The Hatteras Acquisition

hatteras yachts ownership

Kusler Yachts provides insight and updates on the acquisition of Hatteras Yachts.

The White River Marine Group, part of the Bass Pro Shops family of brands, purchased Hatteras Yachts and facility in New Bern, North Carolina. The White River Marine Group is the world’s largest boating manufacturer. Its holdings include lines: Ranger, Mako, Tracker, and a number of others.

The White River Marine Group boasts a long history of boating innovation. Its origin lies in the 1978 when Johnny Morris introduced the Bass Tracker. The Tracker was bass fishing’s first every ready-to-fish boat, motor and trailer package.  The company’s platform and history of innovation are well suited to ushering in the next era of Hatteras.

With the acquisition of Hatteras, the company plans a large investment in the New Bern, North Carolina facility. In addition to continuing to produce Hatteras Yachts, White River Marine Group plans to relocate its Mako and Ranger Saltwater manufacturing to North Carolina. The vision includes expansion of the Hatteras yard, both increasing capacity and providing a saltwater base of operations for White River Marine.

Johnny Morris on the Purchase

Johnny Morris, owner of Bass Pros Shops and White River Marine Group, announcing the purchase of Hatteras Yachts.

The move brings clarity to the situation surrounding Hatteras Yachts. It also promises stability. Johnny Morris, the owner of Bass Pro Shops and the White River marine Group, described the acquisition with genuine passion and excitement.

“We are inspired by the many similarities between the pride and passion of the master boat builders from our home in the Ozarks and the legendary boat builders of North Carolina and the New Bern area in particular. Both share the same genuine commitment to American craftsmanship, with scores of family members working together and generations of highly experienced boat builders taking pride in what they do,” said Morris.

“We’re committed to support Hatteras in staying true to its roots as a legendary saltwater brand built by a passion for fishing while expanding our operations to better serve all those who love the sea,” explains Johnny Morris.

The acquisition, announced on Thursday May 20, 2021, was a well-guarded secret. The announcement showcased White River Marine Group’s excitement and incredible profile. In attendance were not only Johnny Morris and the executives from WRMG, but also North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Nascar legend Richard Childress and Daytona 500 winner Austin Dillon.

The initial reaction from the sportfishing industry has been overwhelmingly positive. Morris announced sweeping donations to conservation groups in North Carolina and those dedicated to offshore fishing.

This is an exciting time for Hatteras and those who love the brand.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced the purchase in the Hatteras New Bern, N.C. plant standing in front of the 40’ fiberglass NitWits, the first Hatteras ever built more than 60 years ago.

Image 4406:

The company will make a significant investment in New Bern, creating its first coastal manufacturing site and adding Hatteras to its portfolio of well-known brands.

“Boat and marine manufacturing requires specialized and experienced workers, and White River Marine knows our state can deliver the people they need to successfully expand their business in New Bern,” said Governor Cooper.

White River Marine Group White River Marine Group (WRMG), an affiliate of Missouri-based Bass Pro Shops, is the world’s largest manufacturer of boats. Founded by noted angler and conservationist Johnny Morris, WRMG builds legendary performance boat brands like TRACKER, the No. 1 fishing boat in America for the past 45 years in terms of units sold, and ASCEND, the world’s best-selling kayaks. Other leading brands include MAKO, Ranger, Nitro, Triton, Tahoe, Sun Tracker and Regency pontoon boats.

The expansion will shift the focus of the company’s saltwater manufacturing from the Midwest to the sea, closer to the saltwater market and a thriving community of craftsmen and women. The company will continue to support and grow Hatteras, as well as relocate production of iconic saltwater boat brands MAKO and Ranger Saltwater to New Bern, which is a premier location for saltwater fishing.

Major Investment in Hatteras Manufacturing Plans call for a major investment to modernize the Hatteras facility and establish a state-of-the-art coastal manufacturing center generating hundreds of new jobs. Consistent with Bass Pro’s reputation for turning shopping for outdoor gear into an experiential adventure, the plant will offer customers demo rides on the Atlantic Ocean and opportunities to tour the factory. It will also serve as an R&D center for sea-trialing and product development across all three brands.

Morris is a big fan of the area and has spent many days fishing in the Outer Banks for big tuna and marlin. The local sportfishing culture is a major inspiration for the company to relocate its saltwater manufacturing.

Morris is a Long-Time Fan of Hatteras Yachts “With Hatteras’ rich heritage of craftsmanship and access to some of the world’s best offshore angling, our aim is to help solidify New Bern as the world’s capital for saltwater gamefish and boat building,” said noted conservationist and avid angler Johnny Morris, who founded and grew both Bass Pro Shops and White River Marine Group to become North America’s premier outdoor and conservation company.

“We love the passion for fishing and commitment to craftsmanship found in New Bern. We’re very grateful to Governor Cooper and his team, as well as local officials and leaders including Craven County Manager Jack Veit and Craven County Board of Commissioners Chairperson Jason Jones for their genuine welcoming spirit and their leadership in supporting our vision to invest in this incredible angling community.”

“The marine trades are an important part of North Carolina’s heritage,” said North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “It’s great to see a company with the leadership and reputation of White River Marine choose our state for this important expansion of their company.”

The regional economy will benefit from a more than $22 million payroll impact each and every year.

North Carolina Sugar White River Marine Group’s project in North Carolina will be facilitated by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee earlier today. Over the course of the 12-year term of this grant, the project is estimated to grow the state’s economy by $1.17 billion. Using a formula that takes into account the new tax revenues generated by the new jobs, the JDIG agreement authorizes the potential reimbursement to the company of up to $5,441,400, spread over 12 years. State payments only occur following performance verification by the departments of Commerce and Revenue that the company has met its incremental job creation and investment targets. JDIG projects result in positive net tax revenue to the state treasury, even after taking into consideration the grant’s reimbursement payments to a given company.

White River Marine’s JDIG agreement could also move as much as $604,600 into a fund that helps rural communities across the state attract business in the future. When companies select a site located in a Tier 2 county such as Craven, their JDIG agreements move some of the new tax revenue into the state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account. Local communities in more economically challenged areas of the state use grants from the Utility Account to build public infrastructure projects, which can improve a community’s ability to attract companies to their regions.

“It’s great to see the next chapter open for this important manufacturing site in our region,” said N.C. Representative Steve Tyson. “White River Marine Group is the number one company in their industry, and we welcome the new jobs and investment they’re bringing to New Bern and Craven County.”

“Great economic development announcements don’t happen by themselves,” said N.C. Senator Norman Sanderson. “I’m proud of the many community partners that worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help us reach this achievement. All of us will continue to support the company as they put down roots and grow here.”

Partnering with the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. on this project were the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Community College System, the North Carolina Department of Revenue, Craven County, the Craven 100 Alliance, North Carolina’s Southeast, and the Craven County Economic Development Department.

Hatteras Yacht announced today that it has named board member Gary Smith as Chief Executive Officer and Dave Goodman as Chief Financial Officer. According to The Superyacht Agency, Hatteras has delivered a total of 38 30m-plus superyacht projects since delivering its first in 2019. Since 2010, however, the US shipbuilder has only delivered six superyacht projects, with its most prolific delivery year coming in 2014 when it delivered two vessels. After a two year hiatus, the yard returned to superyacht production with a single delivery in 2019 and with another due for delivery in 2020, Hatteras’ superyacht output seems to be stabilising.

Ownership. Yes, finally announced, Johnny Morris has acquired Hatteras Yachts. White River Marine Group was already the largest boat builder in the country. So, now it's official.

I heard this yesterday while ironically looking at a Mako at Bass Pro Shops from the Manager there.
And in my opinion it's good. You have deep pockets and you have a real boater. You have an offshore fisherman worth about $4 billion. You have a man with a proven history of success in taking brands like Mako to new heights.
Hatteras Yachts Acquired - Trade Only Today It says they're moving Ranger Boats and Mako boats to the New Bern Hatteras facility.
Only the Saltwater portion of Ranger. However, large expansion. Some other key points. 1-Lauren Good to be in charge of the operation so new management. 2-No mention of Cabo in any of the releases. Thinking Mako and Ranger Saltwater may preclude it. 3-Large expansion in terms of facility and people. 4-Emphasis on Salt water fishing. De-emphasis on Motor Yachts. Should someone step in and see if Cabo is for sale to be split out? Or should they see about buying the Hatteras name to build motor yachts only? Check on any business segments, Morris isn't interested in.
I highly doubt Hatteras will stop producing motor yachts. They build a LOT of motor yachts.. Cabo, that I don't know. Cabo has been the red headed step child since they were moved to New Bern. It does say that they're putting $35 million into the facility, so that is good. Tracker brands are known for plant efficiency, so that is good as well. The problem I see, is can they get enough skilled workforce to support all brands in a small city like New Bern.

I have high hopes for this, hopefully they will have someone that has a keen interest in the product and bring them back to what they once were. I spent a lot of time there in the mid 90's building several boats and have a lot of fond memories of New Bern and my time at the factory. This is good all around for the local work force. Now if JM would build the Seacrafts again or let someone else do it!

YachtForums said: ↑ Ditto Randy! IMO, the 25 Seacraft was one of the best CCs in that range. Hard to find a good one these days. Some of the late model Seacrafts, circa 2002-2005 were built by Tracker (I think!). Wiring was a rat's nest on these boats, but hard to beat the ergonomics or the ride of Potter's original inverted strake design. Sorry to derail. Back to Hatteras now... Click to expand...
I feel your PITA. Been kicking mine ever since I passed on a 2005 25' w/200 optis around 400 hours. It was hi/dry indoor stored on the west coast, owned by a captain of a Westport. The boat was priced at $36k and I couldn't justify it because it didn't have a trailer. Good examples are asking $50k plus for these boats and I know many have changed hands in the 40s.

olderboater said: ↑ I think perhaps Morris will be more flexible and open to the discussion at least. May not wanting it out there competing with Mako though. However, with the thought of you moving it back to the West Coast and Mako far more on the East Coast, he may take that into consideration. Of course valuing an asset that isn't really being used becomes interesting. Versa, much like Brunswick, always wanted to sell them together but wanted more than they were worth. Had other deals to fall through and I suspect came close to losing this one more than once. But WRMG needed the manufacturing capability and did all the work to find every possible incentive the area and the state would provide. As a strict purchase of Hatteras, they never make this deal. It was all based on what they plan to do with the facility, Mako and Ranger Saltwater, the incentives and everything else involved. They put together a deal that made sense for them but wouldn't have for anyone else. They were also a bit of a last hope for a sale at this time. It was a bit of "they're paying for the potential as they plan things, not based on the current value of the operations and you better make a deal with them." It's like so many sales, if you intended just to take it over and run it the same way it has been run, makes zero sense to purchase anywhere close to the asking price. Click to expand...

Hatteras names Guy Roberts to lead New Bern Plant Operations as company readies for launch of next generation, high-performance sportfish boats

hatteras yachts ownership

Hatteras announced three new next-generation models coming in 2024, including the “Bimini Run” (above).

NEW BERN, N.C. (March 14, 2024) – White River Marine Group, the world’s largest builder of fishing and recreational boats, has announced the addition of Guy Roberts to serve as plant manager for its Hatteras Yachts facility in New Bern, N.C.

“We are very excited to have Guy come on board to lead manufacturing in New Bern,” said Johnny Morris, noted angler- conservationist and founder of Bass Pro Shops and White River Marine Group. “Guy has a passion for his people, and his experience in the manufacturing industry is a perfect fit for this position as we prepare to introduce the all new Hatteras, high-performance sportfishing boats.”

Guy is an avid boater who loves spending time on the water with his family. He is also a highly respected and experienced leader in manufacturing. His professional experience lies as a hands-on leader, who has been heavily involved in the transformation of plants, people and culture.

“I am incredibly thrilled and humbled to be able to step into this position,” Guy said. “There is no brand in the boating world that is as respected as White River Marine Group, and Hatteras Yachts has a history that is unparalleled when it comes to quality and workmanship. It is an honor to step into this role.”

Morris announced the acquisition of Hatteras in May 2021, bringing a significant expansion of White River Marine Group’s saltwater manufacturing footprint to New Bern, North Carolina.  The company moved the iconic saltwater brand, MAKO along with Ranger Saltwater to New Bern over two years ago.  These moves help establish New Bern, North Carolina as the new world capital for offshore boat building.

Hatteras leapt to the forefront of the sportfishing industry more than 60 years ago, with ruggedly built saltwater boats that earned a reputation for high performance. It has set the standard for luxury sportfishing yachts, offering the utmost in beauty, quality and innovation for sportsmen and women around the world.

Over many years, Hatteras has earned a reputation for industry-leading performance, innovation and seaworthiness. Engineered to stand up to the unforgiving conditions of North Carolina, Hatteras Yachts can be found all over the world. The brand’s trademark lies not only in technical innovation, but in the effortless blending of luxury with performance.

Building on the legendary legacy of the storied brand, Hatteras will continue to build exceptional quality sportfishing boats and recently announced significant investments in plant operations and tooling to prepare for the introduction of three new models.
