Water crashes onto the deck of one of the vessels battling the elements in the Rolex Fastnet race

Dozens of yachts retire from Channel race due to ‘brutal’ gale-force winds

One crew evacuated before boat sinks as more than 80 vessels abandon world’s largest offshore race

Dozens of yachts have been forced to retire from the world’s largest offshore race due to “brutal” gale-force conditions in the Channel, with other vessels forced to seek shelter and one believed to have sunk.

Strong winds and torrential rain affected the 50th edition of the Rolex Fastnet race, which has been organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club since 1925 and takes place every two years. This year’s event set a new record of 430 yachts, surpassing the 388 that took part in 2019.

But organisers said about 86 had retired after a “brutal” first night of the 600-mile race. Competitors set off from Cowes on the Isle of Wight on Saturday heading for the finishing line in Cherbourg, north-west France, via the Fastnet Rock off Ireland.

One yacht, the Sun Fast 3600 Vari, sank off the Isle of Wight and its crew are said to be safe and well. In a statement, the Rolex Fastnet race committee said: “At approximately 16.30 yesterday afternoon the Sun Fast 3600 Vari began to take on water south-west of the Needles.

“Thanks to the swift response of the emergency services both crew members were evacuated to Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and are safe and well. The boat is believed to have sunk although the exact reasons are not yet confirmed.”

HM Coastguard reported involvement in 28 incidents, some involving injured crew. The race director, Steve Cole, told the BBC: “The strong winds last night were forecast well in advance.

“The club would like to thank HM Coastguard and the RNLI for their assistance. It is thanks to their effort and skill that the incidents were dealt with professionally and those who required assistance were recovered safely.

“Now the front has passed, the wind and sea state have dropped, and conditions are even set to be light over the next 24 hours.”

The race’s official blog reported that the crew on Stuart Lawrence’s J/120 Scream II reported wind speeds of 46 knots on Saturday evening.

Poole lifeboat station said it had attended yachts encountering problems on Saturday evening in “lively” conditions during “relentless heavy rain”.

An RNLI volunteer helm, Jonathan Clark, said: “With the challenging conditions out there tonight, RNLI lifeboats from Yarmouth, Swanage and Weymouth are being kept very busy helping to keep people safe and there are a lot of vessels in Poole tonight seeking safe haven.”

Boats of all ages, shapes and sizes participate in the historic race, which attracts amateurs and professionals.

Caro wins Fastnet, yacht sinks and four dismasted in treacherous race

It was a fast and furious start to the 50th Rolex Fastnet Race with four dismastings and one yacht sinking in the winds of 40 knots

The 52ft Swiss entry Caro, skippered by Max Klink wins the 50th Rolex Fastnet Race

Caro , a Botin 52 owned and skippered by Max Klink, is the overall winner of the 50th Rolex Fastnet in a punishing race that saw one yacht sink and four yachts dismasted in gale-force winds, with close to 90 yachts pulling out in the first 24 hours.

Four-metre waves, and gale-force winds gusting up to 43 knots hit the fleet shortly after the start from Cowes on Saturday as a record 443 yachts headed off on the famous 695-mile yacht race round the Fastnet Rock off the south coast of Ireland and across the Celtic Sea to Cherbourg, France.

HM Coastguard reported that they had responded to 28 incidents involving yachts participating in the Fastnet Race in the first few hours, with a search and rescue helicopter and RNLI crews from Yarmouth, Poole, Swanage and Weymouth responding to multiple incidents.

The most serious incident was the sinking of the Sunfast 3600 Vari in the western Solent. Only 20 minutes elapsed between the crew of Vari raising the alarm that they were taking on water and the yacht sinking. The two French crew were recovered from their life raft by an RNLI lifeboat at Yarmouth and taken ashore to hospital. They are both safe and well and now back in France.

Golden Globe Race skipper Tabio Lehtinen was dismasted on his Swan 55 Galiana , which is due to compete in the Ocean Globe Race, a retro edition of the historic Whitbread race, in September. Sun Fast 3200 Mirabelle was also dismasted as was Royal Naval Sailing Association’s Sun Fast 3600 Yoyo and Sun Fast 2600 Diablo

Oida ran around off Beaulieu after the anchor dragged and CF520 Oystercatcher XXXV suffered deck failure. There were several MOB/EPIRB distress alerts as devices got covered by water, proving to be false alarms.

The winner Caro also did not escape unscathed. ‘The first 12 hours we were just in survival mode, trying not to break anything, trying to keep the boat at 100 percent,’ said the Swiss owner. ‘I wasn’t thinking about any title or trophy, it was just about getting through the conditions.’

‘At one point we just had everyone in the cockpit, no one was hiking. And keeping the boat speed to no more than six knots and trying to just get through this really bad sea state.’

Caro also sailed largely without instruments after damage to the top of the mast. Tactician Adrian Stead, twice a winner of the Fastnet, added: ‘We lost the wand off the top of the mast in the Portland tidal race and we lost all our wind instruments, so we were running blind.’

‘We pretty much straight lined it all the way (back from the Scilly Isles) and we realised we had a very good shot at winning IRC Zero so pulled out all the stops, got out some extra chocolate bars and had everyone hiking hard on the rail for the last few hours into the finish.’

Caro completed the course in 2 days, 16 hours and 40 minutes, two hours ahead of nearest rival Team Jajo on corrected time, although this may change as there ere are several yachts yet to complete the race.

Multihull line honours went to SVR Lazartigue under skipper François Gabart with a new record of 1 day, 8 hours, 38 minutes, beating the exiting multihull record by 30 minutes and reaching the finish line an hour before rival Banque Populaire under skipper Armel le Cléac’h.

The new IMOCA 60 Macif , skippered by Charlie Dalin, was the first monohull home, taking line honours in an incredibly close race between the giant IMOCAs.

Macif beat Paprec Arkea , skippered by Yoann Richomme by only four minutes and Sam Goodchild, the skipper of For The Planet was only 13 minutes behind them.

Macif set a new monohull course record of 2 days, 7 hours and 16 minutes, shaving over an hour from the time set by Skorpios , a ClubSwan 125, in 2021 when the race first sailed this new course.

RORC Racing Manager Steve Cole said the committee had considered postponing the race but that there was another low pressure system developing to the west of Ireland and in a seven-day race for some yachts it is difficult to avoid bad weather.

‘The feeling was that, although it’s better not to have bad weather at all, if you have to have it, better along the English coast where there are places to shelter than, in the Celtic Sea,’ he told Yachting Monthly.

‘Undoubtedly the forecast would have put some people off, but our rules are flexible enough to allow people to take shelter and then resume racing later. A lot of people did that and good for them for taking the right decision at the time,’ Cole added.

‘We put the races on and hopefully people are well prepared and well informed and the ones that get through it are the ones that deserve to finish.’

Yarmouth RNLI Coxswain, Howard Lester said: ‘This weekend’s Fastnet race was the busiest one for Yarmouth lifeboat, responding to six incidents in some very challenging conditions in the western Solent and beyond.

‘We were very fortunate that all our call outs were to crews with means of calling for help and were equipped with either lifejackets or had life rafts accessible onboard.’

$51 Million Superyacht Sinks Tanker in Bahamas

' src=

A 207-foot superyacht hit the stern of a 160-foot gas tanker in the Bahamas on Christmas Eve and sank it in 2,000 feet of water.

The $51million yacht, Utopia IV , built by the Italian yard Rossinavi in 2018 with an aluminum hull, collided with the Tropic Breeze tanker about 15 miles north/northwest of New Providence Island. A nearby yacht rescued the seven crew on board the tanker before it sank. The Utopia IV suffered damage to the starboard side of its bow and was escorted to the Prince George Wharf by the Harbor Patrol.

Maritime Management LLC, which owns the Tropic Breeze , issued a statement saying the tanker was “rear-ended by a 207-foot superyacht” and that it was “traveling on its proper watch when it was rear-ended.” The accident occurred just after 10 p.m.

The statement said “the catastrophic force of the collision pierced the stern of the tanker, causing the tanker to sink to the ocean floor at 2,000 feet.”

The Tropic Breeze , built in 1989, left New Providence Island on Dec. 24, bound for Great Stirrup Cay in the Berry Islands. Maritime Management said its cargo consisted of “non-persistent materials, LPG, marine gas and automotive gas,” and was “lighter than water and will evaporate if exposed to surface air.”

It was not known if Utopia IV was under charter at the time of the accident, or how many people were on board the yacht. It is owned by JR Ridinger, who is the CEO of Market America, a direct-sales organization, and shop.com. He and his wife, Loren, live in Miami Beach.

The Utopia IV was listed for sale last June. It can carry 12 guests and 13 crew. It’s powered by four Rolls Royce engines and four hydro jets, producing a top speed of 33 knots. The interior is lavish, outfitted by Hermes and Armani.

Bahamian authorities are investigating. Read more:

Dubois half tonner Alchemist sinks during Round the Island – video

RNLI action-cam video of the Dubois half tonner Alchemist sinking rapidly east of the Needles iduring this year's Round the Island Race

yacht vari sinks

The Mudeford RNLI inshore lifeboat crew shot dramatic footage of the sinking of Alchemist during last Saturday’s JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.

Alchemist , a 1977 Dubois-designed Half Tonner, was built in Cowes at the Lallows boatyard for lifetime owner Mark Wynter, who is Commodore of the Island Sailing Club, the organising club of the Round the Island Race. Wynter was not onboard during this year’s race, which saw two crew rescued from Alchemist as she sank rapidly in around 17 metres of water just east of the Needles in strong winds on 2 July.

It has been widely reported that Alchemist hit the wreck of the SS Varvassi , an infamous obstacle of the course created when a Greek cargo steamer ran aground in 1947. Despite attempts by the inshore lifeboat crew to pass a pump to the crew onboard Alchemist, and to attach a stern towline, the beautifully varnished wooden yacht was taking on water rapidly and sank in Scratchells Bay. Both crew were rescued safely by the RNLI RIB, and an RNLI crewman was recovered from the water immediately after.

Besides competing in almost every Round the Island Race since her launch, Alchemist was a familiar sight on the Solent for nearly 30 years, and a frequent competitor in the JOG (Junior Offshore Group) races across the Channel. Many key figures in Cowes sailing community enjoyed their first taste of yacht and offshore racing onboard the Half Tonner. Yacht designer John Corby posted via social media “Seeing it under construction at Lallows when I was about 15 was one of the things that made me want to build boats.”

Both the RNLI and independent lifeboats were also called to multiple incidents during the day, including a dismasting, rudder and steering failures, and an injured crew member who was transferred to land after two boats collided.

I work in the boat yard next to the vanquish delivery facility and I know exactly what happened as I was able to speak directly with the crew member who was on board?: One of the crew members had a bad stomach and had to use the head but the head had not been prepared for you use or tested and was actually marked. Do not use but because he had multiple instances of diarrhea he removed the lockout and tag out and use the head and then try to use the sea water flush. And when he opened the valve, what he didn't realize was that it wasn't connected to the back of the head and I'm not sure the mechanics of it. But there's another hose that started causing a siphoning effect and even when he closed the head valve that he'd opened, water kept pouring in and I'm not sure if it was from the head itself or from a hose behind it. But it had to do with the fact that the head had been marked and tagged not to use and this guy with a bad stomach who knows had a bad burrito or something. Anyway, he still works there but he sank a boat.

In this article, well explore the scope of the problem, the causes of yacht sinking, who is most at risk, and the impact of yacht sinking.

Plus, well provide safety tips for yacht owners and what the data says about how many yachts sink each year.

So, if youre an avid yacht owner or just curious about this topic, read on to find out more.

Table of Contents

Short Answer

It is difficult to estimate exactly how many yachts sink each year, as many incidents go unreported.

However, the US Coast Guard estimates that there are roughly 500-700 recreational boating accidents resulting in sinking each year in the US alone.

Additionally, it is estimated that between 5-10% of all recreational boats are lost each year due to sinking or other causes.

The Scope of the Problem

The exact number of yachts that sink each year is unknown, but it is estimated that hundreds of vessels are lost annually due to a variety of causes.

Most of these losses are of smaller vessels, with the majority of accidents occurring at night and in areas with little to no navigation assistance.

While the causes of these accidents can range from mechanical problems to storms, collisions are the leading cause of yacht sinkings.

These accidents can have serious consequences, including the loss of lives and damage to the environment.

This is why it is important for all yacht owners to ensure their vessels are properly maintained and equipped for safe navigation.

This includes having the proper safety equipment, such as life jackets, flares, and radios, as well as up-to-date navigational charts and a well-trained crew.

In addition to the loss of life, the financial implications of these accidents can be significant.

Depending on the size of the vessel, the cost of a sinking can range from thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands or even millions.

Damage to the environment can also be costly, as it can take years to clean up the oil and debris from a sunken yacht.

In order to reduce the number of yachts that sink each year, it is important for yacht owners to practice safe sailing techniques and take all necessary safety precautions.

Additionally, yacht owners should regularly inspect their vessels and have them serviced by a qualified professional when needed.

By taking these steps, yacht owners can help ensure their vessels are safe and reduce the number of vessels that sink each year.

Causes of Yacht Sinking

yacht vari sinks

When it comes to the causes of yacht sinking, there are many factors that can contribute to the loss of a vessel.

The most common causes include collisions with other vessels, severe storms, and mechanical problems.

Collisions can occur between two vessels or with a larger floating object, such as a buoy or pier, and can cause significant damage to the yacht.

Severe storms can create large waves and powerful winds that can easily overwhelm a yacht, while mechanical problems can include engine failure, faulty equipment, or poor maintenance.

Additionally, many of these accidents occur at night or in areas with limited navigation assistance, which can make it difficult for captains to safely navigate their vessels.

As a result, it is important for all yacht owners to ensure their vessels are properly maintained and equipped for safe navigation.

Who Is Most At Risk

When it comes to yacht losses, certain types of vessels are more at risk than others.

Smaller yachts and sailboats are particularly vulnerable, as they dont have the same levels of safety equipment and stability that larger vessels have.

Additionally, recreational boaters are more likely to experience an accident due to their lack of experience and knowledge of the sea.

Finally, yachts and sailboats that are not properly maintained or equipped with the latest safety equipment are also more likely to experience an accident.

All of these factors can contribute to the hundreds of yachts that sink each year.

In terms of geography, yachts that navigate in areas with limited navigation assistance (such as in remote parts of the ocean) are more likely to experience an accident.

Additionally, yachts that sail at night or in bad weather are also more likely to sink.

Finally, areas with higher boat traffic are also more likely to experience a yacht sinking, as the risk of a collision is greater.

It is important for all yacht owners to be aware of the risks and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of their vessel.

This includes having the latest navigation equipment and safety equipment onboard, as well as conducting regular maintenance and inspections.

Additionally, boat owners should also be aware of the potential dangers of sailing in certain areas and take the appropriate precautions.

By following these simple steps, yacht owners can reduce the chances of their vessel sinking and help ensure the safety of everyone onboard.

The Impact of Yacht Sinking

yacht vari sinks

The loss of any yacht, whether large or small, can have serious consequences.

Unfortunately, yacht sinking is not a rare occurrence – it is estimated that hundreds of vessels are lost each year due to various causes.

This can lead to devastating losses of lives, extensive damage to the environment, and costly financial losses.

When a yacht sinks, it can cause extensive damage to the marine environment.

This is because the sinking vessel often releases hazardous materials such as fuel, oil, and other hazardous substances into the water.

This can cause extensive damage to the local marine life, as well as disrupt the normal flow of the ocean.

Additionally, sinking yachts can also cause damage to nearby ships and vessels, as well as any nearby docks or ports.

The loss of a yacht can also be financially devastating.

Yachts are expensive pieces of property and their loss can cause a significant financial loss to their owners.

In addition, the cost of the vessel’s insurance policy, as well as any associated legal fees, can also be costly.

Finally, the loss of a yacht can have serious emotional consequences.

The loss of a beloved vessel can be devastating for its owners, who may have spent years and considerable money investing in their yacht.

Additionally, any loss of life associated with a yacht sinking can be devastating for the families and friends of those lost.

In conclusion, yacht sinking is a very serious issue, and one that can have serious consequences.

Additionally, yacht owners should always be aware of the potential risks associated with sailing, and take the necessary precautions to minimize the risk of sinking.

How to Reduce the Risk of Sinking

Yacht owners should take steps to reduce the risk of their vessels sinking.

This includes using the proper safety equipment and performing regular maintenance on the vessel.

Additionally, yacht owners should ensure they have the necessary navigation skills and knowledge to navigate safely.

It is also important to make sure the yacht is equipped with life-saving devices such as life jackets, flares, and a life raft.

The United States Coast Guard recommends that all vessels have a minimum of three life jackets and a personal flotation device for each person aboard.

Additionally, flares should be stored in a waterproof container that can be easily accessed and used in case of an emergency.

Yacht owners should also review and adhere to all local, state, and federal navigation regulations.

These regulations can vary by region and may include areas such as speed limits, navigation channels, and restricted areas.

Additionally, yacht owners should be familiar with basic navigation techniques such as chart reading and piloting.

Finally, yacht owners should be aware of the weather conditions in their area and plan their voyages accordingly.

They should check weather forecasts before setting out and be prepared to make changes or even cancel their trip if the conditions are not favorable.

Additionally, yacht owners should be aware of the dangers of storms and take necessary precautions to stay safe.

Safety Tips for Yacht Owners

yacht vari sinks

Yacht owners must take safety seriously, as even the most well-maintained vessel can become a casualty of the sea.

Yacht owners should heed the following safety tips to help minimize the chances of their vessel sinking: Ensure your yacht is equipped with the latest navigation tools and instruments, such as a radar, GPS, and chartplotter.

These should be regularly maintained and calibrated to ensure accurate readings.

Make sure your yacht is equipped with the appropriate number of life jackets and emergency equipment, such as flares, fire extinguishers, and a first aid kit.

Always monitor the weather conditions and plan your voyage accordingly.

Be aware of any storms that may be in the area and avoid sailing in rough waters.

Have a proper check-in procedure with the local Coast Guard or harbor master before departing.

Have a designated lookout and designate a person to be in charge of navigation at all times.

Make sure your yacht is properly maintained and serviced.

Have a professional inspect it regularly and replace any worn or damaged parts.

Make sure your yacht is insured, as this can help in the event of a major accident or loss.

Be mindful of marine traffic and be aware of the navigation rules for the area.

Be aware of the risk of collisions, particularly in crowded areas or at night.

By following these safety tips, yacht owners can help to ensure the safety of themselves and their vessels.

Additionally, it is important for all yacht owners to remain aware of the number of yachts that sink each year and to take the necessary precautions to prevent such occurrences.

What the Data Says

When it comes to understanding just how many yachts sink each year, it can be difficult to get an exact number due to the lack of reporting.

However, data suggests that hundreds of vessels are lost each year due to various causes.

The most common reasons for these losses are collisions, storms, and mechanical problems.

The majority of yacht losses occur in smaller vessels, with most losses occurring at night and in areas with little to no navigation assistance.

This is because these areas are more difficult to navigate and often have hidden hazards that can be difficult to spot.

Additionally, smaller vessels are more vulnerable to storms and collisions, making them more likely to sink.

This is why it is so important for all yacht owners to ensure their vessels are properly maintained and equipped for safe navigation.

By taking the necessary precautions, yacht owners can help minimize the number of yachts lost each year.

In addition to taking the necessary precautions, it is also important for yacht owners to stay informed about the latest developments in yacht safety.

This includes keeping up with the latest regulations and safety protocols, as well as staying informed about the latest technological advances that could help improve the safety of their vessels.

By following these simple steps, yacht owners can help reduce the number of yachts lost each year and ensure that their vessels remain safe and seaworthy.

Final Thoughts

Yacht sinking is a serious problem that affects hundreds of vessels each year.

It can cause devastating damage to property, the environment, and even human lives.

As such, it’s important for all yacht owners to be aware of the risks and take action to reduce them.

This means remaining vigilant while out on the water, taking steps to ensure their yacht is properly maintained, and equipping their vessels with the necessary safety gear.

By following these safety tips, yacht owners can help to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

Sunken but not stirred.

Footage captured the calamitous moment that a massive superyacht named “007” sank — with five passengers inside — in Greece

The maritime disaster occurred Friday night after the 160-foot vessel, which reportedly sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman, experienced a GPS malfunction off Kythos Island, SWNS reported. This reportedly prompted the captain to bring it closer to shore than was advisable.

As a result, the James Bond-themed luxury boat hit the rocks, and began taking on water with five passengers inside.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that’s how the ship got to that position,” explained a boat owner who witnessed the catastrophe.

Accompanying footage, uploaded to YouTube, shows the swanky vessel, which sports a helipad, lying half-sunken on its side around 50 feet from the nearby Kolona Beach.

The pleasure cruiser hit the rocks off Kythos Island, Greece at around 11pm on Friday.

Thankfully, all five passengers were rescued and transported to safety before the “007” sank. “No people were hurt,” described the aforementioned eyewitness. “The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night.”

Rescuers also erected an anti-pollution perimeter in the area, although there was reportedly “no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery,” the bystander said.

The luxury vessel boasted a helipad, five cabins including a master suite, and other features befitting its James Bond namesake.

Local authorities will launch a probe into the sinking of the “007,” which was delivered in 2006 by the Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht, but whose owner remains unknown.

Along with a helipad, the superyacht reportedly boasts five cabins, including a master suite, and can reportedly sleep ten people.

This isn’t the first time a luxury vessel has visited Davy Jones’ locker of late. Last month, heart-pounding footage emerged of a 130-foot superyacht capsizing and sinking stern-first into the water off the Italian coast.

In February, a Ukrainian man was arrested for partially sinking his Russian tycoon boss’s $7.7 million luxury super yacht in Spain in protest over the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A rubber dinghy carrying migrants sank off Turkey’s northern Aegean coast on Friday, killing at least 22 people, officials said.

Turkish coast guard personnel rescued two migrants from the sea off the town of Eceabat in Canakkale province, while two others reached the shore by themselves and notified officials, Gov. Ilhami Aktas said.

It was not clear how many people were on the boat when it sank and the coast guard was continuing to search the area, he said.

Aktas told the state-run Anadolu Agency that seven of the dead were infants or children.

The migrants’ nationalities were not immediately known.

They were trying to reach the Greek island of Samothraki, the private Demiroren News Agency reported.

Eighteen rescue boats, a plane, two helicopters and a drone were involved in the search and rescue mission, the statement said. Ambulances were on standby at a nearby port, Anadolu reported.

Although their numbers have declined in recent years, migrants mostly from the Middle East and Africa often leave Turkey to try to reach Greece or Italy in search of a better life in European countries.

The Turkish coast guard said it caught at least 93 migrants attempting to leave the Turkish coast on boats this week.

Migrant boat sinks off Turkish Aegean coast, killing at least 22 people

Turkish officials say they have found the bodies of 22 people, including seven children, off Gokceada island.

At least 22 people, including several children, have died after the rubber dinghy they were travelling on capsized off the Turkish island of Gokceada in the Aegean Sea.

“The Turkish coastguard found the bodies of 22 people including seven children,” the local governor’s office said in a statement on Friday.

Governor Ilhami Aktas told the state-run Anadolu Agency that the Turkish coastguard rescued two people from the sea off the town of Eceabat in Canakkale province, while two others were able to reach the shore by themselves,

Turkish officials said the boat began sinking overnight and that many ambulances were standing by at the port of Kabatepe near Gokceada. The search-and-rescue operation was also backed by one plane, two helicopters, one drone, 18 boats and 502 personnel.

The Turkish coastguard also said that it had rescued or intercepted several hundred people, including children, attempting to cross to Greece since the start of the week.

At least 3,129 deaths and disappearances have been recorded in the Mediterranean since 2017, making it the deadliest route for migrants and refugees, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Many migrants try to reach the Greek islands from Turkey’s western coasts to head to prosperous European Union countries, with many dying in the perilous sea crossing.

The issue of irregular migration is a thorn in relations between NATO members Turkey and Greece, who are already embroiled in longstanding disputes from exploratory drilling rights in the eastern Mediterranean to the divided island of Cyprus.

Greece has also frequently accused Turkey of waving migrants through their joint border and at sea.

Ankara in turn has accused Athens of illegal pushbacks of migrant boats. In 2016, Turkey struck a deal with the EU to curb the influx of people seeking refuge in the EU in return for financial assistance and other incentives.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Athens in December, Turkey and Greece agreed to open a new page in their troubled relations and address their problems including irregular migration through dialogue.

The issue of irregular migration is likely to figure highly in talks when Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visits Ankara in May.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
