LEGO IDEAS Set 40487: Sailboat Adventure

I invite you all to hop on board and come on a sailboat adventure with me as I review the latest LEGO Gift With Purchase (GWP), Set 40487.

I was provided this set to review by LEGO via Brickcentral but all opinions here are my own. The set is available from August 1st in LEGO Stores or at LEGO.com when spending over €200/$200/£200 and while stocks last. Stick around beyond the end of the review for some bonus shots too.

Learn the ropes – What’s in the box

The set contains 330 pieces. They are used to build a sailing boat on a small base, two minifigures, and a stand for the two included dolphins. It’s important to note that the Sailboat Adventure set is based on a design by my Brickcentral teammate @yc_solo . He submitted this boat build as a LEGO IDEAS competition entry… and won! The prize? His submission was converted into this real set.

Running a tight ship – Meet the crew

The instructions included in the set include words from YC_Solo explaining some of the sentiment and meaning in his set, one of the things revealed there is that the figures in the set represent him and his wife.

The male figure is the most noteworthy thanks to his new torso print. Though both figures look suitably nautical thanks to their sailers’ neckerchiefs and blue and white stripes. The male figure gets a pair of binoculars for looking out to sea while both crew members get a life vest to make sure they are nice and safe.

There are also two dolphins on a simple build using window panels to raise them up. It’s surprising to get two dolphins in the set, LEGO tends to include the bare minimum of animals so getting a pair feels a little deluxe.

Rock the boat – About the build

What of the main build? Not much has changed from the original IDEAS submission from what I can see.

Some additional gold parts used as a railing and for other details around the edge of the boat replace some original part usage. Again, these features give this set a nice prestigious feel. The only stickers in the set are those used to place the name of the vessel on its hull.

Building the set was certainly interesting. The boat is built on a couple of plates with some clear parts to give an impression of water. It’s a supporting part of the structure so cannot be easily removed. I hid it with a simulated ocean in most of my shots, but it does add something to the display value of the set. I found the sail to be a little frustrating to build, but it looks good once built and it is sturdier than I thought it was going to be during the build process.

The deck has several printed wooden planks and a small cabin. The cabin itself looks very nice but it’s not quite big enough to fit figures in, though you can pose one in the doorway.

There is a little space up front where minifigs can be positioned but the best position for them is at the rear with the tiller or on the two studs on the starboard side of the cabin.

A shot across the bows – BTS

I’ve never really had to simulate water in much of my photography but with this set, there really is no choice. I decided to keep things relatively dry and use blue cellophane. I also just used a bit of blue card for the backdrop. That’s probably the thing I’m least happy with in these photos.

For the night photos I simply switched to black. I also used some techniques for shooting rainfall that I picked up from @fourbrickstall

In some photos, I also used some cotton wool to simulate disturbed water, a facial mister, and water spray for additional water and atmosphere. I knew I also wanted to show @yc_solo using his binoculars so I made a crude cut out from cardboard to try and get that effect in-camera.

Sink or Swim – Final Thoughts

The Sailboat Adventure feels more premium than many GWP sets. This is down to everything from the exclusive torso, inclusion of two dolphins, gold lacquered parts to the fact it comes in a proper LEGO box, not the thin cardboard that GWP often comes in, and a proper IDEAS instruction book with a foreword by the designer. On top of that, there’s only one pair of stickers, those used for the name of the boat.

It’s a great-looking design that stays very faithful to the original submission and looks good on the shelf. The one criticism I can level at this build is that the ship does not easily remove from its stand and it’s probably not quite sturdy enough to be played with heavily. But I think most people will be using this in a more ornamental fashion.

My main gripe however is the required spend. It’s hard to criticize any “free” set for price but the main incentive to buy from LEGO is their gifts and loyalty points. This one requires a much bigger outlay than many previous GWP sets which will render it out of reach for some who may really want it.

It’s most likely this will end up in the hands of Star Wars collectors since there is a big new UCS release at the same time which will qualify you for this. (There’s a notable irony here for anyone that knows YC_Solo).

Ignoring the qualifying spend, this is a very good-looking display set with some nice parts. It’s also a bit different from other recent LEGO sets which adds to its appeal. Anyone who gets this set will find it really is shipshape.

In deep water – Bonus shots

With the review out of the way I told YC_solo I was going to have some fun with his included minifigure representation. So here are some bonus pictures for your enjoyment.

“Stop buying LEGO!” Indeed. LOL

I really love how you did the water and those rain shots are fantastic!

The cabin is indeed cramped, you can fit one minifigure in seated or sleeping position. The inside was slightly modified from my version, mine was white and smoother with some SNOT techniques in the central part of the hull but it was definitely more fragile. The front was also slightly modified (I had the front going out at an angle and parts to allow it, which didn’t help stability) but the back is a close 1-to-1 match.

BTW the ship can stand without the baseplate, unless you rotate the sail and it capsize. 😉 My version was even worse (because of the SNOT parts), it was resting on a smaller footprint.

Funnily I did have a version prior to submission where I had a the ship mounted on a baseplate but removed it because it exceeded the allowed 250 parts (the TLG designer “cheated” and added 80 parts to the set, and because the palm tree was removed, almost 90 more for the boat itself.)

So a hint for those who think the price tag is too high: it’s not my fault, TLG did that! LOL

Thanks so much again for the great review and amazing pictures! 🙂

Its possible I was nit-picking because I did not want to seem totally biased! I did try and fit a figure in the cabin and failed when I thought one should be able to lie in there. Also, I assumed it couldn’t be removed from the base just because of the way it was built, apologies for not putting that to the test. Again with the Price point, I get it. LEGO isn’t a charity and this is a set with 330 pieces it would be £$25-35 if they actually released it. So its fine. But many people do not spend £200 in one go, so the real shame is that the set cannot just be purchased 🙂

Its great though, and I am glad you liked the pics!

How to score the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487) GWP

July 30, 2021 By Jay Ong 2 Comments

lego sailboat ideas

It’s almost August 2021 where there’s a heap of new releases ready to drop on LEGO.com, like the UCS Republic Gunship or the Volkswagen T2 Campervan , or if you’re in North America – all the June/Summer releases .

To sweeten the deal, the 40487 Sailboat Adventures set will be available as a Gift with Purchase from LEGO.com , from 1 August onwards when you spend US$200 / £200 / AU$279 online.

LEGO VIP members get early access, from 1 – 3 August 2021, before the general release, which will be available from 4 – 29 August while stocks last.

lego sailboat ideas

This is a massively substantial gift with purchase (which explains the high purchase threshold), coming in at 330 pieces, and this year’s Vintage Car GWP as the second LEGO Ideas Gift with Purchase.

lego sailboat ideas

The set was the winner of the LEGO Ideas Dream Holiday contest , and designed by talented LEGO Instagrammer and Photographer @yc_solo .

This set is going to be exceedingly popular, not just because of its incredibly charming design, but as there are several big ticket sets and themes dropping on 1 August 2021, so I can absolutely see this one selling out immediately, so plan your purchases accordingly!

The LEGO Ideas 40487 Sailboat Adventures set will be available as a Gift with Purchase from LEGO.com , from 1 August onwards when you spend US$200 / £200 / AU$279 online.

What do you think of the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure set? Will you be trying to hit the purchase threshold to qualify for the set?

I’ve been waiting for a decent GWP before I order a couple of things (I’m thinking F.R.I.E.N.D.S Apartments together with Seinfeld) but the extremely limited nature of the freebie annoys me, having missed out on January’s car (I think I might have been waiting for a new set to be released at the time) , as it’s going to benefit resellers more than more selective buyers. They should make enough of these things to last a few weeks, if not the whole month, rather than have them go out of stock in days if not hours.

I’d love this, but I’m too old to go through all the hoops required to make sure I’m first in the queue. It’d be great if Lego has actually made enough of them for everyone who will doubtless want one. I’ll have a go at a civilised hour on Sunday if there’s anything I want that’s actually in stock.

Review – LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487)!

Greg

Whilst building this LEGO Ideas sets live over on our Instagram page, a viewer asked “ What’s your favourite GWP set “, it was a question that surprisingly had me stumped and one I couldn’t really answer. It wasn’t until after the stream ended, and I sat down to snap a few photos for this review, that I realised it was this one – LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487) !

I’ll run through what’s in the box, the build itself, and what I think of it below. As usual I’ll give it a rating out of 10 and a breakdown of each rateable section.

The Box and Contents:

As with most LEGO sets it’s the box that grabs your attention first, although the newer 18+ themed boxes are less desirable showing just the build on a darker background.

lego sailboat ideas

This set has to be one of the better designed and produced boxes as both front and back look equally as good and features a calming and pleasant Sunset scene.

Inside the box there is an instruction manual, two numbered bags but each number has three bags, a very small sticker sheet, and two gold bendy rods.

lego sailboat ideas

The manual has a double page spread on the fan that originally designed and created the Sailboat model, LEGO Instagrammer and photographer @yc_solo aka Yan Chevalier . It explores his LEGO Ideas contest submission and the story behind it in quite an enjoyable read.

As I mentioned earlier, building this live on Instagram I couldn’t really appreciate the build as much as I’d like, it wasn’t until I sat down afterwards and took the photos for this review that I really saw the set for what it is, an aesthetically pleasing and beautiful model!

lego sailboat ideas

The parts you get are so varied and make most sets weep, from the multiple SNOT ( studs not on top ) elements to the uniquely curved bits that make up the Hull, there is so much on offer in a relatively small set.

Bag one has us build the small ‘ocean’ base, the Hull of the boat, and the decoration on it. As you start building the Hull, it seems a little odd and doesn’t look quite right, this is due to the small gaps left by the wood-effect tiles and bare studs. Once the sides of the boat are applied this all disappears and out of sight, making the Hull look as it should.

lego sailboat ideas

We also apply the two stickers here also, are the bow of the Sailboat. The sticker reads ‘ Éloïse ‘ which is in fact the creator’s Daughters name!

The part in particular I like about this are the two gold coloured rods that run along both sides of the boat, they are held reasonably well and attached by several 1×1 clips. I think it’s the curve of each bar that really sets the build off and gives it that elegant look.

Bag two sees the addition of the small but considerably spacious cabin area, I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t expecting it to be open or removable.

Remove the white canopy and you’ll find what resembles a seating area complete with a table. Also notice the port-holes on either side, now that is good part usage!

lego sailboat ideas

Bag two also makes the sail, which is entirely brick-built and comes with a plethora of white bricks, including giant slopes!

The whole is a whopping 19 bricks high and hinged to either side of the mast, which allows it to move freely in the wind. The overall shape is very pleasing to the eye also along with the mast and ropes.

The construction of it is, at times, quite confusing as you start off with mast and the many Technic elements such as bars connectors, and tubes. Fitting the sail section by section as you move up the mast is somewhat enjoyable, trying to figure out which side they go and what slides where and connects to what.

lego sailboat ideas

LEGO could have included fabric sails but I personally don’t think they would have the same impact as these brick-built ones. The last couple of LEGO Ships have indeed been brick-built ( 3in1 Pirate Ship ).

Also included is a small side build that represents two Dolphins jumping out of the water alongside the Sailboat. The parts used here are simple with a handful of clear cheese slopes, two larger crear bricks/windows, and crystals.

Sadly the Dolphin figures aren’t or unique to this set but they’re always a joy to have and they make for great additions to any scene or MOC.

lego sailboat ideas

The Minifigures:

lego sailboat ideas

Both Minifigures match the set well and definitely look the part, but apart from the torsos there isn’t anything particularly unique about them. We have seen the female torso multiple times most notably in the LEGO Downtown Diner (10260) set.

The male torso is where we see the first set exclusive part, after a quick BrickOwl search as to what sets this particular bit comes in it only shows the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487) !

As usual all the designs and prints are done to the high LEGO standard we know and love. I especially like the torsos as they’re great for MOCs and other scenes.

lego sailboat ideas

Conclusion:

In short the LEGO Ideas Sailboat Adventure (40487) is beautiful and looking back at it now I see why others went for the GWP promotion and forked out the £200 needed.

As GWPs go it is certainly up there with the best of them, and one of my personal favourites.

The Build was enjoyable and straightforward, there weren’t many new techniques taught here but not every set has to be super innovative. The brick-built sail fulfils that on its own.

Both Minifigures are good although apart from the male torso nothing is exclusive to the set.

This will sit proudly amongst any LEGO fans display and sure to be centre of attention and many conversation starters.

Thank you for joining us and reading our review, we really do appreciate your time. Please feel free to leave us a comment below of what you thought about it and the set in question.

Review: LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase “Sailboat Adventures” 40487

Straight from LEGO Ideas’ competition, ‘Build that holiday into THAT holiday!’, comes the newest Gift-with-purchase.

Lego 40487 – lego ideas sailboat adventures.

Available from LEGO.com and LEGO Stores from 1st August 2021.

LEGO 40487 – LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase “Sailing Adventures

The original design made by @yc_solo aka. Yan Chevalier, over on LEGO Ideas. Took out the top prize, and Yan was lucky to have his model turned into the newest GWP promotion.

This little set is an incredibly faithful rendition of yc_solo’s work, which can be seen here . “Sailing Ship Adventure”, but how does it hold up overall? Will it sink, or will it float?

First thing I have to talk about is the box. This thing immediately captivated me with the warm-toned sunset. Its a more relaxed nature. Compared to the stark stoic blues that come with every LEGO City set. There are some seagulls shown flying high in the sky, which alludes back to Yan’s original submission, which came with a seagull.

The back of the box isn’t something we haven’t seen before, but is still nicely laid out to give a clear idea of what to expect in the set. It’s worth noting that the original design did also include a palm tree build on the side. But LEGO has instead forsaken that and instead made a base for the boat to rest on.

For the actual build itself, this thing is gorgeous. Fortunately, it isn’t just the smoke and mirrors of the box that make me like this set. It’s something about the quaint and simplistic style of the boat mixed with small details here and there to keep things fresh. The exterior of the ship also showcases the only sticker of the set.

The ship’s name, Eloise, which the designer says was named after his daughter. As a dad, this warms my heart.

LEGO 40487 – LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase “Sailing Adventures

Our boat’s decking focuses on using the burnt orange colouring and adds a few printed 1×4 wood textured tiles to break it up a little bit. There’s something quite captivating about the colour palate being a mix of dark tan, gold, white and burnt orange that just works. It’s also a small odd thing to note, but the build technically uses two different golds. As the top of the canopy uses a shinier gold compared to the rest of the boat. Not sure why.

Our midsection of the build is technically removable, but doesn’t offer our figures a nice cosy place to rest for the evening. Normally in these types of boats, there would be a small crawlspace for occupants to recess to, but not this time.

Our outer edges of the boat are adorned in gold detailing from a gold flex tube that extends the entire length of the boat. With gold bar detailing, before joining at the bow. It’s a nice detail that wasn’t compromised from the original design. And yes, the anchor does also detach as to park the boat.

LEGO 40487 – LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase “Sailing Adventures

As for the sail itself, this thing is entirely brick-built and has a bit of weight to it, but not enough to throw the boat overboard. When the boat is removed from its stand, turning the sails from one side to the other is sure to knock it over. But if kept upright and straight, the boat still stands.

I am very happy with this brick-built option, as plate-built sails are often “visually noisy” with the number of studs. And fabric sails introduce a sense of collectability/dependability on them. Meaning that you can’t just replicate a set like this with parts from home if you wanted to make another one.

LEGO 40487 – LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase “Sailing Adventures

Oh, and there are dolphins here too! They use a very basic structure and water splash effect. But it is exactly what the original designer had when he submitted to LEGO Ideas. It captures the momentum perfectly. And who doesn’t like dolphins?

LEGO 40487 – LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase “Sailing Adventures

Minifigures

The figures that come with the set do sport some relatively rarer torso for generic figures, but I ultimately can see that they are based on the original designer and his wife. Their “adventure they are yet to have”. They’re the perfect little addition to what is otherwise a cute little set.

LEGO 40487 – LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase “Sailing Adventures

Overall thoughts? This thing is quite exquisite. I don’t think I have enjoyed a LEGO Gift-With-Purchase as much as I have with this set in quite a long time. It’s an aesthetically pleasing set with small details and features that make me wish I knew how to sail myself.

If you have the opportunity to get this set, pick it up. It’s gorgeous and would easily fit in with any city landscape; heck, with a few small modifications, it could work within medieval setups too.

If you can get it, grab it.

The Lego D&D set has been revealed, so here's everything I noticed as a D&D fan

Perception check!

Lego Beholder on a table covered with dice, with a nearby hand holding a minifigure

The new Lego D&D set has finally broken cover, and it's a monster. In some cases, quite literally – there are many classic Dungeons & Dragons foes included within the mega kit.

Due to launch this April 4 (or April 1, if you're part of the free Insider program at Lego), Lego Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale is made up of more than 3,700 pieces, has half-a-dozen adventurer minifigures under its belt, and features multiple creatures for them to tangle with. Yes, the Lego D&D set has a price to match – it's $359.99 at the Lego store or £314.99 if you're based in the UK . But that's fairly par for the course in terms of the best Lego sets , and there's honestly more here than I was anticipating. Especially because it includes a "specially created Dungeons & Dragons adventure book, created in partnership by Wizards of the Coast and the LEGO Group, to offer a completely new and unique play experience."

That's why I've been going over the Lego D&D reveal with a fine-tooth comb to uncover all those juicy Easter eggs – as a level 20 nerd when it comes to the best tabletop RPGs , this is kinda like Christmas for me. Alongside these nods, you'll also find more information about the Lego D&D set itself below, including that exclusive adventure.

Lego Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale

This kit is based on the community-submitted design by Lucas Bolt, and they worked closely with the Lego design team to bring this set to life. Comprised of 3,745 pieces and standing at 19 inches (48cm) tall, this is a pretty mighty build on the whole. Particularly because of the adventure written by D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast that allows you to give this kit a practical use as well as an aesthetic one.

Apparently, this adventure will see "players start in a tavern, uncover a sorcerer’s villainous scheme, and... face off against a fire-breathing foe!" It'll be run by TV and voice actor Anjali Bhimani this April 1 for D&D content creator Ginny Di, Critical Role's Luis Carazo, Lucas Bolt, and Lego designer Jordan Scott. You'll be able to catch it on the official D&D YouTube channel or Lego's site.

Anyway. Here's what I've spotted so far:

  • Myconids: This is slightly harder to spot, but is one of the coolest features of the Lego D&D set. Hidden away at the back in the general images are these mushroom folk, and they're just adorable as minifigures.
  • Gelatinous Cube: Following a tease on Lego's social media, the least scary-looking D&D monster is slowly wobbling towards our heroes in this set. This teeny version contains a skull and what looks to be either a shield or, if I want to push the boat out, a badge for the Zhentarim (a criminal organization in D&D).
  • Mimic: We've already had one of these shapeshifting monsters teased via Lego's social media, and although the classic treasure chest variant isn't visible… well, let's just say I don't trust this tavern one bit. The oddly sticky-looking roof, a very suspicious name (the 'Inn Plain Sight'), and what might just be a purple tongue sticking out from under the stairs makes me wonder if the whole building is, in fact, a Mimic. That may be a stretch, but it'd be a cool one nonetheless.
  • Ooze: Speaking of that weird pink-purple mass under the stairs, it may possibly be an ooze. I can't get a good angle on it, but it definitely looks suspect.
  • Dragon cultist: I don't know about you, but I'm getting weird vibes from the innkeeper with his dragon necklace. The Cult of the Dragon is a regular pain in adventurers' butts during D&D, so this would be a fun nod to those enemies… and potentially a good plot hook for the accompanying adventure.
  • Owlbear: Although it's not immediately obvious visible in some of the images on the Lego store, you can see the iconic D&D creature that is part bear, part owl in the set's general image.
  • Displacer Beast: You don't want to be on the business end of these panther-like monsters, so the adventurers in this pack have their work cut out for them.
  • Beholder: Another iconic monster put front and center are my beloved beholders. These eye-creatures are infamously paranoid, powerful, and deranged.
  • Dungeon staples: There are numerous little nods to dungeon-delving cliches in this set, so rather than listing them individually, I'll just round them up here. First up is obviously the red dragon end boss (called Cinderhowl) guarding its egg seen at the top of the tower, along with the most iconic minions – a trio of skeleton goons. A shield bearing a beholder likeness can also be seen tucked away in the set too, alongside green-flamed candles that give big 'evil wizard' energy. A magic weapon (possibly made from a dragon's tooth?) can also be seen, which is only right – what's a dungeon without some cool loot, after all? Questing for this gear is a traditional adventuring party of an orc Rogue, dragonborn Bard, gnome Fighter, elf Wizard, and dwarf Cleric.

Regarding the design, Bolt said that "the Dungeons & Dragons theme combined with my love of history, fantasy and making games, inspired me to create a playable layout with different challenges and routes to explore. I had so much fun designing this piece, and it is a real privilege seeing my design developed into a detailed LEGO set to celebrate 50 years of the iconic game."

Global Play Lead for D&D, Dan Rawson, added that "Lego bricks and Dungeons & Dragons have been used by fans to generate stories and build adventures for so long that bringing these two creative brands together during our 50th Anniversary felt like a no-brainer. With the amazing LEGO Ideas set designed by Lucas Bolt, the adventure package available on D&D Beyond, and the Lego Minifigure series coming this fall, fans will have so many new sparks of imagination available to enjoy creating fantasy stories together with friends and family."

This set will launch on April 1 if you sign up to be a free Lego Insider, or April 4 for everyone else.
