Luxury Island Launches $500 Billion Saudi Arabia Megaproject
Saudi Arabia's ambitions Neom megaproject has passed a significant milestone with the first project within the site opening on Sunday.
First announced by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman , who also chairs the Neom board of directors, in December 2022, the "luxury island destination" Sindalah has now welcomed its first wave of guests.
The project is part of the Middle Eastern nation's Neom megaproject—a 10,200 square mile area that has been turned into the world's biggest construction site . The urban living venture was launched in 2017 by the crown prince as part of the country's attempt to diversify its economy away from oil exports.
The island is located in the Red Sea, about three miles off the Neom coastline in the northwest of the country.
Sindalah is expected to eventually welcome 2,400 guests per day, generating around 3,500 jobs in the process.
The island's village and promenade will feature 38 restaurants, daytime eateries, late-night venues, and 36 luxury retail outlets.
It will also include a par-70 beachfront golf club with 18 teeing points and two nine-hole courses.
In terms of accommodation, guests will be able to choose from 440 rooms, 88 villas, and 218 apartments.
"Neom is committed to supporting the Kingdom's new era of luxury tourism, with the opening of Sindalah," said Neom CEO Nadhmi Al-Nasr.
"The realization of this landmark destination, the gateway to the Red Sea, is due to the visionary leadership of His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman and Saudi Vision 2030.
"This is a proud chapter in the NEOM story and we are excited to achieve more of our ambitious goals, with the continued support of His Royal Highness.
"Neom's inaugural destination offers visitors a 'first glimpse' of what the future holds for our extensive portfolio of destinations and developments," Al-Nasr added.
Newsweek has contacted Neom for comment via email.
A spokesperson for the Neom project previously said the megacity is using 20 percent of the world's steel in its construction.
At a logistics conference in Riyadh on the weekend of October 13, Manar Al Moneef, Neom's chief investment officer said "Neom is going to be the largest customer [in logistics] over the next decade. If you look at our demand in logistics, it's five percent of the global logistics market."
She added, "We are 20 percent of the global steel market. If you look at our demand in elevators, cement and so on ... Put simply, Neom is going to be the largest customer over the next few decades."

Triple Bay Yacht Club: Saudi Arabia’s Luxury Yacht Club Revealed
Amaala has revealed the plans for the luxurious and futuristic Triple Bay Yacht Club. The project, which is located on Saudi Arabia’s North-Western coast is on track for a 2024 completion date.
Designed by celebrated architects HKS , the 7,900sqm yacht club will be a full-service marina, offering a total of 120 berths for yachts up to 130m, as well as a wide array of facilities for Captains, and yacht crew. Guests arriving at the club can experience a lift that travels from the water’s edge to an exclusive sky lounge. In addition to the luxury sky lounge, Saudi Arabias yacht club will have plenty of areas for events, shopping, dining, live entertainment, and an amphitheater.
HKS designed the club with an infinity pool at the top, simulating an aft deck, as a nod to the boats that will dock there.
“We were clear from the outset that we wanted to create a building of its place, with the design drawing inspiration from local landscapes and culture, alongside the nature of the marine lifestyle,” Dan Flower, HKS design director and lead architect for Amaala Yacht Club.
The luxury development firm Amaala is helming the project, which is already well underway. Amaala is managed by The Red Sea Development Company, which also has a further two projects in the works. An extension from the Triple Bay Yacht Club is an “Art, culture and conservation site,” dubbed The Coastal Development, and “an exclusive enclave of luxurious resorts and residential estates,” named The Island.
“ Amaala offers an unparalleled opportunity to shape a new tourism destination and a new home for yachting on the Red Sea. It is a privilege to be involved as designers of this iconic yacht club, which is a centrepiece for the marina and set to evolve the guest experience,” commented Kevin Underwood, global head of hospitality at HKS .
Key features of Triple Bay Yacht Club for Captains and Crew include:
- 120 berths for yachts up to 130m.
- A terrace restaurant.
- An infinity pool.
- Deck and rooftop cabana lounge.
- A 10-hectare basin for hosting yachts of up 130 metres in length.
- An 80 metre Quai d’honneur for accommodating events
