Damen Yachting is proud to announce the launch of their latest Yacht Support YS5302. The launch of this 53-metre Yacht Support, the second from the YS53 design series, took place in Antalya, Turkey, in the presence of her delighted Owner who used this build milestone to officially unveil this Yacht Support’s name, FIVE OCEANS.All those present at the Damen Yachting build facility in Antalya were treated to a much anticipated first look at this Yacht Support’s unique colour scheme out in the open for the first time. Her striking sky-blue hull visually aligns with the ambitious and bold programme this support yacht will undertake, honouring the connection to the oceans she will serve and inspired by the Owner’s passion for motor racing.

Rob Dolling, Founder & CEO at VERPEKA DOLLING Superyachts, the Monaco-based yacht sales and charter company, proudly assisted the Owner with the sale, project managed the build on the Owner’s side and will manage the vessel’s onward operation, commented, “This new, next generation Yacht Support platform is very well thought out and engineered, presenting the perfect platform for the ambitious global plans the Owner has for FIVE OCEANS. All our requests and changes, some admittedly quite elaborate, were always well received and seamlessly integrated with precision into the impressive end result.”

Much of the details linked to the build of YS5302 have been surrounded by secrecy with little information being made available. Recently Owner Tommy Allen shared a little insight into the plans he has with YS53 FIVE OCEANS as part of the Damen Yachting YS Insider series. Tommy Allen is the Founder and Director of Five Oceans Global Solutions. His dedication to cutting-edge technology and marine exploration, while actively working towards preserving the marine environment, will form part of the programme Allen has in store for YS53 FIVE OCEANS. “You can sleep on it, fly off of it and move it. For us the Yacht Support is a platform that enables us to do all the incredible things we wanted to do,” Tommy Allen, Owner YS53 FIVE OCEANS.

YS53 FIVE OCEANS incorporates two decades of successful Yacht Support experience, showcasing a deep understanding of high-end yacht operations, global adventure lifestyles, and outstanding technical solutions. The vessel has a top speed of 20 knots and an operating range of 5,000 nautical miles and a draft of 3.20m. A good draft to have access in smaller marinas and shallow waters. At the aft are additional storages for dive equipment and water sports.

DAMEN signs largest Yacht Support to date

Are large support vessels preferable to the very largest superyachts.

Dutch yacht builder, DAMEN , has signed a new order for a 75m bespoke support yacht, which will be the largest to date when delivered in 2022. The news has been announced just a couple of months after the launch of 46m, YS 4508 model, ‘ Joy Rider ’.

The new 75m signing’s customised inhouse design is based on DAMEN’s newly developed YS 7512 model in the DAMEN Yacht Support range. Wright Maritime Group have provided consultation on the custom design and technical development, and will also supervise the project on behalf of the client.

According to The Superyacht Agency , the average volume of 70-80m yachts is 1,720gt, while DAMEN’s new 75m yacht support will have a volume of approximately 1,900gt, and will hangar a helicopter with a D14 value, state-of-the-art environmental equipment and capacity for containerised emergency relief support equipment, alongside a range of specialised marine gear and tenders. The vessel will reportedly be able to accommodate up to 45 people including crew, special staff and guests.

“She will be the largest [yacht support vessel] to date,” said Rob Luijendijk, director sales at AMELS and DAMEN, “which I think continues to show the scalability of the support solution for large superyachts”. Research by The Superyacht Agency shows a spike in the recent average LOA of the DAMEN fleet and order book, suggesting that these vessels will continue to grow in size, in response to the support required by the mothership.

In our most recent edition of The Superyacht Tenders Report, we consider ‘the rise of the support vessel’ ( available here ) and the growing dependence on them in order to host the increasing number of tenders and toys that the new generation of owners are in favour of.

However, the increasing size of the support vessel, including DAMEN’s new signing, also concurs with the idea that it is more cost effective for owners who require more storage space to purchase a support vessel than a larger motoryacht or superyacht. For example, according to DAMEN, the average 55m superyacht costs around €38.5 million and has a volume of around 707gt with 25sqm of tender and toy storage. By comparison, a 74m vessel will cost around €90.5 million, have a 1,790gt volume and 130sqm of storage space. This amounts to a 235 per cent increase in price, a 1,083gt greater volume and a 400 per cent increase in storage space. However, if one chose to purchase a 55m support vessel rather than a 74m mothership, the initial expenditure would be €13.5, the total volume of the two vessels would be 1,172gt and total storage space would be 250sqm. This represents a capital saving of around €37 million, a 900 per cent increase in storage capacity and a 465gt volume increase.

75 meter Damen support vessel WINGMAN undertakes sea trials

Launched in October, the 75m (246ft) custom support vessel WINGMAN is currently undertaking sea trials in the Netherlands, close to the Vlissingen facilities where she was built. 

Officially known as Hull YS 7512, the yacht boasts Damen’s signature profile and showcases a grey hull with a striking orange boot stripe. Her custom design draws largely on the YS 75 model which represents Damen ’s largest support range offering a wealth of features.

The 1,900 GT yacht boasts a wide 12.6-meter beam and will provide exceptional storage for specialist marine gear and tenders, together with a range of toys, including a submarine and scuba dive facilities. She also comes equipped with a custom crane for lifting the toys and tenders and a hangar for a helicopter with a D14 value. Yacht WINGMAN will have a cruising range of 5,000 nm and an impressive top speed of 18 knots.

She will also provide accommodation for up to 45, including crew and other specialist staff, as well as an additional 4 guests across two luxury suites.

Since 2009 Damen has delivered 20 support yachts between 45 and 75 meters to clients around the world, including the 72-meter yacht  GAME CHANGER and 46-meter yacht  BAD COMPANY , which are both currently available for charter. Rob Luijendijk, Director of Sales at Damen Yachting, ventures that “yacht support vessels are revolutionizing luxury yachting”

She will be the largest yacht support vessel built to date upon delivery, which is expected in early 2023. Following the successful completion of sea trials, it is reported that she will be handed over to her US owner, the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos  to cruise alongside his  sailing yacht KORU .

It is not expected that support vessel WINGMAN will be available for charter once delivered.

Rose Damen, managing director of Damen Yachting, calls the 262-footer a “crossover superyacht” that throws out the idea that an explorer yacht has to look like a modified research vessel. The exterior of the new 80M, depending on the designer, can range from a slightly rounded superstructure to extreme curves.

The three exterior choices come from Azure Yacht Design (pictured), Harrison Eidsgaard, and Espen Oino, while the interiors are by Harrison Eidsgaard (pictured), Winch Design, and Reymond Langton. The designers all worked independently with Damen to create designs that would fit into a core platform.

The Dutch builder then pre-engineered the different interiors and exteriors so they can be interchangeable, depending on how the client wants to design it—another trait that is new to the rigid explorer design. The stern area can also be configured in multiple ways, from an enclosed helicopter hangar (with a helipad on top), to double tender garages, to a gym and wellness center, or even a dive center.

Ben Harrison, cofounder of U.K. designer Harrison Eidsgaard, presented his firm’s interior concept, a sprawling New York-loft-style design that makes use of the tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, open-plan spaces, loose designer furniture, and even a fireplace. “We can play with the spaces and reallocate them according to the owner’s wishes, without having major implications for the technical design of the yacht,” said Harrison.

The new 80 also has some shared un-explorer-like features, including an enclosed observation lounge and open nook on the bow, as well as a crow’s nest that stands nearly 100 feet above the vessel. “It’s an intimate space that allows for 360-degree views of the water,” said Tintore.

Despite the unusual exterior and interior offerings, says Tintore, the 262-footer retains the Xplorer line’s DNA. The vessel is designed to stay off-grid for 40 days at sea. Tintore noted that the original concept of these vessels being solely polar explorers has also been thrown out the window. Since the first was launched in 2015, Damen owners have visited tropical destinations with their expedition yachts.

The flexible layouts, adds Tintore, allows owners to configure their boats to match the conditions where they’ll be cruising. The new design should prompt competitors to reexamine their own explorer concepts and hopefully inject more flexibility—and fun—into their creations.
