Discover the best yacht clubs in the world

Published 15 November 2023

Renowned for their historic sailing traditions, stunning locations and exclusive membership, the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world offer a unique social hub for like-minded yachting enthusiasts to enjoy. As social venues go, the worlds these clubs inhabit have the upper hand, particularly during some of their regattas. Burgess takes a look behind the scenes at some of the best yacht clubs in the world.

What is a yacht club: history.

Founded in 1720, the Royal Cork Yacht Club was a forerunner and became the first formally established yacht club in the world. Before this time, yachts were typically owned by royalty, but as non-royals began to purchase or build their own yachts to sail and race, clubs began to form to aid in the organisation of such races and regattas.

best yacht clubs in the world

Then, and now, few institutions compete with the exclusivity and prestige of a yacht club. Whether founded by a prince, boasting a rich history and tradition, or as a recent addition to the most highly ranked yacht clubs in the world, being an esteemed member of any of these yacht clubs is the pinnacle of yachting for many. The majority of the clubhouses are located in iconic seaside settings (or in major cities, as is the case for the New York Yacht Club) and have world-class amenities. Upholding sailing traditions to this day, every yacht club will organise regattas and racing, and a few have also become training centres for young sailors.

best yacht clubs in the world

Members can also benefit from club facilities which can include anything from grand and stately rooms for entertaining and socialising in, to swimming pools, concierge services, high-end restaurants, and, most importantly, a yachting community to socialise and network with. With all this typically comes a high joining and membership fee and a rigorous application process, including recommendations and meticulous screening, meaning that the resulting membership pool are a close-knit community of generally like-minded people.

What to wear to a yacht club?

Remaining traditional, most yacht clubs have specific guidelines for dress code inside their clubs. Depending on the time of day or event, the dress code for men is usually collared shirts or polos rather than t-shirts, with trousers rather than shorts and closed-toe shoes. Ties are not usually required for lunch, and, given the locations of most of the clubs, light colours and light fabrics are also advisable.

best yacht clubs in the world

For ladies, tops should not be strappy or too casual, while skirts or dresses should be a suitable length. Trousers for ladies are also acceptable at most clubs, while footwear of any style, other than trainers or flip flops, are allowed. Hats of any sort are usually also forbidden inside.

The best yacht clubs in the world

There are thousands of yacht clubs in the world but only a handful are considered to be elite . Whether famed for their historic sailing traditions, their sumptuous settings or their excellent facilities, one thing all of our selected yacht clubs have in common is their exclusive and respected membership.

The Royal Yacht Squadron

Not quite the world’s oldest club, but one of the most famous of the historic ones, the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) was established in 1815. Originally set up as a local club by 42 original members with an interest in yachting, its royal association began just two years after its founding when the Prince Regent, later King George IV, became a member. Later on, when he acceded to become King, it was then renamed the Royal Yacht Squadron and its clubhouse is Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight, UK.

best yacht clubs in the world

The club has always attracted famous and illustrious members. As well as George IV, Nelson’s Captain at Trafalgar Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy was a founder member, and later the explorer Robert Falcon Scott (Scott of the Antarctic). These famous members and royal associations secured its reputation as one of the most influential yachting establishments. It was RYS’s commodore who originally challenged the New York Yacht Club and their racing yacht America to a round-the-island race in 1851 – a contest now known as the America’s Cup (see NYYC below). The RYS also initiated the regatta racing rule which mandates racing yachts to give way to the vessel on the starboard tack (a rule which must have saved countless accidents since its inception).

best yacht clubs in the world

Today the club hosts several regattas, the most famous of which is Cowes Week. There are just over 500 members of the Royal Yacht Squadron, 75 of whom are Naval members and 60 of whom are Honorary members.  Only British yacht club members are permitted to fly the White Ensign on their yachts – a unique privilege for Squadron members only those dates back to 1829 when it was gifted to them by King William, who was himself a member. Membership to the club is by recommendation from existing members and subject to a secret ballot.

New York Yacht Club

The New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was established in 1844 by John Cox Stevens. He was the owner of the schooner America, with which he triumphed against a fleet of British yachts in 1851 in what became the prequel to the America’s Cup race named after his vessel. Between 1857 and 1983 the NYYC then successfully defended the cup a further 25 times, before eventually losing it to the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s yacht AUSTRALIA II. This was and still is the longest winning streak (in terms of years) in any sport.

best yacht clubs in the world

From transatlantic victories to its famous ‘cruises’, the club has been a founder of many of yachting’s great firsts. Since losing the cup to Australia in 1983, the club has welcomed younger sailors to its two clubhouses: one in a stunning Beaux-Arts building in Manhattan and the other in a grander waterfront location in Newport, Rhode Island.  The former is a jacket and tie establishment, and the latter provides members with access to the ideal sailing conditions promised by the deep waters around Rhode Island. Today, the club’s burgee, which only club members are permitted to fly, is recognised the yachting world over.

Yacht Club de Monaco

Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the Yacht Club de Monaco is a relatively new entrant to the scene which nevertheless holds a unique position in international yachting. Created from the old Société des Regates, its aim was to promote yachting within the Principality, and judging by the number of yachts which populate Monaco’s Port Hercule it has certainly succeeded. The Club is twinned with several clubs, including two of the world’s leading yacht clubs – the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona. Members are therefore able to participate in sporting activities held between clubs and access each other’s clubhouse and facilities.

best yacht clubs in the world

The Yacht Club de Monaco’s major focus is racing, but the social scene is not far behind. This is a club with such an exclusive members’ list that although it is the place to be seen, the members remain discreet. His Royal Highness, Prince Sovereign Albert II, has been Club President since 1984 and is also responsible for the clubhouse that opened in 2014.

Located at the heart of the Principality overlooking Port Hercules, the futuristic-styled Norman Foster designed building resembles a yacht with a series of deck-like terraces, all offering spectacular views over the Mediterranean. A fantastic venue for socialising and entertaining with all manner of events for the yachting community, including exclusive parties and events throughout the Monaco Yacht Show , the clubhouse is also home to the 1909 Restaurant, the Sunrise Restaurant, the Aquarama Riva Bar, Observatory Deck, and the Ballroom. Members also have access to a large outdoor swimming pool and lounge deck area.

best yacht clubs in the world

Membership is extremely limited and prospective candidates are rigorously vetted. Applications must be supported by two existing members and if successful, they are welcomed with a party and dinner in their honour. Given its exclusive nature, a formal dress code for day and evening wear is mandatory for all.

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

Founded in 1967 by HH the Aga Khan, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) is one of the leading yacht clubs in the Mediterranean. Amongst the world’s most eminent yachting destinations, Sardinia’s Porto Cervo and the surrounding waters are the club’s main draw. This coastline provides ideal conditions for sailing and as a result the club hosts some of the world’s most prestigious regattas, including the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the Rolex Swan Cup, and the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta.

best yacht clubs in the world

Aside from its impressive racing calendar, the YCCS has become one of the most luxurious locations for superyachts throughout the summer season. With an impressive social scene, the clubhouse literally buzzes with high-profile members stepping ashore from their yachts to enjoy its many amenities. The clubhouse itself also offers a panoramic pool terrace, al fresco dining, a wellness centre and spa, and a member’s lounge and bar, while also located within walking distance is the Pevero Golf Club and Cala Granu Beach.

best yacht clubs in the world

Membership is strict, with a new member having to be proposed by two current members. A Club Uniform is available for YCCS members and must be worn if participating in certain events when members are officially representing the Club. Evening attire also requires the typical clubhouse attire, with long trousers and a shirt (no t-shirts) and closed shoes for men, while ladies must wear a suitable length skirt or trousers.  Along with the Yacht Club de Monaco, the YCCS is twinned with the prestigious New York Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron.

St Francis Yacht Club

The St Francis Yacht Club (StFYC) is one of the world’s most prestigious sailing clubs. It is also one of the oldest American yacht clubs, having been founded in 1927 when a few members from the San Francisco Yacht Club decided to move their clubhouse from Sausalito to Belvedere.

Today, the Mediterranean Revival-style clubhouse affords dazzling views over the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the infamous Alcatraz. More importantly, it provides access to some of the most spectacular sailing waters in the world, with berthing on the shores of San Francisco Bay and access to the private Tinsley Island in the Sacramento Delta.

best yacht clubs in the world

St Francis Yacht Club members enjoy a busy schedule of racing events, including the Rolex Big Boat Series. The Club also hosts a series of social events within its clubhouse dining and multiple event spaces. The dress code for social engagements is formal, with clubhouse attire post 6pm requiring jackets for men and the equivalent evening dress for ladies. Membership to the club is by invitation only, with nominations sponsored by between one and three existing members based on the level of membership required.

Dubai Marina Yacht Club

It may not hold the historic prestige of the other yacht clubs featured here, but what the Dubai Marina Yacht Club lacks in history it certainly makes up for in facilities and luxury. Located in the heart of New Dubai, the Club is one of the largest yacht clubs in the world, encompassing five marinas located along the Persian Gulf coastline. Enveloped by soaring skyscrapers on either side, the Club House Marina lies at the heart of the Dubai Marina Yacht Club, while the West Bay Marina is perfectly located for ease of access to the sea.

best yacht clubs in the world

East Marina and the Marina Promenade offer an array of restaurants and shopping arcades, and the Marina Mall is the entertainment and retail hub. Member lounges are spread across the facility, including the Aquara Lounge and the Yots Sports lounge.  Amenities across all marinas include several member lounges and a 24/7 concierge service. Being a Dubai Marina Yacht Club member allows for berthing perks, a 24/7 concierge service, access to water taxis, pools, and gyms, and invites to yachting events dedicated to showcasing the region’s geography and culture.

Grand Bahama Yacht Club

With its easily navigated deep-water marina on the island of Grand Bahama, the Grand Bahama Yacht Club in Freeport is one of the most prominent marinas in the Caribbean. Welcoming large yachts to its convenient location just to the north of The Bahamas archipelago, the Club is a designated Bahamas Port of Entry and often the first port-of-call in The Bahamas for yachts coming from Florida.

best yacht clubs in the world

Membership of the Grand Bahama Yacht Club includes access to the turn-of-the-century modern clubhouse with its European architecture and lush tropical landscaping. It also has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and 24/7 security.

Cruising Yacht Club of Australia

Founded in 1944, The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) has become Australia’s most prestigious yacht club. Host to the famous Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the club has world-class facilities for both the sailing elite and its members, who also enjoy access to the club’s comprehensive sailing programme.

best yacht clubs in the world

Nestled along the Rushcutters Bay foreshore, the modern clubhouse enjoys stunning harbour views, a large 213-berth marina, function rooms, and other clubhouse amenities including a bar and lounge. Membership to the CYCA is on a referral basis.

Barbados Yacht Club

The Barbados Yacht Club is located on Carlisle Bay and as such it provides access to stunning beaches and ideal sailing conditions that the Caribbean is known for. From the beach bar to tennis to a host of sailing programmes, members benefit from a wide array of both sailing and social activities.

best yacht clubs in the world

Like many of the other clubs in this list, the Barbados Yacht Club hosts a variety of regattas, including the Mount Gay Rum Barbados Regatta along with recreational activities like tennis and sailing programmes, while the clubhouse also has a restaurant and bar for socialising. Membership to the Barbados Yacht Club is through a monthly ballot and is based on sailing performance.

The World’s Most Beautiful Yacht Clubs

These waterfront landmarks define classic maritime style—and attract some of the most magnificent ships at sea.

Beautiful yacht clubs in New England

The glamour of these yacht clubs is matched only by their intriguing histories. From Sardinia to Singapore, Newport to the Bahamas, these high-style sailing outposts carry on the traditions of their founders (with the oldest dating back to the mid-19th century). Not a member? Here's a peek at the super exclusive spots.

New York Yacht Club

New York Yacht Club Model Room

New York Yacht Club—Harbour Court

New York Yacht Club

The New York Yacht Club acquired Harbour Court in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1987. The grand, Norman-style mansion was built in 1906 and sits on eight acres overlooking Brenton's Cove. The connection between the New York Yacht Club and Newport dates back to the club's founding in the mid-1800s, when the NYYC founders sailed from the Battery to Newport on their inaugural summer cruise.

Royal Yacht Squadron

Black tie and boat shoes are de rigueur for the happy few who crack the ranks of the ultra-exclusive, 200-year-old Royal Yacht Squadron , headquartered in a 16th-century castle in England's Isle of Wight. Today, it’s best known as the heart of the legendary Cowes Week regatta , when thousands of sailors and revelers alike gather to await the firing of the club’s brass cannons.

Detroit Yacht Club

In its heyday, Dodges and Fords were among the tony patrons of this 1920s Mediterranean Revival building. They danced in the grand timbered ballroom and did laps in the indoor pool, which was lined with iridescent, Detroit-made Pewabic Pottery tiles. But as the fortunes of the city declined, so, too, did membership and maintenance at the Detroit Yacht Club . But a turnaround began in 2011, returning much of the building’s original grandeur, as well as a younger, more diverse membership, many of whom live in what is now an equally resurgent downtown Detroit.

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

American architect Peter Marino redesigned this glamorous Italian outpost in the early 2000s, turning it into a deeply seductive hub in keeping with the yachts that fill the marina every summer. But at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda , it’s not all Cristal and caviar. In 2017, alarmed by the ubiquity of pollutants in local waters, club leaders launched a strict code of conduct for eliminating single-use plastics and reducing energy consumption.

Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

Winner of a Singapore Institute of Architects Architectural Design Award for its modern incarnation (a former clubhouse was lost to a massive container terminal), Asia’s oldest yacht club is replete with cultural pride of place. Republic of Singapore Yacht Club is now marked by a soaring, serrated roofline that pays homage to the traditional buildings of the Minangkabau, an Indonesian ethnic group.

Epping Forest Yacht & Country Club

This 58-acre Jacksonville, Florida, estate was built in 1926 by chemicals pioneer Alfred I. duPont and his wife, Jessie Ball duPont. Located on the widest point of the St. John’s River and shaded by grand oak trees, the mansion was built as a sprawling home base for duPont’s favorite pastime, yachting (on his beloved Nenemoosha ), and quickly became an illustrious meeting place for fellow industrial giants and heads of state of the day, including the Vanderbilts, Carnegies, and the Goulds. The building blends Gothic and Baroque architectural elements with a sprawling Spanish Renaissance form. Today, the romantic mansion has been completely restored and serves as home to the Epping Forest Yacht & Country Club .

Lyford Cay Club

Slim Aarons photographed the Lyford Cay Club in 1975, and the uber-exclusive Bahamian landmark hasn't lost an ounce of its allure since. Past the 74-slip yacht harbor and white-sand beaches is an impeccably decorated clubhouse famously overhauled in the early 2000s by Tom Scheerer. The nearly 20-foot tall painted palms in the drawing room (seen at left) have become iconic symbols of the billionaires' outpost. For more photos, check out this story published by Town & Country .

Yacht Club de Monaco

This French Riviera hotspot is as much a maritime playground as it is a proper yacht club. Reimagined by architects Foster + Partners in 2014, Yacht Club de Monaco is designed to resemble a ship, with "decks" offering expansive views of the Mediterranean and the Grand Prix race track. Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III of Monaco, it is now presided over by Prince Albert.

The best superyacht beach clubs in the world

Tatiana's multi-level beach club.

Impressive and luxurious, the 80 metre Tatiana was delivered in 2021 by Bilgin Yachts and features a multi-level beach club spanning a total of 110-square metres. One of the yacht’s main attractions, the beach club is directly connected to the main saloon via a dramatic staircase and features two pools. They sit one above the other, one on the upper level and the other on the lower deck right next to the water’s edge.

More about this yacht

Aquijo's sailing yacht beach club.

It’s not often that you find a beach club on a sailing yacht, but then again Aquijo is no ordinary sailing yacht. As the world’s largest ketch , she has more than enough room to accommodate a spacious beach club, complete with a hammam, sauna and a spectacular spa pool that is illuminated by a large skylight. As if all that wasn’t impressive enough, the watertight aft doors mean that Aquijo ’s beach club can still be used when she’s sailing along at her brisk top speed of 20 knots.

Dream's 42 square metre dive centre.

A superyacht as big as the breathtaking 106.5 metre Dream needs a beach club to match. In fact, having easy access to the sea for swimming, diving and watersports was one of the key demands of owner George J Prokopiou during the yacht's extensive conversion. The result is no usual beach club. As well as a dive store and space to keep rugged tenders and the overhead cranes to launch them, there is a 42-square-metre, 12-tonne stern door that opens on to the sea.

Calypso's welcoming beach club

A superyacht beach club is more than the place to swim and splash around. Offering bars, lounges and spa access, the best superyacht beach clubs are all-round waterfront entertaining venues that are a must-have on any luxury yacht.

First impressions are everything. And stepping onto the larger-than-average 15 square metre beach club on board the 36 metre Mulder ThirtySix superyacht Calypso is sure to achieve just that . Designed to be welcoming, the beach club is perfectly equipped to relieve the weary traveller with a basin and towels to freshen up as soon as you come on board.

O'Ptasia's all-weather beach club

At 85 metres O'Ptasia is certainly spectacular, but there's more to her than sheer size. Her all-weather beach club will impress even the most discerning charter guests, with discreet sliding glass doors that keep the temperature of the beach club cool, even on a hot day. Inside, there's a bar fitted with a juicer for freshly squeezed orange juice and smoothies served to your sunbed, as well as a white marble steam room inspired by Turkish hammams. Plus,  O'Ptasia 's generous swim platform has a additional section that raises and lowers for easy access to the sea.

Go's open plan beach club.

With a bright turquoise hull, 77 metre Go certainly stands out from the crowd. Launched in 2018, this flagship from Turquoise Yachts features a 162 metre square beach club that opens on three sides to provide guests direct access to the sea. Inside, there's a onyx bar, 100 inch TV, massage room and steam room. Locating the tender garage amidships allowed for such a vast area, which was a real selling point for the owner.

Harmony's technical store-turned-beach club

A refit in 2017 added three metres to the length Amels ' 55 metre Harmony , allowing her owners to turn a tired technical store into a luxurious teak-clad beach club. The space is a Scandinavian-feeling haven, complete with a wet bar and massage area, plus hammam, shower and dive store. The new stern gives a grand first impression for those stepping off tenders, with a pair of illuminated staircases sweeping down from the main deck. Plus, a lowerable swim platform with steps that descend into the water lets swimmers take a carefree dive into the sea and climb back on board easily.

Aquila's refitted beach club

The largest British refit project to date, Aquila (ex- Cakewalk ) was completely updated and relaunched at Pendennis in 2016. Her beach club was one of the key areas to receive a makeover, with a skylight added to bring more light into this waterside chill-out spot. What's more, the tender garage access was moved to the starboard stairwell, meaning that crewmembers no longer have to interrupt proceedings when the time comes to launch her array of superyacht water toys .

Just J’s beach club gym

For the 61 metre Hakvoort flagship Just J’s , the owner specified a superyacht gym in the beach club, which allows for a rigorous workout right next to the water. Moving forward, the side-loading tender garage can be set up for post-gym relaxation, with inflatable sofas and fold-out panels creating a perfect chillout spot.

Seanna's seaside lounge beach club

The Benetti superyacht Seanna has a chic aft beach club. With a couch and a large swim platform, it offers easy access to the water and a comfortable place to unwind. The cosy custom Benetti yacht Seanna was designed for family life at sea , and you could certainly see this being an ideal spot for the family to splash around – the kids could play in full view of the adults, lounging on the sofa with refreshment in hand.

Seanna also has one of the best superyacht gyms , with her gym also set down on the water level.

Set Sail: 10 Most Exclusive Yacht Clubs In The World

BY Pilar Gonzalez

These exclusive clubs offer a prestigious sailing experience unlike any other with stunning locations and luxury five-star amenities .

Besides fostering the art of yachting, yacht racing, and other recreational sea activities, yacht clubs serve another important purpose—to build a strong, close-knit community. This is especially true for more prestigious clubs that only offer memberships to select individuals.

High-end yacht clubs are exclusive precisely because of their hefty initiation fees and rigorous application processes. Some even go as far as to ask applicants to present recommendation forms from existing members or undergo meticulous screening. While this may seem a bit over the top, many believe that it’s well worth the investment.

After all, these clubs offer premium amenities set in breathtaking seaside locations, and also function as social hubs for those looking to expand their network. Some even host grand galas and fundraising events for members to support their communities.

While there’s a wide assortment of elite clubs out there, some truly stand out from the rest. Without further ado, below are 10 of the most highly-ranked yacht clubs in the world:

Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club

The Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club often finds itself at the very top of many lists, and for good reason. It’s one of the most exclusive clubs in the world, given its idyllic location at a famous sailing station in the gulf and the Middle East—which offers a breathtaking view of Break Water beach.

Water sports at Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club

What makes the club even more unique is how it honors traditional water sports like dhow sailing, and more contemporary ones like modern rowing and speed boating.

St. Francis Yacht Club

The St.Francis Yacht Club has held the number one spot among Platinum Clubs® of America for years , and remains there even in the 2023 to 2024 rankings . Besides worldwide prestige, it also carries an impressive history as one of the oldest American yacht clubs, having been founded in 1927.

St. Francis Yacht Club clubhouse

While its Mediterranean Revival-style clubhouse is located on the glimmering shores of San Francisco bay, members can also enjoy access to the private Tinsley Island in the Sacramento Delta. It’s known for hosting the Rolex Big Boat Series—one of the premier regattas of the west coast, where members can take part in thrilling races and one-of-a-kind shoreside activities.

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club

Much like the St.Francis Yacht Club, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club (GPYC) in Michigan is among the top three Platinum Clubs® of America. GYPC’s harbor is situated in Lake St. Clair and features 261 boat slips in a certified clean Marina. It also has a world-class staff that’s ready to provide exceptional 24/7 service for all its members.

The highly-acclaimed institution offers a grand clubhouse with a ballroom, three dining rooms, and meeting rooms—among other luxe amenities.

Grosse Point Yacht Club clubhouse

Its main dining room and “The Spinnaker” room offer fine dining experiences for a variety of occasions, be it with family or significant others. Meanwhile, its Grog Shop is the perfect spot for drinks and snacks.

Barbados Yacht Club

Located on Carlisle Bay, just south of Barbados’ capital city Bridgetown, is the Barbados Yacht Club . One can understand why the club became so popular, since it provides full access to the amazing beaches, calm waters, and steady winds that the Caribbean island is known for.

Sailing with the Barbados Yacht Club

Members can enjoy drinks at the Beach Bar, buffet lunches, and even live music on the last Friday of every month. They also have access to the club’s tennis courts and library.

Besides hosting a variety of sailing programs, the club holds a number of regattas like their Harris Paints Regatta and the Mount Gay Rum Barbados Regatta.

Club Nàutic Porto Cristo

Spanish waters are some of the most beautiful in the world, which is exactly why Club Nàutic Porto Cristo has become the go-to exclusive yacht club in Spain. Situated in the east coast of Mallorca, the club was founded in 1969 by Mr. Joan Servera Amer.

Throughout its history, the institution has undergone a number of changes and renovations to transform it into the luxurious club it is today.

Sailing in Club Nautic Porto Cristo

Like many of the other clubs in this list, Club Nàutic Porto Cristo hosts a variety of regattas along with recreational activities like fishing, kayaking, and paddle surfing. Those with a love for nature might also appreciate the club’s dedication to protecting its natural surroundings.

Cruising Yacht Club of Australia

By day, the club is a boater’s haven, and by evening it also serves as a glamorous nightlife center. Its East Marina offers a generous berth, as well as an array of restaurants, cafés, and lounges. Meanwhile the club’s West Bay Marina boasts luxury amenities near the open sea.

Grand Bahama Yacht Club

Kieler Yacht-Club

Another old and prestigious yachting institution is Germany’s Kieler Yacht-Club , which was first established as The Imperial Yacht Club in 1887. The club continues to maintain its long tradition of sailing, while cultivating a passion for the sport within younger generations. One of its main focuses is providing sail training for children, adolescents, and adults alike.

In its current form, the Kieler Yacht Club has 21 rooms and suites, as well as the majestic function rooms “Kaiser’s Hall” and “Commodore’s Hall,” which are a part of the club’s respectable history.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

best yacht clubs in the world

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

best yacht clubs in the world

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

best yacht clubs in the world

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

best yacht clubs in the world

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

best yacht clubs in the world

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

best yacht clubs in the world

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

best yacht clubs in the world

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

best yacht clubs in the world

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

best yacht clubs in the world

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

best yacht clubs in the world

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Russia seeks Eurasian hegemony, with Germany’s help

A 100-year-old theory may explain putin's strategic thinking.

The White House response to the advance of the pro-Russian faction in Ukraine is to ignore Russian President Vladimir Putin, to pressure the Kremlin’s economic strengths and to treat the Russian Federation as a pariah state.

Not only is this policy unoriginal — a soft reprise of the Cold War’s containment doctrine — but it also ignores the hard-won lessons of geopolitical history, especially those of the last 100 years.

Strategists in both Moscow and Berlin, I am told, study the celebrated English geographer Halford Mackinder (1861-1947), whose Heartland theory has been part of the debate in Europe since before World War I.

In a 1904 address at the Royal Geographical Society titled “The Geographical Pivot of History,” later expanded into his 1919 magnum opus, “Democratic Ideals and Reality: A Study in the Politics of Reconstruction,” Mackinder proposed the sweeping Heartland theory, which pictures the world as made up of the “World-Island” of Eurasia and attached Africa, surrounded by “satellite islands” of the Americas and Australia.

Mackinder argued that whoever controls the World-Island, also called the Heartland, controls the world.

An early critical component of this theory was the view that Russia is what Mackinder calls the Pivot. Russia forms a geographic bridge from Europe to Asia across an uninterrupted expanse of steppe and forest; this bridge changed history when the Asian horsemen, Mongol and then Turkic, crashed into Europe. In 1904, Mackinder openly admired the Russian potential for dominating both its neighbors and even the sea powers England and France. Mackinder also saw, presciently, well before the catastrophes of the two world wars and the Cold War, that the balance of power in the World-Island invariably favors the Pivot state of Russia.

Mackinder added a stern warning to Edwardian Whitehall: If Russia expanded over the “marginal lands” of Eurasia, “the empire of the world would be in sight.”

It is chilling to read Mackinder’s next sentence: “This [empire of the world] might happen if Germany were to ally herself with Russia.”

High-level European conversations claim that Putin joins with Chancellor Angela Merkel and their counselors in reading the history of the last century, especially Mackinder, whose work has been a guide for world capitals, including Washington, as recently as the Cold War. Putin and Merkel have renamed Mackinder’s genius into the Common Eurasian Home doctrine.

Putin and Merkel confer often, not only about Ukraine but also about their plan to develop a stable, prosperous, secure Eurasian supercontinent.

Eastern Europe

The Ukrainian showdown is a small piece in Moscow’s and Berlin’s huge plans for the 21st century. “Who rules East Europe commands the Heartland,” Mackinder wrote in 1919, “who rules the Heartland commands the World-Island; who rules the World-Island controls the world.” Moscow and Berlin understand that they are constructing a dominating alliance that treats the U.S. as a peripheral force.

Ukraine begins to define the Kremlin’s aim to recover the Eastern European buffer states that it lost in the failure of the Soviet empire. The sole issue for Ukraine, I am told, is whether the state will be a federation, with eastern Ukraine attached to Moscow, or if it will be broken up, with eastern Ukraine calling itself Novorossiya. The pro-Russian forces in what they have declared the People’s Republic of Donetsk call themselves federalists, not separatists. Their aim is to stay part of a Ukraine that is not bossed by the forces behind Kyiv’s Maidan uprising. The Kremlin is not in a hurry, allowing the media propaganda in Europe, especially in Germany, to paint the Maidan forces as untrustworthy. The Kremlin presents the pro-Russian forces as faithful, churchgoing citizens who are threatened by the gun-toting Kyiv “fascists.”

After Ukraine, the Kremlin aims to go forward gradually and articulately. For example, Putin and Prime Minister Recep Erdogan of Turkey recently conferred about the Muslim and Turkic Crimean Tatars. Putin told Erdogan that Russia is working to make restitution for what was lost in the Stalinist terror. Putin and Erdogan also discussed energy pipelines through Turkey, which may be needed if there is any disruption in Ukrainian pipelines. Turkey very much desires Russian trade. Putin communicated that the Kremlin appreciates Turkish cooperation in three troubled areas: Syria, Cyprus and Ukraine. The exchange is characterized as Putin’s making Erdogan a most friendly offer that he could not refuse.

World-Island and periphery

The increasing hostility between Washington and Moscow is seen in Moscow as evidence that Barack Obama’s administration refuses to acknowledge the supreme geographical advantage that Russia and its ally Germany enjoy over the World-Island.

The Kremlin believes that the White House has made it easy for Russian ambitions by turning the Ukrainian crisis into a contest between NATO and Moscow. The Obama administration has put all its eggs in one basket despite the fact that the other 27 nations in NATO have other priorities.

There is fresh indication from Berlin that the Germans are ready to turn away from the confrontation. Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier indicated that Germany wants to seek normalization with Russia over Ukraine, not just talk of sanctions. Steinmeier’s remark followed European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger’s assessment that cutting off or even cutting back energy from Russia as a means of pressuring Moscow was not a priority. In sum, the Europeans as a whole recognize, as do the Germans, that Russia is in command of the future of the continent.

The Kremlin believes the Obama administration makes each new foreign policy dispute into a personal dispute, as in Obama versus Putin. This formula treats leaders who agree with Obama as moderates and leaders who disagree as enemies. In the Kremlin’s view of the century, Putin is neither a friend nor an enemy of the U.S. He and his allies are pursuing Russia’s destiny at long last, after more than a hundred years of war, pestilence, famine and death. America’s destiny, according to the Mackinder theory, can be that of a rich, potent, benevolent satellite to the world-dominating Common Eurasian Home.
