NZ loses a giant of boat designing and building

Jim Young

He had an "obsession with boats and everything that makes them tick" and it led to one of the biggest influences on the New Zealand yachting and boating community.

Well known designer and boatbuilder Jim Young passed away yesterday, aged 94.

He is best known for designing the first canting keel in New Zealand, probably anywhere in the world, and his NZ 37, Young 88 and Young 11 designs have been highly successful worldwide, providing joy to cruisers and racers alike. He also had a major influence on powerboating, and the Vindex and formula powerboats were decades ahead of their time.

Young was recognised for his contribution to yachting and boating in 2012 when he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit and had been looking forward to watching next year's America's Cup from his lounge in Takapuna.

"My condolences and those of the yachting community go out to Jim’s family,"  Yachting New Zealand chief executive David Abercrombie said . "His contribution was more than just significant, and his legacy will probably out live us all."

Young was fascinated by boats, even before his first sailing experience as a 15-year-old on Tamaki Estuary.

"My father made me a model yacht and I used to tow it along puddles in the ruts made by tyres at the bus stop," he told the North Shore Times in 2012.

Young began a boatbuilding apprenticeship in 1940 at the age of 15 and said a lot of what he learned was self-taught. The first boat he built was a Z-Class in the loft of a Devonport bakery.

"In those days to build a kauri boat you had to travel up north, buy a standing kauri tree and then have it air dried for nine months before it was ready to use," he said.  "Everybody had to build their own boats, right down to the cleats and the pulley blocks and that's what made New Zealanders such great sailors."

Young was certainly a handy sailor as well, winning the  Sanders Cup in 1949 with a self-built X-Class boat at a time when it was considered the country's premier sailing regatta.

“[That win] really got me going," Young said in a recent interview posted on the Northcote Birkenhead Yacht Club website. "It was the very boost that I needed. I really got started on designing and building after this."

What followed was a succession of breakthrough craft.

He was involved in building the first naval vessel in New Zealand, the HMS Hinau , as well as the Fiery Cross (1953),  a swing-keel speedster that was the first laminated keeler built upside down in New Zealand, and Tango (1953), the first cruising yacht with a fin keel and spade rudder.

Young soon pioneered racing and cruising catamarans here, including Kitty , which won the Australasian unrestricted 12-foot championship in 1958. After that multi-hulls were banned.

In 1961 he created the Vindex, a fast planing launch, at a time when importation of big motors was restricted, and in 1 967 NZ37 Namu hit the water to shock the local racing fraternity. The highly-popular Young 88 and Young 11 soon followed.

" Jim and his designs have had a major impact on the cruising and racing adventures of thousands of sailors and their families," Young 88 president Mike Leyland said. "We are proud to continue Jim’s legacy on one of his most successful designs, with more than 160 Young 88s actively racing and cruising 40 years after it was designed.

"His presence at Young 88 regattas and events, occasionally lengthy speeches and always good humour will be sadly missed."

Young 88

In 1993, two of his designs won division one and division two of Cowes Week, a remarkable feat.

Young always had an altruistic view of yacht design and boat building, with the consumer always at the forefront of his thinking.

"Although I have always been a yacht designer, I am interested in boats of all types - fishing boats, powerboats, tugs, dinghies, flat-bottom punts, catamarans, trimarans," he said. "They all have their place.

"Remember this: If a boat is designed for a particular purpose and achieves that purpose, then it is a good design. That is the challenge we face."

Young is survived by his wife Anne and a large family of children, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Of the grandchildren, a few will try to carry on his name in one way or another. Stephen Young is at Southern Spars / Rigpro in Palma, James Hilt served his apprenticeship at Yachting Developments and went on to win a major contest with a design he helped create in Sydney, Kelsey Muir is vice-commodore at the Ponsonby Cruising Club and Aaron Young is vice-commodore at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

His grandfather had a significant influence on Aaron Young, who wrote a note to Squadron members yesterday that would have saddened many but also left others with a smile.

"Thanks to the club for allowing the cobweb group to continue meeting as they do where they can share their old stories and relive their youth'," Aaron Young wrote. "This meant a lot to Jim to be invited back into this group a few years ago. Just short of his 95th birthday, he had been unwell for a while and said only a few weeks ago he may have to give up his membership at the RNZYS because he cant get up the stairs. We advised him there was a lift that he promptly said, 'well, no one bloody told me!

"He was genuinely looking forward to seeing the America's Cup from his lounge but, sadly, will miss this now. I am sure he will still be yelling from wherever he is as to what they should have done, just as he did at me during dinghy sailing many years ago. The family are planning a celebration of his life at some stage but in the meantime raise a glass to him and for what he has done for New Zealand boating."

JIM YOUNG ONZM

Boating New Zealand was saddened to hear of Jim Young’s final bar crossing on 18th June. One of this country’s most innovative designer/boatbuilders, summarising Young’s career in a few words is a difficult task.

Born in Wellington in 1925, he began his boatbuilding apprenticeship with Shipbuilders Ltd in 1940 and spent the latter part of WWII working at Associated Boatbuilders building Fairmile launches.

After the war he served with the J Force in Japan for 18 months, before going into partnership to build dinghies with the late Jack Taylor.

Young went out on his own in 1949 and within a short time was making a name for designing and building innovative boats. Keelers such as Tango and Fiery Cross had features – a spade rudder and a canting keel respectively – years ahead of their time. A pioneer advocate of multihulls, Young built his first catamaran in 1953. His 1958 3.6m Kitty catamaran was so fast it was banned from the Q Class. Young later designed numerous fast cruising multihulls.

In 1961 he designed and built the 10m planing launch Vindex, which became the archetypal launch of this type. He eventually designed a whole range of launches including GRP production versions based on Vindex.

In the 1970s Young designed, built and skippered the IOR racing keelers Checkmate and Heatwave, the lessons learned being incorporated into hugely successful racing yachts such as Positive Touch, Extreme and Camp Freddy.

He also developed a comprehensive range of stitch-and-tape trailer sailers and dinghies for amateur builders, with many hundreds being built.

His cruiser/racer keelers such as Namu and Jipco were so successful they became stock production boats, while his 8.8m cruiser/racer Tickled Pink became the plug for the GRP production Young 88. Designed in 1980, over 180 Y88s were built and the class remains hugely popular today.

While he officially retired in 1990, he never stopped designing. Sadly, few of his later designs were built.

“Most of my ideas just sail across the drawing board these days,” he wryly told me a few years ago. But he remained keenly interested in boats – from classics to the latest AC creations – right to the end of his life.

Young was highly regarded by his peers, who typically described him as “brilliant”, “genius”, “lateral thinker”, “innovative” and “fearless.” He was awarded an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2012.

He’s survived by his wife Anne; children Frank, Adrienne and Wendy; grandchildren Arron, Stephen, Jenni, James, Alix and Kelsey; and 11 grandchildren.

Jim Young Trailer Sailer Hi there and hello from sunny Cairns, I am looking at a 20 foot Jim Young Trailer Sailer to buy but cannot find a thing on the web. Is this a good or bad thing? Any ideas or clues on the performance etc of this boat type? Any info appreciated. Cheers, Ally.

Jim Young desings Hi Ally, I know this is a late reply, however I just came across it and joined! However the Jim Young 6m is a Water Ballest ply trailer sailer designed as you mentioned by Jim Young from New Zealand. The version also comes in a 5m, 6, 6,7 and 7m I believe, however I am no expert. I am currently restoring a 6m Young which was built in Portland South West Victoria. The boats are qute quick and manoverale but the best aspect is the weight whcih is approx 550kg when dry. This means that it can be towed easily by a normal car. I am also looking for anyone else out there with a Young for more information although I do have the original plans plus access to the people who built her. Hope this helps..BTW Gypsea looks like a very tidy vessel Kind Regards, Al

Jim Young is well and truly retired and was before web sites became common and as such you won't find a web page with details of his designs. It used to be possible to buy his plans from Roger Hill, although IIRC this is no longer the case. If you are genuinely looking to buy plans try looking Jim up in the Auckland phone book.

Thanks for your response Ramona & Chris I have experienced the same issues with overpowering over 15 knots, however for a boat that light I think this is quite normal. I simply reef down when the winds get aout 15 and it is good. Keeps you on your toes I have found. I am looking to race next season as well and would be keen to chat with the owner of the boat you sail on out of Port Kembla. I am also keen to talk to all other owners out there of this great design (ues I spelt it right this time).

I never had anything to do with Jim's sail designs, but just felt the urge to say that the 40' Vindex gameboats he designed were brilliant for their time. Name's like "Simone" and many of the others taken from the moulds were (and some still are) regarded as amoung the best gamefishermen in the Cairns heavy tackle fleet. And to be the best in the Cairns fleet is to be the best in the world.

Hi there I have a young 7.8 metre water ballasted trailer yacht. I've had this yacht for around 6 months now and after doing a major restoration of her she is now sailing. We have had her out several times now and every time I sail her I become more impressed with the design. Ply construction is easy to repair and maintain, the boats are light, easy to launch, retrieve and tow. Most importantly they sail beautifully and are really safe. We've had ours out in 40 knots with a reef in and she still went to weather fine. I've also laid her over with the spreaders in the water thanks to a snapped kite pole and she had no tendancy to capsize and popped back up without shipping any water once we got the kite under control. She's certainly not a sportboat greyhound like the young rocket but is major bang for buck and a very nice spacious design. I'm very happy with performance Cheers Phil

New modification of Russian VVER-440 fuel loaded at Paks NPP in Hungary

DECEMBER 14, 2020 — After the recent refueling at power unit 3 of the Hungarian Paks NPP, its VVER-440 reactor has been loaded with a batch of fresh fuel including 18 fuel bundles of the new modification. The new fuel will be introduced at all four operating power units of the Paks NPP, and the amount of new-modification bundles in each refueling will be increased gradually.

Development of the new VVER-440 fuel modification was completed in 2020 under the contract between TVEL JSC and MVM Paks NPP Ltd. Its introduction would optimize the hydro-uranium ratio in the reactor core, enabling to increase the efficiency of fuel usage and advance the economic performance of the power plant operation. All VVER-440 fuel modifications are manufactured at the Elemash Machine-Building Plant, a facility of TVEL Fuel Company in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

Paks Nuclear Power Plant

“Introduction of a new fuel is an option to improve technical and economic performance of a nuclear power plant without substantial investment. We are actively engaged in development of new models and modifications of VVER-440 fuel for power plants in Europe. The projects of the new fuels for Loviisa NPP in Finland, Dukovany NPP in the Czech Republic, Mochovce and Bohunice NPPs in Slovakia, are currently at various stages of implementation. Despite the same reactor model, these projects are quite different technically and conceptually, since we take into account the individual needs and requirements of our customers,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

For reference:

The project of development and validation of the new fuel has been accomplished with participation of a number of Russian nuclear industry enterprises, such as OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests.

Paks NPP is the only functioning nuclear power plant in Hungary with total installed capacity 2000 MWe. It operates four similar units powered by VVER-440 reactors and commissioned one by one in 1982-1987. Currently, Paks NPP is the only VVER-440 plant in the world operating in extended 15-monthes fuel cycle. The power plant produces about 15 bln kWh annually, about a half of electric power generation in Hungary. In 2018, the project of increasing the duration of Paks NPP fuel cycle won the European competition Quality Innovation Award in the nomination “Innovations of large enterprises”. Russian engineers from TVEL JSC, Kurchatov Institute, OKB Gidropress, Bochvar Institute and Elemash Machine-building plant provided assistance to the Hungarian colleagues in accomplishment of the project.

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom incorporates enterprises for the fabrication of nuclear fuel, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and design organizations. It is the only supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants. TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom provides nuclear fuel for 73 power reactors in 13 countries worldwide, research reactors in eight countries, as well as transport reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world operates on fuel manufactured by TVEL.  www.tvel.ru
