FINEST CARBON MASTS

A mast is one of the most dynamic and complex components of a yacht, with the job of transferring the power generated by the wind and sails into the yacht. It must withstand a multitude of ever-changing forces, including torsion, bend and compression. Yet it must maintain the perfect combination of stiffness and flexibility to maximize performance of the sail plan.

At Southern Spars we are spurred on by two key drivers; performance and reliability. The foundations of our success in these areas are sound principles of design and manufacture, combined with a detailed understanding of our customers’ requirements.

At Southern Spars, we build packages for everything from mega yachts, to race yachts and Olympic dinghies. Developments made in one area are disseminated through all of our teams, meaning the rate of progression throughout the company is extremely high.

WE BUILD MASTS FOR…

Grand prix / racing, classic cruiser.

aglaia superyacht mast by southern spars

Phenomenal strength is needed in the mast and  rigging  to support a superyacht’s immense sail plan. The yacht’s dimensions must be balanced with the mast and boom for both aesthetics and engineering capabilities. Modern superyacht spars have added functionality like furling mainsails, and rafts of electronic, navigation and communications components.

As superyacht owners seek ever-larger and more performance-oriented yachts,  designs  draw extensively on developments made in the Grand Prix arena. Southern Spars’  ECsix continuous carbon fibre rigging  is now used in most superyacht projects.  Thin ply carbon fibre  for mast construction is also beginning to cross over the race/luxury boundary.

The many international design awards won by superyachts carrying Southern Spars’ packages highlights the vital role that our team plays in creating world-leading superyachts.

vo65 - southern spars performance masts

With almost universal domination of the world’s elite inshore, offshore and around the world events; Southern Spars’ race results speak for themselves.

Our dedication to performance and  reliability  makes us the obvious choice for racing yachts that want the edge over their competitors with a product that they can trust. Throughout the  design process , we integrate the sail maker’s design into our own so that the spars and sails work as one cohesive unit. This enables racers to extract maximum performance and trust that the mast will get them across the finish line.

Southern Spars rigs are made from  thin ply carbon fibre , which allows us to  design  tubes lighter and stronger than our competition, while achieving a more accurate bend profile.

ac50 - southern spars masts

The spirit of multihull yachts is generally more radical, not conforming to the limits imposed on monohulls. Catamarans and trimarans often seek something different and more exciting – a spirit embraced by Southern Spars.

Multihulls allow many different rig and  rigging  configurations, which allows Southern Spars to  design  innovative and often unique solutions to aid the yacht’s performance.

We work together with the yacht’s designer and sailmaker to ensure the whole yacht works together to embody the essence of multihull sailing – the perfect combination of comfort, space and effortless speed.

Southern Spars’  carbon technology  allows us to build more than just masts. We produce many of the carbon components in a multihull including the crossbeams, spine, and bowsprit for everything from foiling AC72s to multihull superyachts.

j class southern spars rig

One of the best ways to bring new life to an older vessel is to upgrade the spar package. Doing so will significantly increase its performance, safety and  ease of operation  making sailing more enjoyable and therefore done more often.

Classic yachts are great to look at, but can be difficult to sail. Upgrading to a carbon mast from Southern Spars will make an older yacht sail like new one, with a more efficient sail plan and improved righting moment. Southern Spars’ attention to detail, from  design  through  manufacture  to paint and final fit out mean that all of this can be done without compromising any of the cosmetic attributes or traditional feel of your yacht.

Southern Spars have built new carbon fibre masts for single, double and triple masted classic yachts, cutting significant amounts of weight and  improving the reliability  of a rig package.

From the deck up.

We are addicted to sailing and probably the nerdiest crew you have ever met. Your passion is our work and our mission is to make your sailing more enjoyable, whatever it takes. Enjoy our site and welcome on board!

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

In our search for perfection, no detail is considered too small. This applies to everything, from the choice of materials to stringent testing of the finished product. Seldén’s business philosophy can be summed up as quality thinking and system thinking, and a continuous quest to achieve the best possible function for each product.

OUR HERITAGE

Manufacturing of masts is the foundation of Seldén and what has brought us to where we are today. Adapting to new technologies has always come natural to us and since the start in the 60’s we have gone from wooden masts to anodized aluminium and further on through generations of different mast ranges. Today we are the dominating manufacturer of complete sail handling systems and deck hardware for dinghies, keelboats and yachts up to 80’

RECENT LAUNCHES

Our product development never stops and we have recently launched products we really want you to check out.

ALUMINIUM MASTS

ALUMINIUM MASTS

ALL OUR STANDARD RIGS ARE CUSTOM MADE

Extruded aluminium is an excellent material for making masts. This is where Seldén has earned its reputation as world leader in mast making. Today Seldén offers a full range of masts in both aluminium and carbon fiber. All rigs are custom-made, through every calculation and detail, for each individual boat. We know how much depends on the rig, and there is no room for compromise.

CARBON MASTS

CARBON MASTS

Carbon composite combines stiffness and strength with low weight. Seldén low-weight carbon spars have accentuated longitudinal and lateral stiffness for more precise rig tuning. All experienced racing sailors know what this means in terms of increased upwind performance and boat speed.

yacht mast manufacturers

Furlex is by far the best selling jib furling system in the world. Since its launch 1983, over 200 000 systems have been delivered. In fact, Furlex is now globally synonymous with headsail furling systems. Furlex provides safe and carefree sailing. It is delivered as a complete kit by local professionals, mainly sailmakers and riggers, to supply and install. Over the years we have developed the design to optimize the furling experience and the manually operated Furlex, the S-series, is now in its 4th generation.

DECK HARDWARE

DECK HARDWARE

The Seldén deck hard ware range is carefully designed, developed and manufactured under the strict quality control and attention to detail that is the hallmark of Seldén. All Seldén deck hardware is supplied with a 2-year warranty.

Since 1960, Seldén has worked tirelessly to ensure the extensive experience and passion for sailing is engrained in every design and component that goes to make the masts, standing and running rigging that has led Seldén to be the world’s leading rig system manufacturer. The Seldén Deck hardware range continues this ethos and has been created to provide the perfect combination of reliability, functionality and elegance that allows sailors to focus on sail handling and tuning. Developed through work with boats yards, sailmakers and yacht designers worldwide, the designs have encapsulated Seldén’s drive to produce a product for any situation. It reflects our passion, all the way from the drawing board.

DOWNWIND FURLERS

DOWNWIND FURLERS

The power and acceleration achieved when unfurling a Code 0 or an asymmetric spinnaker is spectacular.

– It will make your sailing more fun.

Simply hoist the furled sail, release the furling line, pull on the sheet and you have added horse power to your sailing and given your crew a positive sailing experience. To douse the sail, ease the sheet, pull the continuous furling line and secure it in the purpose made Twin Cam block. Once the sail is furled it can be neatly dropped and coiled into a bag or left hoisted for later use. Seldén provide all necessary accessories for safe and carefree furling of “off-the-wind” sails.

Our dedicated team can cover all your marine and architectural rigging requirements. Our latest addition to the workshop is a plasma cutting machine.

yacht mast manufacturers

ROLLY TASKER SPAR MAKING

We offer complete custom built rigs for both mono and multihulls in the 20’ to 80’ range LOA. In addition we supply spinnaker poles, catamaran forebeams, bowsprits, spreaders, mast raising systems, etc., customized to your requirements. These can be for new yachts or replacement needs, including insurance purposes.

SPAR  SECTIONS

Rolly Tasker spar sections are top of the range marine grade 6061-76, aluminium alloy extrusions, featuring thick walls. They may be a fraction heavier than their industrially made counterparts, but the benefits of having a much stronger spar, not to mention a much longer life span when considering long term corrosion more than compensate for this. Click here to see our Rolly Tasker Mast Sections (.PDF)

MAST  COMPONENTS

Using high quality raw materials, we design and fabricate in house the majority of our mast fittings. Unlike the industrially machined spars our sections don’t have large gaping holes weakening them. We don’t use through bars to attach the spreaders to the mast, considerably weakening it, we fit external or internal stainless steel tangs for this reason, plus they are easier to check and maintain.

ROLLY TASKER RIGGING

Standing  rigging.

We carry a large inventory of high quality 316 stainless steel wires. We have the facility to roll swage from 2.00mm to 22.00mm diameter wires. We offer a large selection of end fittings, including Navtec, Ronstan, Norseman etc.. In addition we have a selected range of budget swage rigging turnbuckles and end fittings. Apart from yacht rigging we carry out a wide range of architectural rigging work, both for indoor and outdoor applications.

RUNNING  RIGGING

Our skilled staff carry out many different kinds of running rigging work, including splicing, eyes, wire to rope splicing, chain to rope work, rope loops, extensions, reductions, lazy jack systems, to name but a few. We use mainly our high tech PNP ropes manufactured here on site and also foreign imported ones from other rope manufacturers. We stock a substantial range of shackles and snap shackles from such suppliers as Tylaska, Ronstan and Harken to name but a few. We house a separate section for hand finished leather work on boat wheels, chafing patches, etc.

ROLLY TASKER RIG AND SAILS PACKAGE

When ordering your new sails from Rolly Tasker, at the same time you should consider your mast and rigging requirements. We are a leading company in this field: offering the complete package of sails, mast and rigging, deck hardware and all sailing accessories. This unique service is designed to give you complete peace of mind: a one stop shop to cover your complete project and because we are able to supply all the components which make this up, error in ordering the wrong items is reduced to a minimum and your rig and sails will fit perfectly together.

ROLLY TASKER CHANDLERY

Rolly Tasker Sails is the distributor for Harken, Ronstan and Tylaska in Thailand, to name but a few. We offer their complete range of products, which as well as the run of the mill items, includes roller furling units and blocks, winches etc. A full range of the products on offer can be found in our chandlery or by looking at their respective websites.

sailboat-mast

A sailboat mast is a roughly cylindrical, vertical spar which supports the vessel's sails.

Most of these masts are made of aluminum, with standard sections. Most racing sailboats use fractional rigs, in which the headsail reaches 7/8ths or 9/10ths of the way up the mast, which is thinner at the top. Carbon masts reduce weight aloft, increasing vessel stability and stiffening the sails under load. Some masts are equipped with spreaders to tension the shrouds and absorb some of the mast flex.

In the case of a production boat, choice will depend on make and model. For a one-off without a designer's sail plan, the characteristics of the mast step, the vessel's length and displacement, the presence or absence of backstays and/or running backstays and the number and location of chainplates will be determinant. If the mast is stepped on deck instead of on the keel, a photo of the step should prove useful to the mast manufacturer. Those who race often should consider a carbon mast for improved performance.

Nordic Carbon Masts (UK Agent)

Nordic Mast

With more than 25 years of experience in mast and rig building, Nordic Mast were among the pioneers when carbon fibres entered the yachting industry. Since then they have produced one of the biggest series of carbon fibre masts for X-Yachts, in excess of 130 masts, for the successful IMX 40 and IMX 45.

Since 1989, Nordic Mast have been building masts in carbon fibre for yachts ranging from 30 to 95 ft. Nordic Mast is now capable of building masts for yachts of up to approximately 125 ft.

Production of carbon fibre masts has become Nordic Masts speciality, attaching great importance to detail and customer requirements. The integrated components of these masts are all made of carbon fibre, providing optimal strength, weight, and corrosion resistance. Nordic Mast manufacture the mast profile using a ”Female Mould Autoclave” with a pressure of up to 6 Bar. This produces the best finish on the hardened mast profile, with the reinforcements as required inside the mast. The benefits of a carbon fibre mast are manifold; in addition to the balance between strength and weight, the life of a carbon fibre mast is basically infinite. This overcomes the traditional problems of aluminium masts in terms of oxidation and metal fatigue, which will not occur with carbon fibre. Other benefits include:

  • A higher mast, a larger sail area with the same keel developing more power.
  • A stiffer mast for better lateral stability, higher forestay tensions, higher speed.
  • Recovery of mast curvature, particularly in higher wind forces.
  • Reduced mast weight may reduce the keel weight of your boat by a factor of 10, making the boat more easily driven with a reduced draft.
  • Less heeling with a lighter mast and rigging.
  • A lighter and stiffer mast that will not pump.

As UK agents for Nordic Masts, The Rig Shop combine our expertise in all areas of masts and rigging to ensure that every element of the project is carefully considered, and nothing is overlooked. We place a great deal of importance on offering a complete package, bringing together all the elements of the mast, rigging, deck fittings and even sail inventory to ensure that we offer a total service.

Latest Project

The Rig Shop have just completed a full mast and rigging package on a Grainger 48 Catamaran. The owner chose a Nordic Carbon mast with a Rig Shop standing and running rigging package. This project brought together every element of The Rig Shop, including the design and manufacture of a number of custom fittings as well as a range of composite cables. The standing and running rigging elements were added in Southampton before shipping the mast to Liverpool, where it was dressed and stepped successfully for the owner.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

yacht mast manufacturers

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
