Polaris, the brightest star in the constellations, is also known as the Pole Star. It’s an apt name for an ice-class superyacht designed to explore the Polar regions. Even more so when the owners’ desired landscape of frozen tundra is mirrored in the crazy amount of onboard glass and crystal. If Disney princess Elsa ever went to sea, she’d feel at home aboard Polaris .

The 230-foot yacht is the largest new build to emerge from Rossinavi , with an exterior and interior by Enrico Gobbi’s Italian Team for Design. Belowdecks, the yacht features diesel-electric propulsion and structural ice certification on the hull. But when guests set foot on the main aft deck, it’s the 20-foot infinity whirlpool that grabs their attention. Move inside and an indoor waterfall that flows over a back-lit onyx wall in the main salon cements the first impressions.

“The owners are passionate about the use of clear materials,” Valentina Giani, a spokesperson for Rossinavi, told Robb Report, during an in-depth tour in Monaco. She points out a collection of handmade Venetian glass sculptures. “Water is another common theme,” she added, referencing the second onboard waterfall located on the owner’s private terrace.

Large, custom crystal chandeliers made in the Czech Republic hang from ceilings in nearly every room. The cinema located in the middle of the main deck—positioned for optimum sound-proofing—is sectioned off from the rest of the open-plan layout with crystal-covered wall dividers. A glass-fronted wine cellar is a popular addition, neatly disguised behind a backlit onyx screen.

And the central staircase that soars through four decks features a – you guessed it – colossal crystal pendant, strengthened with steel.

“The crystal-armored cinema wall was inspired by a joint trip we took together to the Baccarat hotel in New York, which features crystal cladding on the exterior of the building,” said Enrico Gobbi. “And the crystal stairwell lighting feature has been designed to create movement in all the lobbies to avoid a banal vertical chandelier. The large rings produce light scenes that are unique to crystal.”

Natural stones are combined with different marbles in each cabin. Intricate woven Carrera marble tiling is paired with pops of accent colors, vivid artwork and Murano glass mosaics. Underfoot, wood flooring features bronze inlays. On board Polaris , artisanal craftsmanship rules, from the master bathroom taps to bespoke wardrobe handles. Outdoors, loose furniture by Paolo Lenti and Summit add a chic touch.

Commissioned by a client whose previous yacht also went under the same name, Polaris was completed earlier this year and delivered to her owner in the spring. One of the owner’s key requests was to move the formal dining table outside, and shelter it with a heated cover. That design nods to a growing trend for casual, three-season alfresco living among yacht owners. But it also formed part of a wider owner’s brief to move away from traditional yacht layouts.

“For the owner, privacy is important,” said Gobbi. “He loves high decks and the higher panoramic views it affords, rather than being close to the sea. The upper deck is elevated enough that no one can see inside the master cabin.”

The owner also requested a supersized spa, characterized by an opening into the sea. “It’s not positioned in the traditional position aft but forward, with a side view to ensure privacy,” says Gobbi.

The lower deck wellness center includes a gym, sauna, hammam, massage room and yoga area, a Zen space for guests to return to after a day spent in harsh climates.

Consideration has also been given to guests’ exploration away from the mothership. A supersized tender garage accommodates up to six jet skis and two tenders, including a 33-foot full-custom limousine with styling that echoes the yacht.

“Facilitating the yachting lifestyle was central to the owner’s brief,” said Gobbi. “He did not want a floating villa, but large panoramic views and placing the observation lounge on his private deck were important details.”

A slender exterior design was the final determining factor. “The superstructure is not huge because Polaris was built to cruise all the seas of the world,” says Gobbi. “And that’s what the owner intends to do.”

Meet the 230-Foot ‘Polaris,’ Rossinavi’s Largest Superyacht Yet

After four long years of construction, Rossinavi ’s biggest ever superyacht has officially hit the high seas. The vessel, which measures 230 feet from tip to tail, left the Italian shipyard last Friday to embark on new ocean adventures.

Previously known as Project King Shark, the steel-hulled behemoth now goes by the name of Polaris , fitting since she can handle the most extreme polar regions. The ice-class vessel was commissioned by a private client and is first and foremost an explorer, although that doesn’t mean she’s short on luxury.

Polaris features interior and exterior design by the talented Enrico Gobbi of Team for Design . She sports clean, elegant lines and continuous black windows that are not only a strong visual statement but also afford sweeping sea views.

The 1,542GT interior, meanwhile, reflects the client’s decidedly refined personal taste. Textiles, furniture and materials were all sourced from high-end international brands and together create an atmosphere that Rossinavi describes as “luxurious and distinctive, yet warm and welcoming.”

Polaris can sleep up to 12 guests across six generous cabins, along with 17 crew in 10 crew cabins. The owner’s suite is, of course, the standout, offering its own dedicated deck and private terrace with an ultra-zen waterfall to boot.

On top of that, Polaris has amenities aplenty, including yet another waterfall, a soundproof cinema on the main deck, a 20-foot infinity pool, and a wellness center that offers a fully equipped gym, sauna, hammam, massage room and yoga area. There’s also space for six jet skis and two tenders, one of which is a custom 33-foot limo tender built by Rossinavi.

The superyacht features the latest diesel-electric propulsion, which promises to improve performance and lower fuel consumption. She can hit a max speed of 17 knots and cover 6,000 nautical miles when sitting at her cruising speed of 15 knots. She is also equipped with a dynamic anchoring system that allows her to set up shop wherever needed, from the warm waters of the Caribbean to the sub-zero Arctic.

Rossinavi Launches 70m Ice-Class Superyacht Polaris

Italian shipyard Rossinavi has presented in their facility of Viareggio its latest superyacht, Polaris, a 70-metre vessel, the largest built by the yard and able to navigate in extreme ice conditions, including the polar areas.

Commissioned by a private client and previously known as Project King Shark, Polaris is a 1,542GT motor yacht developed with an emphasis on yachting lifestyle, able to move from the warm waters of the Caribbean to the sub-zero conditions. Venice-based architecture and design practice Enrico Gobbi – Team for Design, a longstanding collaborator of Rossinavi’s, is responsible for the interior styling and exterior design of Polaris.

Key design specifications include:

Owner’s deck with a private terrace crowned by a surrounding waterfall, which gives zen vibes.

6m-long infinity pool located aft on the main deck, equipped with a whirlpool system.

Ample storage space that can accommodate up to six jet skis and two tenders, including a 10m full-custom limousine tender in-house built by Rossinavi.

Indoor waterfall that flows over a back-lighted onyx wall in the main salon.

Soundproof cinema room in the main deck surrounded by wall dividers covered with precious crystal staves.

Wellness centre, which includes a fully equipped gym, a sauna, a hammam, a massage room, yoga area, etc.

It is highly unusual for boats in the Ice Class category to have an elegant exterior appearance. With this in mind, Polaris is positioned advantageously to favour the exploration of unusual and exciting natural environments, such as Polar Regions, without sacrificing sophisticated design or comfort. Polaris also features the latest diesel-electric propulsion. This is of note because the onboard power management allows to valorise the fuel consumptions, giving advantages in terms of performance and emissions.

Another worth-mentioning onboard technology is the Satellite Dynamic System that allows the positioning for ‘dynamic anchoring’ wherever needed, even in extreme weather scenarios.

“The neat and elegant shapes of the yacht are underlined by long, continuous black window surfaces with curved details that soften up and characterise the overall cleanness of the superstructure. Our aim here was to open up the interiors towards the exterior, ensuring an ongoing view of the sea through the decks. This was achieved not by creating huge invasive openings but by instead designing refined, long and slender windows with which we were able to achieve the same goal,” says Enrico Gobbi of Enrico Gobbi – Team for Design.

The interior design, developed in collaboration with Carlo Lionetti, co-director of Team for Design, is contemporary and enriched by eclectic hints inspired by the client’s personal taste, which include precious coating materials that characterise all areas, along with refined details, prestigious textiles and loose furniture items sourced from high end international brands, bestowing on the whole interior a luxurious and distinctive, yet warm and welcoming, atmosphere.

“After four years under construction, we are extremely proud to present this grand superyacht. Polaris is a 70m vessel where our construction skills and technical know-how are perfectly combined. The complexity of this project required a very specific phased approach thanks to the skills we have acquired. Polaris features diesel-electric propulsion and structural ice certification. It is also able to house a full custom limo tender, entirely built in our shipyard. Polaris is the masterpiece where lines and elegance boasts the harmony typical of a modern yacht,” says Federico Rossi, Chief Operating Officer of Rossinavi.

Italian shipyard Rossinavi has announced the launch of its 70.2m/230.4ft luxury expedition yacht POLARIS , the largest vessel so far built by the shipyard and designed to navigate polar regions with an ice-class hull.

Previously known as PROJECT KING SHARK, she was commissioned by a private client and is designed with exterior and interior styling from Enrico Gobbi with naval architecture by Arrabito Naval Architects .

The full displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure are designed for cruising the world over, from the tropical Caribbean islands close to the equator to the icy wonderlands of Greenland or Antarctica . The 1,542 GT volume provides plenty of space onboard for amenities to fill the hours while cruising, and the contemporary interiors offer the utmost comfort and impressive entertainment spaces for hosting celebrations.

There is also diesel-electric propulsion for optimum performance, efficiency and reduced environmental impact, and the twin Marelli Motori 1,866 kW electric motors and triple Cat C32 1,081 bkW generators plus pair of Cat C9.3 355 bkW generators give a top speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 15 knots and a range of more than 6,000 nautical miles.

The accommodation sleeps up to 12 guests across six en-suite cabins, while the crew of 17 are accommodated over 10 cabins.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

The luxurious atmosphere of this place, the view and the location make it quite outstanding. We had dinner here with friends and the dishes were amazing, accompanied by a chilled bottle of Chablis, it really made me feel as if it was a part of... the classic Russian movie. More
