Test / Test of Aquila 44, a surprisingly powerfull power cat

aquila 44 power catamaran range

We tried Aquila 44 off the coast of La Grande-Motte. The tramontane blows at more than 20 knots raising a choppy sea ideal for our test and to realize the excellent sea passage of this catamaran.

Efficient wave piercing bulbs

Essai Aquila 44

The Aquila is offered with 225 hp Volvo D4's as standard , but our version is equipped with the more powerful option of 2 x 320 hp Volvo shaft mounted. Against the wind and a rough sea, this motorisation propels us at 18 knots, cutting the waves and the impression of ease is astonishing. Inside, no jolts are perceptible and this allows you to move around on board as you go about your business, even in these rather harsh conditions. On the way back, with the waves at the back, the speed increases to 19 knots, the gap is not convincing and shows the merits of adding bulbs. The very smooth passage and the extra stability allow you to remain seated at the bar even at 18 knots. The active comfort is therefore as good as the comfort at anchor . He is remarkable in this category.

Essai Aquila 44

Interesting optional autonomy

Essai Aquila 44

At 18 knots the consumption is 114 l/h and if you stabilise at 14-15 knots, you will need to count 85 l/h. With the 1,100 l tanks, the range is about 180 miles and 400 miles at 9 knots, but there is an optional extra 360 l reserve that will be welcome to make longer trips quickly

An electric version in the United States

A version with Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motors, powered by two BMWi3 batteries, which are themselves regenerated by a 25 kW generator and solar panels , is offered in the USA by Nova Luxe. A range of 875 miles is possible, but at 6.5 knots and a top speed of 9 knots.

A user-friendly cockpit

Essai Aquila 44

The central cockpit is very spacious and user-friendly with its two side benches. For intensive use, a less exposed interior wheelhouse is preferable. And then the frontal descent, it's super practical when you need to go from the helm to the fly, take a mooring on the front beach or check the anchorage .

Aquila 44 Power Catamaran, double advantage

aquila 44 power catamaran range

Two hulls give you more space on board, and so greater comfort, and also no rolling when at anchor and stable sailing with lower fuel consumption

by Niccolò Volpati – photo by Nicolas Claris

Nothing was missing from the roll call of nasty conditions. A tramontana wind was blowing at a constant 18 knots, with gusts of 25 . The waves, especially farther from the coast, were high. At the start, they were around fifty centimetres high, steep and so fairly annoying, but then they rose up to nearly a metre. It was perfect for putting to the test a catamaran that was designed for cruising and comfort. And the feeling was immediately a good one .

Aquila 44

The two hulls mean there is no rolling, either when under way or when at anchor . You do move about a little bit, but compared to a single-hull boat it felt that spending money on a stabiliser would be a waste. I did the toughest test by putting the boat in neutral, and side on to waves that were nearly a metre high.   We bounced around a bit, but it wasn’t bad. Whereas when I was in minimum revs or neutral, with the bow into the wind, there was almost no roll at all.

It’s the same when you open the throttle right up . The catamaran is stable and copes well with the steep, fast waves caused by the tramontana. The acceleration isn’t bad, even though that is not the main reason for buying a powered multi-hull. The engines are two Volvo Penta D4s, each developing 300 hp. That is one of the engine combinations that is offered as an optional, while the standard fitting is a pair of 230 hp engines. The 300 option didn’t seem excessive; indeed, I would say that all that power is needed.

The Aquila 44 Power Catamaran should be compared with a Navetta boat, it certainly isn’t a “speedster” , but the more powerful engines give greater range and thus also more cruising speed options. It takes 2800 rpm to plane, and top speed comes at 3500. You can choose the perfect cruising speed within that 700-rpm range. Within it, the speed increases from 11.1 to 18.6 knots, and fuel consumption from 67 to 114 litres an hour in total, for both engines. That is a decidedly low figure, and thus a comforting one, as is the one for litres per nautical mile. At minimum planing speed, you need 5.7 litres per mile, and at top speed that becomes 6.1. Practically the same fuel consumption at all the higher speeds.

Aquila 44 Power Catamaran

The figures for displacement mode are also very reassuring . If you don’t want to sail faster than ten knots, litres per hour figures stay below fifty, and the amount needed to go a mile comes in between 3 and 4.

So full marks, then, both for the limited amount of fuel used, and also for stability under way, even with a rough sea. The two hulls do, however, have a few problems relating to handling when manoeuvring. At low speeds when manoeuvring, the two engines installed on each keel are very effective. It certainly isn’t difficult to dock a powered catamaran in harbour, not even when there is a strong wind coming from the side .

Aquila 44 Power Catamaran

The other clear advantage comes from its size . Over six and a half metres beam in a boat that is just over thirteen metres long overall give a good idea of what we are talking about. And despite the amount of available space, the designers have made the most of it, without wasting any. What I most appreciated was the two sets of stairs to get up to the fly bridge. One of them is in the cockpit, as could be expected, and the other leads to the deckhouse and the bow area. It is an excellent solution because it enables you to get around on the boat very easily. They are a bit like an entrance and exit, and so there is no danger of getting in each other’s way, even if there are a lot of passengers on board.

I also admired the interior ventilation . There are plenty of portholes and hatches on deck. I counted ten just on the deckhouse and the gangways. It is a good solution, not least because it means that you don’t have to install an air conditioning system and the generator that comes with it if you don’t want to.

Aquila 44 Power Catamaran

I also liked the decision to have just one steering position, located on the fly bridge , thus leaving the entire dinette free for   lunch, living and seating areas. There is plenty of room, and lots of 360-degree views thanks to the windows facing forward, aft and to the side. Even the stairs leading down to the deckhouse on the fly bridge aren’t a major visual block. They have been placed where the pillar that divides the two windscreen panels would be, and despite the fact that the stairs are wide enough for people to be able to use them safely, they hardly interrupt the forward view.

There are two big advantages to this powered catamaran: the comfortable area and the low fuel consumption . It is a shame that the fuel tanks aren’t very large, and so don’t give a lot of range because these features make you want to go a long way without coming into port, but even at minimum planing speed, you can’t even quite do two hundred nautical miles.

Tvel completes development of new fuel for Paks nuclear plant

!{Model.Description}

VVER-440 fuel fabrication (Credit: Tvel)

The full package of documents is handed over to the Hungarian customer, MVM Paks Ltd, for further licensing of the new fuel by the national nuclear power regulator, Tvel said.

The first fuel assemblies have also passed acceptance testing at Tvel's Elemash Machine-building plant in Elektrostal, Moscow region.

The new modification of VVER-440 second generation fuel increases the efficiency of fuel usage and advances the economic performance of the power plant operation, Tvel said.

The engineering contract for development of the new VVER-440 fuel was signed in late 2017. The development and validation work involved a number of Russian enterprises, including OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests .

The first consignment of the modified fuel will be delivered to Paks nuclear power plant later this year. The four-unit Paks nuclear plant, which entered operation between 1982 and 1987 currently operate on a 15-month fuel cycle and supply around 50% of Hungary's electricity.

Ch. 9 The Development of Russia

Ivan i and the rise of moscow, learning objective.

  • Outline the key points that helped Moscow become so powerful and how Ivan I accomplished these major victories
  • Moscow was considered a small trading outpost under the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal into the 13th century.
  • Power struggles and constant raids under the Mongol Empire’s Golden Horde caused once powerful cities, such as Kiev, to struggle financially and culturally.
  • Ivan I utilized the relative calm and safety of the northern city of Moscow to entice a larger population and wealth to move there.
  • Alliances between Golden Horde leaders and Ivan I saved Moscow from many of the raids and destruction of other centers, like Tver.

A rival city to Moscow that eventually lost favor under the Golden Horde.

Grand Prince of Vladimir

The title given to the ruler of this northern province, where Moscow was situated.

The Rise of Moscow

Moscow was only a small trading outpost in the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal in Kievan Rus’ before the invasion of Mongol forces during the 13th century. However, due to the unstable environment of the Golden Horde, and the deft leadership of Ivan I at a critical time during the 13th century, Moscow became a safe haven of prosperity during his reign. It also became the new seat of power of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ivan I (also known as Ivan Kalita) was born around 1288 to the Prince of Moscow, Daniil Aleksandrovich. He was born during a time of devastation and upheaval in Rus’. Kiev had been overtaken by the invading Mongol forces in 1240, and most of the Rus’ principalities had been absorbed into the Golden Horde of the Mongol Empire by the time Ivan was born. He ascended to the seat of Prince of Moscow after the death of his father, and then the death of his older brother Yury.

image

Ivan I. He was born around 1288 and died in either 1340 or 1341, still holding the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir.

Ivan I stepped into a role that had already been expanded by his predecessors. Both his older brother and his father had captured nearby lands, including Kolomna and Mozhaisk. Yury had also made a successful alliance with the Mongol leader Uzbeg Khan and married his sister, securing more power and advantages within the hierarchy of the Golden Horde.

Ivan I continued the family tradition and petitioned the leaders of the Golden Horde to gain the seat of Grand Prince of Vladimir. His other three rivals, all princes of Tver, had previously been granted the title in prior years. However they were all subsequently deprived of the title and all three aspiring princes also eventually ended up murdered. Ivan I, on the other hand, garnered the title from Khan Muhammad Ozbeg in 1328. This new title, which he kept until his death around 1340, meant he could collect taxes from the Russian lands as a ruling prince and position his tiny city as a major player in the Vladimir region.

Moscow’s Rise

During this time of upheaval, the tiny outpost of Moscow had multiple advantages that repositioned this town and set it up for future prosperity under Ivan I. Three major contributing factors helped Ivan I relocate power to this area:

  • It was situated in between other major principalities on the east and west so it was often protected from the more devastating invasions.
  • This relative safety, compared to Tver and Ryazan, for example, started to bring in tax-paying citizens who wanted a safe place to build a home and earn a livelihood.
  • Finally, Moscow was set up perfectly along the trade route from Novgorod to the Volga River, giving it an economic advantage from the start.

Ivan I also spurred on the growth of Moscow by actively recruiting people to move to the region. In addition, he bought the freedom of people who had been captured by the extensive Mongol raids. These recruits further bolstered the population of Moscow. Finally, he focused his attention on establishing peace and routing out thieves and raiding parties in the region, making for a safe and calm metaphorical island in a storm of unsettled political and military upsets.

image

Kievan Rus’ 1220-1240. This map illustrates the power dynamics at play during the 13th century shortly before Ivan I was born. Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde, sat to the southeast, while Moscow (not visible on this map) was tucked up in the northern forests of Vladimir-Suzdal.

Ivan I knew that the peace of his region depended upon keeping up an alliance with the Golden Horde, which he did faithfully. Moscow’s increased wealth during this era also allowed him to loan money to neighboring principalities. These regions then became indebted to Moscow, bolstering its political and financial position.

In addition, a few neighboring cities and villages were subsumed into Moscow during the 1320s and 1330s, including Uglich, Belozero, and Galich. These shifts slowly transformed the tiny trading outpost into a bustling city center in the northern forests of what was once Kievan Rus’.

Russian Orthodox Church and The Center of Moscow

Ivan I committed some of Moscow’s new wealth to building a splendid city center and creating an iconic religious setting. He built stone churches in the center of Moscow with his newly gained wealth. Ivan I also tempted one of the most important religious leaders in Rus’, the Orthodox Metropolitan Peter, to the city of Moscow. Before the rule of the Golden Horde the original Russian Orthodox Church was based in Kiev. After years of devastation, Metropolitan Peter transferred the seat of power to Moscow where a new Renaissance of culture was blossoming. This perfectly timed transformation of Moscow coincided with the decades of devastation in Kiev, effectively transferring power to the north once again.

image

Peter of Moscow and scenes from his life as depicted in a 15th-century icon. This religious leader helped bring cultural power to Moscow by moving the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church there during Ivan I’s reign.

One of the most lasting accomplishments of Ivan I was to petition the Khan based in Sarai to designate his son, who would become Simeon the Proud, as the heir to the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir. This agreement a line of succession that meant the ruling head of Moscow would almost always hold power over the principality of Vladimir, ensuring Moscow held a powerful position for decades to come.

Developed by Capital Partners, Metropolis opened in 2009 and provides 82,000 sqm of fully enclosed retail accommodation and 2,900 parking spaces.  It is widely recognized as Russia's premier retail development with a favorable location in the north-west of the city, along the Leningradskiy highway and next to the metro station Voykovskaya.  The shopping centre is part of the institutional quality mixed-use complex Metropolis with 311,000 sqm of gross built area which, apart from the shopping centre, includes three office buildings with a total GLA of approximately 80,000 sqm.

“We are very pleased to be acquiring the Metropolis Mall in Moscow,” said Brian Niles, Head of MSREI EMEA.  “The acquisition is consistent with our strategy of investing in high quality assets in Russia, a market that should continue to benefit from strong growth in consumer demand.  Together with our previous investment in the Galeria Mall in St Petersburg, we believe the acquisition of Metropolis will deliver operational synergies and strategic benefits associated with owning two prime shopping centers in Russia.  We look forward to managing the assets as we seek to deliver additional value to our investors.”

Metropolis is one of the most visited shopping centres in Moscow with approximately 55,000 customers per day in 2012.  The complex is fully leased and has a waiting list for retailers wanting to rent space.  Major tenants include food hypermarket Karusel and department store Stockmann, along with a large number of international retailers including Michael Kors, H&M, GAP, River Island, New Look, DKNY, Bebe, Jaeger, Uterque, Imaginarium, and Zara.  The center also has a multi-screen cinema operated by Cinema Park Deluxe and a bowling alley.

Among the awards received by Metropolis are: the “Best Mixed-use Complex” award in the Commercial Real Estate Awards, Moscow, 2009; “Best new development category extra-large” award in the Russian Council of Shopping Centres; and “Best Shopping Centre of the Year” award in the FIABCI “Prix d’excellence” Awards, 2010.

Capital Partners was advised by JLL.
