Superyachts are the most elite asset a person can own, your own private yacht to cruise the world’s most beautiful destinations. Some yachts cross the Atlantic Ocean twice a year between the Mediterranean and Caribbean while others embark on world cruises.

Fuel is one of many annual running costs of a yacht and not only does the yacht need fuel for cruising; the generators require fuel to keep the vessel running while at anchor and underway, as well as many of the water sports toys requiring fuel.

So how much do they really consume?

According to the Yachting Pages, the longest Superyacht in the world, 180m M/Y Azzam, holds 1,000,000 litres of fuel. To put it into perspective, that is the equivalent of filling a regular hatchback car 23,800 times or six Boeing 747 commercial airliners.

West Nautical’s Vessel Manager, Tony Hildrew, a former Yacht Chief Engineer said: “Fuel is the single biggest expense when it comes to yacht operations, it is estimated that the global spend on fuel is around $150bn annually however this shouldn’t put you off, there are a number of ways to ensure your fuel consumption doesn’t get out of hand. Implementing a Ships Energy Efficiency Management Plan or SEEMP for short is a great way to keep fuel costs down without compromising on your cruising experience.”

Each yacht will consume fuel differently for a number of reasons – the size and make of the engines, how often the yacht is using generators and the number of tenders and water sports toys on board that require fuel. For example, if the yacht is out at anchor and running on generators 90% of the time, the fuel consumption will be much higher than a yacht that is in a marina at night and connected to shore power and water.

Another factor that will affect fuel consumption is the yacht’s itinerary as the sea conditions will impact how much fuel the engines consume.

Fuel consumption is often measured in litres per hour, the best way to calculate the total fuel consumption for your itinerary is by using a fuel calculator like the one found here on the West Nautical website.

You will be able to input the start and ending points of your cruise on the map, this will automatically update the distance table. The next step is to enter the speed, fuel consumption and cost of fuel per litre to determine the cost of the trip.

Here is an example: A fast 30m yacht cruising at 20 knots will consume roughly 400 – 500 litres depending on the engine type, this would equate to the total consumption of 2500 litres for a distance of 100 nautical miles.

Another example is, a 70m yacht looking to travel 100 nautical miles with the engines burning 1000 litres per hour would add up to a total consumption of 8335L for that passage. Depending on where the yacht bunkered, the estimated cost with the price per litre being on the low end at €0.90 per litre would cost a total of €7501.50. An example of a 100 nautical mile passage would take you from Saint Tropez to The North Coast of Corsica.

Fuel prices fluctuate depending on which country you bunker in and some places you bunker offer tax free fuel such a Gibraltar and Montenegro. Fuel prices can vary but typically costs between €0.80 and €1.30 per litre.

Boat fuel consumption can be a rather significant expense , and it’s one that goes up as gas prices rise. While it’s true that you have to pay to play, there are some measures boaters can take to cut down on this expense as the price of gas goes up.

Here are five tips to help save money on marine fuel for your boat:

• Lighten your load by removing excess gear and weight.
• When operating, bring the boat on plane, then leave the throttle alone.
• Understand how to properly trim your boat—if the bow seems high, trim it down.
• Ensure your boat’s propeller is the right size, material, and model to maximize performance.
• Keep the bottom of your boat’s hull clean and smooth.

1. Lighten the Load

Many boats get loaded down over time without anyone even noticing, and the heavier your boat is, the less efficient it will be. While some gear is absolutely necessary, some other stuff may not be — and when added up it can weigh a ton.

• Think about removing that extra anchor rode, the big box of fishing weights, dishware that never gets used, and similar items from the boat.
• Also consider the water and waste tanks, if your boat has them. Can you get by with a half-full water tank? If so, you’ll shed eight pounds per gallon. W
• When is the last time you pumped out the waste tank? Again, you can remove a lot of weight from the boat by lowering its level.

2. Bring the Boat on Plane, then Leave the Throttle Alone

As is true with cars, boats tend to burn less gas at slower speeds. Boats are different, however, in that most get the worst fuel economy just below planning speed and the best economy just above it.

There are certainly some exceptions (such as some trawlers and some boats propped to go very fast) but as a general rule, the average outboard powerboat will break onto plane right around 3000 to 3500 RPM. And in most cases, this is where they get the best cruising fuel economy.

Note that on newer board your MPG may be displayed on a gauge at the helm . In this case, simply eyeball that gauge and you can see just when the boat’s getting its peak mileage.

3. Tweak the Trim

Most boats run best on an even keel at a slight inclination of just two to four degrees. But depending on the boat’s design and the weight distribution of gear and passengers, you may need to adjust engine or drive trim and/or trim tabs to get it running this way.

If the bow seems to dig in try trimming the bow up a bit, and if you have to crane your neck to see over the bow, trim the bow down some.

4. Make Sure You Have the Right Propeller

Few boaters ever change propellers to see if they can gain a performance edge, but doing so can add several MPH to your cruising speed, which equates to more miles traveled for less gas burned .

Finding the ideal prop for your boat may take some experimentation; remember that your goal is to turn wide-open RPM in the middle of the manufacturer’s recommended range, and adding an inch of pitch will decrease rpm by about 200, while dropping by an inch will increase RPM by about the same amount.

Also note that switching from an aluminum propeller to a stainless-steel model can gain you one to three MPH, as well.

5. Keep the Bottom of Your Boat Clean

Few things sap speed and increase fuel consumption like a dirty bottom. While antifouling paint will keep most of it at bay, its effectiveness can drop with age. Plus, even a freshly-painted boat can develop a layer of scum or slime, and many boats have unpainted underwater surfaces like transducers that growth can adhere to.

• So, if your boat lives in a wet slip it’s a good idea to pull up to a sandbar or beach once in a while and gently scrub the bottom.
• If there are any areas where more substantial growth has attached, scrape them clean with a rigid object that won’t damage the surfaces, like a plastic putty knife.

Employ all of these tips, and your boat may burn one, five, or even 10 gallons less fuel on your very next trip. Every boat will be different, of course, but no matter how large or small it may be, at today’s gas prices those saved gallons can add up to some serious cash in the bank.

Filling up the tank of your boat is quite pricey, which is why a growing number of boat owners want to know exactly how much they are looking to spend for their upcoming voyage. This is also important for people who want to charter a boat for their holiday.

The easiest way to calculate your fuel costs is by using a yacht fuel cost calculator. There is a great calculator available here in case you want to save time and get an approximate estimation.

As you can see, the yacht fuel cost calculator has many variables which you need to be aware of before you set out to calculate the approximate price. This is what we will be dealing with in the next few chapters.

To help you get a better understanding of the calculation process we will do things manually while giving you the exact formulas used to calculate your vessel’s fuel needs. Therefore, make sure you keep on reading.

There are several things you need to keep in mind when you first set out to estimate the total fuel cost for your next voyage. These are summarised in the following points:

• Distance of journey - The total amount of nautical miles (or km)
• Cruising speed - The (average) speed of your vessel (in knots or km/hr)
• Fuel consumption - Understanding how many gallons (or liters) of fuel are consumed per hour
• Yacht fuel price - Understanding the average market price per gallon of fuel

The first two points depend solely on your needs and personal preference, which means that they are more flexible on a subjective basis. The latter two points may require a bit of research, especially if you’re not familiar with the engine of the vessel.

In the following sections, we will delve deeper into each of the points mentioned above, and offer the required formulas to help you calculate yacht fuel cost.

Calculating distance and speed

To understand the exact distance you are looking to cover in your next voyage, you can simply use Google Maps to plan your route. The following video explains the process in detail.

As soon as your route is planned out, you can measure the distance as well, selecting the preferred method of calculation. In our case, it is best to measure in nautical miles (1nm=1,85km), as this metric is more commonly used among sea men. Next comes the cruising speed. The number is mostly calculated in knots (nautical miles/hr). The speed with which the vessel will cruise depends on the captain onboard, but is often influenced by the owner and guests onboard. You can make a rough estimation of this number based on previous trips.

Next, we need to calculate the amount of fuel that you will likely need. To do this we need to understand the engine type, its horsepower, and several other factors.

Let’s take a marine diesel engine for example. These engines are very common on motor yachts and consume approximately 0.4 pounds of fuel per hour for each unit of horsepower. You can find fuel consumption info for your specific engine by looking it up on the web or by calling the service number.

Once you know the fuel burn rate, it’s best to add a relative error margin of 10% based on minor factors. These include weather conditions, vessel size, and drag, all of which can increase the fuel burn.

How much fuel does a yacht use per hour?

Now that you know all the variables you can go ahead and calculate the amount of fuel that your yacht will need.

• Start by calculating the fuel burn per hour based on the horsepower of the engine.
• Add a multiplier based on the cruising speed of your vessel.

A vessel with a diesel engine of 300 horsepower will most likely burn 16-17 gallons per hour, which you can then use as a guideline when calculating the travel time based on the nautical miles you are looking to cover.

Superyachts are consuming much more fuel. An average 70-meter luxury yacht will burn around 130 gallons per hour with the engines running, while the amount increases significantly when the ship is moving. On average, you are looking at ±€2000 per hour (±1000 gallons) to achieve a speed of 20 knots. Of course, the higher the cruising speed, the more fuel you will be burning per hour, which in turn makes each hour at sea more expensive.

How much does boat fuel cost per gallon?

The exact price you are looking to pay per gallon depends on the marina you find yourself in. By looking at several price points of marinas, we get the following:

• Average diesel prices range from $3.2-$3.9 per gallon
• Average petrol prices range from $7.2-$7.8 per gallon

Note that discounts usually apply whenever you choose to purchase large quantities of fuel.

Why is boat fuel so expensive?

Marine fuel pricing is heavily inflated due to low supply and high demand. In short, the limited number of fuel stations at marinas have to service all the yachts that dock, which leads to a no-choice monopoly.

That said, yacht owners are usually not that concerned about the small price spike that marinas charge as an extra. If anything, they are happy to pay due to the convenience of the service.

How much fuel does a yacht hold?

Once again, the answer to this question depends on the size of the vessel. Smaller yachts can hold around 1300 gallons of fuel, while the bigger vessels can store up to 100,000 gallons. The ship’s engineers should be able to provide this number for the vessel you command.

Now that we have a better understanding of all the variables that determine the cost of fuel, we can go ahead and take you through the calculation process step by step.

First, know the total duration of your cruise. To obtain this information, divide the number of nautical miles by the cruising speed of your vessel (knots). For example, if you want to make a journey that totals 150 nautical miles while traveling at 20 knots, the yacht fuel formula looks as follows:

Total duration = 150 nm / 20kn

Total duration = 7,5 hrs

Note that the amount of fuel consumption may end up higher than expected if:

• Sea and weather conditions are not favourable
• You plan to make short stops along the way while the engine keeps running

Next, what you want to do multiply the number of hours by the number of gallons that your engine burns on an hourly basis while moving at the speed you previously indicated. If we take, as an example, the superyacht mentioned in the previous examples, we would make the calculation as follows:

7,5 hrs x 1000 gph = 7500 gallons

Now assume that you will also make two stops along the way, an hour and a half each, in order to let the guests enjoy their time; maybe ride a jet ski.

You then multiply the added number of hours with the consumption rate of a running engine. In this case:

3 hrs x 130 gph = 390 gallons

All that is left to do now is add up the total amount of fuel needed and multiply the number with the price per gallon.

(7500+390) x $3,5 = $27615

In this example, the final cost of your will set you back a little bit more than 27 thousand dollars. Just to be safe, calculate the additional 10% (margin of error) to be prepared against unexpected mistakes. This added amount is not necessarily an ad-on when you consider chartering. Private yacht owners, however, should add the amount to their final cost.

And that's it! You should now have a better idea on the steps you need to follow to calculate the fuel costs for your yacht. While there is quite a bit of information you should keep in mind, it is best to plan out everything with detail to avoid unforeseen costs. Yacht Charter: How Much Does it Cost? All Rental Costs Explained

How much it costs to rent a yacht isn’t always a very clear cut answer. There are numerous ways to charter a yacht and different factors can significantly increase or lower the cost of a yacht rental.

Here are the main costs to consider to estimate the total yacht rental price of your next yacht charter.

Yacht Rental Costs in a Nutshell

To calculate the price of a yacht charter, you need to sum the base fee of the yacht charter (the price you see displayed on websites), taxes (varies depending on destination), APA , crew gratuity and insurance cost . 

Depending on the details of your yacht charter, you will need to add between 30% and 100% on top of the base fee to have the total cost of your rental.

Here is an idea of the ranges you can expect for the yacht charter base fees :

• Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts under 50ft: €4 000 – €15 000 / week
• Motor Yacht – Sailing Yachts between 50ft and 65ft: €15 000 – €40 000 / week
• Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts between 65ft and 80ft: €40 000 – €70 000 / week
• Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts between 80ft and 100ft: €70 000 – €100 000 / week
• Motor Yachts – Sailing Yachts over 100ft: €100 000 – up to 1,000,000 / week

How is the total price of a yacht rental calculated?

There are two main categories of yacht charters: all-inclusive or separated charges. 

The all-inclusive yacht rentals option (rare)

The all-inclusive option isn’t very common in yacht charters, and tends to be for smaller yachts and cruise where it’s easier to package a standardized offer.

As the name implies, all-inclusive yacht charter offers a price that includes everything: fuel, food, beverages, and entertainment (diving and fishing equipment).

The “usual” option: base charter rates and separated variable charges to add on top

In most yachting websites, the price of a yacht charter only refers to the  base price  of a boat at its lowest possible charter time.

It doesn’t include many variable costs such as food and beverage, fuel, taxes, insurance and so on.

To understand the total cost of chartering a yacht when it’s not all-inclusive (which is almost always the case), it’s therefore important to split the costs that are included in the base rate of the yacht (the price you’ll see displayed on a website) from the costs that are not included in that base rate , that you will therefore need to add yourself if you want a precise estimation.

Don’t worry, the math isn’t rocket science.

The formula goes like this:

Total yacht charter price = Base charter fee + APA + Taxes + Insurance

We’ll detail each costs in the following paragraphs.

The base charter fee of a yacht rental: Costs and factors included in the calculation

The base charter fee of the yacht rental is essential in calculating the total cost of your charter. Most variable costs are calculated as a percentage of that base fee and are simply summed up together along with the base fee to get the total cost.

Here is what you should know about the base charter fee.

The base charter fee follows a simple rule: the longer the yacht, the higher the charter cost

The boat’s size affects the base charter fee considerably. It determines the number of cabins and guest capacity , the number of staff on board, along with a lot of amenities that tend to get more spacious and more luxurious the longer the yacht gets. 

Everything that comes with the yacht (including the staff!) is included in the base charter fee.

The more reputable and in-demand the yacht is, the higher the base fee gets

A yacht reputation and popularity can also affect the base fee, even for boats within the same size range.

Boats are by definition limited in stock and follow supply and demand laws . When a particular yacht is in high demand, whether it’s thanks to its reputation, its features, the season or its recent appearance in a movie, series or TV shows the price of the charter can shoot up.

For instance, chartering a yacht featured in a James Bond movie such as  luxury yacht Regina  won’t cost the same as a regular model. Likewise for most yachts that are a part of the popular Below Deck TV show .

It can also be true for some classic yachts that had famous builders or previous celebrity owners.

The season does influence the yacht rental prices at the base fee level

Your yacht charter base fee depends to some extent on your date of departure. 

If you take your vacation during the busiest weeks of the year (high season) of a destination, you’ll pay a higher base price than someone who charters a yacht on low season dates.

In the Mediterranean, the high season is in summer while it’s in winter for the Caribbean. The yacht charter base fees will be at their highest during these months. 

Sometimes just a week or two can make a big difference to the price. Chartering a yacht in shoulder seasons can be a good idea when you are looking for good deals.

Likewise, since some destinations have very short seasons , it has increased demands and makes it more expensive.

International events will also increase the cost of a yacht charter. Expect to pay more if you want to attend the Monte-Carlo Masters (April), the Cannes Film Festival (May), or the Monaco Grand Prix (May) during your yachting vacations in the Mediterranean.

The destination you pick can affect the base charter fee of your yacht rental

Your vacation destination is an essential factor in the yacht charter charge that is included in the base fee. 

As the supply and demand law dictates, the more competition there is, the less you have to spend. It is why locations with large charter fleets are less expensive.

The Bahamas, BVI and the Mediterranean are for example more affordable than remote islands without established yachting industries.

The water toys are usually included in your base yacht charter fee and influence its amount

On a yacht, water toys don’t refer to your average backyard inflatable unicorns. Think instead of big equipment for marine activities: jet skis, kite-surf, kayaks, paddleboards, submarines, and expensive high-powered yacht tenders.

Some vessels come with sea pools or a giant slide to glide from the top of the boat straight into the ocean.

Most of these items, especially when they are in high numbers, can come at a cost that will be on the bottom line of your yacht charter invoice.

All the water toys specified in the yacht brochure when you make the reservation are generally included in the base fee . But it’s up to you if you want to rent others or even buy them. Make sure you ask your broker for advice about the cost of these extra if your budget is limited.

The base fee of your yacht charter is fixed and proportional to its duration

Most yacht charter companies only work ‘per week,’ and yacht owners rarely accept a shorter duration. Many companies have minimum stays of ten days, however some boats accept day charter or short periods, you can always ask your broker for an appropriate selection.

You can rent a vessel for two weeks or more, but the price won’t go down for longer holidays.

Yacht rental costs that are NOT included in yacht charter base fee

Now that we’ve seen what is usually included in the charter base fee, let’s find more about all these costs that you’ll have to add to the base fee to estimate your total yacht rental cost.

APA: the main variable cost of your yacht charter (add 20%-40% to your base fee)

The charter fee usually covers the cost of renting the yacht and the crew’s salary. But you still need to pay for fuel, provisions, and other extras for your trip.

APA is the standard system to pay your expenses on a luxury yacht charter, and it is generally a percentage of the charter fee. You’ll usually end up paying between 20% and 40% more than the base cost of the yacht charter in APA.

The amount varies a lot, depending on the ship and your activities. It will increase if the yacht has a higher fuel consumption, if you plan on cruising more than 4 hours a day, if you want to have onboard particular expensive brands, etc.

What does the APA cover?

APA covers all the day-to-day operating expenses. It also includes any special requests you might have while you’re on board. 

Here are the main costs of your yacht rental the APA covers: 

Food and drink

On your yacht charter, the chef can prepare all the dishes you want, whether you are vegan or low carb, whether you have allergies or require kosher meals. Make sure that you explain your food preferences to your broker.

Fuel Charges

Your fuel costs will depend on your boat, your itinerary, and whether you choose to cruise or stay at anchor. A sailing yacht charter can cost 10% less than a motor yacht charter because the fuel consumption is smaller.

This amount also includes the fuel expenditure of any water toys and tenders you use during your charter.

Harbor fees and dockage

The harbor fees and dockage will be more or less high-priced depending on your destination and season. All these costs will be included in your APA.

Communications Costs

For most people, yachting is about enjoying life outside of the daily routine. If you can’t survive without the Internet or satellite communications, you don’t have to worry. Your yacht charter will provide you all the digital connections needed. They won’t add much to the APA, but it’s still something that comes at a price.

Delivery fee

If you board or disembark the ship outside its usual harbor, you’ll have to pay a transportation fee to cover the fuel required to get your yacht to your requested destination.

Interiors and Laundry

The APA fee includes interiors and laundry costs to keep the yacht immaculate. But if you request unique decoration, it may add an extra charge.

Personal laundry services may not be covered depending on the yacht.

Taxes: a cost that varies a lot from country to country (add between 0% and 35% on top of base charter fee)

Taxes do have an impact on the total cost of your yacht charter, especially in some destinations.

For example, in Europe, chartering a commercial vessel is subject to VAT . But fees vary significantly according to your destination and itinerary. Some countries have a 0-tax rate (Montenegro, New England), while in others a passage in the international waters can lower the VAT rate.

The taxes can vary from VAT, national parks entrance (la Maddalena in Sardinia for example), countries taxes etc. the VAT and taxes will be based on the charter fee, so make sure you discuss this with your advisor to anticipate the cost.

Here are some VAT rate applied on luxury yacht charter in 2022 :

–  Charter in France  will be at 20 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Italy  will charge 22 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Spain  will charge 21 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Croatia  will charge 13 % VAT based on charter fee

–  Charter in Greece  will charge 24 % VAT based on charter fee with a discount of 60% on charter of more than 48h ending usually at 12% VAT, this is subject to change in 2022.

Moreover some countries such as Spain or Greece charge a licence for a yacht to be able to embark passengers for a paid charter in their waters, this explains why not every yacht can cruise in all countries.

Crew gratuity: a good practice to include in the cost of your yacht charter (add 15-20% to the base charter fee)

The crew on a yacht work even if you don’t notice it. 

Serving, cleaning, preparing, fixing, they are the key elements that make your charter a success. 

Even if tipping is not strictly mandatory, it is common practice to include a tip to the team when you are satisfied by their services. 

The suggested amount is around 15-20% of your base charter rate . It is therefore important to include this amount in your yacht rental price beforehand.

Yacht charter cancellation insurance: a small cost that can save you a lot (add 15% of your base fee)

Cancelling or shortening a yacht charter can be very expensive if you don’t have cancellation insurance.

It is a small price to pay to ensure that all the money spent on your yacht charter will not go to waste if some unfortunate event leads you to miss your yacht rental.

In most cases, your cancellation insurance will cost around 15% of your charter base fee.

A typical yacht rental total cost isn’t as hard to determine as it seems when you know all the variable costs and your base fee.

Once you have your base charter fee in hands, add the following costs to estimate the final amount you’ll see on your yacht rental invoice:

• 20% – 40% on top of your base fee for APA (low end for sailing vessels, higher end for motoryachts)
• 0% – 30% of taxes and VAT on top of your base price. Highly dependant on your destination.
• 10% – 15% on top of your base fee for crew gratuity
• 15% on top of your base fee for cancellation insurance

FAQ about cost of yacht charter and APA

Small motoryachts and sailing yachts under 50 ft (15m) can be chartered from 4,000€ to 15,000€ weekly.

Chartering motoryachts and sailing yachts between 50ft and 65ft costs between 15,000€ and 40,000€ weekly.

Between 65ft (20m) and 80ft (24m), you can expect motoryachts and sailing boats charters between 40,000€ and 70,000€ weekly. Between 80ft (24m) and 100ft (30m), the cost of chartering a yacht ranges between 70,000€ and 100,000€ weekly.

For yachts over 100ft (30m), the cost of charter ranges between 100,000€ and 1,000,000€ weekly.

APA stands for Advance Provisionning Allowance. You pay this fee in advance to cover food and drinks, fuel charges, harbors fees and dockage, communication, delivery fee various fees such as cleaning or interior design.

Advance Provisionning Allowance varies depending on your travel plans. Usually, it represents a surcharge of 20% to 40% on top of the yacht charter base price.

The APA is due one month before you set sail when dispensing your final charter payment. The captain directly receives the money and will supervise all the purchases made before and during your journey. He will be responsible for ensuring the crew stays within budget and will provide receipts upon request.

APA estimations are usually accurate. The captain will keep you updated during your trip. If you decide to go over the initial payment, you can top up the APA in cash or pay the balance during your trip.

With transparent communication, realistic budgets, and advanced provisioning, you may spend less than the APA and have the difference returned to you at the end of the cruise.

Get the base charter fee of your yacht rental, add taxes, APA, crew gratuity and cancellation insurance and you will have a very close estimation of your yacht rental cost everything included.

The base charter rate includes everything that is on a yacht: cabins, amenities, water toys along with the crew. Everything else (fuel, food, taxes…) come at an extra cost.

Crew gratuity is usually comprised between 15% and 20% on top of the base charter fee for most yacht rentals.

For sailboats in tax free areas, you can get away with a total cost of 30% on top of the base rate. In extreme cases (motoryachts in high taxed countries with big tips for the crew and cancelation insurance), you can more than double the base price. Most charters should be in between within the 40-80% on top of base fee range.

Discover how the 56m/185ft motor yacht ‘My Seanna’ has transformed into one of the most opulent yachts on the charter market in YachtCharterFleet’s latest review.

Originally launched in 2001 by US shipyard Delta Marine, 'My Seanna’ changed hands in 2013 before undergoing an extensive refit at Florida’s Rybovich Shipyard. Already a successful charter yacht, she emerged from the yard after 17 months having been elevated to a whole new level of luxury.

Docked in the Antigua Yacht Club Marina, superyacht ‘My Seanna’ was unmissable as her metallic silver hull glistened in the Caribbean sunshine. Only those enlightened few, however, would know to look out for her newly lengthened aft facing decks.

Indeed, at the heart of her refit was a 7.6 metre extension, allowing for expansive spaces across her three decks as well as a chic new beach club, which has proved to be an extremely popular daytime hub among charter guests.

Built from scratch following the removal of the previous transom area, the beach club houses a 5.8 metre tender and two jet skis when underway before transforming into a contemporary waterside lounge at anchor, made possible by an upward opening garage door and overhead crane that smoothly launches the tender and toys. 

White vertical wall panels interspersed with black grooves create a monochromatic backdrop to which teak flooring, dark timber storage and free standing wooden furniture is added. Charterers can sit back here with a refreshing drink from the wet bar and catch the big game on the widescreen television just metres away from the ocean.

Disco balls, laser lights and the yacht’s extensive sound system can also convert the space into a sea-level disco, whereas a comfortable inflatable bed enables the area to serve as an additional cabin if required.  

A small set of steps leads up to the swim platform, fitted with Jet Ski stations and Opacmare transformer stairs for easy entry into the ocean, while a staircase on the port side of the beach club ascends directly to the main deck.

Once enclosed by glass panelling, the aft deck is now completely open and offers an expansive social area. A U-shaped sofa aft can accommodate both cocktail and dinner parties thanks to adjustable tables, while the raised middle section of the deck forms a central island designed to offer enviable views of the surrounds.

From the aft deck, guests can enter the main salon through sliding glass doors and receive their first impression of the yacht’s classically styled interior from Joseph Leone. Italian white marble flooring is offset by rich wooden panelling, carved into regal pillars between the large, rectangular windows.

A wing backed sofa and armchairs in luxurious cream fabrics form a lounge to port, while an oval lacquered table for 10 opposite is looked over by a glittering chandelier. Also catching the light are the accents of brushed 22 carat gold, adorning everything in sight from the walls, ceilings and furniture to the light fixtures, picture frames and cutlery. 

The gilding as well as the marble floors are present throughout the whole interior of charter yacht My Seanna, continuing the opulence and exquisite attention to detail.

In a similar style to the main salon. the skylounge boasts rich wooden timbers and an expanse of windows. However, a large curved sofa upholstered in a damask patterned fabric takes centre stage alongside a state-of-the-art, 80-inch, curved TV for a more laid back, movie night setup.

There is also an elegant bar and games table aft, which look out across the extremely spacious upper deck area, equipped for hosting large groups of people. A large alfresco dining table sits between two bars located on either side of the deck and multiple seating areas are scattered across the aft section.

The sundeck above, meanwhile, provides the perfect setup for daytime relaxation. Chaise loungers and sumptuous deck chairs bedecked in pale yellow upholstery surround a newly installed oversized Jacuzzi with a swim-up bar on either side, a waterfall feature and LED lights.

A drinks station and barbecue ensure guests never go thirsty or hungry, while a giant outdoor screen provides alfresco movie nights under the stars.

Two double cabins and two twin cabins fan out from the lower deck’s central lobby, while the reconfiguration of the sundeck has seen the addition of a new VIP suite, where two lucky guests will be treated to stunning panoramic views forward through oversized windows.

And, indeed, she is sure to keep charter guests entertained. An approved RYA watersports centre, she is equipped with a vast collection of water toys and a resident personal trainer can tailor-make fitness programmes.

It is clear to see that My Seanna offers much more than you would expect from a 56-metre superyacht. Her extensive deck areas are capable of hosting up to 150 guests quayside, and legal marriages and civil unions are even possible thanks to her Captain, Todd Lee, who is also a qualified pastor.

Yet, at the same time, she also boasts intimate lounging areas where guests can unwind with loved ones and enough entertainment options to keep the whole family entertained. The possibilities are certainly endless on board M/Y My Seanna.

What’s more, a four-person sauna is located to port under the radar arch, which also offers shade to a variety of exercise equipment, and My Seanna’s outdoor delights do not end here. A staircase to starboard leads up to a secluded crow’s nest, a new addition following the 2014 refit.

As well as outstanding views forward, the nest is home to an oversized sun pad surrounded by glass panels for privacy and safety, and a high-top table perfect for enjoying cocktails with a small group of friends or family.

After a busy day on the water, guests will be able to retreat into the charter yacht’s elegant selection of staterooms which continue the exquisite attention to detail. The master suite spans across the forward section of the main deck, and features his and hers en suites with a large central Jacuzzi tub.

Delivered in 2013 and fresh from a full refurbishment in 2019, this 65m (213.3ft) yacht has a sizeable 106sqm (1,141sqft) sun deck that guests love, with two lounge areas, one shaded and one sunny, a fully equipped sit-up bar and a large jacuzzi with sun pads aft. Surrounded by wraparound tinted windscreens, the calm and cool sun deck dining area can be utilized even on the windiest of days.

As popular as the sun deck undoubtedly is, the real star of this spectacular show is the spacious air-conditioned beach club with fully equipped bar, sauna, day head and shower. A 22sqm (237sqft) fold-out swimming platform and a 10sqm (108sqft) drop-down sea terrace to port, bring guests a genuine sense of the outdoors enhanced by the natural light shimmering through the glass-bottomed pool on the main deck aft. It's a stunning space. With additional lounging, sunbathing, and nine other dining areas on the foredeck, bridge deck and main deck, she has abundant options for social and intimate al fresco relaxation, fun and entertainment.

Inside, the grand polished steel and leather staircase encircled by walls lined with macassar links the main deck's sophisticated bar and striking formal dining room with the bridge deck's intimate sky lounge and bar.

She welcomes 12 guests in six double cabins, a full-beam master suite on the main deck with study and full-height glass sliding doors opening onto a private breakfast balcony to starboard, a VIP suite on the bridge deck and four lower deck double cabins.

ILLUSION has a top speed of 28kn, cruising happily at 15kn, and her Van Oosannen-designed hull was built for maximum efficiency, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions for guilt-free island-hopping. Calculating Boat Fuel Consumption

Calculating a boats fuel consumption proves important to boaters for number of reasons. With knowledge of a boat’s fuel economy-how much fuel the boat burns per mile or nautical mile of travel-boaters can estimate the range they can safely expect to run.

Some boaters go as far as to develop a boat fuel consumption chart for their boat. You can use any Boating boat test as a model for this. Of course, you can also install a fuel consumption monitor if your boat’s engine does not provide a fuel consumption readout.

Additionally, knowing your boat’s fuel consumption provides a good idea of how much it will cost you to operate the boat. When shopping for a new boat or marine engine, fuel consumption provides a major basis of comparison.

Estimating Your Boat’s Fuel Burn

It’s a different story with a boat. Since sea conditions vary more widely than road conditions, the time it takes to cover a distance varies more, so fuel consumption is measured in gallons per hour. Also, while many engines have fuel flow readouts , the ability to estimate fuel burn while shopping for a boat or engine is important. You measure fuel efficiency in pounds of fuel used per horsepower developed per hour. The pros call it “brake-specific fuel consumption.” This makes it important to know that gasoline weighs about 6.1 pounds per gallon and diesel fuel 7.2 pounds per gallon.

On average, an in-tune four-stroke gasoline engine will burn about 0.50 pounds of fuel per hour for each unit of horsepower. Likewise, a well-maintained diesel engine burns about 0.4 pounds of fuel per hour for each unit of horsepower it produces. These figures don’t take drag of the boat, sea conditions, or efficiency losses through transmissions and bearings into account. But they provide an excellent relative difference between engines when shopping.

Confused yet? Look at the mathematical examples below, and a boat’s fuel economy should become clear.

Boat Fuel Consumption Formulas and Calculator

Below is the Formula to Estimate Maximum Engine Fuel Consumption.

GPH = (specific fuel consumption x HP)/Fuel Specific Weight

Constants | Gas | Diesel SFC: .50 lb. per HP | .40 lb. per HP FSW: 6.1 lb. per gal. | 7.2 lb per gal.

300-hp Diesel Engine Example GPH = (0.4 x 300)/ 7.2 = 120/7.2 = 16.6 GPH

300-hp Gasoline Engine Example GPH = (0.50 x 300)/ 6.1 = 150/6.1 = 24.5 GPH

Keep in mind that these formulas apply when the engine is making peak horsepower, which usually is near wide-open throttle. Fuel consumption will be decreased at cruising speeds. Also remember that engines with electronically-managed fuel injection and direct injection will yield higher fuel efficiency .

To apply these formulas to your boat, just plug in its horsepower rating and multiply it by the specific fuel consumption average, then divide the product by the fuel specific weight.

Another way is to take the total engine horsepower and divide it by 10 for gas engines or .06 for diesel engines. As you can see, this formula is simpler to calculate and easier to remember. You don’t even need a pencil and paper. It’s just not as accurate as the formulas above. The result represents the approximate gallons per hour the engine will burn at wide-open throttle. For example, a 150-horse engine will use about 15 gallons per hour. Though these figures represent averages and can vary from 10 to 20 percent, they’ll put you in the ballpark so you can plan a long-distance cruise without fear of running out of gas . You can also keep track of your boat’s fuel consumption by installing a fuel monitor.

The Easy “Point and Click” Way to Plan your Charter Itinerary – Route, Distance, Fuel Cost and Consumption

One of the most popular and useful pages on our site is the journey planner – you can plan your route distance, cost, fuel consumption, etc. In fact, it’s the page we use the most internally when working with clients. You simply go to your starting port, and begin clicking away until you’ve planned you’re route.  The page will tell you the total distance.  Then simply add the average speed, fuel consumption per hour and price of fuel, and you have the total time of the trip, fuel consumed and cost. Chartering a yacht has become many celebrities’ favorite way to get away from it all, whether lounging on sunbeds or snorkeling remote atolls. According to Fraser Yacht’s 2021 market report, there are around 2,900 yachts available for charter in the world today. The global charter fleet keeps on growing, which means there is a charter-yacht vacation out there to suit everyone.

How to Choose the Right Yacht to Charter

Consult the pros—talk to a broker.

The biggest question for first-time charterers is where to begin. The tried-and-tested method is to engage the help of a reputable charter broker. It’s their job to understand what you would like to get from the charter and then matchmake your preferences with the most suitable yacht.

“Engaging a professional charter broker is free and they are key to ensuring your holiday is stress-free,” Alexandra Groom, charter broker at Worth Avenue Yachts, told Robb Report . “Professional charter brokers have access to exclusive databases with stringent membership, communication and ethics rules, meaning they are most likely to be able to find you the right yacht in the right location, even if what you require is off market.”

“Make sure your broker gets to know you and your family,” adds Nick Trotter, chairman of the charter committee of MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association. “Finding the right broker is often via word of mouth, so ask your friends, ask people you trust, find out what they’ve done and who they’ve done it with. The communication between you and your broker is paramount because the broker represents you, they’re acting on your behalf, so you need to be able to articulate your vision.”

Neal Hornsby, co-founder and CEO of Yomira, advocates finding out about your broker’s eco-credentials, too: “Can they offset your carbon footprint from the charter, teach the kids about the marine environment or perhaps involve you in local conservation projects if you are keen to participate during your time aboard? The right broker for you is the broker that you not only connect with, but most importantly has the credibility to back up their advice.”

Booking With Apps

For those who feel safer behind a screen, several different online platforms, such as  Ahoy Club , Yotha and Borrow a Boat allow you to scroll and book your yacht. This flexible approach embraces a younger generation of digitally minded charterers. That said, hailing a $10 taxi ride with Uber is much less risky than booking a $500,000 charter on your iPhone. So be sure you have contact info for a live human in case anything goes wrong on your charter vacation.

Finding the Right Crew for Your Needs

Equally as important when choosing a yacht is making sure the crew are a good fit. If you have children in tow, you’ll want a family-friendly crew who can keep them entertained. If you’re traveling with a group of active friends, having crew who double as watersports instructors is a great benefit. Or maybe you’ve been dreaming of a gastronomic itinerary that features a Michelin-caliber chef on board? A broker will go over all your options. June Montagne, charter consultant at IYC, recommends requesting references on the crew prior to making your final decision. “Your crew are far more important than your yacht,” she told Robb Report .

Picking Your Yachting Destination

An important element of any charter is knowing where you would like to vacation. This will also heavily influence the yacht that you end up chartering. Different yachts are based in different locations and usually move throughout the year, so if you have your heart set on experiencing Lady E ’s brand-new beach club for spring break , you’ll be cruising the Indian Ocean. If you’re more interested in exploring UNESCO World Heritage sites along Croatia’s coastline, then GECO, which cruises the Eastern Mediterranean in summer , would be a smart option.

“Decide on your group’s makeup and whether or not you have a particular destination in mind,” Katya Hall, IYC sales and charter consultant, told Robb Report . “It’s fine if you don’t—your broker will propose yachts in multiple locations and walk you through highlights of every destination.”

The most common migration is the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter. However, you will also find yachts cruising the waters of Central and South America, Antarctica, the Pacific islands, Northern Europe and even Costa Rica. In 2021, the Amalfi Coast in Italy and the Greek islands were among the most popular summer charter destinations.

Choose a Vessel That Fits Your Plan—and the Occasion

Most yachts carry the basic water toys and tenders for being towed and simple snorkeling exploration. But some yachts carry specific equipment, from personal submarines, decompression chambers for scuba diving, inflatable slides and even Hammam saunas and snow rooms. Does your charter have a theme? Or maybe you want to celebrate a birthday? Just be sure the yacht caters for your needs, whether planning a party with a DJ or hosting a business meeting.

“A yacht charter opens up destinations in ways that staying in a hotel can’t,” says Groom. “Instead of being restricted by transport links and journey times, you can start at one part of a coastline and end at another, taking in multiple islands, villages or bays in one short week, all from the comfort of your yacht. Even if a particular coastline is new to you, your captain will ensure that your trip focuses on the elements that are most important to you.”

  If you want to keep the yacht on the move, its speed, size, draft depth and flag will determine how many stops you can make. For example, cruising in the Bahamas requires a shallow draft if you want to visit out islands like the Exumas, though plenty of ports have deeper waters.

“A yacht with stabilizers is key for first time charterers if they haven’t experienced the sea before,” advises Lotte Barker-Hahlo, charter broker at Burgess.

Why Yacht Size Matters

The duration of the trip and number of guests is another consideration. One week for family and a second week for friends? Or maybe you’re planning a three-week itinerary to island hop your way around the Florida Keys. Charter brokers usually list pricings per week and most charter yachts are certified to carry 12 guests, plus crew. If you plan to vacation with more than that, you will need a PYC- or SOLAS-class yacht, which is licensed for up to 36 passengers. Yachts such as 278-foot Victorious , an explorer vessel capable of circumnavigating the world, has 12 staterooms for 24 guests plus crew.

Guest cabin configurations tend to be varied and flexible. The principal (person who booked the charter) will typically take the master suite. But yachts with large VIPs, cabins with bunks designed for kids, and twin cabins with a Pullman bed make sleeping arrangements tailored to suit your group easy. Don’t forget to include in your count any personal assistants, babysitters or other security guards. And if anyone in your party has concerns about limited mobility, factoring an elevator or stair-climber into your criteria early on is a must.

When to Book 

Once you’ve identified which yacht you prefer in your chosen destination, be sure not to leave booking until the last minute. Just like any other vacation, chartering over the summer holidays, Christmas and popular events such as the Monaco Grand Prix makes for the high-demand season.

“Only book when you’re ready!” says Hornsby. “But as with any holiday periods, July/August and Christmas/New Year are always in high demand so an early conversation with your broker is recommended. There are always some great deals to be done in the quieter months, but lead-in time is key, particularly as we emerge from a Covid world.”

In 2021, Fraser Yachts reported an increase of 56 percent in bookings across their charter fleet compared to the previous year, as well as a slight increase in the number of tandem charters—clients chartering two yachts simultaneously so more of the family could be together. Booking your charter at the last minute could mean you’re unable to secure your first, second or even third preference. If the timing and the yacht are both important, book a year in advance. If you are flexible with both dates and the yacht, most brokers can find a yacht for you.

Privacy and Personalization

Privacy and discretion form the backbone of yachting. Builders usually don’t share who the owner of a yacht is, nor do the brokers or crew. If you have concerns about the confidentiality of high-profile guests during your charter, requesting your charter broker to sign an NDA is an option. As with all elements of a bespoke yacht charter, the choice is yours, from dietary needs and favorite cocktails to service etiquette and daily activities.

If you or your travel partners are inclined to remain plugged in, most yachts feature high-speed Wi-Fi, allowing you to keep in touch as much or as little as you would like. For those keen to get out and explore, options range from shopping for local artisan goods, taking a cooking class or dropping anchor in one cove all day to dive and fish. It’s up to you how you spend your time, just be sure to give the crew a heads-up so they know what to be prepared for.

Yacht Charter Costs: What Should You Expect to Pay?

The final step is the contract. Most brokers use the MYBA contract or something similar. All these decisions lead down to the bottom line: How much does it cost?

“Ask for all expenses involved,” says Montagne. “Does the charter fee include expenses or are they are additional? Is there any tax or VAT payable? What percentage is acceptable in the area you will be chartering? What about liability and trip cancellation insurance?” All these points need to be considered.

As an example, for the 2021 summer season, the 160-foot Rossinavi EIV superyacht, with five cabins and nine crew chartered in the Mediterranean from approximately $280,000 per week. The overall price varies with fuel consumption (staying in port or cruising), location (France or Greece), the number of people you are traveling with, food and drink, as well as activities. Adding in food and drink; expenses for docking, fuel and other fees; and tips will tack roughly 30 to 50 percent of the charter rate to your trip. So, if you were on  EIV  for a week last summer, it most likely cost you between $364,000 and $420,000 depending on how often the yacht moved, how many bottles of rosé you went through, and what kind of gratuity you left the crew for your incredible stay on board.

How Yacht Size and Destination Determine Price

When it comes to costs, the size of the yacht matters. A smaller yacht will cost less, while the 446-foot Flying Fox , one of the largest charter yachts on the market accommodating 25 guests and with an unprecedented 4,300-square-foot two-floor spa, charters from around $3,400,000 per week.

Certain destinations, such as Patagonia or Kamchatka, may bring a different set of fees if you intend on heli-skiing, while heavily protected locations like Antarctica and the Galapagos require permits confirmed in advance. Wherever you cruise, you will heavily rely on the knowledge, professionalism and help of the crew, so it goes without saying that the service tip is a crucial fee that should factor into your expenses.

How Much to Tip the Crew

MYBA suggests five to 15 percent as customary, though it’s left up to your discretion to reward an exceptional crew with a larger amount if you think that’s fair, or a smaller amount if the service hasn’t been up to par. In terms of how to hand the tip over, standard procedure is to leave the gratuity with the captain at the end of your stay so he or she can divvy among the various crew members you may or may not have seen, based on their duties.

All that’s left is to prepare to have a vacation of your lifetime. “There is nothing that compares to spending time on the water with your family and friends,” says Hall. “It’s about enjoying watersports, having exquisite meals and discovering magical spots of the world along the way.”
