LEOPARD 3 Racing

The ICAP Leopard_3 , the 100ft super-maxi racing yacht is preparing to launch her assault on the west-to-east monohull transatlantic sailing record in the coming weeks.

The ICAP Leopard 3 features a radical new design concept and is a luxurious, signature charter yacht, a passage record breaker and a race winning super maxi sailing yacht.

The ICAP Leopard 3’s structural design and detailing were created by  Farr_Yacht_Design and her interior and exterior styling is by  Ken_Freivokh  Designs.  All other aspects have been managed by owner Mike Slade’s own very capable team, Ocean Marine.

The yacht is 30 m  (100ft) in length, with a 6.8 m beam, a 5.5 m  draft and a 4.5 metre fixed bowsprit. Her towering mast is 47 m high and her keel cants 40 degrees either side of centreline.

The yachts sleek hull is made of a powerful carbon fibre/nomex combination enabling exceptional speed. The interior volume allows for spacious accommodations which is a notable departure from the current fleet of extremely narrow boats. The wide hull of the ICAP Leopard 3 is especially suited for offshore high-speed sailing and racing and is enhanced by the presence of a chine that increases water flow off the hull and reduces structural weight.

LEOPARD 3 Racing.

The ICAP Leopard features a set of efficient underwater foils including a canting keel, twin asymmetric lifting canards forward and a single rudder on centerline aft. The stability of this canting the keel is equivalent to 200 crew members sitting on the rail, without the added weight. Two hydraulic cylinders typically operating at a load of 61 tonnes cant the keel.

The ICAP Leopards towering rig is  47 metres above the water and can carry up to 15,000 square feet of sail area.

Sailing yacht ICAP  Leopard_3 has other unique High Performance Features such as twin dagger boards, (rather than a single forward canard) mounted on hydraulic rollers and a single rudder.  The canards, located on either side of the mast, perfectly balance the sail forces and are lifted and lowered using hydraulically powered pinch rollers. A single, aft rudder controls the steering.  The sailing yacht has the ability to take aboard up to six tonnes of water in the transom area enabling the bow to lift in fast downwind conditions.

Designed and styled by ‘Ken Freivokh Design’ in Fareham, UK, the Leopard’s interior is fitted out in an ultra light, airy and modern decor. The elegant and modern saloon is fitted with home comforts and comfortably seats 12.  The large dining table is to port and to starboard a custom-built carbon coffee table is surrounded by ample seating in rich cream leather.

Following a period of extensive racing, sailing yacht Leopard will ‘evolve’ into phase 2 when three luxurious double guest cabins forward will be fitted prior to the yacht being offered to the termed charter markets of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Her interior is fully removable for racing.

LEOPARD 3 Saloon

The 100ft super maxi racing vessel ICAP  Leopard_3 is currently berthed in New York  preparing to launch her attack upon the west-to-east monohull transatlantic sailing record in the coming weeks.

Launched in 2007 ICAP Leopard, has already broken 12 major offshore racing records, including the fastest elapsed time ever set in the prestigious Rolex Fastnet Race. The west-to-east monohull transatlantic sailing record will see her tackle the path between Ambrose Light, NY and the Lizard Point, which marks the entrance to the English Channel.

ICAP Leopards target for this attempt will primarily be the record for monohull yachts with power-assisted systems of seven days, 19 hours and 21 minutes that she set in June 2008. Since setting this benchmark the yacht has undergone a series of modifications and the crew are confident that in the right conditions, they will be able to better Mari Cha IV’s outright monohull transatlantic speed record of 6 days 17 hours and 52 minutes.

Negotiating complex weather systems will play an integral role in ICAP Leopard’s latest transatlantic record attempt and will be monitored by veteran navigator Hugh Agnew.

The Captain of the ICAP Leopard is  Chris Sherlock who commented: “We can’t wait to get stuck into another attempt on the Atlantic record. Last time a tight weather window forced us into accepting less than ideal conditions for our record run but we have slightly more leeway this time. Our weather window will open on the 11th May and then we will have roughly three weeks to plan our departure. This should allow us to set ourselves up for the best possible weather pattern.”

Mike Slade the owner of sailing yacht ICAP Leopard noted: “This is something that I have been looking forward to ever since we crossed the finish line last time around. It has been brilliant to hold the record for yachts with power-assisted winches but we know we can go faster. The yacht and crew have been tempered over a two year period of hard racing and we are now sailing faster and harder than ever before. We will have a decent period of time in which to pick our weather window and the crew are all preparing to go on standby for what promises to be a thrilling sprint across the pond!”

The sailing yacht  Leopard_3 is available for select charters providing a unique blend of on-board luxury coupled with out-and-out performance to make her one of the most desirable yachts available for charter today.

The Leopard is available for charter in 2 different arenas:

Corporate Charters – Leopard can entertain up to 20 guests making her the ideal platform for corporate or private functions.

Racing Charters – A limited number of guests can join Leopard’s own professional crew during selected races and regattas.

CLEARWATER, Fl. (July 28, 2020) — Building upon almost 25 years of product evolution, Leopard Catamarans, in partnership with design teams at Robertson and Caine and Simonis & Voogd Yacht Design, has officially launched the newest addition to its sailing range, the new Leopard 42.

The vision of Leopard 42 was not a simple replacement for the highly successful Leopard 40. In fact, the result is a much more spacious and superior yacht featuring a sharper exterior, an additional entertainment area, and larger cabins with increased comfort, natural light, privacy, and sense of openness. All while maintaining Leopard’s signature balance of comfort and uncompromised performance.

The focus on exterior styling was to evolve and apply the modern appearance of the Leopard 50 (Boat of the Year 2019), which features continuous hull side windows, a continuous hardtop, and contrasting coachroof accents. The look of the Leopard 42 was then sharpened further by featuring a completely horizonal chine and a plumb bow. The interior design of the Leopard 42 adopted the styling that was developed for the revolutionary Leopard 53 Powercat (Multihull of the Year 2020). With modern contrasts, indirect lighting, and classy finishes, the Leopard 42 brings more luxury and elegance to the Leopard sailboat range.

A dramatic difference between the Leopard 42, and any catamaran under 45 feet, is the addition of the coachroof lounge. The lounge offers another 50 square feet of external entertainment area, which in turn increases the overall exterior entertainment area by 65%. The lounge is the perfect relaxation venue at anchor, featuring an upholstered L-shaped settee and backrest, as well as a fixed GRP table.

“For a catamaran of this size, the goal was to introduce a lounge that not only “fit” into the design but without adding too much weight. By integrating the geometry of the lounge into the GRP hardtop, we were able to achieve a lightweight area that added less weight to the boat than one average sized crew member.” — Michael Robertson, Leopard 42 Chief Designer, Robertson and Caine.

Access to the lounge is a feature that is revolutionary to the Leopard sailboat fleet and a comfortable stairway leads up to it from the port side deck, without intruding into the aft cockpit headroom or interfering with the helm arrangement. The stairwell is tucked inboard of the coachroof combing so it does not impede on the aesthetics of the exterior profile and leaves an unobstructed view from inside the aft cockpit.

The fully protected helm station is still located in the classic Leopard Catamarans position — raised and to starboard — and all lines are led back for single-handed sailing. The captain has direct visibility of the coachroof lounge, the aft cockpit, the bows and sterns, as well as the mainsail through a skylight.  Inside, natural light floods in through the overhead skylight and 360-degree windows. The forwardfacing settee, situated aft, allows for direct communication with the forward facing, U-shaped galley, now found on all sailing models. Also unique to a catamaran of this size, the Leopard 42 offers the forward, watertight access door that provides superior ventilation, easy circulation and exceptional visibility forward. An innovation first introduced by Leopard catamarans, and part of its DNA.

Down below, all beds, forward and aft, are island berths accessible from both sides, but most importantly are wider than on the Leopard 40. In addition to larger beds, floor space increased by a combined 35% in the guest cabins and 30% in the owner’s cabin. To achieve more sense of space within the hull cabins, an effort to maximize natural light was achieved by utilizing the continuous window along the hull, adding windows wherever space permitted, and maximizing the height of each window. As a result, the Leopard 42 hull interior boasts double the window surface area than the Leopard 40.

All cabins aboard the Leopard 42 include their own private en-suite heads. This is a significant improvement over the Leopard 40, where both guest cabins share one central head. While this is a vast improvement, the most significant achievement is that both guest heads include their own designated shower area; a feature not currently found on catamarans in this size range.

Not neglecting the demand for a well performing catamaran, stepped hulls and a powerful rig with an overlapping Genoa provide for her superior performance in all wind conditions. Additionally, the hull engineering which goes into modern cruising catamarans is as complex as the requirements are stringent. An innovative internal structure design on the Leopard 42 results in a strong and stiff offshore sailing yacht able to go anywhere, while at the same time having a beautiful open plan layout with large windows all around and opening doors aft and forward.

As naval architect Alex Simonis of Simonis-Voogd Yacht Design states, “Although it sounds like all the development goes into creating more space, more windows and doors, the reality is far from that. For the design of all Leopards, their performance potential remains one of the top priorities. We spend a lot of time refining the rig geometry and the sail layout to boost the efficiency of the rig plan. At the same time, the ongoing refinement in hull and appendage design allows us to create a yacht with better sea motion and more agility. “

The new Leopard 42 has the unmistakable DNA of the brand, with plenty of exciting new technology and building techniques used to make it a magnificent ocean-going yacht with a feel of space, comfort and performance only previously found in significantly larger models.

Test sails will be conducted in Cape Town in November 2020. The official world premiere will be at the 2021 Miami International Boat Show and the European premiere will be at the International Multihull Boat Show in La Grande-Motte (Southern France). Preliminary renderings, technical information and preliminary polars are available online now.

“I am very excited by the launch of this new 42 this Fall. The project was delayed because of the global pandemic, but we were committed to launch this new model this coming Fall. We had been focused on larger units with the introduction of the 50 and the 53PC this year, so it is very refreshing to work on a smaller unit, that offers many new ideas, and packs so many features in 42 feet, for the weekly user, long range sailing and for the full time live-aboard in all sea conditions. Simonis-Voogd continues to push the envelope, model after model, with catamarans that offers more comfort and continue to perform like a Leopard. The combination of optimized hull shapes, powerful rig and  stepped hulls continue to deliver great results for our owners and charter customers”. Franck Bauguil, VP Yacht Ownership & Product Development for Moorings, Sunsail and Leopard Catamarans.

In addition to private ownership through Leopard Catamarans, this yacht will be available for ownership through the Moorings Yacht Ownership Program, as the Moorings 4200. The Leopard 42 will also be available for charter vacations in select destinations worldwide through The Moorings.

McConaghy sailing yacht Leopard 3 sold

The 33 metre McConaghy sailing yacht Leopard 3 has been sold with the buyer introduced by Dennis Frederiksen of Fraser .

Built in GRP by Australian yard McConaghy Boats to a design by Farr Yacht Design , Leopard 3 was delivered in 2007 as a high-performance yacht. A full refit in 2012 saw her gain three en-suite double cabins and two singles, accommodating eight guests.

She is arguably the most high profile racer cruiser yacht in existence and has a trophy cabinet packed with silverware, having taken first place at the 2016 Rolex Maxi Cup and the Voiles de St Tropez, among a host of other regattas and races worldwide.

The concept behind her was to create a yacht with a radical dual purpose: high performance for racing with a canting keel and twin daggerboards, combined with excellent internal volume, accessories and amenities to meet the demands of the top-end charter market. The owner focuses on chartering her to keen sailors and corporate clients wanting to enjoy high-performance sailing and she generates a steady income year-round.

She is capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots under sail, while a 230hp Yanmar diesel engine gives her a cruising speed of 10.5 knots under power.

The asking price of Leopard 3 has been withheld.

Powering Across the Atlantic on a Leopard 46 Powercat

sailing yacht leopard

There are thousands of stories out there about crossing oceans under sail. But transiting a long stretch of the ocean under power? That's a different adventure.

Delivering a Leopard 46 Powercat

Leopard agent and delivery captain Guilherme Kodja had a challenge. A new Leopard 46 Powercat needed delivery from the Robertson & Caine yard in South Africa to a buyer in Brazil, and an ocean lay in the way. Captain Kodja started planning and, ten months later, set out for a month-long, 4,453 nautical mile (nm) trek across the South Atlantic with three crew.

Delivering a power yacht has similarities and differences from delivering a sailing vessel. Fuel is the priority. You need a lot, and there's no guarantee you'll get good quality fuel once you leave mainland ports.

Weather is a concern, but your criteria are a little different. "Sea state is more important than wind direction," says Captain Kodja. "We can travel a more direct route because there's no tacking."

The Route and Plan

This won't be a non-stop trip. At a cruising speed of 6.8 knots, the Leopard 46 used just over two gallons (eight liters) of fuel per hour. With a built-in diesel tankage of over 400 gallons (1,852 liters), the Leopard 46 Power Cat has a standard range of more than 1,500 nautical miles.

Like sailing yachts, wind and current influence a powered delivery, even if the priorities differ. "We headed north for better wind and current," said Kodja. "It's a longer distance, but faster and more comfortable." And the need for more fuel somewhere along the way means he can't easily take a more southern route.

Untitled design - 2023-06-28T165814.111

Leg One - Cape Town to Luderitz, Namibia

The first step was a coast-hugging trip up the African coast. This 502-nautical-mile trip took about three days. The goal was to top-up fuel and provisions while waiting for a good weather window. Captain Kodja noted that "a powering boat pitches more than a sailing, so choosing a good window is important."

Leg Two - Luderitz to St. Helena

Though St. Helena lies north of Itajai, Brazil, their ultimate destination, it's a popular stopping point for yachts crossing the Atlantic. It's not just that the northerly route is more comfortable; there are few places to the south to stop. This 1,338nm leg took eight days of motoring and used 424 gallons (1,926 liters) of fuel. This was the last stop to refuel for the rest of the trip.

Leg Three - St. Helena to Martin Vaz Island and Trinidade

The Martin Vaz and Trinidade islands are the easternmost possessions of Brazil, and the crew made a brief stop there to perform the 500-hour service on the engines. This was another long leg at 8 1/2 days, covering 1,385 miles. It was a welcome return to Brazilian waters after a long time at sea.

Leg Four - Martin Vaz Island/Trinidade to Cabo Frio

Rio de Janeiro was not in the plan. The closest the crew ventured was nearby Cabo Frio. It's there, after four and a half days and 725 nm of motoring from Martin Vaz Island, they had some exciting encounters with busy shipping traffic headed into Rio and a military exercise. They ducked into Cabo Frio to miss some weather and only stayed overnight.

Leg Five - Cabo Frio to Itajai

The final sprint to the yacht's new home was along the coast of Brazil. This three-day coastal passage covered another 465 nm of water before completing the trip.

Fuel, Engines, and No Problems

Captain Kodja solved the fuel problems by carrying external tanks. It took twenty-eight five-and-a-half gallon (25L) jerry cans and five fifty-five gallon (250L) drums. These were latched to the deck and cockpit where they could fit.

"Refueling wasn't a problem," Kodja said. "We'd look at the weather and find a good window of calm. With an electric pump, it worked easily."

"The engines ran like a Swiss clock," he added. "Quiet and smooth, we usually couldn't hear them from the forward cockpit."

As far as other problems go, the maiden voyage of this Leopard 46 came off with no significant hitches - a testament to Leopard quality out of the factory. "We had a hose work loose; we had to tighten a few screws," the captain said. "Nothing, really."

Untitled design - 2023-06-28T170210.806

Weather, Wildlife, and Warships

In a month at sea, they avoided dramatic weather. By watching the weather and picking good windows, they made out well. And along the way, they saw spectacular wildlife.

"We stayed south, below the humpback whale migration," said Kodja. One thing they did not want to do was hit a whale. But they did see some of those fantastic creatures. Close to Brazil, they spotted dozens of whales at once. Other sightings included rare porpoises and countless sea birds.

Another surprise was sailing into a multinational naval exercise off the coast of Brazil. The crew expected lots of shipping traffic off Rio, but they were surprised to find a naval fleet off Cabo Frio. The captain spent the last twenty miles in VHF contact with U.S. warships talking about positions and maneuvering plans.

Smooth Start for a Happy Owner

The trip is documented in a series of videos , with some stunning sights and marine life. Captain Kodja and his crew made the delivery of a lifetime and put the boat through her paces. And the Leopard 46 showed off her build quality and capability, delivering a flawless performance on a demanding delivery.

"We brought the boat back for the Rio boat show," Kodja said. "Even after the 210nm delivery to the show, it took almost nothing to get this boat looking perfect."
