- Sailboat Guide
Contender is a 16 ′ 0 ″ / 4.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Ben Lexcen and built by Rondar Raceboats, Chris Somner Dinghy Services, Performance Sailcraft, and Windrush Yachts starting in 1968.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The desire to have the best range of single-handed boats in the Hartley stable came true when we were offered the build rights, moulds, tooling and patterns for the Contender.
We were disappointed that unlike other classes we could not buy the copyright and be fully in charge over future policy and the destination for the Contender. With other Contender builders throughout the World, would we be able to sell our boats and compete?
We were happy with selling the boat into the UK market but the challenge to allow the Contender sailors to choose the boat of their choice gave us a challenge. In a very short time, we agreed a deal. Just to have an already fantastic range of single-hander boats, the Byte, Supernova, Blaze and now the World’s best single-hander trapeze boat, the Contender, would make the whole team very proud.
We decided not to compete but to design and build the World’s best Contender that sailors would want to buy if they wanted to win championships. To achieve this goal, we would need two important commodities. The first, no budget set for the boat cost and whatever we have to spend, we would spend it. The second, a Naval Architect that is good enough to design, oversee the patterns, moulds and tooling being built, then organise the boat build procedures to ensure the boat reaches its potential, ensuring the quality and durability of the boat is to Hartley Boats standard and reputation.
Fortunately, Peter Hobson one of the best Naval Architects jumped at the opportunity and was 100% convinced he could not only design and build a great Contender but a boat that could win the World Championship, provided he had the budget and the boat was being sailed by a capable experienced helm. Hartley Boats from the start of the campaign believed the only way to achieve our goal was that the Contender we build must have benefits over any other Contender manufacturer. The Hartley Boats team made it clear to Peter that whatever time it took, we would only go ahead when we were convinced we have those benefits
After months of drawings, time and effort Peter presented his list of benefits and improvements to the Hartley Boats Team to get the final approval. At that meeting we were surprised at the extensive list of benefits he could deliver for the Contender, the list is as follows:
- Laser aligned pintle recess to guarantee centreboard and rudder alignment
- Flush transom join
- Built-in drain tube flaps
- Re-designed transom tubes to improve drainage
- Narrowed side decks and lower rear tank to make the boat float lower in capsize
- Lower cockpit floor to increase room under the boom
- Rounded side-tanks to make tacking more comfortable
- Re-designed centreboard stirrups to give multiple pivot positions
- Re-designed centreboard to allow centreboard to move 50mm further aft in the boat for improved balance and pointing
- Redesigned shroud eye bolts to maximise squaring off the boom
- Specially designed mast-step integral with control line
- Raised foredeck to maximise room under the boom
- Re-designed stem fitting to make stronger forestay take off
- Fully moulded bulkhead to improve overall boat stiffness
- Increased core thickness to improve boat stiffness
- Re-designed dagger-board rudder stock
- Completely maximised waterline length
Following twelve months of hard work, Peter with the Hartley’s Team had produced the first boat and after trials we were overjoyed with the results. With a strong order book and new customers feed-back and sailing results, we have clearly confirmed that this is a very special Contender and if sailed by the right helm can and will win the Worlds, it is just a matter of time.
For Hartley Boats, when we show our new Contender be it in the UK or at the Dusseldorf Boat Show, we are proud that the boat looks stylish, elegant and a boat you would want to sail, the customers reaction when they see the boat speaks for itself, we are very pleased we are a Contender builder. Every new Contender has a measurement certificate and is complete and ready to sail.
When we sell a new boat Hartley Boats likes to complete a full boat handover to ensure that you fully understand how to rig your new boat but most importantly that you get the best from your new investment. We also tune your new Contender and go through the boat set up for a beat, reach and run. This helps you achieve the best results when racing.
For our UK customers, we are able to deliver if required. Overseas customers, we are able to ship anywhere in the World. We not only obtain the best shipping costs, we load your boat in the container, prepare and secure your boat to ensure it arrives at its destination in the very same condition it left the UK.

The ICA Committee calls for the Anual General Meeting (AGM) for 2021 on Sunday October 3rd, 2021 at 08:00 UTC by means of a video conference. Meeting details will be announced later.
Travel restriction due to the pandemic led to the cancelation of the 2020 and 2021 Worlds events. Consequently, the Annual General Meetings that are normally held during a Worlds event also did not take place. Therefor the Committee proposes an alternative in the form of an AGM by means of video conferencing, to enable every Contender Class member to participate safely.
The preliminary agenda is as follows:
- Previous Minutes
- Matters Arising
- Presidents Report.
- Treasurers Report.
- Technical Report.

2018 BALLOT INSTRUCTIONS
The following are proposed changes for the International Contender Class Rules. This ballot comprises of proposed rule changes that were approved (received the required 2/3 majority) at the 2015 Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Medemblik and the AGM at Sonderborg in 2017 and the AGM in McCrae in 2018. The delay for the 2015 proposal is due to failure to agree a wording with ISAF for the electronic equipment rule. This will need to be put into SI’s in the future if required at a regatta.
The proposals are now presented to the whole eligible (paid up) membership of the International Contender Association as at the time of the AGM.in McCrea. National Secretaries or other responsible officers shall distribute this ballot to eligible members. Members who wish to vote must do so on this ballot paper and then return this ballot to an officer representing his/her country. Either in hard copy or electronically. That officer will:
- Verify that the voter is eligible to vote:
- Count the votes for and against the proposal.
- Further, will report the sail number and name of each voter
Our rules state that the ballot can take a maximum of 3 months (07 June 2018) for the returns to come back to the secretary and only those returns shall be counted.

Contender 28T: 2020 Boat Buyers Guide
- Updated: December 12, 2019
Homestead, Florida-based Contender Boats, Inc. celebrated their 35th anniversary, and has launched several thousand boats spanning the three and a half decades. The boats are recognized world wide as tournament winners, and are known to keep captain and crew “Always in the Game” when they are on the hunt for big fish.
Contender builds boats from 24-44 feet for fisherman and their families to explore the blue water, or just enjoy a day cruising around the bay to the sandbar.
Each boat is custom-built featuring different options for engine power, electronics, and upholstery. The list of options seems nearly endless with a variety of fishing, convenience, and other options available to every model. Front and rear seating are available on all models, but standard options traditionally keep the cockpit minimal and clean.
Contender Boats’ founder, president and owner Joe Neber is an avid saltwater angler who has been very active in marine-resource conservation, particularly the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA).
The company proudly proclaims, “When adverse weather prevails without notice, people are confident in our product to get them home safely and comfortably.”
Contender 28T
That’s “T”, for “Tournament,” and this Contender is always ready for action. One of the original Contender models, the 28 returns with a new more aesthetically pleasing rounded cap, and other small modifications to the re-launched classic. You can have it loaded, with forward and rear seating, or without the seating for and more spacious deck and room to fish. The standard forward seating has removable backrests, and features substantial storage underneath.
With the standard forward seating, three storage compartments are beneath forward seating, which has removable backrests.
Up front is a fully lined and insulated 140-gallon fish box; aft you’ll find another pair, port and starboard, 76 gallons each. Bait flourishes in a 40-gallon transom livewell with standard 1100GPH pump
The pair of under deck rod lockers will please our offshore CC survey respondents, who say they carry an average of eight rods with them per trip.
The 28T comes standard with 4 gunwale flush mounted rod holders; five more rod holders line the back of the leaning post.
At the helm, an oversized panel welcomes room for plenty of electronics from the multi brand options installed by the Contender factory.
Survey Says: On Target

USCG suspends search for missing boater after crash with rig off Grand Isle coast
GRAND ISLE, La. (WVUE) - The search for a missing boater has been suspended by the United States Coast Guard after a vessel crashed into a rig off the coast of Grand Isle.
The United States Coast Guard says they received an urgent alert Tuesday from the boat Linedout, indicating that they were taking on water near ship shoal 87 with two individuals aboard and a third man overboard.
The USCG sent out a helicopter aircrew and a 45-foot response boat to rescue the two onboard and begin searching for the third.
The lift boat Gloria also responded and was able to retrieve the two injured boaters.
The chopper crew saw no visual trace of the missing man but were able to airlift the two injured individuals from the Gloria and take them to a hospital in New Orleans. Both men were conscious and responsive.
Search efforts continued until Thursday around 1:20 p.m.

"Single-handed" means sailed by only one person. The boat has a trapeze which allows the sailor to use their weight more effectively. The design of the boat does not favour sailors within a narrow or extreme size or weight range, past champions have ranged from 60 kg to more than 90 kg.
The sexiest singlehandeD Sailboat in the world. It was designed in the 60s, but some things are timeless. The Contender continues to be one of the most popular single handed boats in the world.
