Author

Fans of Hampton history, and especially of pleasure boating in the area, mark your calendar: James Shoemaker has written a history of the Hampton Yacht Club, and he’ll give a talk at the Hampton History Museum on April 1.

The club got its start in 1907 as the Virginia Yacht Club, but it fell dormant because of World War I and then Prohibition, Shoemaker writes. What happened to revitalize it? A theft of liquor from boats moored next to it in about 1926, he says, drawing on George and Jane Webb’s book “The Best on the Bay.” One boat owner, he writes, “told his barber that what the area needed was a suitable yacht club where a gentleman could store his private property safe from the hands of thieves.”

“The History of the Hampton Yacht Club,” published through Palmetto Publishing, is the Williamsburg resident’s first book. His father, he says, was a charter member of the club, and died when Shoemaker was a child.

Details: Author talk, 7 p.m. April 1, Hampton History Museum, 120 Old Hampton Lane, Hampton. Free. 757-727-1102. Books are also available at the yacht club.

You Saw It Coming Dept.: First, federal budgets. “In what has become an annual rite under the Trump administration, the president’s fiscal year 2020 budget proposal calls for the elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts. Trump’s initial budgets for both fiscal 2018 and 2019 also called for cutting the NEA, but each time the House restored funds for the organization and last year gave the NEA a $3 million increase.” So said Publishers Weekly — which separately reported that for the third straight year, the administration proposed killing the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and virtually all federal library funding.

Second, the NBC staff member who said she had an affair with Matt Lauer — an assertion that led to his firing in late 2017 — is trying to get a book deal, reported Page Six.

Potter stays: Arthur A. Levine, the editor credited with bringing the Harry Potter books to the U.S., is leaving Scholastic to found his own company. He says its titles will “center on diversity, ideally with a mix of 75% minority creators, including people of color, Indigenous people, and LGBTQ individuals.” (Publishers Weekly)

“The Poisonwood Bible” eventually will become a TV series. Amy Adams is starting a production company, Bond Group Entertainment, with her manager Stacy O’Neil; first up is Kingsolver’s novel. (Deadline)

More books in translation: HarperCollins has created an imprint, HarperVia, to focus on publishing international works in English worldwide. They’ll mostly be fiction; Harper wants those that “celebrate the universal desire for discovery, understanding, and connection through exceptional storytelling. The first three include “Lost in the Spanish Quarter” by Heddi Goodrich, the tale of a first love between two young people, an Italian and an American. (Shelf Awareness)

Awards: To Tommy Orange, the $25,000 PEN/Hemingway Award for his debut novel “There There.” … The E.B. White Award, to children’s book author Katherine Paterson (“The Bridge to Terabithia,” others). The lifetime achievement award is given every two years by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. … Honors from the National Book Critics Circle – an association of professional reviewers – went to Christopher Bonanos, Anna Burns, Steve Coll, Nora Krug, Ada Limón and Zadie Smith.

Obituaries: W.S. Merwin, “the beloved former U.S. poet laureate and environmental advocate who wrote most often of absence and remembrance,” was 91. … Al Silverman, who co-wrote Gale Sayers’ book “I Am Third,” which became the film “Brian’s Song,” was 92. (He also wrote “The Time of Their Lives: The Golden Age of Great American Book Publishers, Their Editors and Authors.”) (Publishers Weekly)

New and recent

“Queen Bey: A Celebration of the Power and Creativity of Beyonce Knowles-Carter,” edited by Veronica Chambers (St. Martin’s, 224 pp.). Essays about the Beyonce phenomenon from multiple angles, including politics and business.

From Lisa See, “The Island of Sea Women,” which builds on the history of the Jeju Island Mermaids of South Korea; these haenyeo have long supported their families by fishing — free-diving deep into the ocean. (Scribner, 384 pp.)

HAMPTON YACHT CLUB FOUNDATION

Mission statement.

The Hampton Yacht Club Foundation (the “Foundation”) is a corporation organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.

The Foundation promotes participation in boating, education and environmental awareness through collaborative programming, fundraising and community partnerships. The mission includes

supporting amateur youth sailing, youth sailing instruction, water safety instruction, amateur youth sailboat racing, boating and marine education and other activities conducted through the junior sailing program operated by the Hampton Yacht Club, Inc. (“HYC”),

supporting adult sailing, sailing instruction, water safety instruction, sailboat racing, boating and marine education and other activities conducted for the benefit of the members of HYC and the general public, and

supporting other boating and maritime-related activities.

The Foundation plans to achieve its Mission through several initiatives, including

supporting the Junior Sailing program at HYC, including needs-based scholarships to support participants in the program’s various sailing camps and, where possible, by accepting boat donations either for re-sale, for use in the Junior Sailing  program or for use in the HYC adult sailing program,

working with organizations which emphasize youth learn-to-sail, especially for youth who would not normally have an opportunity to learn to sail, including by providing needs-based scholarships to these youths, and

working with youth sailing programs to encourage their students to participate in youth sailing racing at HYC, including by providing needs-based scholarships to these youths if needed.

In 1903, Hampton’s boating enthusiasts founded the Virginia Yacht Club and in 1906 issued stock and erected a clubhouse on pilings at the foot of Victoria Boulevard. Interest dwindled during the Great War and the clubhouse fell into disrepair. In 1926, six men, not associated with the Virginia Yacht Club, formed the Hampton Yacht Club (HYC) and were ceded gratis the property of the old club. Since that time, HYC has been a yachting and social center of the Virginia Peninsula.
