First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

international yachting jobs

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

A millennial moved to Charleston from Nashville to get away from the bachelorette-party scene. She says she's never been happier working her new dream job and paddleboarding in her new city.

  • Kaelyn Dannenfelser said she's happier than ever after a job change and a move to Charleston from Nashville.
  • She likes the weather in Charleston but also being close to the water and feeling safe in the city.
  • Charleston has seen a ton of population growth in recent years.

Insider Today

Kaelyn Dannenfelser, 28, says that while she misses her friends in Nashville and loved being able to live there, she's definitely not moving back.

Dannenfelser told Business Insider that Nashville, where she had lived after graduating from college in 2018, could be a good city to live in during your early 20s given it has a lot of young adults, is lively, and can be a fun place.

But she said she was looking forward to finding somewhere to live that didn't have as much party tourism, noting the abundance of bachelorette and bachelor parties in Nashville .

Charleston, South Carolina, which she described as "if a hug was a place," held the answer.

Dannenfelser, who creates content on TikTok and elsewhere as Kaelyn Page, says she has never been happier. That's because of her 2023 move to Charleston and, more recently, a new job as a product-marketing manager that she described in one TikTok video as a dream.

"I was down in the dumps, and now I'm thriving," she told BI.

Dannenfelser said she loved "to be near the water and near the beach." She lives close to the Wando River.

"I knew that after I visited Charleston , this was the blend of everything that I wanted: a lot of things to do, young professionals, people in their 20s, but more of the outdoorsy activities and people looking forward to doing things other than partying," Dannenfelser said.

She has found that while there are a comparable number of activities as in Nashville, the two cities are different.

Her favorite activities in Charleston involve paddleboarding, such as on Shem Creek or at Sullivan's Island Beach, and enjoying time outside when the weather is nice.

"I love that I can walk out my front door and go to the waterfront and just go on walking trails and see all of the different nature," she said.

She's far from the only one who has moved to Charleston. According to metro-level data from the Census Bureau, Charleston-North Charleston in South Carolina saw net migration — or more people moving in than out — of 16,127 from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, a surge from the 13,016 a year prior or the 9,473 in 2021. Looking more broadly, the population in the South has been booming .

She moved to a short-term rental in August to see how she felt about being in Charleston. She then signed for a long-term apartment rental in September.

Staying in Florida for a few months during the pandemic also had an impact on her move. She said she "got the taste of living by the coast and what really influenced my move to Charleston."

Dannenfelser has found some of the pros in Charleston to be the weather, the Southern hospitality, being in a walkable location, and being in a place with a lot of history.

Related stories

"I think the culinary scene here is just amazing, and it was very similar in Nashville, but there's just a community of people in Charleston too that I think are all eager to make friendships," she said. "There's a bunch of different Charleston girls groups, and I've had a great success at making new friends here."

Given she doesn't really enjoy snow or cold temperatures, Dannenfelser has also found the mild winter a positive. Safety is another pro.

"I feel safe here even at night by myself, which I don't think I could have said that before," Dannenfelser said.

Additionally, her and her boyfriend's rent in the apartment they share with their cats is comparable to her previous rent in Nashville. Based on documentation shared with BI, rent and fees add up to nearly $2,500 a month. Dannenfelser found it was somewhat hard to find a place to live when she was searching given the demand during that time, noting there were some colleges nearby.

"I noticed that the rates in Charleston were actually more expensive then than they are now, and I think it was just from the seasonality of everyone moving here during that time," she said.

For those looking to move to Charleston like her, she suggested spending time researching as there are several islands.

"It can take you a while to get from one place to another just because everything is spread out," she said. "Definitely do your research on the areas and what you want to have the closest access to, whether that's the beach or downtown. That way, you find a place that works best for you."

The main con she has found so far is just that there can be large beach traffic at times given it's a touristy location.

A new job involving work she's passionate about also contributed to feeling happier

Dannenfelser also found a new job , suggesting in a TikTok video that she'd received an offer in August after months of looking.

She works as a product-marketing manager at LTK , which she described as a creator-guided shopping platform. She said the platform "connects creators, brands, and shoppers." Dannenfelser said she had used LTK as a content creator before getting the job. Given that familiarity and her passion for influencer marketing, she said, "it was the perfect blend of my purpose."

In her previous job in a different industry she didn't have a passion for, she said, she felt she "didn't really have the opportunity to grow," especially given layoff concerns. Dannenfelser said layoffs had "caused frequent stress of job security and also impacted my thoughts of career growth there."

Dannenfelser shared a few tips for anyone seeking a job. She said "don't be shy to be yourself," meaning to show how you can stand out.

"In my prior corporate positions, I was afraid to say, 'Hey, I'm a blogger and I do this, and hey, I like posting TikToks,' and embracing the unique qualities that I had that actually helped me pursue my dream and get me to the current place, which is where I felt I belong," she said.

She said the job hunt could be "very grueling."

"Work as hard as you would for a company on yourself," she said. "You're going to have to work your 9-to-5 job and then spend your evenings constantly applying and reaching out to hiring managers."

Joining groups could also be helpful. She said she joined product-marketing communities. This provided mentorship as well as the opportunity to prepare for interviews with people in the field, she said.

While Dannenfelser hasn't been living in Charleston or in her new role too long, she's feeling much happier so far.

"I look forward to waking up in Charleston and waking up for my job," she said. "My overall happiness has completely skyrocketed."

Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach waterfront

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns this week with more nearly 1,000 vessels on display, including super yachts from around the world.

Tickets are on sale now for the show that runs March 21-24 along the West Palm Beach waterfront.

The show, which started in 1982, has grown to a major economic engine for the community, with last year's impact estimated at $1.05 billion statewide — nearly as much as the $1.3 billion Miami International Boat Show, said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, which owns the boat show.

More: Cool front for South Florida won't be its last even with the first day of spring here

"Palm Beach is really not that far behind Miami, and Miami is the biggest in the world," Freeman said. "That was really exciting."

This year's boat show features an expanded Super Yacht Show at Palm Harbor Marina, showcasing yachts that typically stretch longer than 80 feet and have a variety of luxurious amenities that include hot tubs, crew quarters, dance floors and sun decks.

"We have more super yachts there than we ever have before, and they're even bigger," Freeman said, noting that at 236 feet, the vessel Casino Royale takes the title of largest yacht at this year's show. The title of "most expensive yacht" goes to Come Together, a 196-foot vessel priced at $59.95 million.

"Everybody, when they think about super yachts, they think about Monaco and Miami, but Palm Beach is a real player in these boat shows and the yachting world," Freeman said.

Exhibitors continue to be drawn to the Palm Beach International Boat Show by the opportunity for high sales year after year when compared with other South Florida boat shows, she said.

"I've heard from several of them, this is their favorite show to attend," Freeman said, "And that's why, because their sales are higher at Palm Beach."

The show continues to make headway in improving its sustainability efforts, she said. After reducing single-use plastics, a major change this year is the addition of water bottle refilling stations throughout the show, Freeman said.

"I think that's exciting because everybody's talking about sustainability and how we can be more sustainable," she said. "Every year, we take little steps to be more sustainable."

Freeman said she is excited for this year's AquaZone presented by Nautical Ventures. The attraction showcases some of the "yacht toys" that are new or popular on the market.

"It's so cool, because there are people actually in the water demoing yacht toys, and it's usually the latest and greatest," she said. "There's always something new every year that we've never seen before."

The Palm Beach International Boat Show also features a range of seminars, demonstrations and discussions throughout the weekend, including mental health in yachting, tips to boat to the Bahamas, safe boating to protect sea turtles and how to address active threats and piracy.

Freeman, who has children, said she loves the Kids Fishing Clinics scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with captain Don Dingman.

"Captain Don has been doing this for years, and he does a fantastic job," Freeman said. "The kids actually get to go home with a free rod and reel once the clinic is over."

The association produces the Palm Beach International Boat Show with Informa Markets' U.S. Boat Shows division.

"As we gear up for the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show, we are excited for our return to Downtown West Palm Beach to celebrate the rich history of this esteemed event," Andrew Doole, president of U.S. Boat Shows at Informa Markets, said in a news release. "Each year, we’re grateful for the warm welcome and support from the community, which truly makes this event a highlight on the calendar for both residents and visitors alike."

Informa also produces the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show happening March 21-24, at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. A Windward VIP ticket to the boat show includes admission to the art show as well.

In addition to serving as a cornerstone festival of spring in West Palm Beach, the boat show launched the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back program to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to local nonprofits, Freeman said.

The grant program had a soft launch last year and formalized the boat show's four-decade practice of giving back to the community, Freeman said.

"We're really excited about it," said Freeman, who added that the boat show team is working with the Community Foundation to manage the grant program, which they hope to grow. "That's something that's a super high priority for us."

Money raised through a portion of the boat show's ticket sales, optional add-ons and some related activities goes toward the fund.

The boat show in February announced that the first round of grants totaling $500,000 would go to 25 nonprofits that have marine-related programs or projects, including Florida Fishing Academy, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Florida Atlantic University, Inlet Grove High School, Palm Beach State College, Sea Turtle Adventures and Friends of Manatee Lagoon.

"We're hoping one day we'll be able to say that it's a million dollars," she said. "So fingers crossed. It relies on the success of the boat show and the support of the community. With that, we will continue to grow."

  • Israel’s military plans to transfer about 1.4 million Palestinian civilians trapped in southern Rafah city to “humanitarian islands” in the middle of Gaza before it launches a ground invasion.
  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the US government has yet to see an Israeli proposal to “get civilians out of harm’s way” in Rafah and ensures shelter, food and medicine.
  • Israeli attack hits a UN aid distribution centre in Rafah, killing at least one UNRWA staff member and wounding another 22.
  • At least 31,272 Palestinians have been killed and 73,024 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attack stands at 1,139 and dozens continue to be held captive.

Here’s what happened today

We will be closing this live page soon. Here’s a recap of today’s events:

  • An Israeli attack hit a UN aid distribution centre in Rafah, killing at least one UNRWA staff member and wounding more than 20 others.
  • Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari says that there are plans to push a significant amount of the more than one million displaced Palestinians in Rafah towards “humanitarian islands” in the centre of the Gaza Strip in advance of Israel’s planned offensive on the city.
  • Lebanon’s Hezbollah has said two of its fighters were killed in the Bekaa Valley after Israeli jets launched attacks on the area for a second consecutive day. Israel also killed a Hamas member in south Lebanon’s largest city Tyre when it attacked a car.
  • An unpublished report by UNRWA details the extensive use of torture against Palestinians taken prisoner by the Israeli military in Gaza, including 21 agency staff members and 15 family members of UNRWA staff, an accusation Israel has denied.
  • Israeli forces shot a Palestinian who allegedly stabbed two Israelis at a checkpoint near Jerusalem.

Report: US privately tells Israel it will accept small-scale Rafah offensive

A report from US news site Politico says that senior US officials have told their Israeli counterparts that the administration of President Biden will support the targeting of “high-value Hamas targets in and underneath Rafah”.

The report cites four unnamed US officials, who told Politico that the US wants Israel to avoid a large-scale invasion of the southern Gaza City, where some 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are sheltered after fleeing Israeli bombardment in other parts of the Strip.

“In private conversations, top administration officials have signaled to Israel that they could support a plan more akin to counterterrorism operations than all-out war, four US officials said”, the report says.

“That, the administration officials argue, would minimize civilian casualties, decimate Hamas’ ranks and avoid scenes that have led to souring public opinion on Israel’s campaign and Biden’s handling of the war.”

The US has long said that it would require a plan to protect civilians in Rafah before it supported Israel’s promised Rafah invasion. Today, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters that the US has yet to see such a plan.

Palestinians name a street after late US airman

Palestinians named a street in Jericho after Aaron Bushnell – the US airman who died after setting himself on fire to protest Israel’s war on Gaza.

Watch our video report below:

Getting aid into Gaza ‘very unpredictable’

Janti Soeripto, president of the charity Save the Children US, says it is “very unpredictable” which aid trucks can make it into Gaza and which ones are rejected.

“I saw a wooden toy box with games for children being rejected because the box was made of wood, and it had to be packed in carton boxes,” Soeripto, who was at the Rafah crossing in January, told Al Jazeera.

“Hygiene kits with soap, blankets and sanitary pads for women got rejected because there was a nail clipper in it. The list goes on.”

Moreover, Soeripto said even if trucks make it into Gaza, distribution inside was “problematic” amid the ongoing fighting in the coastal enclave.

“There’s so much rubble and destruction around that it is physically even hard to actually get the last mile in order to deliver our supplies when they make it in,” she added.

Attack on UN aid centre targeted Hamas commander: Israel military

Israel says its air strike on a UN food distribution centre in southern Gaza killed a Hamas commander after the UN said one staff member was killed and 22 others were wounded.

The Israeli military said the strike killed Mohammad Abu Hasna, whom the military described as a Hamas fighter who provided intelligence on Israeli troop positions, and was “also involved in taking control of humanitarian aid and distributing it to Hamas terrorists”.

In a statement, Hamas said Abu Hasna was a member of its police force and condemned his killing as a “cowardly assassination” meant to disrupt aid distribution.

Hamas identified another of the five killed as the head of an emergency committee for Rafah, Nidal al-Sheikh Eid.

WATCH: US woman rescued from Gaza rubble after Israeli air strike

An American woman living in Gaza was pulled from the rubble of an Israeli air strike after a two-hour operation to free her.

After she was freed, she had a message of solidarity with Palestinians facing Israel’s war. Watch the video below:

‘Who are you negotiating with if Hamas has been defeated?’

The leader of Hezbollah says Israel has already lost the war on Gaza, even if it launches a ground invasion of Rafah with the stated aim to “destroy” Hamas.

“Even if you go to Rafah, you have lost the war. Despite all the massacres, Gaza’s people will not surrender to you. The people of Gaza are still embracing the resistance,” Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech.

“Who are you negotiating with if Hamas has been defeated?” Lebanese media quoted him as saying.

“All Palestinian factions are unanimous in stopping the aggression, contrary to what is being reported that Hamas is obstructing the negotiations.”

EU Council president calls for pause in Gaza fighting

Charles Michel says a humanitarian pause is urgently needed, as well as the release of all captives.

“The EU will continue to insist on increasing urgently [needed] humanitarian aid, protection of all civilians and respect of international humanitarian law,” he said in a post on X.

Israel’s war on Gaza, raging since October 7, has caused mass civilian deaths, reduced vast areas to a rubble-strewn wasteland and sparked warnings of looming famine in the Palestinian territory of 2.3 million people.

Aid groups provide new evidence of Israel attack on staff members

Medical Aid for Palestinians and the International Rescue Committee provided new details of an Israeli air strike on a residential compound housing humanitarian workers and their families.

The January attack wounded several team members despite coordinates being shared with the Israeli military, which offered six different explanations that “ have not provided clarity” as to why it happened, a statement said.

“The variety of responses highlights a continued lack of transparency regarding what occurred. It is clear from this experience the Israeli military and government are either unable or unwilling to properly investigate this serious incident,” the groups said.

The statement called on Israel’s allies, including the US and UK, to launch “a full, independent and timebound investigation into the 18 January incident – and all reported attacks on deconflicted facilities and personnel”.

“As current suppliers of arms and munitions to Israel, governments such as the UK and the US have a particular responsibility to hold Israel accountable for this and other attacks on aid workers and civilians.”

Israeli army attacks Hezbollah

On X, the Israeli army says it recently attacked “military buildings used by the terrorist organization Hezbollah” inside Lebanese territory.

It claimed attacks on the areas of Mis al-Jabal and Ita al-Sha’ab in southern Lebanon. Additionally, the army said it carried out artillery attacks on the Wadi Hamool area.

Earlier in the day, Israel attacked a car in Tyre, south Lebanon’s largest city, killing two, including Hadi Mustafa, a Hamas member based in the Rashidieh Palestinian refugee camp near Tyre.

Criticism of Israel’s war and occupation is not anti-Semitism

Maximilian Hess

Anti-Semitism, its prevalent nature, and the shame and guilt for the Holocaust that sit at the heart of Germany’s memory culture have indelibly shaped my life.

For many of Israel’s most ardent supporters, there is no space in the debate for those who criticise Israel’s actions. Nowhere is this more clear than in Germany, where German Jews, many of them Israelis, make up a disproportionate percentage of those detained for protesting against Tel Aviv’s warpath.

Violence begets violence. “Never again” must mean never again by anyone, against anyone.

Aid seekers injured by Israeli bullets in Gaza City

Al Jazeera’s correspondent reports that nine Palestinians awaiting aid distribution at the Kuwaiti roundabout in southern Gaza City were wounded by Israeli forces.

This roundabout has been the site of several attacks on aid seekers by Israel in recent weeks.

We will bring you updates on this attack as information comes in.

Israeli MPs approve revised wartime budget

Israel’s parliament has adopted a revised budget for 2024 allowing for more spending to finance the war against Hamas, now in its sixth month.

The new budget passed by a vote of 62 lawmakers to 55.

It modifies the budget passed in May 2023, increasing the spending limit by 70.4 billion shekels ($19.4bn), or more than 14 percent, according to a statement from Israel’s legislature, the Knesset.

Of that amount, 55 billion shekels ($15.1bn) could be allocated to the military and 15.5 billion ($4.1bn) could go “to finance civilian needs”, the statement said.

WATCH: How does US intelligence disagree with Israel on Gaza?

In its annual report, the US intelligence community says Hamas cannot be destroyed.

The group’s elimination is a core aim of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s merciless onslaught in Gaza.

So why is the US continuing to arm Israel to fight a war it doesn’t believe can be won?

EU, 5 other nations call on Israel to open additional crossings to Gaza

The European Union and five other countries in a joint statement called on Israel to open additional crossings besides the Cyprus maritime corridor so more aid can reach the coastal enclave.

“The ministers agreed there is no meaningful substitute to land routes via Egypt and Jordan and entry points from Israel into Gaza for aid delivery at scale,” it said, following a virtual ministerial meeting.

“The ministers underscored the need for Israel to open additional crossings so more aid can reach Gaza, including the north, and to ease overall customs restrictions to facilitate an increased flow of life-saving humanitarian assistance.”

Blinken comments on Israeli attack on UNRWA facility

In his news conference, the US secretary of state has told reporters that the US offers its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who “apparently” were killed in today’s bombing of an aid distribution facility operated by the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees.

According to UNRWA, the attack killed at least one of its staff members and injured an additional 22 other people.

Blinken admitted that he did not know “the facts” of the incident, but said that he spoke to the Israeli army about it, which told him that they were investigating.

He said that the incident reinforces “the imperative of having much better and much more consistent deconfliction,” between humanitarian workers and the Israeli army, adding that the people working to distribute desperately needed humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip must “be able to do their jobs with as much security and as much confidence as possible”.

The Israeli military, the Israeli government, have a responsibility to make sure that humanitarian work can be carried out,” he continued, including not striking “clearly marked” humanitarian facilities.

Israeli attacks on aid trucks and Palestinians seeking the aid carried by those trucks have been frequent over the last several weeks, including in northern Gaza, which is on the verge of famine.

Israeli military says it will push Rafah’s civilians to ‘humanitarian islands’

Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari says that there are plans to push a significant amount of the more than one million displaced Palestinians in Rafah toward “humanitarian islands” in the centre of the Gaza Strip in advance of its planned offensive on the city.

“We need to make sure that 1.4 million people or at least a significant amount of the 1.4 million will move. Where? To humanitarian islands that we will create with the international community,” Hagari told reporters at a briefing.

Hagari said those islands would provide temporary housing, food, water and other necessities to evacuated Palestinians. He did not say when Rafah’s evacuation would occur, nor when the Rafah offensive would begin, saying that Israel wanted the timing to be right operationally and to be coordinated with neighbouring Egypt, which has said it does not want an influx of displaced Palestinians crossing its border.

The US has frequently said that it will not support an Israeli invasion of Rafah without a clear plan to protect civilians there.

During its war on Gaza, Israel has frequently designated areas and corridors of movement for civilians as “ safe zones ” before bombing them, killing many.

Blinken says Israel has still hasn’t presented a plan to protect civilians in Rafah

The US government has been consistently saying that it would not support Israel’s promised invasion of Rafah without a “clear” plan from the Israeli government to protect the more than one million displaced Palestinians that are currently sheltering there.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that the US government has “not seen such a plan” as of yet.

“We need to see a plan that will get civilians out of harm’s way if there is to be a military operation, and not only get’s them out of harm’s way, but ensures that they have shelter, food and medicine,” he said.

Protecting civilians must be ‘priority’ for Israel: US

Protecting and aiding civilians must be “job number one” for Israel in the war-battered Gaza Strip, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says.

“We look to the government of Israel to make sure this is a priority. Protecting civilians, getting people assistance they need, that has to be job number one, even as they do what is necessary to defend the country to deal with the threat posed by Hamas,” he told reporters.

US President Joe Biden has made contradictory statements about how he intends to approach mounting international concerns over Israel’s military actions.

On Saturday, he said an invasion of the southern city of Rafah would be a “red line” for Israel not to cross. Still, he said he would never “leave Israel” or “cut off all weapons” for the US ally.

‘Deep distress’ over Gaza war to sour St Patrick’s Day at White House

The annual White House celebration of St Patrick’s Day will be less festive because of Irish anger over US support for Israel’s attack on Gaza.

The SDLP, Northern Ireland’s smaller nationalist party, said it isn’t sending any representatives to Washington, DC, for Friday’s event.

“The White House St Patrick’s Day event is a party. We have taken the principled position that we won’t be attending that party,” said Claire Hanna, an SDLP lawmaker.

“This is about the deep distress that we and our constituents feel practically every hour of the day about what’s going on in Gaza, and our attempt to use whatever opportunities we have — parliamentary and otherwise — to contribute and create international momentum to end this,” the Washington Post quoted Hanna as saying.

Dutch PM Rutte calls on Netanyahu to step up humanitarian aid into Gaza

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte urged his Israeli counterpart to “drastically reduce the level of force” unleashed on the coastal enclave.

“Further escalation must be prevented and an Israeli offensive in Rafah would cause a humanitarian disaster,” he added.

‘Stop Arming Israel’ protesters block San Francisco airport in US

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters have shut down part of the San Francisco International Airport to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the end of all US military assistance to Israel.

Demonstrators chanted “Free, free Palestine” while holding a banner that read “Stop Arming Israel” as they blocked access to security gates inside the international terminal in northern California.

Protesters also halted traffic outside the departures entrance, blocking all lanes while marching in a circle with Palestinian flags.

Israel’s war on Gaza has sparked mass demonstrations in major cities across the United States and led to repeated interruptions at US President Joe Biden’s campaign events.

MSF condemns last months’ Jenin hospital attacks

The international medical charity Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) says Israel’s attack was just the “latest act of appalling violence” at the facility.

“In the last months, our team has witnessed bullets and tear gas grenades being fired at the facility, a minor being killed, ambulances being obstructed, and healthcare professionals being targeted,” Samuel Johann, MSF project coordinator in Jenin, said in a series of posts on X.

“Shooting people in a hospital, or any act of violence in a healthcare facility, is completely unacceptable. We unequivocally condemn the continued attacks on healthcare facilities.”

South Africa says citizens fighting with Israeli forces in Gaza will be arrested

South Africa’s foreign minister has said that any of her country’s citizens who fight with the Israeli armed forces in Gaza will be arrested when they return home.

Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor made the comments earlier this week at a Palestinian solidarity event attended by officials from South Africa’s governing African National Congress Party.

“I have already issued a statement alerting those who are South African and are fighting alongside or in the [Israeli military]: We are ready. When you come home, we are going to arrest you,” Pandor said, to rapturous applause from the audience.

She also encouraged people to protest outside the embassies of what she called the “five primary supporters” of Israel and its military action in Gaza.

In December, the foreign ministry said that the South African government was concerned that some of its citizens or permanent residents had joined the Israeli military to fight in Gaza.

Those with dual South African-Israeli citizenship could be stripped of their South African citizenship, the foreign ministry said.

1 in 3 companies are ditching college degree requirements for salaried jobs

thumbnail

It's becoming easier to get a corporate job without a college degree : 1 in 3 companies say they no longer list educational requirements on their salaried job postings, according to Payscale's latest compensation best practices report .

Still, it's most common for companies, 41%, to say college degree requirements depend on the job, while a minority, 22%, say all of their jobs have a degree as a requirement. Payscale's analysis surveyed more than 5,700 business leaders and HR pros in late 2023.

As companies deprioritize college degree requirements, they're turning their attention to hiring candidates with the right skillsets, Ruth Thomas, a pay equity strategist with PayScale, said during a briefing with reporters.

The move could benefit the roughly 62% of U.S. workers who don't have a degree, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

While no-degree hiring doesn't apply to jobs that never required a degree, or professions like doctors or lawyers, it could have a big impact on hiring for middle-tier jobs like construction managers, sales supervisors, web developers, cybersecurity and IT help desk specialists, CNBC reports .

Walmart, the country's largest private employer, is one company that stands out for its broad efforts to remove education requirements on jobs. The company with 1.6 million employees said it was " rewriting job descriptions for our campus (headquarters) jobs to factor in the skills people possess, alongside any degrees they hold," in a  corporate blog post  in late September. "To be considered for the job, you can have a related college degree or possess the skills needed for the job, whether through previous experience or other forms of learning."

Other major employers, particularly in tech, have moved toward skills-based hiring in recent years, including Google, IBM, Tesla, GM and Accenture.

But removing education requirements doesn't automatically lead to more equitable hiring among people without degrees. Recent research from Burning Glass Institute and Harvard Business School shows candidates without degrees aren't getting as many good job offers as those with degrees.

"Unfortunately, what we found is for the most part, employers are still hiring the same people they were before," Matt Sigelman, president of the Burning Glass Institute, told CNBC .

"Many organizations still have a lot left to do in terms of categorizing skills in their organizations so that we can develop full end-to-end skills-based pay strategies," Thomas says.

Overall, business leaders say compensation is their top challenge of 2024, with half saying it's a high-priority investment area in the coming year, closely followed by recruitment and retention.

Israel and hamas dig in as international pressure builds for a cease-fire in gaza.

international yachting jobs

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on today vowed to press ahead with Israel’s offensive and blasted a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for a pause in the fighting, saying it had emboldened Hamas to reject a separate proposal for a cease-fire and hostage release.

As the war in Gaza grinds through a sixth month, each side has publicly insisted that its own idea of victory is in reach and rejected international efforts to stem the bloodshed.

Netanyahu has said Israel can achieve its aims of dismantling Hamas and returning scores of hostages if it expands its ground offensive to the southern city of Rafah, where over half of Gaza’s population has sought refuge, many in crowded tent camps.

Hamas has said it will hold onto the hostages until Israel agrees to a more permanent cease-fire, withdraws its forces from Gaza and releases hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including top militants. It said late Monday that it has rejected a recent proposal that fell short of those demands — which, if fulfilled, would allow it to claim an extremely costly victory.

Netanyahu said in a statement that the announcement “proved clearly that Hamas is not interested in continuing negotiations toward a deal and served as unfortunate testimony to the damage of the Security Council decision.”

“Israel will not surrender to Hamas’ delusional demands and will continue to act to achieve all the goals of the war: releasing all the hostages, destroying Hamas’ military and governing capabilities and ensuring that Gaza will never again be a threat to Israel.”

The war has killed over 32,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its tally but says women and children make up about two-thirds of those killed. The fighting has left much of the Gaza Strip in ruins, displaced most its residents and driven a third of its population of 2.3 million to the brink of famine.

An Israeli strike late Monday on a residential building in Rafah where three displaced families were sheltering killed at least 16 people, including nine children and four women, according to hospital records and relatives of the deceased. An Associated Press reporter saw the bodies arrive at a hospital.

On Monday, the Security Council finally managed to pass a resolution calling for a cease-fire as the United States abstained instead of vetoing the measure, angering Israel in a major escalation of tensions between the two close allies. The resolution calls for the release of all hostages held in Gaza but did not condition the cease-fire on it.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz told Army Radio today that the resolution had emboldened Hamas by signaling that international pressure would end the war without it having to make any concessions.

“The message delivered to Hamas yesterday … is that you don’t have to hurry,” Katz said.

The war began on Oct. 7, when Hamas-led militants stormed across the border and attacked communities in southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250 others. It is still believed to be holding about 100 hostages and the remains of 30 others, after most of the rest were freed in November in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

The United States, Qatar and Egypt have spent several weeks trying to negotiate another cease-fire and hostage release, but those efforts appeared to have stalled.

Hamas said late Monday that Israel has not responded to its core demands of a “comprehensive cease-fire, an (Israeli) withdrawal from the Strip, the return of displaced people and a real prisoner exchange.”

Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry of Qatar, which is currently hosting the talks, told reporters that the negotiations were still ongoing, without providing details.

Hamas has previously proposed a phased process in which it would release all the remaining hostages in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the opening of its borders for aid and reconstruction, and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including top militants serving life sentences.

Netanyahu has vowed to resume Israel’s offensive after any hostage release and keep fighting until Hamas is destroyed, saying it’s the only way to prevent a repeat of the Oct. 7 attack. But he has provided few details about what would follow any such victory and has largely rejected a postwar vision outlined by the U.S.

That approach has brought him into increasingly open conflict with President Joe Biden’s administration, which has expressed mounting concern over civilian casualties while supplying Israel with crucial military aid and backing Israel’s aim of destroying Hamas. The U.S. had vetoed previous U.N. resolutions calling for a cease-fire.

The White House has urged Israel not to undertake a major ground operation in Rafah, warning that it could cause a humanitarian catastrophe. The administration was set to brief visiting Israeli officials on an alternative approach, but Netanyahu called off their visit in response to the U.S. abstention at the U.N.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is in Washington on a separate trip, however, and is to meet with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin today.
