Broadblue 435

The Broadblue 435, a refinement of the Broadblue 42 we sailed as part of last fall’s Boat of the Year judging, would be a good choice for a bluewater-bound couple joined occasionally by a friend or two.

The Broadblue sailed well in light air (with its full main and large reacher, it beam-reached at 7.7 knots in 11 to 12 knots true), a plus for a passagemaker seeking steady progress over the sea miles. Its 776 square feet of canvas is divided into a seamanlike cutter rig that’s easily managed and presents numerous storm-canvas and downwind-sail combinations.

The Broadblue’s hulls boast watertight bulkheads fore and aft and solid fiberglass below the waterline; the topsides and deck are glass over endgrain balsa core. They’re built to the highest European Union standard, Category A (Ocean), with Lloyd’s-approved materials.

The 435’s decks are wide, clean, and flat, and its house is low and both aero- and hydrodynamic, presenting few surfaces for green water and wind to gain a purchase. In the cockpit are three laz-arettes; lockers for propane, chain, and other gear are just aft of the trampoline. The only differences between the Broadblue 435 and the earlier 42 are the 18 inches added to the lower aft steps, above the waterline, and the handrails on the insides of the boarding platforms to help crew step in and out of a dinghy.

The cockpit is relatively narrow, with wide decks on either side, preventing significant volumes of seawater from staying aboard. The curved cockpit table nestles into the starboard settee and is, thus, out of the way. The two-person, cushioned, adjustable-height helm station, to port, has a double-concave backrest that provides a snug perch for driver and crew. Main and spinnaker halyards, plus reefing lines and topping lift, are led aft through jammers to a two-speed electric winch mounted on the housetop to starboard, within easy reach, as are the two-speed manual genoa winches.

To move below is to step into a grated well, over a substantial bridgedeck, through sliding doors, then down into the bright, cheerful saloon. To starboard is the dinette with a folding table that seats eight. To port is an aft-facing corner nav station, with no fiddles and with a round seat on an arm that swings a little too readily to be efficient in a seaway.

Forward, to port, is a U-shaped galley that abuts the dinette. Countertops are made of Formstone Acrylics, a durable, Corian-type surface. Ergonomic fiddles on the saloon furniture double as handholds. Joiner work is well done, soft edged, and nicely finished.

Down three steps to port on the “owner version” we sailed is a head, aft of which is a stateroom with full queen, a two-door hanging locker, and a hatch and an opening port for ventilation. Forward of the head is a cabin with a double berth, hanging locker, and storage cabinets. The owner’s hull, to starboard, has cabinets and shelves and a four-drawer desk with another round seat that swings (again, too readily) out of the way. The aft cabin has a queen berth; forward is a head with a separate shower stall. Shorthanded crews will like the twin-stateroom version’s interior, with two aft cabins with queens, guest quarters (including a settee amidships, a head/ shower, and walk-in storage) to port, and owner’s office and large head to starboard.

With its low, graceful house; high, fine bows; aft-tapering freeboard; and full-battened, roachy main, this handsome, purposeful-looking vessel will turn heads when sailing into any anchorage. Even more important, it has the design, construction, and rig to get you there in the first place.

The Broadblue 385 catamaran is a well designed, well maintained Luxury catamaran. They were designed to be a fast, responsive, coastal or blue water cruiser and have rapidly gained a reputation as a first class world cruising catamaran for short handed sailing. Designed to sail well on all points of sailing, even loaded for cruising, and in particular, will sail close winded and tack quickly.

These boats meet the highest European Union boatbuilding standard, which can be seen in its six flotation compartments and aluminum-framed glass windows. Both one-piece hull and deck mouldings are hand laid glassfibre, using powder – bound mat, biaxial clothes, woven rovings, isopthalic resin. Below the waterline, the hulls are solid laminate,.5 to 1.25 inches thick, with Kevlar reinforcing in high-load areas, while the topsides and deck incorporate closed cell structural foam (post 2007). The deck has an integrally moulded non – slip finish.

Rudders are skeg hung on stainless steel stocks with self-lubricating bearings. The steering system is hydraulic with the rudders linked together with a cross-link beam. The hydraulic arm is attached direct to the rudder shaft. The port rudder has an access cover above and is designed to accept an emergency tiller. The hull and deck join is fully bonded and protected by a substantial rubbing strake. Many of the structural bulkheads are of vacuum bagged foam core, and when the interior furniture is fully bonded, in a light and stiff ‘honeycomb’ structure is created. The 385 is virtually unsinkable due to its watertight bulkheads and buoyancy compartments fore and aft. The keels are integrally moulded and sealed off from the hulls forming a double bottom.

The 385 is designed for the cruising couple who need more comfort and storage aboard. The galley and saloon are very spacious and contain handcrafted joinery. The striking bows, along with the specially designed bridgedeck, are the result of thirty years of design experience. This design allows the boat to sail over the waves with less water over the bow creating a dry, smooth, seakindly ride with sparkling sailing performance.
