Our amazing 48 foot sailing catamarans.

Voyages are conducted aboard the award-winning Leopard 4600 catamarans. These elegantly designed and precision built vessels incorporate safety features, large deck space, a roomy cockpit, light and ergonomic galley, and an enormous transom (for easy entry and exit from the water while wearing SCUBA gear), with an advanced sail plan that makes them fast and easy to sail. These vessels offer comfortable accommodations, excellent safety and quality construction. The perfect choice for our trips, the catamarans provide a stable platform that allows us to dive in all conditions and have plenty of room to store our gear. Full equipment is provided aboard for each participant and there is no sharing of SCUBA gear or waiting for your turn to dive. As we dive directly off our yachts, you do not have to wait around for a dive boat to pick you up, allowing you much more adventure.

The 4800 catamarans are true blue-water cruisers featuring a self-stacking mainsail with integral sail cover, roller-furling genoa, and twin 55 hp diesel engines. An electric windlass with handheld remote makes anchoring easy. The raised helm station is at the forward end of the spacious cockpit and above the cockpit’s hardtop roof, providing 360 degrees of visibility. A hardtop bimini shades the helm. The cockpit has walk-through access to the swim platforms, a full electronics package that includes a color chart-plotter and autopilot, stereo/MP3player speakers, a large table, and lots of seating. A wide door opens to the luxurious saloon.

The saloon features a plush U-shaped settee and a large dining table with seating for eight that converts to a double berth. There’s also a HD TV. The galley has all amenities and plenty of counter space. The yacht has four luxurious double and two single staterooms with dressing areas and en suite electric heads and separate shower stalls. There is ample storage space throughout. Numerous opening ports and hatches provide superior ventilation to keep the cabins cool and comfortable. The yacht is equipped with a powerful generator.

The Metal Shark 75 Endurance is a welded aluminum pilothouse catamaran with a crew-friendly layout optimized for visibility, protection, crew movement, payload capacity, and functionality. In DSV configuration, the vessel shown here has been equipped with a full complement of highly specialized systems for mapping, inspection, and repair of subsea oil and gas pipelines using dive teams. The Metal Shark design team worked extensively with the client to create a design that mitigates inherent hazards associated with live-boating, which is the practice of utilizing a mobile, as opposed to anchored, vessel in support of dive operations. Endurance-class catamarans may be configured for a wide range of mission profiles including military command and control, law enforcement, port security, and fire rescue.

Hull Design

Each Metal Shark Endurance-class catamaran features a proven Metal Shark hull design that has been engineered and built to precise tolerances. To achieve its superior hull life rating of 30+ years, the vessel’s hull, deck, and pilothouse structure are composed entirely of heavy, welded plates of premium-grade 5086 aluminum alloy. The 75 Endurance features a beam of 24′ which results in tremendous stability while at rest or underway. To achieve the client’s desired 25-kt. maximum speed and 22-kt. full-load cruise speed requirements, Metal Shark equipped the DSV with twin Cat C-18 diesel inboards mated to Hamilton water jets, which assure maximum maneuverability and also diver safety. Endurance vessels may also be equipped with straight-shaft inboard or pod propulsion systems.

The Endurance catamarans, such as the 75′ Endurance shown here, serve as ideal platforms for fire rescue missions, with fire pump package and multiple RF-controlled monitors. Charleston, SC: The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Dive Unit selected this 34’ Packcat for use with underwater robotics, search & recovery and protection of maritime infrastructure. A 16 kW generator provides power to ROV’s, computers and dual rooftop air conditioners. The Suzuki 350 outboards are installed with Optimus 360 joystick controls, providing station hold capabilities during ROV and dive ops. Additional outfitting includes Shox 2000 suspension seats, Webatso forced air cabin heater, tinted windows, black out window shades, davit with 12V winch, tow post, and engine guard. The Raymarine Axiom Pro navigation electronics, Flir M-Series infrared camera, Whelen lightbar and underwater lights complete the package.

Suffolk, VA: The City of Suffolk Virginia sits at the mouth of the Nansemond River at the south end of Chesapeake Bay. Outfitting on This 34’ Munson fireboat includes a Hale RSDM 1500 gallon per minute fire pump with TFT   Monsoon R/C roof Monitor and manual bow station with V. U. M. and TFT Hurricane monitor, 5 kW Onan diesel generator, as well as twin 425hp Yamaha XTO Outboard Motors with “Helm Master” joystick piloting. The wheelhouse is equipped with a roof top A/C Unit, fire control console, Airwave suspension seats, Raymarine navigation suite, FLIR camera, dual EMS benches and an “American Safe Room” NBC positive pressure filtration system.

St. Ignace, MI: Built in 1953, Enbridge Pipeline travels deep under the Straits of Mackinac for 4.5 miles, and has never experienced a leak in more than 65 years of operation. A pair of these 34’ Munson response vessels stand by in the event of a spill or fire. Each vessel is outfitted with a portable Munson “Fire Ant” self-contained skid mounted 500 GPM fire pump to allow the fire pump system to be quickly removed/installed on the main deck when needed. Additional outfitting includes port & starboard side doors, push knees, tow post, engine guard, Onan 5kw generator, Dometic air conditioner, Garmin electronics, and twin Mercury 300’s mounted on hydraulic jack plates.

Fall River, MA: Located along the shore of Mount Hope Bay at the mouth of the Taunton River, Fall River is the 10th largest city in Massachusetts. Fall River Fire Department selected this 34’ Munson fire/rescue vessel with Hale 1500 GPM fire pump and large cabin for EMS support. Additional outfitting includes push knees, tow post, engine guard, side dive doors, and 12V bow thruster. The cabin is outfitted with an EMS bench, SCBA bottle storage, head compartment, galley with sink, air conditioning and diesel cabin heater.

Jacksonville, FL: Logan Diving and Salvage has been engaged in marine salvage and commercial diving operations for over 70 years. They operate several Munson dive boats including this 34’ used for equipment transport, marine inspection services, and commercial diving operations. Portland, OR: Located on the Columbia River, the Port of Portland is Oregon’s largest and only deep draft container port. Dredging is vital for maintaining the river’s shipping channel. This 34’ Munson is used as a survey vessel for monitoring the navigation channel. Outfitting includes a walk-through cabin with seating for six, two work stations for using computers, 5 kW generator, roof top air conditioner and large thru-hull transducer well located at the LCG of the vessel.

San Juan Islands, WA: M/V Scotch Rocks is an exceptional sport utility vessel designed to go anywhere in both comfort and style. Outfitting includes an aft helm station, side boarding door, bow thruster, fish cleaning station and crab pot puller. The wheelhouse incorporates a forward trunk cabin, head compartment with hot water shower, pilot and co-pilot suspension seats, convertible settee, galley with sink, stove, refrigerator, and microwave.

San Juan Islands, WA: M/V Kittiwake is used to enjoy all that the San Juan Islands have to offer. Twin Volvo D4-260 HP diesel inboards easily provide a 25-30 knot cruise for travelling long distances. The open stern cockpit provides lots of room to fish and seat passengers. Volvo joystick controls make her easy to maneuver in tight quarters. Additional outfitting includes a side boarding door, hydraulic bow door, davit for pulling pots, Garmin radar/plotter/sounder and SiriusXM Bluetooth stereo.

Haiti: World Vision has supported long-term programs focused on community development since 1959. The organization has also provided relief supplies and assisted with the recovery from major natural disasters. Their 34’ Munson is used to support their relief efforts as well as transport personnel and supplies. Outfitting includes flip up deck seating for 12 passengers, outboard motor guard, integrated anchor storage, and a canvas enclosure to protect the pilot station.

Suquamish, WA: Puget Sound is the home of the native Suquamish people. The Suquamish Tribal Police Department uses their 34’ Munson landing craft for marine patrols, dive operations, as well as crime and narcotics investigations. Their 34’ Munson landing craft, the “Stevens Village Responder”, operates as an oil spill response vessel for the TransAlaska Pipeline. Braintree, MA: Located in the Greater Boston area, the Town of Braintree’s coastal location provides direct access to port, rail, air and highway facilities. Their 34’ Munson fire/rescue boat is outfitted with a Hale 1500 GPM fire pump with bow & stern discharges and Class B foam system. The cabin incorporates two EMS benches for transporting injured patients, head compartment, galley with refrigerator and SCBA bottle storage. Additional outfitting includes a Garmin 7610 radar/plotter/sounder with side scan sonar, Flir thermal imaging night vision camera, port & starboard dive doors, push knees, tow post and outboard motor guard.

Port Jefferson, NY: The Town of Brookhaven is located centrally on Long Island and bounded by Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. The Brookhaven Division of Harbors and Waterways uses this 34’ Munson for maintaining navigation aids, dive operations, environmental cleanup and emergency response calls. Outfitting includes bow push knees, lifting davit, tow post, port & starboard side doors and dive bottle rack. The outboard motors are installed on hydraulic jack plates for shallow water operations.

Lake Minnetonka, MN: Lake Minnetonka is a boating paradise with numerous bays, peninsulas, parks, and islands. M/V Wetatanka services a private home located on Big Island, which is only accessible by boat. Outfitting includes port & starboard boarding doors, pilot & co-pilot suspension seats, aft seat locker, cabin heater, Garmin 1040xs plotter/sounder, and triple axle trailer. The outboard motors are installed on hydraulic jack plates for shallow water operations.

Middle East: These 34’ military landing craft incorporate a 23’ long cargo deck with removable seating for 20 troops, rubber deck matting and side doors for diving operations. Additional outfitting includes two Shockwave G-Force shock mitigating seats, deck crane, tow post, tow line reel, motor guard, and lifting eyes. Electronics include a Garmin GPS, depth sounder, loud hailer, VHF and battery charger. Twin 225 HP outboards provide a 25 knot top speed with 6000 lb payload.

Seward, AK: Kenai Fjords National Park is home to some of the most breathtaking vistas in North America. M/V Halibut Cove is used to service Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge, located on remote Fox Island. The vessel is used to transport heavy equipment, vehicles, foodstuffs, and provide general support to lodge operations. Outfitting includes an elevated cabin for increased visibility, forced air cabin heater, anchor pulpit with 12V windlass, and trailer. Hydraulic jack plates allow the motors to be raised vertically for shallow water operations.

Valdez, AK: The Yukon Responder operates as an oil spill response vessel on Alaskan Rivers intersecting the TransAlaska Pipeline. The Alyeska Pipeline company operates 6 Munson boats as part of their oil spill response program. The wheelhouse features forced air heat, an enclosed head compartment with flushing head, and a Garmin Navigation Suite. Other features include raw water washdown, A fuel transfer system and a four person settee.

Lahaina, HI: No Ka Oi is a blue water fishing boat operating in the Hawaiian Islands. The offset wheelhouse is climate controlled and features plenty of seating and storage making her perfect for extended trips. A forward seat locker doubles as a fish hold and the independently controlled kicker produces the fast trolling speeds required for Hawaii fishing without running the main engines. Grey Line-X deck coating and a bow mounted table/fighting chair make the forward deck great for entertaining.

Austin, TX: The Lake Patrol Unit is responsible for patrolling Lake Travis and enforcing the Texas Water Safety Act. The Lake Patrol Unit responds to calls for service on Lake Travis and assists other law enforcement agencies, along with Austin/Travis County EMS, and the local fire departments that respond to calls on Lake Travis. Their Munson is outfitted with 2 roof top air conditioners, a 7.5 kW generator, and a Raymarine C series electronics package with 12" display.

Port Alsworth, AK: The M/V Jay Hammond is in service at the Samaritan's Purse Foundation lodge in western Alaska. The lodge offers sightseeing, fishing and kayaking opportunities free of charge to wounded military servicemen and women and their spouses. Designed to be wheelchair accessible extra wide cabin doors and fold away seating were integrated into the wheelhouse. Other features include forced air cabin heat and kayak racks on the wheelhouse roof.

Washington, DC: The FBI Underwater Search Evidence Response Team is responsible for locating evidence underwater as large as a jet engine and as small as a bullet. Computer work stations with overhead 21" monitors allow the Dive Team to analyze data during operations. Other special features include storage for 14 SCUBA bottles, Kohler 5Kw generator, and a highway legal gooseneck bunk trailer. Special padeyes were installed on the boat and trailer allowing secure transport in C130 Hercules Aircraft.

Charleston, SC: Located in Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter was the site of the first shots of the Civil War. Park staff commutes to the Fort Sumter National Monument 7 days per week. A special stairway and railings were installed on the bow door to access the monument dock ladder and the wheelhouse offers seating for 14 passengers. A short sliding door at the helm allows the captain to operate/tie up the boat from the console without crew.

Seattle, WA: The U.S. Coast Guard Icebreakers Healy, Polar Sea and Polar Star operate four "LCVP" (Landing Craft Vehicle - Personnel) as tenders and research platforms during polar exploration missions. An extensive shore power system supplies engine block heaters and AC heating units installed in the engine room and wheelhouse. This "life support" system ensures that the LCVP is always ready for immediate deployment in arctic conditions.

Vancouver, WA: David Evans & Associates is a recognized industry leader in accurate, high-precision hydrographic and geophysical surveys for environmental, engineering and scientific applications. Their new 34’ Munson trailerable survey vessel incorporates an open transom design with hydraulic A-frame and deck winch for deploying various instruments. Rotating sonar arms are installed along the port & starboard sides. A 9kW generator provides power for two Dometic rooftop air conditioners and onboard computer systems. A large survey desk was provided with two CPU racks installed on shock mitigating mounts. Additional outfitting includes a head compartment in the cuddy cabin, Garmin electronics package, and dual control stations with Volvo joystick piloting and dynamic positioning.

Seattle, WA: Whether your destination is a dock, another vessel, a dive site, or a point on shore, Aluminator Water Taxi can get you there safely and on time. Based out of Seattle the M/V Aluminator provided diver support for the Pier 91 unexploded munitions disposal project. The wheelhouse features an enclosed head compartment, full galley and seating for six for passenger transport and six standard shipping pallets can be secured to the forward deck.

Richmond, CA: When an oil tanker arrives at the Chevron Texaco refinery in Richmond it is immediately surrounded by containment boom to protect the surrounding waterway in the event of an incident. When a tanker arrives the Wharf Raider 1 deploys containment boom by backing around the ship. Special round corners were incorporated into the transom to provide more control while vessel is in reverse. A removable hydraulic boom roller assists the crew in retrieving the boom.

Sequim, WA: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge System acquire the land base necessary to protect diverse natural communities. They provide survey and boundary information of Service lands which involves the transport of heavy equipment to remote jobsites. Hydraulic transom jacks allow shallow water operation and a 6000 lb. tractor is secured to the main deck with flush tie-down pockets. The wheelhouse features forced air heat and flip up work table.

Hoonah, AK: The M/V Humdinger is an overnight sport fishing boat in Southeast Alaska. The offset wheelhouse offers an enclosed head compartment with hot water shower, convertible settee and a galley cabinet. A trunk cabin forward of the main console provides sleeping for two. Fishing equipment includes three 12v downrigger mounts and rocket launcher style rod rack. A forward helm station lets fisherman control the boat within arm's reach of the gear.

Greenville, NC: East Carolina University Marine and Coastal Science Program educates students on coastal and marine resources unique to North Carolina. The R/V Stanley Riggs features a one-ton A-frame located equipped with hydraulic positioning cylinders and a PL2 Pull Master Winch. A hydraulic winch mounted on the aft deck is capable of deploying and retrieving scientific equipment. Other features include an enclosed head compartment, Onan generator and a fly bridge control station.

Hi Ray, Now about the boat, I am very pleased with it. Weather was poor the whole time I was home but still spent 5-6 days out on it, it certainly handles well, the winds were blowing up a really good chop and the cat wasn't phased at all, in a 1-1.5m wind assisted chop was still able to cruise at 17-20 knots directly into it with no loss of comfort, so was really happy with the way it handles.

Our fast small powered catamaran has been designed to meet the needs of the most demanding customers. This little Catamaran is larger than common dive speedboat and best offer for distant destinations. It has a large dive deck where guests can sit comfortably to eat or prepare for the next dive. Nice day out snorkeling. Food was ok. I wish we were able to spend more time in the water and less time bobbing around on the anchored boat. Staff was very friendly but it was quite dangerous getting on and off the boat when we were at the dock. We had to crawl to get off. They could definitely improve the safety on that. Other than that it was a nice day out.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.
