Azimut Yachts Logo

Founded in 1969

Azimut Yachts came about in 1969, when the young university student Paolo Vitelli founded Azimut Srl, and began chartering sailing boats.

In 1970 some prestigious yachting brands appointed the company to distribute their boats in Italy. Azimut quickly expanded its operations: Apart from distribution, it began to design new yachts. In a joint venture with Amerglass, it designed the AZ 43’ Bali, a mass-produced fiberglass boat, which was an immediate success. The company gradually expanded its range, focussing on the lower end of the market – with the launch of the AZ 32’ Targa in 1977, the “Ford T” of the boat world – and upper end too – (with the memorable début of the Azimut 105’ Failaka in 1982, the biggest mass-produced yacht in fiberglass at the time).

In 1985 Azimut acquired Benetti. This historical brand, based in Viareggio, had been building boats since 1873, and designed the concept of the megayacht. Azimut was now able construct its own yachts, defining new style and industry standards that would go on to revolutionize the boat building industry, such as: large frameless windows, electric seats, and walnut interiors.

From the late nineties onwards, with the acquisition of new boatyards at Fano, the restructuring of the Benetti boatyards at Viareggio and the construction of a new site at Avigliana, in the province of Turin, Azimut went on to become the foremost builder of yachts and megayachts. This leadership position was confirmed in subsequent seasons, thanks to numerous business successes and an investment policy which has consolidated Azimut’s technological and production capacities over the years, with sites now established in Brazil.

Father buries 6-year-old child at sea after a migrant boat went adrift for days, Cyprus police say

Cyprus police say a Syrian man admitted to burying one of his four children at sea after the 6-year-old died aboard a boat loaded with migrants that had gone adrift for many days without food or water.

Police spokesman Christos Andreou told the state-run Cyprus News Agency Monday that the Syrian man told them under questioning that the boat had departed from Syria on Feb. 20 but at some point ran out of fuel, sailing adrift in rough seas.

The man said he buried his child after wrapping him in a blanket two days before Cyprus marine police radar spotted the vessel on Feb. 29 some 67 miles (about 108 kilometers) south of the island nation. A patrol vessel transferred at least 31 migrants to the southern coastal town of Larnaca.

The Cypriot officers noticed a discrepancy in the number of children declared on the Syrian man’s documents and those left on board.

Petros Zenios, deputy operations chief with the Cyprus migration service, told state broadcaster CyBC that three other migrants tried to swim for help after noticing what appeared to be city lights on the horizon. He said there was no way that would’ve been Cyprus because of the boat’s distance from shore. The three remain missing despite an extensive search.

Zenios said two other migrants are being treated in a hospital, one in critical condition after apparently consuming seawater. The other is suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

There were 11 other minors aboard the boat, all in good health.

A Cyprus court ordered the 22-year-old boat captain to remain in police custody for eight days. He faces charges including manslaughter and causing death through negligence.

Zenios said 1,158 minors arrived in Cyprus aboard migrant-laden boats all of last year. Some 316 minors reached the island by sea so far this year.

Meanwhile, Cypriot Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou told other European Union counterparts in Brussels Monday that the 27-member bloc should re-examine parts of Syria to facilitate repatriations of migrants.

Officials from Greece, Sweden and Austria agreed that the EU needs to re-evaluate the issue, according to a statement issued Monday.

Darién Gap Migration Is Halted After Colombia Arrests Boat Captains

Boat operators suspended migrant crossings after Colombia arrested two captains. The Biden administration has asked Colombia to do more to stem the flow of people bound for the U.S. border.

By Julie Turkewitz

Migration toward the United States through the dangerous jungle passage known as the Darién Gap has been halted, at least temporarily, following the arrest of two boat captains working for companies that play an essential role in ferrying migrants to the jungle.

Boat companies suspended migrant crossings from two northern Colombia towns, Necoclí and Turbo, to the entrance of the Darién forest, according to the mayor of Necoclí, leaving roughly 3,000 migrants stranded in those communities.

The Colombian law enforcement action in the region is sure to be watched closely by U.S. officials: The Biden administration has been pressuring Colombia for months to try harder to stop people from using the Darién as a path to the United States.

The boat route is the main way into the Darién Gap, a strip of land linking South and North America that was once rarely traversed but has emerged in recent years as one of the hemisphere’s most important and busiest migration routes.

Nearly a million people have crossed the Darién since 2021, according to the authorities at the end of the route in Panama, helping to fuel an immigration crisis in the United States.

The Colombian Navy last week seized two boats belonging to the two companies, Katamaranes and Caribe, carrying a total of 151 migrants from Necoclí toward the jungle, according to the Colombian prosecutor’s office.

Officials determined that the migrants were being transported illegally, arrested the two boat captains and took control of both boats.

The arrests mark an important shift in strategy by Colombian authorities, who for months have allowed boat operators to openly transport migrants from Necoclí across the Gulf of Urabá to the towns of Acandí and Capurganá, where people enter the jungle.

Detail area

In an interview on Wednesday, the mayor of Necoclí, Guillermo Cardona, said the boat companies, which operate large fleets and have several captains, had halted operations in recent days “as a form of protest” against the arrests.

Boat operators have become key players in a multimillion-dollar migration business that has been allowed to flourish in northern Colombia.

In September, The New York Times reported that this business was being run by local politicians and economic leaders, including the manager of Katamaranes, who at the time was a mayoral candidate in Necoclí. (The manager did not win, and was not among those arrested.)

U.S. officials have been privately asking Colombian officials since at least October to investigate the boat operators.

In a recent interview, a top Colombian prosecutor, Hugo Tovar, said his office was working “hand in hand” with the United States on the issue of human trafficking through Colombia and the Darién. Two U.S. agencies, Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, were providing training and sharing information to aid with investigations, he added.

Necoclí is a beach town with limited resources and infrastructure, and in recent years it has been overwhelmed by the migrants .

It’s unclear how long the boat companies will halt operations. In recent months migrants have arrived at a rate of hundreds a day, and if the protest continues, the number of people stranded in tents on the town’s beaches is likely to swell quickly, straining water and sanitation services past their breaking points.

This could put pressure on the Colombian government to ease up on any future arrests of boat operators, since the government has limited capacity to provide aid to large numbers of people who could become stuck at its northern border.

Still, Mr. Tovar said, his office remained committed to investigating human trafficking, calling it “an issue that concerns the entire hemisphere.”

Mr. Cardona, the mayor, said he was calling on the national government for assistance with the hundreds of migrants who now have nowhere to go. “This is an SOS,” he said.

Immigration through the Darién has emerged as an enormous challenge for the Biden administration, particularly ahead of the 2024 presidential race.

President Biden and his all-but-certain Republican rival, Donald J. Trump, are both scheduled to make appearances on Thursday in different parts of Texas near the southern border.

In 2021, just over 130,000 people made their way through the Darién jungle on the way to the United States. In 2022, nearly 250,000 did. Last year, more than 500,000 people crossed the Darién, helping drive a record number of arrivals at the U.S. border.

Mr. Biden has tried to deter this flow by expanding legal paths to migration, and by stepping up deportation efforts at the border.

But these measures have had only limited effect .

As of Feb. 28, the Panama authorities said that more than 72,000 people had trekked through the Darién this year — a 35 percent increase over the number of people who crossed in the first two months of last year.

The largest number of migrants came from Venezuela, where activists’ hopes that the authoritarian government would allow a democratic election this year have withered in recent months. The second most came from Ecuador, where a dire security situation has worsened this year. The next three major countries of origin are Haiti, Colombia and China.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht and boats srl

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht and boats srl

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht and boats srl

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht and boats srl

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

yacht and boats srl

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

yacht and boats srl

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

yacht and boats srl

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Death Valley's 'Lake Manly' is shrinking, will no longer see any boats, Park Service says

yacht and boats srl

The opportunity to cruise by way of boat on the lake that formed at Death Valley National Park has dried up, literally.

The National Park Service said Monday that “Lake Manly,” the temporary lake that formed in Badwater Basin in late February is “closed to boating.”

Tourists from all over the world flocked to the area over the last week, basking in the opportunity to kayak, stroll, or frolic in one of the normally driest places in the world.

The occurrence, called an “extremely rare event ” by The Park Service, was brought on by record torrential rains and flooding, according to previous USA TODAY reporting.

"Lake Manly", which formed a few weeks after Hurricane Hillary, was thought to last at least a couple more weeks.

Here’s what we know.

Why can’t you boat at the Death Valley Lake anymore?

"Lake Manly" has now become “too shallow and too far from the road” to transport and launch watercraft without damaging the landscape, according to the NPS.

Visitors are no longer able to bring a boat or any other vessel that travels on water.

They will, however, still have the chance to observe the stunning reflections of the surrounding peaks in its calm waters for the moment, USA TODAY reported.

“Then it’ll be a muddy, wet mess, and then it’ll dry out into those gorgeous white salt flats," NPS Park Ranger Nichole Andler told the Associated Press.

How did the lake in Death Valley form?

A number of storms brought “record amounts of rain” to Death Valley National Park over the last six months, causing "Lake Manly" to form at Badwater Basin.

The basin runs along part of central California’s border with Nevada, USA TODAY reported.

"Lake Manly" was but a “shallow reflecting pool” when it appeared in August, forming after the remnants of Hurricane Hilary, according to NPS.

Water filled the lake in early February from another Californian storm, known as an atmospheric river , USA TODAY reported. The additional water raised levels back to a foot deep in some places, NPS said.

“Then intense winds from February 29 through March 2 blew the lake to the north, spreading it out, resulting in shallower water,” according to NPS.

What made "Lake Manly’s" formation “especially rare” was that all the water collected in the basin “typically evaporates faster than it flows,” Andler previously told AP.

“To have as much water as we have now – and for it to be as deep and lasting as long as it has – this is extremely uncommon. If it’s not once-in-a-lifetime, it’s nearly,” Andler said.

Here’s what to know about a US couple missing in the Caribbean

Police in Grenada said the U.S. elderly couple Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, whose catamaran was hijacked a week earlier, were likely dead. (AP Video: Kenton X. Chance)

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in the eastern Caribbean are scouring waters in the region in hopes of finding a missing U.S. couple who were aboard their catamaran Simplicity more than a week ago when police say it was hijacked by three escaped prisoners from Grenada.

Police have said that Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel are presumed dead . The search for them began on Feb. 21 after someone discovered their catamaran abandoned on the shores of St. Vincent and alerted authorities.

Police say the three prisoners escaped from a police station on Feb. 18 and hijacked the catamaran a day later. Authorities said the prisoners then illegally entered the southwest coast of St. Vincent on Feb. 19 and docked the boat. Two days later, the three men were arrested along the island’s northwest coast.

Police transport escaped prisoners Atiba Stanislaus, far left, and Trevon Robertson who are handcuffed together in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Monday, March 4, 2024. The men had escaped from a police holding cell in Grenada on Feb. 18 and are suspected of hijacking a catamaran while Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, who disappeared, were aboard. (AP Photo/Kenton Chance)

Here’s what to know about the case:

WHY WAS THE COUPLE TARGETED?

It’s unclear why the escaped prisoners hijacked the couple’s catamaran, but it was moored at Grand Anse beach, near to the police station where the three men escaped.

Police believe the men hijacked the catamaran with the couple aboard and then allegedly threw them into the water while traveling to St. Vincent, which is located north of Grenada.

They have noted that there were signs of violence aboard the catamaran.

WHO ARE THE ESCAPED PRISONERS?

Police in Grenada have identified the escaped prisoners as Trevon Robertson, a 19-year-old unemployed man; Abita Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor.

All were charged a couple of months ago with one count of robbery with violence. Mitchell also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm.

Vannie Curwen, Grenada’s assistant police commissioner, has said the men had been placed in a holding cell rather than in jail, because a judge hadn’t yet ruled whether they would be released on bail.

WHO IS THE COUPLE?

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association has described Brandel and Hendry as veteran cruisers and longtime members who were “warm-hearted and capable.” It noted that Brandel served on the association’s board for two years.

The association said the couple had sailed their boat in the 2023 Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua and planned to spend the winter cruising the eastern Caribbean. A GoFundMe donation page stated that Brandel had become a first-time grandmother.

Nick Buro, Brandel’s son, and Bryan Hendry, Hendry’s son, said in a statement Tuesday that they were “incredibly saddened” to hear that the couple was presumed dead, but added that they remain optimistic about the ongoing search.

“While the end of their life may have been dark, they brought light, and that light will never be extinguished from the hearts and minds of the people who knew, loved and cared so deeply about them,” they said.

WHY HAVEN’T THE PRISONERS BEEN CHARGED IN THE CASE?

Police in Grenada and St. Vincent have provided limited information about the case of the missing couple, noting that the investigation is ongoing, though they have said the couple is presumed dead.

Authorities haven’t yet shared any specific evidence linking the three men to the couple’s disappearance. St. Vincent police say the men have been cooperating in the investigation.

The men pleaded guilty this week to immigration-related charges, and are scheduled to be sentenced on those counts in early March.

WHO HAS JURISDICTION OF THE CASE?

Authorities haven’t said whether prosecutors in St. Vincent or Grenada would pursue the case involving the couple.

Grenada Police Commissioner Don McKenzie said the attorney generals and prosecutors on both islands “are in discussions.”

Meanwhile, Grenada police sent a team of five officials to help with the investigation in nearby St. Vincent.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Police in Grenada have launched an investigation into how the men were able to escape from their holding cell.

McKenzie has said the police station should have been secure enough to prevent such an escape, and that authorities are looking into whether it was a “system failure” or a “slip up.”

McKenzie has said no officers have resigned or been disciplined, although one supervisor at the station has been transferred to another location “to ensure a thorough investigation in this matter.”
