Indulge in Luxury with the Sunborn Yacht Afternoon Tea

Sunborn Yacht Afternoon Tea

Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea is a luxury experience for those who are looking for something different. Set in a stunning space with an amazing view of the Docklands, it’s perfect for people who want to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea with a twist. I mean, how often do you get to enjoy afternoon tea on a yacht?

Some links in this post are affiliate links, which means I get commission if you use them. There’s no extra cost to you, and I only recommend what I trust!

Find What You're Looking For

Where is the Sunborn Yacht?

London Docklands, as with so much of the city, is steeped in history. In its prime, it was the part of the port of London, which at one time was the biggest port in the world. Over the years the ports of London scaled back massively and the area was neglected, becoming a not so desirable part of the city. Thankfully, a lot of money was invested and London Docklands has become a vibrant, modern and desirable place to spend time.

The Sunborn Yacht is permanently docked in what was formerly the Royal Victoria Docks. These days, it’s just a stone’s throw from the Excel exhibition centre, and surrounded by hotels, bars and residential areas.

From the restaurant where afternoon tea is served, the view looks out over the water, with flats in the distance and the city of London creates a dramatic skyline.

City of London sunset

As you approach Sunborn Yacht, it’s hard not to have a wow moment. Claimed to be the only super yacht hotel experience available in the UK, it is eye-wateringly huge and not easy to miss as you approach.

On board, there are standard hotel rooms and luxurious suites, as well as a restaurant and bar. The restaurant hosts guests and general public for both dinner and afternoon tea, enjoyed with stunning views of London from the aptly named Land’s End Restaurant.

Sunborn Yacht also offers conference space, and if you’re really after the wow factor, you can even get married on the yacht!

Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea menu

Sunborn Yacht Afternoon Tea menu

As with most traditional afternoon teas, the Sunborn Yacht offers a three-tier dining experience. On the bottom layer, the sandwiches are lined up for easy viewing of the fillings. Middle layer follows traditional afternoon tea with the scones, and on the top layer are the desserts.

The sandwiches on offer are traditional British choices such as ham and mustard, coronation chicken, salmon and creme fraiche, beef and horseradish and egg mayo. Served with different types of bread, with one filling in a brioche roll, this is far from a standard sandwich plate.

Moving on to the scone layer, two raisin scones are on offer per person, accompanied by clotted cream and a small jar of fruit jam or preserve. Although the scones are modest in size, they’re delicious and the perfect size to be enjoyed alongside the rest of the afternoon tea.

Coming to the final dish of sweets, this is where the creativity of the chef usually comes through. For the Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea, you’re treated to an Earl Grey panna cotta – keeping on trend with the afternoon tea – plus a chocolate delice, a mini jam tart and a delicious passionfruit cheesecake.

You can view the full Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea menu as of October 2022 here .

How to book Afternoon Tea on the Sunborn Yacht

You can book afternoon tea directly on the Sunborn Yacht website , or via a third party provider.

Can I buy a voucher?

The Sunborn Yacht Afternoon Tea is a unique idea for a gift, and vouchers are available for afternoon tea or afternoon tea with cocktails directly on the Sunborn Yacht website .

There are also vouchers on Wowcher for a discounted rate, though there are usually time limitations on these, for example only during the week.

Does the yacht move?

Nope! The yacht is permanently moored in the dock, and has virtually no movement or swaying despite being in the water.

Is there a dress code?

Afternoon tea is still considered a nice way to spend the afternoon and an event to dress up for. While there’s no formal dress code, you’ll likely feel a little out of place if you turn up in joggers and a hoody. It’s best to aim for smart-casual.

How to get to Sunborn Yacht

By car: Sunborn Yacht is permanently docked just next door to the Excel Exhibition Centre, so the car park there is conveniently located to use for access.

By public transport: If you’re arriving by tube, the nearest stations are Custom House (Elizabeth Line and DLR) or Canning Town (Jubilee Line).

By cable car: If you’re coming from/ going to Greenwich after, don’t miss the opportunity to catch the cable car!

Can you stay on board the Sunborn Yacht?

If you’re looking for a really luxurious experience, you can pair your afternoon tea with a stay on board the Sunborn Yacht Hotel . It’s a great location for exploring East London, but with accommodation as quirky and fancy as this, wouldn’t you want to stay on board and enjoy it?

My experience

My cousin recently got married and as a belated celebration we had a girl’s day enjoying the Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea. Four of us made our way to the yacht on a chilly October day, with the rain clouds threatening overhead.

Stepping out from the dockside lift into the main lobby, we were greeted with an instant wow factor. The grand chandelier hung between the curved staircases, and we made our way up to the restaurant to be shown to our table. It was fairly quiet in the restaurant despite being 1pm on a Saturday, but we didn’t mind as we were here for two things: cakes and catch ups.

The staff were very attentive, and our hot drinks appeared in front of us in no time: two teas, two coffees. As we started to settle in, the plate stands were placed on the table and we got stuck in. I don’t know about you, but our method is start at the bottom with the sandwiches, and work our way up to the scones and then desserts.

Plate tiers afternoon tea

My mum and I shared our plate stand, offering to swap sandwiches we each didn’t like. My favourite was the ham and mustard on soft, squidgy white bread, with just enough mustard to give it a hint of ohh without overpowering the thick slices of ham.

Moving up the scones, the age old debate of jam or cream first was quickly settled with a generous smooshing of both. I had an unusual selection of blackcurrant jam, and while initially I wasn’t sure, it turned out to be quite a nice change. The other pot of jam on our plate was raspberry, a firm favourite in my family to have with scones.

The top plate was calling to us, but we’re old hands at this afternoon tea game and knew the key was pacing. Thankfully we were in great company and managed to stretch our afternoon tea out over several hours, being offered top ups on our drinks at regular intervals. By the time we were ready to head off, any leftover food had really been sat out too long to request a doggy bag.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely! The yacht is very impressive, and although a large portion of it is the hotel, the view from the restaurant over the water is gorgeous. If it’s a sunny day and you can sit outside, just wow. There aren’t many places you can enjoy afternoon tea on a boat in London, so it has a unique feel to it.

The food was delicious and the service was excellent, what more could you ask for? Oh, price. In comparison to the cost of afternoon tea at some of London’s fancier spots, the Sunborn Yacht afternoon tea is very reasonably priced, especially if you can snag a voucher on a discount website!

I never say no to an Afternoon Tea in London and this one is very close to my former base in East London. Definitely a cool spot to check out. The pricing is very moderate and I would love to try it myself. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and making me aware that this experience exists.

Such an amazing way to spend an afternoon for a special occasion! Now that I think of it, I don’t think I’ve had a proper afternoon tea ever, even during my stay in the UK – though I *did* have a lot of scones (with cream first! I think my method would be the same as you: starting at the bottom then making my way to the top layers!

Afternoon Tea at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel in London

  • February 21, 2022

Another day in London means another Afternoon Tea spot obviously. And to keep things simple, Sabina had booked us in for Afternoon Tea at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel in London.

Read here: Overnight stay at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel.

So now I can confirm, I’ve stayed overnight in a yacht and I have had Afternoon Tea in a yacht too. The fact that it was moored, doesn’t need to come into it, its still a floating hotel.

After Breakfast we jumped onto the Emirates car cables and spent the day shopping at the O2. Afternoon Tea after a day of shopping was needed, and so we jumped back on to the cables and made our way back to the Sunborn yacht hotel.

Once again I was blown away, as soon as you enter the yacht hotel you leave the hustle and bustle of London behind. And the entrance feels just like a Cruise ship should, with the spiral glass staircase and grand chandelier

Afternoon Tea is served at The Lands End restaurant, and we managed to get a seat with a view. A view of the London rain pouring down, but nevertheless its a view right?

The Land Ends Restaurant

The overall look of the restaurant is very vintage, the blue carpets with the anchors, the wooden tables, combination straight up chairs, mirrored ceilings, all with gold warm tones, dimly lit, warm.

It almost has a Gentlemen’s room feeling, like I was expecting a couple of men in tuxedos with cigars to walk through with bourbon glasses. (Yes. I am visualising a scene from the Titanic)

Drinks Menu

The afternoon tea at the Sunborn comes with a bubbly- obviously we don’t have alcohol, so the waitress helped us out with some non-alcoholic fizz to start.

For teas their was a selection of 4 available, 2 types of coffees, and hot chocolate was also offered. I always go for the box standard English breakfast to start , and if I feel inventive we had a option to change it midway.

Sandwiches and Scones

I don’t think I’ve ever had this many options of sandwiches in a vegetarian afternoon tea.

for sandwiches we had

  • Spiced tofu sandwiches,
  • Mature chedder cheese and chutney,
  • Classic cucumber with yoghurt dill and chive,
  • Avocado with cream cheese
  • Red cabbage with spiced tofu.

We had super warm scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, they were so soft, warm and buttery.

Sweet treats

And the top tier and the prettiest was a selection of sweet treats

I loved the environment, the overall look, it actually felt like we were on a cruise. I love that they have kept the whole vintage look of a cruise ship, the dim colours and masculine 1900’s kinda vibes.

The afternoon tea was really nice, I loved the creativity of the sandwiches which is usually rare when you go for vegetarian afternoon tea. The scones were warm and fresh which always is a bonus. Tea and drinks were topped up on request, and the desserts were delectable.

The customer service was second to none, the lady that served us was warm, friendly and attentive to our needs.

Altogether an absolute fabulous day, and I would recommend Afternoon Tea here in a heartbeat. Even if it is just to see the Interior and get the fabulous photo at the staircase.

If you can book it on a warm day when the suns shining, I’m sure Afternoon Tea on the deck overlooking the Thames and Canary Wharf would be out of this world

Afternoon Tea at Sunborn Yacht Hotel London

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

After reading the reviews, I was in two minds to cancel this afternoon tea. However, when we arrived we could see they were Covid complaint. We got seated outside, the weather was amazing, and such a beautiful yacht hotel. The waiters and waitresses were great!... The afternoon tea was lovely and fresh, the sandwiches, cakes and scones were beautiful! The scones were baked freshly, and tasted divine. The cocktail was lush!! Ordered another one. The only downside was that it was a little busier than normal, so service was a little slow. In conclusion it was great, lovely experience and definitely worth the money!! More

Came here for an afternoon tea on Saturday for a birthday. Easy to book online. The venue itself is lovely and unique, feels very grand walking through the reception. There were only a few tables plus us when we arrived. Service was very slow and... we had to ask for extra plates, apart from bringing the initial menu over, during the few hours we were there, none of the many waiters asked if we needed anything. We had to get their attention to ask for extra drinks and the bill and to then actually pay the bill. So overall not very attentive but we did appreciate being able to sit there for a quite a while after we had finished our food. The food itself was great and plenty of it. More

Lovely spot for afternoon tea on a beautiful day, I was served by Hassan on 14/09. He was lovely, helped and always made sure we got a great service. He was on point and very understanding. He knew exactly how to meet to our dietary... requirements. The afternoon tea I feel could have been better, especially the finger sandwiches were basic. Also the presentation was better in the pictures. When served on the day it was different in presentation. I have tried out many afternoon tea spots and can say the taste of the food wasn’t to the best. However the atmosphere and service was good. More

So disappointed with our visit for afternoon tea. This was a special birthday treat and we were both so looking forward to it. The venue is dull. You could be sitting anywhere other than on a 'luxury yacht'. You couldn't see out of the windows... due to them being dirty! As for the food - the sandwiches consisted of smoked salmon on white bread? Egg & onion brioche buns? The other sandwiches, I couldn't tell you what they contained as the contents were non-descript. The sandwiches had just come out of the fridge so were icy cold. The scones looked appealing but when cut in half the middle was undercooked lump of dough. Tea did not come round - we had to ask for extra plates and ordered two drinks which 12.5% service charge was added to! No one came over and asked if everything was alright or whether we needed anything, the whole time, four members of staff stood chatting looking at the Reception PC. There was one poor waitress running around, serving guests and clearing tables. I have also emailed Sunborn but they do not have the courtesy to reply. More

We visited here for an afternoon tea for a family treat whilst we were staying in London for a mini break. The yacht looked absolutely incredible. The foyer area was breathtaking, a large chandelier surrounded by two spiraling staircases either side. We were ably assisted... from the start of our experience and taken to our table overlooking the dock area of the Thames. We didn't have too long to wait for our afternoon tea. The food itself was more than ample, four finger sandwiches and a mini-brioche roll. Two fruit scones and four other cakes complete on a three tiered china tray. We opted for a champagne cocktail option, which was a great accompaniment to the food that was served. We were also given a variety of options for tea, ranging from the usual English breakfast, darjeeling, Earl Grey etc. Our waiter was always on hand to answer our questions and was very passionate about their job. We left there feeling full and satisfied and knowing that when we return to the capital for a break that we will definitely consider staying at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel. More

Booked as a birthday gift for husband and would not go again! Business hotel full of people going to Excel Centre next door! Breakfast a joke, queues for tables, even at 9.15 as business clients in..great to get away from work for leisure and listen... to business people talking load of bull!! Rooms tired and old fashioned..could not go out on balcony as it was full of water, from rain but no drainage to let it out 🙄..paid extra £20 a night for river view. Breakfast 3 choices given, 1 cereal..no fruit. Shame one floor not kept for business, inc breakfast! Gibraltor Sunborn so amazing compared to this one..modern, more facilities. Staff seemed pushed and rushed! Not a good experience😑. More

Enjoyable experience for my birthday. Typical cream tea fare with sandwiches, scones and cake etc. tasted freshly made. Lovely surroundings with a sense of luxury and fabulous views. The lady who served us ( small anchor tattoo on hand) was lovely and a great credit... to the hotel. All in all a super treat from my other half. Booked via a voucher so didn’t pay full price which would of made it too expensive. More

yacht hotel afternoon tea

I booked afternoon tea with a Wowcher as it was my friends birthday and I wanted to do something different, the yacht it’s self was very nice on entering, we was shown to our table and given a complimentary cocktail which was an Aperol spritz... and it was very nice , then the food arrived which was a nice selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes all very nice and fresh and unlimited tea or coffee. They even put a chocolate ‘ happy birthday’ on the cakes. We sat outside on the deck to drink our tea which had a lovely view of the river, the cable cars, O2 and people doing watersports in the distance. The staff were very attentive and polite. Overall a very nice experience and definitely would go again More

yacht hotel afternoon tea

Your staff dealt with an unreasonable and rude customer in a gracious and professional manner. She was arrogant and did not deserve the apologies and attention you afforded her. The afternoon tea was exactly as advertised with a good range of sandwiches and desserts, flavours... of tea and desserts. Staff were extremely helpful and allowed us to see the upper deck. You created a relaxed atmosphere and nothing was too much to ask. More

So it was out first time out since the pandemic and it’s been tough few months working in the Nhs. We booked the afternoon tea which was £35 and was a nice way of getting together . Unfortunately when the bill came it was much... more than expected. The waiter did not give us a wine list which in hindsight we should have asked for. The waiter could have advised us the champagne afternoon tea would have been a better option as £48 for a bottle of Prosecco seems a of money to us. Also the waiter served it and it didn’t go round so he said would we like another which we did. Had we known we would never of needed another bottle and really the waiter could have made it go round. After explaining to a very rude unapologetic gentleman that came to the table we realised we were wasting our time. We should have asked for a wine menu and will remember this in the future. We hoped to stay over on the yacht next time but certainly will not after this experience. More

I took my 82 year old mum for afternoon tea on the Sunborn Yacht based near London's Excel Centre. We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather for November, it was bright and fresh. We were able to choose our own seats and chose one... by the window and were able to see magnificent views of the Thames, sea birds, The O2 and the cable cars. Our every need/wish was catered for by really friendly and helpful staff. We both had different food requirements and it was all respectfully catered for without any fuss. The sandwiches/cakes were amazing and we enjoyed several hours chatting and were not under any pressure to vacate our table by staff. We were even allowed to take the cakes home that we didn't eat in a lovely box! We will definitely be back and would totally recommend. A little pricey, but I got a deal on a voucher website, but worth every penny. If I have to make one criticism, it is that before visiting I asked where was the closest car park, and was just told to park at Excel. I would have benefitted from them telling me to park in the orange zone 1 or 2 to be at the right end for a shorter walk with my elderly mum. Also the journey on foot from car park to hotel was a little awkward, unless I just went the wrong way, so some signage from the car parks would be advantageous. More

Was really looking forward to the afternoon tea but came away feeling underwhelmed. It's a lovely venue and the staff were friendly but they were the only good points. I assumed the food would be freshly made but when it arrived it didn't seem very... fresh. Some of the items weren't as stated on the menu so we were unsure of exactly what they were. Other guests were able to swap and change items from the menu but we weren't told this was possible so just accepted what was given. Although the staff were helpful on arrival they disappeared once the food was served so I had to try to get their attention and call them over several times. I expected the staff to be more attentive. I bought the afternoon tea from Groupon so was just glad I hadn't paid full price. More

What an experience! My sister and I visited Sunborn Yacht for a phenomenal afternoon tea. From entering the reception area, we were greeted by the happy, helpful members of staff who pointed us in the right direction of the afternoon tea area. We were then... waited on by a lovely, young lady (Mica) who made sure we had everything we needed and more. During our visit, the manager (Sarwar) assisted us with our voucher issue ensuring we had a stress free and enjoyable afternoon tea. I believe the photo of our food speaks of itself 😍 I would highly recommend visiting and will definitely be going again. More

yacht hotel afternoon tea

We have had many afternoon teas in the past & this one by far is definitely our favourite. Firstly all the staff were very friendly, welcoming & helpful. When asked a member of staff about the yacht they gave us lots of information about it,... was very knowledgeable. Which was amazing obviously not just a job to them they were very passionate about it. The afternoon tea was fantastic, a variety of sandwiches, scones & cakes/desserts. Was asked what type of tea we would like, not just one to choose from. The sandwiches, scones cakes & tea tasted lovely. A decent amount of food & drink for an afternoon tea. The setting was beautiful. Very pleasurable afternoon. The yacht itself is beautiful, we only got to see the restaurant, reception, toilets & deck but these were stunning. Would definitely go again & next time to stay on the yacht too. Truly amazing afternoon & not rushed. More

An uncomfortable experience from beginning to end. My friends and I were made to feel unwanted by the racist manager running the restaurant. He purposefully told servers to not serve us, indirectly blamed us for being seated at a table that we didn’t even select... ourselves, spoke down to us, and in general gave us the impression that he didn’t want us there. He was extremely demeaning and belittling in how he spoke to us and made us feel like we were not allowed to ask any questions. He specifically told servers to prioritise the tables nearby, all of which were seated with white customers, and to not bother with our table at all. He told servers to not provide my pregnant friend with a water refill, claiming that “they’ll just keep asking for more so don’t give it to them”. He made snide remarks when we wanted to confirm that our booking was for the correct number of people, implying that we were being absurd to want to ensure that we’d not be overcharged for an error on their end. This shouldn’t have been a surprise considering that he wrongly assumed we’d pay with a coupon the minute he saw our faces anyway. The cost does not match the experience in the slightest. Please don’t waste your money, there are better places where you can get afternoon tea and you won’t get treated poorly based on your race or religion. The only thing that smelled worse than the lingering sewage stink, was the manager’s attitude. More

A third added "Really nice setting. We visited for afternoon tea which was a gift from friends. It was excellent as we're all the staff who were friendly and attentive."

However, one person said "We went for afternoon tea to celebrate my sister's birthday. Beautiful views, yacht was lovely, service good. I emailed in advance dietary requirements for sandwiches but when they were served they were wrong, they did change them . Scones were rubbery, cakes were good. Been to better afternoon teas."

Table of Contents

Oh, hey there, beautiful families of Brisbane and beyond! Are you ready to light up your evening with shimmering skies and smiling kiddos? Brisbane Riverfire is not just an event; it’s a spectacle of light, sound, and joy. It’s that one magical night when the city’s night sky is awash with vibrant fireworks, and what better way to bask in this dazzling display than aboard a Brisbane Riverfire Cruise ? Pack up your excitement and let’s sail through the ins and outs of planning the perfect family adventure on the river!

What Is Brisbane Riverfire?

Before we embark on our cruise details, let’s chat about what Riverfire is all about. Part of the larger Brisbane Festival, this iconic pyrotechnics show draws thousands of spectators yearly. It’s a tradition that signals the grand finale of three weekends filled with arts, music, and cultural festivities. And guess what? The Riverfire isn’t merely a visual treat; it’s accompanied by a soundtrack that’ll have your hearts thumping in unison.

Why Choose a Riverfire Cruise for Your Family?

Imagine avoiding the crowds, having comfy seating, and enjoying a clear view of the fireworks – sounds like a dream? Well, it’s a reality on a Riverfire cruise! You’ll have the luxury of witnessing the pyrotechnic miracles from the best vantage point – the river itself.

  • Unobstructed Views: No more jostling for space or kids hoisted on shoulders; everyone gets a front-row seat to the action.
  • Comfort and Convenience: With amenities at hand, there’s no need to worry about little legs tiring out or finding restrooms in a sea of people.
  • Exclusive Experience: A cruise adds that special ‘wow’ factor, turning the night into an exclusive experience your family will remember for years to come.

Choosing the Right Cruise for Your Family

Not all cruises are created equal, especially when you’ve got kiddos to consider. Here’s what to keep an eye out for when selecting your vessel for the night:

  • Child-Friendly Amenities: Look for cruises offering facilities like changing rooms, high chairs, and children’s menus — small comforts that can make a big difference.
  • Type of Cruise: From luxury liners to more intimate vessels, there’s a range to suit your family’s style and budget.
  • Duration of the Cruise: Consider bedtime routines and opt for a cruise timing that won’t turn your magical evening into a pumpkin hour.

Maximizing Your Riverfire Cruise Experience – Tips and Tricks

Okay, let’s make this cruise unforgettable! A little bit of planning goes a long way, and I’m here to sprinkle some insider tips for you:

  • Arrive Early: Boarding times can be strict, and traffic is expected. Aim to be early to prevent any last-minute rushes.
  • Layer Up: Evenings on the river can get chilly, especially for the little ones. Bring layers to ensure everyone’s comfy from start to finish.
  • Pack Essentials: Think snacks, water bottles, and any must-haves to keep the kids happy. Being prepared never goes out of style!

Alrighty, isn’t this exciting? We’re about to dive deeper into planning your family’s memorable Brisbane Riverfire cruise. Stay with me as we cruise along and I shall reveal everything you need to know from booking your tickets to waving goodbye to a night filled with epic sparkles and warm family memories. So hold onto your captain’s hats – adventure awaits!

5 Essential Things Parents Should Know in Preparing for Brisbane Riverfire Cruise

There’s no denying that preparation is key, especially when you’re setting sail for a night packed with fireworks and family fun. Let’s walk through five essential things parents should know to ensure that their Brisbane Riverfire Cruise is smooth sailing:

Early Bird Gets the Worm: Riverfire cruise tickets can sell out faster than hotcakes, so it’s crucial to book early. This not only ensures your spot on the boat but often secures you an early-bird discount. Many cruise operators also offer family packages, so keep a lookout for deals that could save you some bucks.

2. Planning Your Journey: Transportation and Parking

Go Public or Carpool: Due to expected traffic congestion, public transport might be your best bet. If you’re driving, pre-book parking near the departing terminal, or better yet, carpool with another family to minimize the number of vehicles. Make sure you map out your route and have a backup plan in case of any delays.

3. What to Bring: The Ultimate Checklist

Pack Smart: In addition to the essentials like snacks and water, consider bringing glow sticks for the kids—it adds to the fun and helps you keep an eye on them. Binoculars can bring those high-flying fireworks up close, and don’t forget a fully charged camera or phone to capture the memories.

4. Safety on Board: Keeping Everyone Secure

Brief the Kids: Excitement can run high, but safety comes first. Have a chat with your little ones about staying within designated areas and following crew instructions. Always keep an eye on your children and stay together as a family during boarding and disembarking.

5. Dietary Considerations: Meals and Snacks

If there are any dietary restrictions or allergies, speak with the cruise company beforehand. Most are happy to accommodate special requests, but they’ll need a heads-up. Don’t rely solely on the onboard menu—packing some of your kids’ favorites is always a good backup.

Getting There and Back: After the Fireworks Fade

As the last spark fades in the night sky, it’ll be time to head home. Plan your exit strategy, as everyone will be leaving at the same time. Some patience will be needed, and remember, the kids will be tired, so a calm, organized departure will help end the evening on a good note.

With these priceless tips and mindful planning, your family’s Brisbane Riverfire Cruise is set to be an enchanting evening that combines the thrills of a sparkling spectacular with the warmth of family togetherness. Embrace this special occasion as an opportunity to create lifelong memories amidst the glimmer of Brisbane’s beautiful skyline. Remember, it’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey there together. Happy cruising! ??

  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;

  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Zambezi Queen Chobe River cruise

Zambezi Queen river cruise

Lodge style Happy coasting

Not your ordinary river cruise

Cruising along the Chobe River with a fresh cocktail in your hand, watching an orange-glowing sun sink slowly below the horizon? Well yes, but staying at the Zambezi Queen is so much more than a river cruise. It is a magical experience, where you can get extremely close to very relaxed wildlife. When you wake up and peek through the curtains, you will see elephants, hippos, birds - all indulging in the fresh waters of the Chobe River. Leave the ‘mother ship’ by hopping on a smaller, yet comfortable, tender boat to get even closer to the wildlife. You will soon realise that the Zambezi Queen offers a true hotel experience on the Chobe River, operating between Botswana and Namibian waters. This long (45 meter) luxury boat cruises gently down the river, with amazing views over the Caprivi Strip on one side and Chobe National Park on the other. Once on board, flexibility is key. Feel like venturing out in a smaller boat, or trying your luck during a fishing trip? It’s all possible. Or are you leaning more towards lazing all morning on the viewing deck to the background sound of rippling water? No problem, it is all about finding your own flow.

Sleeping in small ship cabins? We didn’t think so. This luxury vessel has three floors with fourteen cabins on the first and second floor. Spacious, modern, beautifully decorated, with comfortable beds and spa-like bathroom – just to name a few characteristics. There are ten cabins with a small private balconies and four larger master cabins. Cabins are twin or double, en-suite with a toilet and shower. There are fans and shutters to keep the cabin cool. All the main areas are on the top floor (for the best views), air-conditioned and protected by mosquito screening. Simply nestle yourself into one of the cosy nooks, glimpse at game through a telescope, order your favourite drink at the bar, or dip in the plunge pool with a 360°-degree view. And let’s not forget the culinary delights, served on board. From a creamy bowl of warming porridge in the morning, to a decadent white chocolate parfait at night: dining here is a treat. The well-trained kitchen staff effortlessly combines local flavours with culinary delights from the west, creating mouth-watering dishes, suited for true gourmet palates.

Activities at the Zambezi Queen

A boat safari on a floating boutique hotel is an entirely different experience from a land-based safari. You will cruise along one of the most game-dense areas of Africa. During dry season, islands along the riverbank stay green, attracting wildlife from all over. From tender boats, enjoy water based safari activities, full of elephant watching (Chobe is home to one of the biggest elephant populations in the world), spotting rare birds, buffalo herds, prides of lions, hippos lolling about and much more. Like fishing? Tiger and bream fishing tours are offered in season. Go on a tour to a local village to see more of Botswana’s rich culture or sign up for a game drive into Chobe National Park (at an additional cost). Activities are in the mornings and afternoons, with a delicious lunch in between during the hottest hours of the day (and perhaps followed by a siesta?). After the afternoon safari activity, sundowners, dinner and amazing African skies are served. The Zambezi Queen is moored in Namibian waters every evening, to provide you with the most spectacular views of the African sunset. Yes, a safari on the Zambezi Queen is truly smooth sailing.

Tripadvisor comments Zambezi Queen

Normally, a safari game drive consists of driving through the bush for a few hours and scanning the scenery in hopes of an animal encounter. With a river boat cruise on the Chobe Riverfront, such intense effort is not needed. Consisting of a series of flat, grassy islands, visitors are presented with sweeping panoramas of herds of elephant, Cape Buffalo, various wildebeests, crocodiles and numerous hippos. This is also a bird-lovers' delight with many species represented. And when the sun goes down, the mighty African sunset will leave an indelible mark on your soul. Yeah. It's that good. Doc4 from Plainfield, NJ
We had an amazing time on the Zambezi Queen. Wayne and his staff (especially Lennon) were outstanding. We were so well taken care of, had a blast and enjoyed the wildlife and storms to the fullest. The staff included us in their beautiful music and dance on our last night. Our room was beautiful and they've added an on-short generator so there is electricity at night. This was one of the biggest highlights of our 2 weeks in Africa. Noriana

The Zambezi Queen traverses from Botswana, across the Chobe River, to the Namibian side of the Chobe River. Seeing the Chobe National Park from the Zambezi Queen is a unique experience. The landscape and wildlife scenes, along with the riverbank, change daily as you tranquilly float through the wilderness.

November – March: Prolific game drives

November to March, and sometimes April as well, is known as the wet season in this region. The wildlife moves freely through the Chobe National Park as there is an abundance of water and this makes for exceptional game viewing.

June – October: Lots of wildlife on the riverbanks

This is when the Chobe River banks come to life. Many animal species gather around and stay close to the main water source, and you can watch them as the Zambezi Queen floats by. Going out on the tender boats is great at any time of the year, and even more special during this time. Don’t forget to book a trip on the specialised photographic boats; you won’t want to miss out on capturing the momentous activity.

September: Fantastic for birding

There are, in general, about 450 bird species in the Chobe region. Birding season starts in September, when the first migrants arrive, boosting the bird population by up to 20% compared to the winter months.

Norilsk: The city built by gulag prisoners where Russia guards its Arctic secrets

Environmental activists are frustrated by how authorities handled a diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

Arctic suffers worst ever industrial spill

The drive from Norilsk airport to the city takes you past mile after mile of crumbling, Soviet-era factories.

It looks like an endless, rusting scrapyard - a jumble of pipes, industrial junk and frost-bitten brickwork. If you were looking for an industrial apocalypse film setting, this would be your place - but you're unlikely to get the permissions.

Norilsk was built in Stalin's times by gulag prisoners. This gritty industrial city is a testament to their endurance both of the cruelty of Stalin's regime and of the harsh polar climate. There were no thoughts then on how to build to protect the environment, just to survive it.

Norilsk in Russia. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Vasily Ryabinin doesn't think much has changed, at least in ecological terms. He used to work for the local branch of the federal environmental watchdog, Rosprirodnadzor, but quit in June after exposing what he says was a failure to investigate properly the environmental impact of the gigantic diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

At 21,000 tonnes, it was the largest industrial spill in the polar Arctic .

Despite the Kremlin declaring a federal emergency and sending a host of different agencies to participate in the clean-up, just last week Mr Ryabinin and activists from Greenpeace Russia found another area where technical water used in industrial processes was being pumped directly into the tundra from a nearby tailing pond. Russia's investigative committee has promised to investigate.

"The ecological situation here is so bad," Mr Ryabinin says.

"The latest constructions such as the tailing pond at the Talnack ore-processing plant were built exclusively by Nornickel chief executive Vladimir Potanin's team and supposedly in accordance with ecological standards, but on satellite images you can see that all the lakes in the vicinity have unnatural colours and obviously something has got into them."

Nornickel Plant and container (on the left) which had the leak. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Mining company Nornickel would disagree. It has admitted flagrant violations at the tailing pond and suspended staff it deems responsible at both the Talnack plant and at Norilsk Heat and Power plant no 3 where the diesel spill originated from.

On Thursday it appointed Andrey Bougrov, from its senior management board, to the newly-created role of senior vice president for environmental protection. It has a clear environmental strategy, provides regular updates on the status of the spill, and its Twitter feed is filled with climate-related alerts.

But what investors read is very different to the picture on the ground.

21,000 tonnes of diesel oil has spilled into two rivers in Norilsk

Norilsk used to be a closed city - one of dozens across the Soviet Union shut off to protect industrial secrets. Foreigners need special permissions approved by the Federal Security Service (FSB) to enter the region. It would take an invitation from Nornickel to make that happen and, for the past month since the spill, that has not been forthcoming.

Unlike in Soviet times, Russian citizens are now free to come and go. That's why our Sky News Moscow team were able to fly in and travel around the city, even if getting to the spill site was blocked. What they were able to film provides a snapshot of the immense challenge Russia faces in upgrading its Soviet-era industrial infrastructure, particularly at a time when climate change is melting the permafrost on which much of it was built.

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Just downwind from one of the rusting factories on the city outskirts is a huge expanse of dead land. The skeletal remains of trees stand forlorn against the howling Arctic winds. Sulphur dioxide poisoning has snuffed the life out of all that lived here. Norilsk is the world's worst emitter of sulphur dioxide by a substantial margin.

"For 80km south of here everything is dead," Mr Ryabinin says, "and for at least 10km in that direction too. Everything here depends on the wind."

Sample took by Vasily Ryabinin near the Nornickel plant in Norilsk, Russia, on the day of an accident. Pic: Vasily Ryabinin

Immediately after the spill, Mr Ryabinin filmed and took samples from the Daldykan river just a few kilometres from the fuel tank which had leaked. By that point the river was a churning mix of diesel and red sludge dredged up from the riverbed by the force of the leak. Norilsk's rivers have turned red before and the chemical residues have sunk to the bottom, killing all life there. Nothing has lived in those rivers for decades.

In his capacity as deputy head of the local environmental watchdog, Mr Ryabinin says he insisted that he be allowed to fly further north to check the levels of contamination in Lake Pyasino and beyond.

Nornickel at the time claimed the lake was untouched by the spill. Mr Ryabinin says his boss encouraged him to let things be.

"I can't be sure I would have found anything, but this sort of confrontation - making sure I didn't go there with a camera, let alone with bottles for taking samples, it was all very clear to me. It was the final straw."

Rosprirodnadzor refused to comment to Sky News on Mr Ryabinin's allegations or suggestions that the agency was working hand in hand with Nornickel.

The Nornickel plant and the place where diesel meets red water (polluted by other chemicals). Pic: Vasily Ryabinin

Georgy Kavanosyan is an environmental blogger with a healthy 37,000 following on YouTube. Shortly after the spill, he set out for Lake Pyasino and to the Pyasina River beyond to see how far the diesel had spread.

"We set out at night so that the Norilsk Nickel security wouldn't detect us. I say at night, but they've got polar nights there now, north of the Arctic Circle. So it's still light but it's quieter and we managed to go past all the cordons."

He is one of the few to have provided evidence that the diesel has in fact travelled far beyond where the company admits. Not just the 1,200km (745m) length of Lake Pyasino but into the river beyond.

He says his measurements indicated a volume of hydrocarbons dissolved in the water of between two and three times normal levels. He thinks after he published his findings on YouTube, the authorities' vigilance increased.

Greenpeace Russia have spent the last two weeks trying to obtain samples from Lake Pyasino and the surrounding area. They have faced difficulties getting around and flying their samples out for independent analysis.

They are now waiting for results from a laboratory in St Petersburg but say the samples remain valid technically for just four days after collection and that they weren't able to make that deadline due to the authorities' actively obstructing their work.

Vasily Ryabinin and Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace Russia specialises in oil spills and says this has happened to her before. This time, a police helicopter flew to the hunter's hut where they were staying and confiscated the fuel for the boat they were using. Then a deputy for the Moscow city parliament tasked with bringing the samples back from Norilsk was forced to go back empty-handed.

"We were told at the airport we needed permission from the security department of Nornickel," Ms Sakirko says. "We asked them to show us some law or statement to prove that this was legal or what the basis for this was, but they haven't showed us anything and we still don't understand it."

Nornickel announced this week that the critical stage of the diesel spill is over. The company is now finalising dates for a press tour for foreign media and for other international environmentalists.

Mr Ryabinin thinks this should have happened weeks ago.

"If we don't let scientists come to the Arctic region to evaluate the impact of the accident, then in the future if anything similar happens, we won't know what to do."

A spokesperson for Nornickel said the company "is actively cooperating with the scientific community and will meticulously assess both the causes and effects of the accident."

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Nornickel considers permafrost thawing to be the primary cause of the accident, but is waiting for the end of investigation before making a final statement, the spokesperson said.

They added that the company "accepts full responsibility for the incidents on its sites these past two months and holds itself accountable for any infrastructural deficits or poor decisions by personnel.

"The imperative is to do everything to clean up our sites, instil a stronger culture of transparency and safety in our workforce, and ensure that such situations do not occur in the future."

Ship Details

Aqua Nera Setting a new standard for luxury river cruising on the Amazon, Aqua Nera draws design inspiration from the Peruvian Amazon’s mystical black water lagoons and bears the hallmarks of contemporary style and generous interiors that Aqua Expeditions cruise ships are known for. Aboard the Aqua Nera, award-winning architects Noor Design crafts every space to perfection. The vessel’s 20 spacious Design Suites convey a sense of Amazon tranquility, while the social spaces showcase refined elegance with a touch of drama. Tastefully woven into the design are accents and details from the rubber boom era and the colorful cultures of Portugal, Spain and Peru.

S.S. Beatrice The S.S. Beatrice boasts yacht-style light wood with blue and white finishes throughout, a renovated lobby featuring elegant mirrors, marble floors, a white Murano chandelier with blue shades, and a grand staircase made of nickel and black iron—a signature design element of Uniworld’s Super Ships. The ship’s redesigned lounge features sofas and chairs with hand-made upholstery, a parquet floor and upholstered ceiling panels, solar shades, and new USB ports allowing guests to charge anywhere they are sitting. The artwork throughout the ship includes pieces from Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Pino Signoretto. S.S. Beatrice offers four dining options all inspired by famous Austrian composers, including Mozart’s, the ship’s main restaurant; Wolfgang’s bar and lounge, and newly added Schubert’s and Max’s. For guests seeking an immersive culinary experience, Max’s restaurant offers intimate cooking classes where guests can create local European cuisines alongside the chef. Schubert’s, an 18-seat café located at the bow of the ship, offers guests shared plates from lunch through dinnertime. The cozy Austrian-styled eatery features menus reflecting the cuisine of the ship’s destinations.

S.S Catherine Uniworld is committed to building a fleet of ships that represents the absolute best in luxury river cruising, combining quality craftsmanship with high-tech innovations and custom-designed interiors. Our second Super Ship, S.S. Catherine, continues this proud tradition of excellence with sumptuous materials and meticulous attention to detail. The vessel’s opulent interiors include a two-story lobby with a specially commissioned Murano glass chandelier and whimsical life-size glass horse.

Mekong Jewel Debuting in January 2020, the Mekong Jewel is the newest and most luxurious ship on the Mekong river. This all-suite Super Ship includes two dining venues: one main restaurant and an al fresco eatery on the upper deck. The Mekong Jewel replaces the Mekong Navigator and was constructed with sustainable, eco-friendly materials, and features a swimming pool, spa, sauna and steam room, gym, hair salon, nail bar, two lounges, and a library.

Exploring Senegal's Vibrant Countryside By River Cruise

Posted: December 11, 2023 | Last updated: December 11, 2023

They say you can never go back, but that’s only true in part, and doesn’t apply to travel at all. Visit a place a second time, and you go with a seasoned pair of eyes, and all the buoyancy and confidence of familiarity. My second time in Saint-Louis, Senegal , I was better at fending off the touts, better at finding the best grub, better at dealing with the heat. I picked a better hotel—the La Résidence , with its antique whiff of cigar smoke, its old-world comforts, and its rooftop views of the city. And this time, I would go further—I’d be spending a week gliding up the Senegal River, 125 miles from Saint-Louis to the trading town of Podor, on a river cruiser, the Bou el Mogdad.

Saint-Louis is famous for its French Colonial style architecture —with its symmetry, high ceilings, and balconies—but the pastel hues of those buildings are as faded as their grandeur. Against it all, the Bou, freshly painted white as a sun-bleached bone, looks positively brand new. Yet the story of the Bou is also one of return; she is the prodigal daughter of Saint-Louis.

Built in a Dutch shipyard in 1950, the ship spent twenty years on the Senegal River, carrying people, mail, and goods back and forth from Saint-Louis to the port-city of Kayes in Mali. When the expanding road network put an end to that in the 1970s, the Bou left for greener waters, hauling goods and passengers first on Senegal’s Sine Saloum delta, then on the Casamance River, Guinea-Bissau, and Sierra Leone. Local entrepreneurship brought her back in 2005, refurbished her with 25 comfortable cabins, a plunge pool, a restaurant, a rooftop bar, and a library—turning it into the country’s unrivaled luxury vessel , maintaining a vintage glow.

After a preliminary night onboard—cocktails, dinner, and a welcome concert by a local band, we set out in the early morning, pushing against the drift of the caramel-brown river. Senegal was to starboard, Mauritania to port. The land was so flat that after four hours, the twin spires of the Grand Mosque of Saint-Louis were still visible.

We weren’t traveling fast—at three knots, we were going at little more than a brisk walking pace, a speed conditioned for simplicity. And it was that simplicity that made this return to Senegal so sweet. Gone was the bustle of Dakar, the crowds, noise, and smells of the city. There was only the soft thumping of the engine, and nowhere to be. I could spend hours reading my book and looking out over the countryside in quiet serenity.

To guide us along our passage, we had Ansoumana Badji, who’d been with the Bou since its return to the river. Over those hundreds of trips, he’d become a kind of a local celebrity, greeted as an emissary in every village and town we visited. He was the encyclopedic master key of the voyage, opening doors to school visits, village chiefs, local artisans, and wildlife. Add to that his natural capacity for languages; besides his mother tongue Jola, he could rattle off his lectures in fluent Wolof, French, English, and Spanish. By the end of our journey, his Portuguese and German were coming along, too.

The entire 125-mile journey, from Saint-Louis to Podor, crosses territory that was once part of the Waalo Kingdom, which covered an area the size of Hawai‘i’s Big Island. What looked in early November like dry, barren land of baobab and thorny acacia was regenerated by annual summertime overflows over the floodplain, the eponymous waalo , and filled the sluices cut into the earth to deliver water to the fields. Beyond the floodplain was the jeeri , the dry, sandy border of the Ferlo desert.

November through June, when the Bou operates, is the time of low water and bustling agricultural preparation. The banks were lined with garden plots—quadrants of onion, pepper, and tomatoes, drooping banana orchards, and thickets of sugar cane. Women hacked at the ground with mattocks. Herds of lanky zebu cattle the color of chocolate—white, dark, and milky brown—stood brisket-deep in the river while their minders watched us drift past. Occasionally there was a village, a collection of huts from which children would appear, running to the riverside to wave at the ship. Tall minarets of mosques marked the towns like spears stuck into the earth; occasionally the muezzin crackled to life to issue the adhān, the prayer-call to the faithful.

This blend of the pastoral and the religious made the Senegal River feel like an archaic vision of paradise, a strip of vivid life in an otherwise unforgiving environment. That’s what the first Portuguese visitors felt; on their maps, they marked it as a branch of the Biblical Gihon River, which flowed out of Eden.

That first afternoon we tendered into Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, where we saw cream-feathered pelicans in the hundreds. Afterwards, following hot showers, we assembled on the top deck for pre-dinner drinks (beer, gin and tonic, and ‘mojitos’ made from the local variations of mint and lime), and dancing. The staff were the barometer of fun: cruise director Maimouma Guisse, masseuse Absa Mar, and barman Petit Bâ all got us on our feet and kept us fed and watered.

The following days on board kept a similar routine—a light breakfast followed by a morning excursion. One day we visited a school in Dagana; on another we visited the cows and their herdsman in a Puleh village, then took horse drawn chariots along the riverside. After lunch, the heat of the day usually meant a small siesta before we set out again for an outing, returning around 7 p.m. for cocktails and dinner. The cuisine was Senegalese with a flourish—the roasted fish and chicken yassa and grilled lobster were like what one would find in the best restaurants of Dakar. One night, we ate tomato salad, beef knuckle on a bed of rice and chickpeas, and warm chocolate cake with ice cream, all of it accompanied by French wines; another was a grilled king fish, so large it was carried in by four men.

Over the next five days, I followed our progress on a good paper map I had bought in a Saint-Louis bookstore. Past the Diama dam, past the sugarcane fields of Richard Toll, past the tiny Guidakar forest, past clumps of houses that didn’t appear on the map at all, to our penultimate night near Doué. That last night we dined on shore by the light of oil lamps, at long tables with white linen tablecloths. The Bou’s chef, Djiby Thiam, had gone on ahead, to slow-roast two couscous-stuffed muttons over a low fire. The meat slipped off the bone, and our silhouettes danced against a backdrop of darkened greenery. Afterward, children from the village gave a dance performance, accompanied by a local griot, West Africa’s oral storytellers who carry history in their songs.

Later that night, back on board, full of food and drink, I sat listening to “Vltava” from Smetana’s Má vlast symphonic poem, as I watched the river drift by. That music, about Europe’s Moldau River, fits here too. It wasn’t the Czech countryside I was hearing, but the sounds of Senegalese river life . In the dueling flutes I heard the flight of the birds through the reeds; in the rising strings was the heat and the wind that bore down from the Sahara; in the woodwinds was the knitting together of toil and celebration, a reality of life here along the Senegal River, but common to countrysides around the world. Work and play, song and dance, day and night, all of it a lovely return to simplicity. As a relic of an older era of travel, the Bou el Mogdad had been a part-luxurious, part-sentimental journey along this river. They say you can never go back—but you can go far enough.

The Bou el Mogdad operates from November through April, when the weather is hot and dry. Trips between Saint-Louis and Podor take seven days, beginning in each town on a Saturday, and ending the following Friday. Excursions and activities for each are the same.

What It Costs

$900 USD for a standard cabin and $1300 USD for an en-suite “comfort” cabin, all-inclusive of food, drinks, transfers, and excursions. The Bou is equipped with free Wi-Fi. Spa-treatments, laundry, and gifts are available for purchase onboard.

Things To Do Travel

Cruising the lower mississippi river on american queen reveals a sleepy south.

My recent weeklong Mississippi River cruise on the American Queen took me back through history on the last overnight steam paddlewheeler plying the muddy waters between New Orleans and Memphis. Traveling the 640-mile-long Lower Mississippi let me discover Cajun and Creole cultures, visit alligator-populated bayous and tap my toes to jazz, blues and cartoon-like music from a steam calliope.

Built in 1995 and carrying more than 400 passengers, the American Queen is a replica of the long-gone original paddlewheelers, but its details are very authentic-looking. Paintings of those older boats in ports such as Louisville, Pittsburgh, Mackinac Island and Cleveland are in public spaces throughout the ship.

My sold-out voyage was framed around food, celebrating the collaboration between “America’s Test Kitchen” with Regina Charboneau, American Queen Voyages culinary ambassador, to bring flavors of the six rivers sailed by the cruise line to dining venues.

“We delved into the culinary history of North America’s riverside communities to bring travelers a taste of the past and present, with recipes celebrating the diverse flavors of the various regions,” said Bridget Lancaster, co-host of “America’s Test Kitchen” and its editorial director.

The two women led daily cooking demonstrations in the ship’s palatial two-story Grand Saloon.

The collaborative dishes introduced on the ship’s menu included those from towns along the Upper and Lower Mississippi; the Pacific Northwest; the Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee rivers; and Alaska’s Inside Passage. Get recipes, learn more about the American Test Kitchen and American Queen Voyages and discover the women’s kitchen techniques in an upcoming story.

A drought in many of the 31 states that provide water to keep the Mississippi River flowing meant delays for our cruise as the river silted up and needed dredging by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The many barges carrying freight backed up behind us as tinny notes from the steam calliope’s keyboard entertained those of us at the River Grill, perched on Deck 5 above the bright red paddlewheel carrying across the water to the barges. A reward of the delay was two nights spent in Natchez, where its sister ship the American Countess also was docked. Although it appears as a smaller version of the Queen from the outside, its interior is more like a modern hotel.

There’s not much to see along this part of the river because riverbank views are blocked by tall concrete levees built to prevent flooding and keep the river within its banks. This is rural cotton and sugar cane country, so settlements, which are further ashore, are few and far between. When the ship stopped so passengers could go ashore in St. Francisville and Natchez, it was secured to the levee and shoreside trees. Golf carts met passengers at the gangway to deliver them to buses for shore excursions.

An excursion with Cajun Pride Swamp Tours was my choice when we left the bus at the included Nottaway Mansion tour for an hour’s drive through sugar cane fields and through a meandering bayou absorbing overflows when rivers flood and change their course.

Upon arrival at the privately owned swamp, we boarded a flat-bottomed boat so our Cajun captain could share the lore of his people, who migrated to French-speaking Louisiana when they were expelled from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755. At first, his Cajun accent was difficult to understand, but our ears soon became accustomed to its musical French cadence, and we learned how “Acadian” in Canada became “Cajun” in Louisiana.

On cold days like this one, alligators customarily bury themselves in the mud, so our expectations to see them were low. But the reptiles are accustomed to being fed from the tour boats, and our captain lured them out with marshmallows. Raccoons competing for marshmallows from shore crept from the woods to steal them from the gators until the large reptiles crawled ashore to get their fill. We held our collective breaths fearing for the plump and furry raccoons.

“Alligators are territorial,” our guide told us, adding that hunting them is strictly regulated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He said many of those in the Cajun community live off the bounty of the bayous, valuing alligators as a valuable source of income for their meat and to make leather belts. But hunting license tags are issued by the Fish and Wildlife Service according to the number of alligators and the size of the area where they live. Fines are steep for those who violate the rules.

Later, on the bus trip back to the ship, another guide pointed out what appeared to be houseboats anchored beneath the highway, seeming suspended over the black bayou water. Basic and simple, they’re the year-round homes of the superstitious Cajuns and sport mirrors on their front doors to keep the devil away. Many believe in ghosts and apply their superstitions to their lives — such as believing the ends of a bread loaf should not be eaten or they’d never make ends meet.

It was Halloween, so ghost stories and other scary legends were shared.

That night, back aboard the ship, the Monster’s Ball, a gala Halloween party, drew costumed guests for a night of live-music revelry. Although the average age of passengers was likely in the 70s, many dancers recalled their rock ’n’ roll roots with lively moves and nimble footwork.

The American Queen, like other cruise line riverboats, structures shore time so passengers can join in seasonal celebrations ashore.

Lovely Natchez, although being shelled by a Union ironclad from the river, largely escaped damage during the Civil War. Historic structures are well-maintained, and the 14,000-person town goes all-out for Christmas with competitions among its garden clubs. Christmas markets are a seasonal treat where American Queen passengers buy sweet and savory foods to take back to the ship and quality handcrafts to bring home as gifts.
