirements required by guests.

Specialist Crew: specialist mega yacht crew roles from spa managers and therapists, personal trainers, hairdressers and medical professionals can be hired in accordance with the guests’ needs.

Creating the ultimate guest experience on board a yacht takes a variety of dedicated people with different skills and backgrounds. Depending on its size and operational structure, each yacht requires a unique skill set and a different number of crew members on board.

Generally speaking, smaller superyachts between 24-30m (80-100ft) in size will require a crew of between 2 and 8 members, whereas mid-sized yachts between 30-60m (100-200ft) will require between 8 and 20 crew members. Larger superyachts that are over 60m (200ft) in size will usually have a much bigger crew of over 20 people, whereas yachts over 100m (328ft) in size will have anywhere between 30 to 50 or more members on board to operate and maintain the vessel.

Each crew needs a different range of skills and every crew member will have their own titles and responsibilities on board. The range of exciting roles available on board larger superyachts include opportunities in:

The Deck Department: Includes Officers, Bosuns and Deckhands, the Deck Department is under the command of the Captain and is responsible for both the safe navigation and operation of the yacht.

The Engineering Department: Built up of a Chief Engineer and, depending on the size of the yacht, other Engineers, ETOs and AV/IT Officers. The Engineering Department is responsible for all mechanical and electrical operations on the yacht. From maintaining the propulsion systems to plumbing and HVAC systems, they are responsible for the safety, performance and efficiency of all the mechanics and electrics on board as well as ensuring compliance with any applicable regulations.

Interior Department: The interior department is focused on attention to detail and manages everything regarding the guest experience on board. This department includes Chefs, Stews, and Pursers, as well as specialist positions such as Spa Therapists, Nurses, Personal Trainers, etc.

Bespoke training is offered to the interior team, giving them the confidence to deliver world-class service on board. Crew members joining the deck and engineering departments will need to obtain certifications allowing them to safely man the vessel throughout the journey.

Microcity Sales Office by Mossine Partners, Moscow, Rusia

Mossine Partners have designed this futuristic bubbles structure as a temporary sales office. It is located in Moscow region, Russia.The initial design was created by Studio Mossine Partners and resembles the use of membrane as a structural elements. This temporary structure meets all requirements and apart from creating a very innovative facade system. The structure houses a showroom and office for the real estate company that’s developing the site. The internal program is organized into three zones: the largest central ‘bubble’ houses an exhibition area with 1:1 apartment models. Branching off this are two smaller ‘bubbles’ with a sales area for managers in one and a relax area, complete with café and playroom for children, in the other.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
