1982 CHB Krogen 42

"magic dragon", description, asking price reduced another $5,000. sellers are motivated and all reasonable offers are encouraged..

This unique and superb example of the iconic Krogen-designed 42’ trawler built by Chien Hwa Boats (CHB) comes to market as her sellers are pursuing new adventures. Over their ten years of ownership, "MAGIC DRAGON" , one of only 5 of 206 total 42s built with twin engines, has benefited from constant upgrades and loving care. She is striking in appearance with her rich custom topside paint and Oyster white topside Awlgrip.

Records found on board indicate that "MAGIC DRAGON" was commissioned at the Chien Hwa yard (the birthplace of all Krogen 42s) by a Hollywood special effects director, who’s movie credits include The Godfather III, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, and The Wiz to name a few. His artistic eye for detail may be why he added some special touches to the build, including the hand carved teak dragon in the galley/salon, waves carved in the salon trim, carved doors, solid onyx stone galley counter, and granite head countertops, to name a few.

In the early 1990s the boat was berthed in the Norfolk, VA area and owned by a couple who renamed the boat "DASH" once they became empty nesters. Then in the early 2000s the boat was renamed "MAGIC DRAGON" by new owners in NC.

She was purchased by her current owners from the Krogen dealer in Stuart, FL in 2008. Since then she has been lived aboard full time and traveled the East Coast. She was berthed primarily in Philadelphia, PA, Delaware City, DE, St. Petersburg, FL and Palmetto, FL.

Over their ten years of ownership, "MAGIC DRAGON" has seen constant upgrades and care. This care has not been limited to superficial, cosmetic work. She has been enhanced mechanically, structurally, and cosmetically as described in detail in this listing. She is ready for new caretakers with a sense of adventure to embark on the next phase of this remarkable trawler’s life.

Additional info, vessel walkthrough.

The boat may be boarded via either port and starboard entrance gates adjacent the pilothouse doors via custom MarQuipt boarding steps, or via the swim platform and transom door. Here you are greeted with one of the many design elements that Jim Krogen got right on this boat, namely a spacious, deep, covered cockpit. The cockpit sole provides access to a large lazarette for gear stowage. Covered, deep, and secure sidedecks provide safe and secure passage fore ’n aft.

Entering the salon via double doors, you are greeted with a spacious area for dining and relaxing. Superb woodwork is everywhere and contributes to the warm feel of the space. This area is furnished with two reclining chairs to port and a settee to starboard with an entertainment center aft on the starboard side. Large sliding windows port and starboard provide ample light and ventilation.

Next to starboard and forward is the well updated and equipped galley. To port is a ladderwell to the pilothouse. It is well equipped and updated with ample chart storage and numerous lockers for additional storage. Port and starboard sliding doors provide ready access to the sidedecks as well as light and ventilation. The door hatches are equipped with custom screens as are the pilothouse windows for privacy and heat reduction.

Access to the living quarters is via the midship companionway leading forward from the salon. A washer dryer combo is installed to port. Next, forward and to port is the head with an Air Head composting toilet and custom built shower. To starboard is the guest stateroom. With its Pullman style upper berth, this space can provide an ideal office area if guests are not embarked.

Moving forward to the master stateroom, the berth with custom mattress is to starboard, with a large hanging locker and drawers to port. Nine large drawers beneath the berth provide copious storage. Moving forward gives access to the second head. This area features a custom sink and granite countertop and shower. There is ample storage. Furthest forward is the anchor chain locker.

Back in the cockpit, a ladder provides access to the boat deck and flybridge. The flybridge is noteworthy for its raised helm platform which is 24” higher than the standard Krogen 42, providing excellent visibility all ‘round. The flybridge helm is fully equipped with upgraded electronics and a new instrument panel. The flybridge base provides the propane locker and voluminous storage areas.

Back down on deck, sidedeck ladderwells port and starboard provide access to the foredeck and pulpit. An inviting bench seat just forward of the pilothouse provides storage underneath. Ground tackle and windlass are beefy and easily accessible via the reinforced pulpit.

Brokers Comments

MAGIC DRAGON represents an incredible opportunity for the serious trawler buyer. She has been well cared for and upgraded by her remarkably diligent owners. They are proactive and thorough caretakers, and they are meticulous record keepers. In addition to keeping a detailed cruising log with the usual associated entries, they have kept a thoroughly detailed maintenance log that documents every action that has been taken on the vessel. At last count there were 561 documented maintenance actions taken since 2008. Each entry details what was done, when, by whom, and what parts were used. The spreadsheet contains multiple tabs outlining spares, spares locations, associated vendors and sources of supply, and digitized OEM manuals. I’ve quite simply never seen this level of detail on a recreational vessel. These records not only document past care, but the real importance and value of this is that her new owners will have a very solid baseline from which to operate. It will help to eliminate what often amounts to the ‘treasure hunt’ and ‘mystery’ challenges new owners of 30+ year old vessels commonly face.

MAGIC DRAGON is currently in the water, fully commissioned, and needs only your stores to be ready for sea. Contact the listing broker to arrange a showing.

Description

Asking price reduced another $5,000. sellers are motivated and all reasonable offers are encouraged..

Vessel walkthrough.

Certified Professional Yacht Broker

Matt Howard has been an avid boater since his dad first put him behind the wheel of the family’s classic Chris Craft runabout when he was four years of age. Throughout his lifelong love affair with boating, he has owned, operated, and maintained a broad range of boats both power and sail, and running the gamut from Hobie Cats to cabin cruisers to offshore high speed performance powerboats.

After graduating from the Virginia Military Institute with a degree in Civil Engineering, Matt began his career as an active duty U.S. Marine Corps helicopter pilot; a career that took him around the country and around the globe. During his many tours of duty, including a stint flying the President as a Marine One pilot, Matt owned and operated a variety of boats in lakes, rivers, and the coastal waters of Hawaii, San Diego, CA, and Norfolk, VA. Before leaving active duty, he enrolled with the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology’s Yacht Design course, a rigorous program designed to give students the ability to design, from the ground up, sail and power boats up to 100 feet in length. Matt is also a USCG licensed Captain (50 ton Master).

Since leaving active duty, he has worked as an aviation consultant in the Washington, D.C. area, and while continuing his Westlawn curriculum, Matt has been using his infectious passion for boating and his comprehensive knowledge of boat design, construction, and operating characteristics to help friends and colleagues find the right boat to suit their lifestyle. His enthusiasm and innate talent for doing so led him to the next step – becoming a yacht broker.

Twenty years as a U.S, Marine officer and a lifetime of boating have given Matt the absolute integrity, skills, loyalty, knowledge, and heartfelt passion required of a professional yacht broker. Let Matt help you determine your needs, find the right boat for your lifestyle, and guide you through the process.

1982 CHB 42' Krogen 42 Magic Dragon | Picture 1 of 104

ASKING PRICE REDUCED ANOTHER $5,000. SELLERS ARE MOTIVATED AND ALL REASONABLE OFFERS ARE ENCOURAGED.

If you are looking at yachts for sale , thinking about selling your yacht or need service for your yacht , it is always wise to have an experienced broker from Atlantic Yacht and Ship to represent your interests.

Mid-Atlantic rescue: Magic Dragon assists ARC crew

A mid-Atlantic Mayday sends chills down the spine of ARC crew member Craig Gray

Yachts taking part in the ATC sailing into the Atlantic

ARC yachts can lose sight of the rest of the fleet within the first day, but help is usually not far away. Credit: World Cruising Club Credit: World Cruising Club

‘Craig, there’s been a Mayday , you have to get up,’ whispered nine-year-old Dorothy, almost apologetically, through the half-open door to my cabin, writes Craig Gray.

I mumbled incoherently while fumbling blearily for clothes. It was 0900.

I’d only finished my watch at 0730ish and had been asleep for about an hour, but a Mayday is a Mayday.

We were smack in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, some 10 days into my first transatlantic crossing as crew aboard Magic Dragon of Dart – a 1994-built, 55-foot Oyster owned and skippered by Rod Halling and his wife, Jane.

A child swinging on the sprayhood in the cockpit of a yacht

Jane, Lizzie and Craig look on as Peter swings on the sprayhood in the mid-Atlantic

Also aboard were Rod’s daughter from a previous marriage, Lizzie, a competent dinghy sailor, along with Dorothy, and four-year-old twins, Peter and Vera. A real family affair.

We were sailing with the 2021 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC), the so-called ‘friendly’ race from Gran Canaria to the Caribbean island of St Lucia in a fleet of some 150 yachts.

As well as unusually squally upwind sailing conditions we had the nagging concern that our watermaker had stopped working, leaving us with a little over 400 litres in the tanks to sustain us for the 10 or so days left aboard.

Major squalls

We sailed on, Magic Dragon making short work of the conditions and running beautifully at around 10-12 knots.

It was the morning of 1 December when we received Boscombe Whaler ’s* Mayday.

A minute or so after Dorothy had woken me, I staggered, half asleep, into no small chaos.

Jane was at the chart table in radio contact with Boscombe Whaler ’s skipper. The kids were running around the saloon excited at all the kerfuffle.

A yacht in silhouette anchored in the ocean

Rod was at the helm with Lizzie beside him. ‘A yacht’s lost its steering. We’re going to help. They’re about six miles away,’ said Rod.

We motored towards our target at around 6 knots.

It was only once we turned into the wind to get the sails away that I fully appreciated how strong it was.

Force 8, gusting to Force 9, and showing no signs of easing.

The 58-foot Hanse that had issued the Mayday had been bashed around with no steering all night long, attempted various fixes to repair a steering quadrant failure, and by morning the difficult decision to abandon ship had been made.

There were two other ARC yachts standing by, but neither had space for all five passengers.

After sailing as a hobby around the Solent and Isle Of Purbeck from age 19 on a friend’s dad’s Virgo Voyager, Craig Gray decided to pursue a career sailing professionally nearly five years ago. Craig jumped at the chance to crew on SV Magic Dragon for 2021’s ARC, and has been working as a skipper and freelance journalist in the West Indies since.

Craig jumped at the chance to crew on SV Magic Dragon for 2021’s ARC, and has been working as a skipper and freelance journalist in the West Indies since.

In spite of our broken watermaker, we decided it was more important to get the crew off their boat.

We decided the crew would get into their liferaft , cast themselves off, and we would pick them up in our lee.

It took around an hour to reach the stricken vessel, which gave us time to talk through the manoeuvre and rig lines and ladders on the expected side.

All the children seemed to realise the gravity of the situation. They were unusually quiet and impeccably well behaved.

Lessons learned from abandoning ship mid Atlantic

As we approached the scene, Jane once more got on the radio.

Lizzie and I sat amidships on the portside as we watched Boscombe Whaler ’s crew moving around her stern.

One man threw out the liferaft, which inflated beautifully. The yacht was lying with wind abeam due to her sea anchor .

This meant the crew jumping into the liferaft from the open transom, which, due to the swell was at times four or five metres above the water.

All we could do was watch as the first man picked his moment to leap.

Mid-Atlantic rescue

When the right gap in the waves arrived, he pushed himself off the yacht, landing perfectly in the raft.

One by one, the other four crewmembers followed, the painter was cut and Boscombe Whaler drifted away from her crew.

We all cheered, such was the release in tension, but I did wonder if it was the time or the place.

I can’t imagine how hard it must be to watch your home, pride and joy set free, unmanned, to gradually disappear over the horizon with very little hope of ever seeing her again.

Craig plays Peter’s guitar on Magic Dragon’s foredeck

Rod motored around the beleaguered yacht, keeping a fair distance using the engine.

He managed superbly as only a skipper in full control of his own boat can, and Lizzie and I prepared to pick up the crew on our starboard side.

We let them come to us, but with the swell only getting heavier, I worried that they’d be crushed underneath our hull.

Somehow Rod kept the liferaft amidships, and once it was within about 10 feet, I stood up to throw the crew a line.

It went straight through the open liferaft hatch, and into the arms of Raoul, the skipper, who heroically refused to let go until every other person was safely on board Magic Dragon.

Closing in on Boscombe Whaler

Closing in on Boscombe Whaler

Lifting the crew out of the raft was the next task.

The guardrail was open and various ladders and lines were laid over the side, but getting them safely on deck was no mean feat.

First up was Steven, who managed to grab on at the right place and we had little trouble helping him aboard.

Next was Phillip, not the smallest man in the world, and he unfortunately ended up climbing where the guardrail was highest.

Boscombe Whaler’s crew prepares to abandon into the liferaft

Boscombe Whaler ’s crew prepares to abandon into the liferaft

I grabbed his arm, and through adrenaline and sheer brute strength, dragged him into the cockpit.

Naomi, Raoul’s wife and a slight lady, was next, and after the previous exertion, I nearly threw her over the boat and back into the sea.

Charlie came up after, along with bags of food and belongings, and finally skipper Raoul, who could at last let go of the rope.

We had been in contact with another boat that was standing by, who offered to send some bottles of water over on a fender, but after a couple of failed attempts we called it off.

New crewmembers

Jane shifted into hostess mode and put the kettle on.

We turned Magic Dragon into the wind to bring her sails out, and got ourselves back on course.

The rest of the journey was entirely without incident, especially as Raoul managed to get our watermaker working.

With the extra food we ate like kings for the remainder of the journey, and with more hands on board everyone doubled up on watches.

Even morale improved, in spite of the Atlantic still giving us a good kicking.

And so late evening on 9 December 2021 Magic Dragon arrived at the marina in Rodney Bay, St Lucia, to rapturous applause and a fanfare of hundreds of foghorns and cheers.

The entire marina turned out to see us in.

As soon as the final line was set, the crew of Boscombe Whaler leapt from the deck of their rescuers and straight into the arms of their loved ones, who, although well aware of the survivors’ wellbeing, yearned to hold them close for that confirmation of their safety.

Magic Dragon’s crew collects the Spirit of the ARC award

It took another week before the majority of yachts crossed the finish line.

On the Friday night, as the ARC prize-giving ceremony drew to a close, the organiser announced: ‘The final award this year is the “Spirit of the ARC” and goes to an individual or crew that has displayed selfless commitment in helping others in the rally… Despite already having seven on board, including three children, they risked their safety to evacuate Boscombe Whaler ’s crew, and eight days later delivered them safely to the shores of St Lucia… This year’s ‘Spirit of the ARC’ goes to… Magic Dragon of Dart .’

Mid-Atlantic rescue: Lessons Learned

  • Man overboard Practice: Prior to the passage Rod and Jane had insisted we spend an afternoon refreshing all the crew on our man overboard manoeuvres. This proved critical.
  • Planning: In the hour between receiving the Mayday and arriving on the scene, we talked through the situation as a crew, discussed the several crew transfer options available to us, and also ways in which things could go wrong.
  • Communication: Once we had a set course of action, Jane spent the majority of time in constant radio contact with Boscombe Whaler ’s skipper. This meant that both crews were fully aware of what to expect.
  • Emergency rations: Water was our biggest oversight. Sounds obvious but you can never have too much of it, and you should never rely solely on your watermaker. We did have an emergency 80 litres on board, but we should have insisted that Boscombe Whaler ’s crew bring as much with them as possible.

Oyster 55, Magic Dragon, back at Fox’s Marina over 25 years after her launch

Oyster 55, Magic Dragon, back at Fox’s Marina over 25 years after her launch

The classic Oyster 55,  Magic Dragon , was recently sold to new owners via Oyster Brokerage, whose office is on site at Fox’s Marina & Boatyard.

She was originally launched and commissioned at Fox’s Marina back in the early 1990’s and was one of 38 yachts that took part in the RAF Yacht Club’s 1995-1997 Trade Winds Round the World Rally, one of the first world sailing events organised specifically for cruising yachtsmen.

With a number of Oyster yachts taking part in the rally, including  Magic Dragon , in his previous role at Oyster Yachts Fox’s MD, Will Taylor-Jones, flew out to Gibraltar and then Australia to welcome the fleet and provide technical support.

Now over 25 years later, Will was delighted to see  Magic Dragon  back at Fox’s being prepared for further adventures.

The Magic Dragon

  • By Dave Reed
  • February 18, 2022

They tried their best with the Ker 40 for a while, but getting nowhere closer to the podium, they started looking elsewhere. The action was in ORC, so that’s they looked, and their search led them to Italia’s curvy ORC slayers. What fit the bill best was the 39-foot 11.98—just under their 40-foot limit.

Andrew and Linda Weiss have always enjoyed the variety of their sailing lives. The keen husband-wife team from Hartsville, South Carolina, have campaigned a slew of boats under the Christopher Dragon banner—a J/122, a Sydney 43, and most recently, a tricked-out Ker 40 that was fun to sail but a bit of a one-trick IRC pony. And IRC ponies are unicorns in the U.S these days.

Before buying the boat, however, their longtime sailmaker, Pat Considine, head sail designer at UK Sailmakers, jokingly asked: “Do you really want to go this slow?”

Slow is relative of course and when Christopher Dragon rolled into Key West earlier this year with a win in the Key West to Lauderdale Race—less than a week after coming off a SevenStar ship from Italy—none of the crew were necessarily complaining. Except for maybe the foredeck team more used to Ker’s asymmetric spinnakers. They finished six hours ahead of their routing, so, not too bad for the boat’s first competitive showing.

“It is a simpler boat [than the Ker 40],” Weiss says. “It’s a lot like the J/122. It’s not super-fast, but it’s also not that hard to get going. After the Key West Race, everyone was surprised how well the deck layout worked and how well it sails.”

With a win in the Lauderdale Race, Weiss’s boat captain Ed Bahen, had himself a quite a worklist to get the boat out of its offshore clothing and into buoy racing dress for the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg a month later. There’s plenty to do to optimize it for a summer full of ORC racing in the Northeast.

The Weiss family maintains a deep and experienced sailing bench—friends and amateurs, regulars from more than 25 years of racing different big boats. As big-time players in the hotel and hospitality business, they also don’t have time nor a desire to fight and chase a handicap rule. “We wanted to get a boat that we’re not going to be complaining about the rating and have fun with it,” Weiss says. And he expects the Italia should give them just that. So far, so good. “Plus, Linda wasn’t happy that the old boat didn’t have a head.”

Weiss had done his research before committing to the Italia, built in Italy by Italia Yachts . “I could see that ORC was what was growing in the US and I thought that ORC is a lot further ahead in Europe, so I started looking at results for the last three years.”

The Italias, he says, always seemed to be in the top 10. The boat he really wanted was the JPK 1180 Sunrise [Rolex Fastnet Race Winner], which is “the best IRC boat in the world in the 40-foot range.” But ORC is now a thing in the States, so “the best ORC boat in the world is probably the Italia.”

Rather than wait a year or more, he found a used one in Italy and purchased it sight unseen. It came fully loaded. “The first owner bought every cruising and every racing option possible: swim platform, extra anchor sprit, the extra seat in the cockpit,” he says. From the day it arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Behan has had his hands full managing the boat’s weight-loss program.

They’ve also ramped up the boat’s horsepower. Early discussions with the boat’s designer Matteo Polli in which they compared scratch sheets from U.S. regattas to those in Europe. “The boat is meant to be just at the top of Class C in Europe,” Weiss says. “So, I asked what he would do to optimize the boat for rating speed.”

The solution, of course, was bigger spinnakers and a bigger main. The old mainsail was about a foot-and-half short of the end of the boom, and had little to no roach. “It was slowed down to be at the top of the class before,” Weiss says, “so now it will rate a little bit faster, but we’re bringing it back to where it should be.”

All the symmetric spinnaker gear that came with the boat and came in handy in the Key West Race, is coming off as well, which you can be sure is good news to Christopher Dragon ’s bow team in St. Pete, keen to simplify their lives and get around the corners quicker.

CHB

This unique and superb example of the iconic Krogen-designed 42’ trawler built by Chien Hwa Boats (CHB) comes to market as her sellers are pursuing new adventures. Over their ten years of ownership, "MAGIC DRAGON", one of only 5 of 206 total 42s built with twin engines, has benefited from constant upgrades and loving care.

At last count there were documented maintenance actions taken since . It will help to eliminate what often amounts to the ‘treasure hunt’ and ‘mystery’ challenges new owners of + year old vessels commonly face.

MAGIC DRAGON is currently in the water, fully commissioned, and needs only your stores to be ready for sea. Contact the listing broker to arrange a showing.
