It's been an up-and-down year for hard-rock heroes  Motörhead . In August, the 40-year-old band headed out on a U.S. tour and released their 22nd studio album, Bad Magic . But soon after, frontman Lemmy Kilmister 's ongoing health issues caused several show cancellations . Fortunately, the metal icon was able to bounce back in time for the trio's annual Motörboat cruise from Miami to the Bahamas, which ran from September 28th through October 2nd. Fellow legends Slayer joined underground heroes like Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies and Corrosion of Conformity on this movable metallic feast, and we were there to capture all the action.

This is what Motörhead's Motörboat looked like – aren't you gutted you missed it?

motorhead motorboat 2015

A fair number of bands these days are holding their own festivals or cruises, but surely none are more metal or filthy than Motörhead’s annual Motörboat voyage.

Setting sail from the sun-soaked Miami, Florida to the somehow even hotter Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, the good ship Norwegian Sky played host to Motörhead’s biggest fans for three days of nothing but heavy drinking and even heavier metal. From Slayer to Anthrax to Suicidal Tendencies to Exodus to the mighty Motörhead, it’s everything any sunburnt metalhead could want from a holiday. Seriously, just look at what you missed out on…

motorhead logo

For the second year in a row Captain Lemmy Kilmister will be guiding the Motorhead’s Motorboat Cruise out onto the high seas where the volume can be turned up so loud that no neighbors can complain. The initial lineup for this years cruise was announced the other day and I am pasting it below for your edification in case you wish to set sail with the lads.

The Press Copy: “We are excited to announce the initial artist lineup for Motörhead’s MotörBoat 2015… Slayer band, Official Motörhead, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Hatebreed, Exodus, Crobot, Phil Campbell’s All Starr Band, Motor Sister, Kyng, Fireball Ministry, Huntress and more! PiercingMetal Thoughts: Clearly there are Heavy Music cruises and there are heavy music cruises and this one looks to be one of the heaviest of them all as Lemmy gets promoted to Admiral for a few days while making sure all things are louder than everything else on the lido deck. Even though I’ve probably already said that I have never been on one of these music cruises yet this is one that I might just have to break that stand on. The top tier bands alone are worthy of the price of access

As Motorhead Close Out Their 2015 Motorboat, Phil Campbell Reflects On The Cruise + What's Next For The Band

Liquid Metal host Jose Mangin opened Motorhead 's final performance on their 2015 Motorboat cruise with a line from the film Airheads . "Who'd win in a wrestling match, Lemmy or God?"

Of course, it's a trick question: Lemmy is God.

But for a rock deity, he's surprisingly down to earth and real. And I don't just mean on a personal "he's-such-a-nice-guy" level—although he was often seen frequenting the M/V Norwegian Sky's casino, staked out at the slots of all places.

No, I noticed something more subtle than that. It started with the venue, which at 1,000 seats felt positively intimate for a band of Motorhead's stature. Hell, they do have a cruise named for them, after all. But despite this close proximity to their fans, the element of celebrity —so prevalent in other musical genres— seemed completely absent. I saw no clambering for photos, no high pitched shrieks, no mad rush to grasp a bit of Lemmy's garment like some kind of rough 'n' ready Christ. There was very little US and THEM, which is usually highlighted when fan and band collide. Instead they're just talented guys admired by a group of their peers. The first among dudes (and lady dudes), as it were.

"This song is about politicians and business men," he spits before "Take The Blame" blows the place up. "Y'know, those c-nt's who are stealing all your money. Just because you've got the power doesn't mean you've got the right." Such indignation! Motorhead's staying power rests in the fact that they've somehow managed to remain a part of the scene that idolizes them. As long as that continues, they will continue to earn the warm affection enjoyed by only a precious few musicians.

I won't bore you with a setlist. They played everything you wanted to hear, including "Metropolis," "Over The Top," and "Rock It," to name just a few. Obviously there's been much talk of Lemmy's recent health scares, leading some to speculate whether he's going to hang up his Rickenbacker in the near future. I don't know any more than you, but I can say for certain that the band sounded as tight as ever. Lemmy's still Lemmy, with thunder coming out of his fingers and a furious growl that makes Bob Dylan sound like a vocal coach.

Perhaps he seemed a little more raw, but that only enhanced the sound. The only noticeable sign of (slight) ill health was his stock-still stage presence. But let's be real, when has appearance been the most important part of a Motorhead show? It sounded amazing. Mikkey Dee is a freaking octopus on the drums, and Phil Campbell is Lord Axman incarnate.

It was Campbell who was gracious enough to give us a few minutes of his time the afternoon before their big Motorboat finale. The two of us sat on a small balcony off the starboard side of the ship—his ship, Motorhead's Motorboat.

VH1: How are you doing today, sir?

Not too bad. This is a nice place to do an interview. Could be worse.

Tell me about it! Well you are the man of the hour, I've never met anyone with a whole cruise named after their band. How did this all come about?

I have no idea, actually. Organized chaos. But it seems really worth while. We're gonna do it again next year and keep on doing it.

What does it feel like to have an entire ship dedicated with your music, and decked out with references to you and filled with fans? it's gotta be great, but it's gotta be pretty surreal.

It is pretty surreal now. If it fucks up our name, we'll go to mud. If it's a success, it'll be great. We'll take the chance. Last year there were no problems. Well, I had one problem with some drunk guy who wanted me to try on a coat and I refused because it was horrible. But apart from that, everyone's really nice people. It's a good thing to take your boyfriend or girlfriend on. You know, save up a little bit of money and take them.

Is there anyone you really wanted to see perform?

Many of the times are clashing, although I did get to see my friends Budderside. They were amazing. I haven't got time for Anthrax because we've just done three weeks with them. I would like to have seen most of the bands once, but it's impossible.

How do you feel the fan reaction has been to Bad Magic ?

We haven't played anything off the new album yet, but we will in five weeks time when we do a European tour. We just didn't get it together in time [for this], Lem wasn't very well a few weeks ago. We were hoping to do some new material then, but we're just glad that Lem is fine and fit now and able to do the shows. But we went to the Top 10 in 11 countries. Only for a week or so!

Was the recording process different than on previous albums?

It was, actually. Instead of going to rehearsals and putting it down on CD and then leaving it for six weeks, we went into the recording studio and as soon as we came up with something good it was down there. And if one of us wanted to do something we could just build on it straight away. It stayed fresh, so the momentum was there. It wasn't like, "Aww, there's that fuckin' song from two months ago." Some of it, we took stuff off, others we added stuff. I really think that's the best way to work, I definitely want to do it again. It was probably cheaper for us as well. I don't know, maybe not!

You've talked about doing a covers album in the past. Was the Rolling Stones cover of "Sympathy For The Devil" a sort of dry run for that?

Not really, no. We've always done the odd cover. We've been wanting to do [a whole album] for years. We shook hands on it two years ago, "The next album is going to be a covers album." We'd choose four song each. I was looking forward to having Lemmy sing "Living On A Prayer." (screeches and laughs) That would have been fucking insane. We did "Heroes" by David Bowie. It's not on the album, but we recorded it.

I'd love to hear that. What would your four song choices be?

Oh, too many. I have no idea. An Eagles song, probably. Definitely and Eagles song. A James Taylor song, a Madonna song. Just to fuck with 'em. (laughs)

(laughs) A Justin Bieber song?

No, fuck off with that. We'll go with Rammstein! (laughs)

You got Brian May to record some guitar work on "The Devil." How did he come into the picture?

I pestered him for two years. I've been pestering him for many years to play with us. He's always been too busy. He's one of the busiest guys I know, with his animal rights campaigns and everything. He's such a nice guy. So I ground him down and finally said, "I won't pester you again for at least two years." So I sent him the track I had in mind, and luckily he thought it was fantastic. So he went to his own studio and did a couple of bits. I jumped for joy when it was all signed, sealed and delivered. The guy's amazing, a real sweetheart. I'm really pleased with that.

Do you have anyone else in mind you want to work with down the line?

There's loads, but whether they want to do it or whether they can fit it in is another matter. It's always good to have a new perspective on things. But we'll see.

Is there anything else from Motorhead that we should be looking out for? We've already got the vibrators and whiskey...

We've got plenty of ideas, don't worry. One thing at a time. It's fun putting out different things. As long as it puts a smile on somebody's face. Butt plugs, maybe? We'll do fucking butt plugs next! (laughs) Magicians kits so you can make your drummer disappear (laughs). Or your singer disappear—I think most bands would buy one.

Photos and recap: Motörhead’s Motorboat

Posted by Bram Teitelman on October 1, 2014

motorhead motorboat 2015

Last week, the first annual  Motörhead Motörboat cruise set sail with an all-star lineup. Motörhead, of course, headlined the event, but there were tons of of other bands, including Anthrax, Testament, Down, Zakk Wylde, High on Fire, and the much-talked-about Metal Allegiance, featuring members of Anthrax, Megadeth and Mike Portnoy, among many others. Ralph Sutton and Jay Oakerson of the Sex Drugs & Rock n Roll  podcast were there, recording their podcast nightly, and we got Sutton to recap the inaugural cruise. Also on board was Wes Orshoski , co-director of  Lemmy , the highly entertaining documentary about the Motörhead frontman, who hosted a screening of the film. He also documented the cruise with the photo gallery you’ll see  below. Take it away, guys!

The first annual  Motörboat presented by legendary rock band Motörhead: Hard rock and heavy metal at its finest on the open sea! Big Jay Oakerson and I got ready to host this beast of a cruise as well as do a live podcast of Sex Drugs & Rock and Roll every night at 12:30. Being that the headliners were Motorhead, Anthrax, Testament, Down and Zakk Wylde (along with a bevy of other kick-ass bands) we knew we were in for a one-of-a-kind experience. Although since the bands were so dude-centric and the cruise security was somewhat tight, this cruise may have lacked in sex and drugs, but it more then made up for in rock n roll.

While we were blown away by some of the ‘newer’ bands like Kill Devil Hill, Danko Jones, Fireball Ministry and Wilson – as well as getting true heavy metal at its finest from the veteran bands aboard –  it was the last minute addition of the Metal Allegiance comprised of two members of Megadeth, two members of Anthrax, Mike Portnoy and featuring the rotating vocal talents of Testament’s Chuck Billy & Anthrax crooner Joey Belladonna as they tore through a set list of heavy metal standards. (Favorite moment: Joey Belladonna invoking Geddy Lee for a downright amazing cover of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”). Rumors were afoot that there would be somewhat of a Pantera reunion – and sure enough, it happened – twice!  Phil, and Rex joined Charlie of Anthrax and Chris of Megadeth as they barreled into a mini Pantera concert featuring songs like “Mouth For War,” “5 Minutes Alone,” “A New Level” and more. Jay giggled like a school girl saying ‘I gotta tape this for Luis!’ (his co-host of his other podcast Legion of Skanks).  It was one of those rock moments you always want to happen – but seldom does.  For that moment, time stood still, and rock was alive again, regardless of what Gene Simmons will tell you!

Over the course of the cruise – we had several of those ‘oh-wow’ moments.  From Dave Ellefson and Chris Broderick hosting a bellyflop contest,  Me singing Christopher Cross’ ‘Ride Like The Wind’ with Down right before an interview (Phil took lead as Bobby and I did the Michael McDonald parts), Jay doing his mandatory karaoke of Alice In Chains’ “Man In The Box” or that first moment Lemmy walked out on stage and said “We are Motorhead and we play rock n roll.”  The rock n roll moments were happening over and over again.   By day two – Alan, the organizer of the event, said this will 100% be an annual event.

By the end of the cruise – we had our rock n roll and pina colada fix and now we are ready to do it all again for Shiprocked 2015 kicking off Superbowl Sunday.  Big Jay and I will be there,  The SDR Show will be on board, and we’d love ya to join us!

The heavy metal icon died in 2015 following a battle with cancer

Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead performs on stage during Bloodstock Open Air Festival at Catton Hall on August 14, 2011 in Derby, United Kingdom

The ashes of Motörhead legend Lemmy Kilmister are set to be housed at locations in Nottingham, Los Angeles and more.

 • READ MORE: ‘Lemmy’: 7 legendary stories the pre-Motorhead biopic should include

Lemmy continues to be thought of as one of the most influential musicians in metal history, and left his mark on the scene through his work with Motörhead – realising classic tracks including ‘Ace Of Spades’ and ‘Overkill’.

He died on December 28, 2015 at the age of 70 , shortly after learning he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Now, it has been confirmed that some of his ashes will be housed at the Rock City venue in Nottingham, as well as at the Derbyshire-based metal festival, Bloodstock.

The project is led by Bloodstock, and sees them commissioning a bust of the legendary frontman that will incorporate some of his ashes. Fans will be able to view the installation made to remember Lemmy at this year’s edition of the festival, which will run between August 8 and 11.

Afterwards, it will be moved to Nottingham’s Rock City, where fans can see the bust all year round. The venue famously hosted 10 Motörhead shows, spanning more than four decades from 1987 to 2006.

“We are honoured to house the Lemmy Bust and we can’t wait to have fans from all over the world be able to pay their respects to one of the gods of rock inside our venue walls,” read a statement from Rock City (via Leftlion ). “Tying in such a figurehead of rock with our venue’s history is fitting and we’re delighted the Bloodstock team asked us to give a home to the Lemmy bust between his annual pilgrimage back to their festival each year.”

Bloodstock’s festival director Vicky Hungerford added, “We were humbled and honoured to be approached by Motörhead management to have Lemmy’s ashes at Bloodstock. Lemmy holds a very special place in everybody’s heart, but to myself and my husband, he was the reason we met and fell in love. Nothing will mean more to us and the Bloodstock family than to honour his legacy and have Lemmy forever at Bloodstock.”

Motörhead’s manager, Todd Singerman, also shared a statement, which read: “Bloodstock has always been a special place for Motörhead and for Lemmy. The people and the energy matched Lemmy’s values perfectly. This is definitely a fitting honour in the continuing series of enshrinements of Lemmy’s ashes in his most loved places” (via Access All Areas ).

As well as the bust being put on display in the UK, more of Lemmy’s ashes are set to be enshrined at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood next month.

The induction will take place on April 19, where fans are invited “to raise a very unique toast to Lemmy and Motörhead with the unveiling of brand new Motörhead Whiskey,” at the site on the Sunset Strip.

It comes after Rainbow Bar & Grill dedicated its patio to Lemmy and re-named it “Lemmy’s Lounge” in 2016. A life-size bronze statue of Lemmy is also featured.

Similarly, to celebrate Lemmy’s Lounge, Roxy owner Nic Adler and Goldenvoice’s Paul Tollett allowed a mural to be placed on the side wall of the Roxy, opposite Lemmy’s Lounge and statue (via Blabbermouth ).

Last summer, it was revealed that Lemmy had more of his ashes scattered in the mud at Germany’s Wacken Open Air festival , following Motörhead playing countless shows there.

“Lemmy coming back to Wacken is an enormous honour for us — words can hardly express how enormous,” said festival co-organiser Thomas Jensen at the time. “We will create a place of remembrance for him that does justice to his significance for an entire genre and beyond.”

“There has always been a special connection between Motörhead and Wacken Open Air; hardly any band has played here more often,” he continued. “The fact that his journey also ends here will forever hold a special meaning.”

Previously, some of Lemmy’s ashes were already used to create tattoos for Motörhead’s tour manager and production assistant. Meanwhile, the artist had also requested before his death for his ashes to be placed inside bullets and sent to his loved ones.

Last month, it was confirmed that plans to  erect a statue  of the Motörhead frontman in the town where he was born have been approved by Stoke-on-Trent City Council .
