Beneteau’s Oceanis Yacht 62 – tested and reviewed

Beneteau’s oceanis yacht 62 is the latest leviathan from the french giant. sam jefferson investigates what the big fuss is all about.

giant 62 yacht

I t wasn’t long ago that yachts in the 60-70ft bracket were largely being built by semi custom yards which tailored these giant boats to the requirements of clients – generally at a premium price. The idea that mass producers would ever dabble in these markets seemed a remote one. After all, the ‘big four’ of yacht manufacturing (Hanse, Bavaria, Beneteau and Jeanneau) all rely on churning out huge volumes of yachts at relatively low prices in order to make a profit. It didn’t seem likely that they would make a play for this market, yet the last couple of years have seen that concept shattered.

Jeanneau made the first play with its 64 and Hanse followed suit with its huge 675. To the surprise of some, both have been able to turn a healthy margin of profit by producing unprecedented numbers of these big boats. It was only a matter of time before Beneteau decided it would muscle in on the act.

The result is the Oceanis Yacht 62. Confusingly, this is a yacht in a separate bracket altogether from the Oceanis range and is actually the first of an entirely new line of yachts that will eventually feature a 73ft flagship. The 62 is also a definite departure for the Beneteau group in terms of styling. It has turned to its tried and tested Berret/Racoupeau design team but they have worked alongside Italian designer Pierangelo Andreani, who previously worked on their Monte Carlo motoryacht range, for the styling. The remit has been to be bold and also adopt some of the motoryacht styling – an approach pioneered by Jeanneau in its 64.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

The result is certainly startling and definitely modern to the point of being brutalist. There’s a generous amount of freeboard, while the modern trend for squaring things off has been taken to new lengths – or angles. This angular approach is further exemplified by a thick black stripe running along the middle of the topsides. Sort of like an Oreo in reverse if you know what I mean. Anyway, this serves the purpose of creating the illusion of less freeboard and also hiding a number of huge portlights in the side of the hull which would otherwise tend to disrupt the look and lines of the boat. As with all recent Beneteaus, she features that distinctive arch over the cockpit which isn’t to everyone’s taste, but certainly provides a practical and sensible solution to where to site the mainsheet on a cruising yacht. No question: she is a striking yacht.

Step aboard and you immediately realise that she is also a genuinely huge yacht. There’s simply acres of deck space, even compared with a 50-footer, and it is here where the motorboat styling is perhaps most noticeable. The cockpit is divided into two fairly distinct areas, with a large communal seating area forward which is sectioned off from the ‘working’ area of the yacht further aft by two solid pods with the wheels and all the winches just aft. This means that, with all the sail controls led through channels in the deckhead and emerging from the cockpit coamings right next to the twin helming positions, the forward part of the cockpit is entirely devoid of ropes. This makes for a simply huge area to sunbathe and socialise.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

The instruments are also let into the coamings, with the remainder built into substantial pods on the steering pedestals. With a plethora of push-button controls for furling both the mainsail and headsail, everything is very much to hand for the helmsman. Meanwhile, the rise of the electric winch means that there is no doubt that, despite this yacht’s substantial size, she’s easy to handle shorthanded.

Aft of the helming station is a massive drop-down bathing platform which is accessed from either port or starboard by substantial fixed steps that look like something off a superyacht. The tender garage follows that theme, featuring an elaborate pull-out track for ease of deploying the dinghy, with everything done electrically. The tender garage is 3.5m by 1.7m, so this is far more practical than most equivalents seen on large cruising yachts. Between the steps down to the bathing platform is a bench that lifts up to reveal a sink and barbecue area. There is no question that this is a yacht optimised for lazy Mediterranean cruising.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

Head forward along broad side decks with decent handholds and there is another lounging area let into the deckhead. Retractable cleats abound and the general feel is of high quality. Up at the bow there is a modest crew quarters that can double as storage, while the anchor is set well outboard on a substantial stainless steel bow roller. This is also utilised for setting the Code 0.

The interior volume has actually been cut down substantially on the 62 by the huge tender garage and also the crew quarters forward. Yet this is such a voluminous vessel that the saloon still feels genuinely very large. The layout is pretty straightforward with a palatial owner’s cabin forward featuring an en suite. There are two smaller but still generous doubles aft. The starboard aft berth has an en suite, while to port there is the option of either one double with en suite or a smaller bunk room instead. In the saloon, the galley runs longitudinally down the starboard side with the main living area and chart table to port. The chart table is decently proportioned and sensibly situated nice and close to the cockpit.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62 - Interior

The styling is very modern and clean; it’s very uncluttered and most appliances are hidden behind covers to the point where it’s hard to identify exactly what the galley is until you start lifting up a few of them. There is just the slightly bland feel of a Travelodge permeating throughout. It is a supremely light and pleasant place to be, however.

The forward cabin in particular is a triumph of comfort, with a real feeling of space and luxury plus masses of headroom. As you’d expect, the yacht is absolutely loaded with electric gizmos and the options list is substantial. You can stick a washer/dryer in a short corridor that leads from the saloon to the owner’s suite, for example.

The day of my test sail was one of those Mediterranean days where you wake up to a flat calm and spend the remainder of the day praying for the sea breeze to kick in. This did happen, but painfully slowly, so we started the test with about 8kt of breeze that reluctantly built to 12kt at its peak. Given that the 62 weighs a substantial 24,000kg, I was interested to see how she would perform at lugging a dishwasher, fridge freezer, washing machine and a million other gizmos around in a fickle breeze.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62 - Interior

Before that, however, we had to get out of our berth and, even in the calm conditions, this might have proven a challenge on such a large yacht. Yet times have changed: bow thrusters, stern thrusters and even side thrusters mean that such operations do not have to be intimidating. You can turn the 62 on a sixpence and she’s far easier and more sympathetic to handle than a 30ft-long keel yacht. It’s part of the reason that manufacturers have been able to introduce larger and larger yachts to their customers: by and large, these yachts are designed to be handled by their owners, not a paid crew, to this end, everything is optimised for effortless handling. This point was amply demonstrated when we unfurled the sails at the push of a button. The 62 needs a generous sail area to push her substantial displacement through the water and Beneteau has obliged with 182m 2 of sail area. This is further augmented by an immense Code 0, pushing up her already substantial sail area.

It was fortunate that we were carrying this Code 0 as it proved the saving grace in the light conditions. This massive sail was able to drive the heavy yacht on at a good pace and, despite the very modest conditions, we were able to eke over 6kt out of her.

giant 62 yacht

She was also surprisingly agile given the conditions and had a good feel. Often with these very large yachts it’s easy to end up feeling somewhat divorced from the action, rather like you’re at the helm of a cross-Channel ferry. Yet, with the 62, there was sufficient feel to counter this.

I would never suggest that the Beneteau is a spectacular sailing yacht, but what the French manufacturers have come to perfect over the years is the balance between cruising comfort and workmanlike sailing performance. It would also be interesting to have her out sailing in some heavier conditions, as that long waterline length and powerful sail plan suggest she could be good fun.

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 62

Sam’s Verdict

Beneteau knows what it’s about and the new 62 is a fine vessel which is an absolute dream for anyone planning a lazy cruise through the Med in total comfort. She is easily handled by a couple, while the crew accommodation opens up another option. She would also do well in the luxury charter market. The yacht does not try to compete with the bespoke luxury bluewater yachts in the Discovery/Oyster bracket and the fit out is unquestionably not quite in the same league. Yet that is repaid in the price tag, which is astonishingly low, considering what you get.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 review: French boating giant breaks new ground

  • Photos: Nicholas Claris
  • The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 is the current flagship of the range

The ability to cruise long distances in comfort is a far more relaxing proposition than hammering around at 25 knots

  • The L-shaped seating in the cockpit is optional

The unit opposite the lounge can be replaced with a small sofa to create more seating space

  • The amidships galley can be closed off from the saloon with a sliding door and there is access directly into it via a side door from the port side deck

Triple MFDs clearly display boat and navigation information

Side doors on both decks create excellent pathways through the boat and boost natural ventilation inside

The hard top is a desirable addition but its weight is felt out at sea

For a long distance cruiser the ergonomics at the upper helm are very good

  • The amidships owner's suite is spacious, bright and packed with intelligent storage solutions throughout
  • The VIP cabin’s offset bed makes the most of the available space
  • The twin guest cabin’s ensuite bathroom is also the day heads
  • The crew space is roomy and well designed

The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 is the new flagship of Beneteau’s trawler range, but is this voluminous fast-displacement cruiser the brand’s first true passagemaker?

The scheduling at the Cannes Boat Show was so insanely tight that I was an untied deck shoe away from missing my appointment to sea trial the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 at the show.

In fact, if a harbour master hadn’t taken pity on me and chased the big Beneteau down with me perched on the bow of his little RIB the test may never have happened.

Approaching the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 from the stern at water level is quite a way to be introduced to it, as it is a huge boat.

It is the largest boat that Beneteau (the brand, not the group) has ever built and it certainly has a presence. It’s more than 60ft long and nearly 18ft wide, towering above me from my vantage point on the waterline.

Having clambered onto the bathing platform to join the Beneteau crew and 10 or so other journalists on board for the trial, it’s striking how different this flagship feels to the Swift Trawler range.

The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 shares many of the same design principles as the smaller trawler yachts that Beneteau produces but it has an eye on finesse a cut above its more utilitarian siblings. It is, after all, built at Beneteau Group’s Italian Monfalcone plant where the Monte Carlo Yachts range is made.

Article continues below…

How superyachts are built: Behind the scenes at Monte Carlo Yachts

Nordhavn 63 yacht tour: you can cross the atlantic in this go-anywhere boat.

The glass transom makes the cockpit feel very open and connects the aft end of the deck to the large hydraulic bathing platform, which has a lift capacity of 400kg.

There is a crane option for the flybridge (with the same lift capacity) so the tender can be kept there if preferred, but with hi-lo functionality and pop-up chocks built into the deck, the platform would be the most convenient place to stow the tender.

Detailing is impressive here, like the steps that are built into the platform which deploy as it’s lowered into the water, and the full width, teak-laid lip at the bottom of the transom which both acts as an aft-facing perch but also allows you to cross the transom without getting wet feet when the platform is down.

The majority of these boats will be owner-run and the crew space has been arranged with that in mind. It works very well if there are crew on board but the configuration makes it a genuinely useful space without crew.

It’s packed with storage and is home to the washing machine. The toilet and shower compartments are split, with the toilet as close to the entrance as possible, so those who have just emerged from the water can use facilities without getting the main interior wet.

Similarly, if guests want more than just a quick wash off from the deck shower there is a shower compartment that they can use without the need to head to the lower deck.

Practical details

There is also access to the impressive machinery space from here, as well as through a hatch that leads down from the cockpit for quick checks. The big trawler yacht certainly hasn’t forgotten its roots and is as practical as they come.

Storage, both on deck and throughout the cabins, is superb and there are lots of clever ideas that make the day-to-day running of the boat a bit easier.

All of the filler caps for the fuel, water and waste tanks are housed behind separate hatches at knee level on the starboard side deck to protect the teak from spillages, and there is an external access hatch for the galley bin so you can drag bin bags straight on to deck and not through the saloon.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-foredeck-credit-nicholas-claris

The foredeck sun pads are flanked by two deep lockers, the ideal dimensions for swallowing lines and a couple of fenders.

Possibly the most useful addition of all is the internal staircase that links the saloon to the flybridge, a feature that so enhances the workings of the boat but one that very few designers incorporate any more.

The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 has the feel of something that has been designed to be at sea for weeks on end and it’s telling that a lot of these practical design features were informed by feedback from existing Swift Trawler owners.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-saloon-credit-nicholas-claris

These owners may live on board for an entire season, so things like having easy access to the storage under the berths and a well-shaped, seagoing galley with domestic refrigeration are key considerations.

The layout of the saloon suits that passagemaking ethos, with the galley just forward of amidships and close enough to the lower helm that those on watch can safely pop into it to grab a drink or make a quick snack.

It’s directly opposite the internal dinette, which features a table on a sliding mechanism so you can push it against the sofa, which both creates more space in the companionway and reveals a useful handhold for steadying yourself at sea.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-lounge-credit-nicholas-claris

The dinette sofa only runs down one side of the table but the boat comes with four super slender director’s chairs, which can be arranged around the table to boost dining space and all stow away beneath the dinette bench when not in use.

Access in and out of the saloon is excellent thanks to side doors on both sides of the boat, the sliding doors aft and the aforementioned internal stairs to the top deck. We had a lot of people on board but I never struggled to find a clear path in and out of the saloon.

As standard, the lower deck is fitted with three cabins all with their own ensuite bathrooms – a great layout for those who will cruise alone the majority of the time but want the space to host guests in comfort.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-owners-cabin-credit-nicholas-claris

The amidships owner’s suite is spacious, bright and packed with intelligent storage solutions throughout

Having three separate bathrooms means guests have plenty of privacy and if the twin cabin feels formulaic in its arrangement the same can’t be said for the VIP with its angled, walkaround double bed.

The owner’s suite is amidships and is just brimming with storage and, like the rest of the interior, boasts at least 6ft 6in of headroom.

Standing tall

The boat’s height, so beneficial in providing ample internal volume, is felt at sea. Granted, we had a lot of people on board, most of whom were huddled on the flybridge scribbling down notes, but the combination of the round-bilge hull shape and a few hundred kilograms of hardtop give the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 a propensity to wallow in the lower reaches of the rev range.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-side-view-running-shot

For this reason, the Quick gyroscopic stabiliser is pretty much a necessity – even at €94,000 – but given this hull is optimised to run at 8-10 knots the benefit will be felt when cruising and not just when the boat is at anchor.

This MICAD displacement hull with a round bilge and vertical stem is quite a departure from the Beneteau trawler norm. The other trawler yachts with their classic semi-displacement hulls feel happiest cruising in the mid to low teens whereas the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 was designed with sub 10-knot cruising in mind.

The pace may be slow but the benefit is impressive cruising range, thanks to a total fuel capacity just shy of 4,000 litres. The goal that Beneteau worked towards was 1,000nm at 9 knots and the data we captured on test suggests this is right on the money.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-helm-credit-nicholas-claris

At 8.5 knots with all those bodies on board, 40% fuel and 15% water the twin MAN 730s were sipping a combined 24 litres per hour for a range of 1,084nm with 20% in reserve.

At this speed the hull slips through the water with grace, gently shoving the waves aside and plodding on resolutely.

Sound levels are well contained and with deck spaces that have so much to offer it means those on board can make the most of them without being bombarded by throttle-induced breeze.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-bow-running-shot-credit-nicholas-claris

It won’t always be convenient to travel at such a measured pace, though, and the oomph of those 730hp MANs will be welcome when trying to outrun bad weather.

Flat out the boat will hit 20 knots, but be prepared for fuel consumption to rocket at the same pace as range plummets.

At full revs the engines will devour all 3,870 litres of diesel after just 285 miles. Stick to that single-figure sweetspot, keep the stabiliser spooled up and life aboard the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 is rewarding in its serenity.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-side-view

In hard turns you can feel the boat’s weight even with the gyro doing its thing, but the boat does turn back on itself neatly without the lethargic attitude that you often find with displacement craft.

To give Beneteau credit, both helm stations have been arranged with ergonomics of hand-steering in mind. The relationship between wheel, seat and throttles is good and with triple Raymarine MFDs on both dashboards it’s easy to customise the information that is being relayed to the skipper.

The joystick, which combines both shafts and the thruster, is a €37,000 option and one that can probably be left unticked given the excellent control provided by the throttles and potent proportional Sleipner thrusters.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-upper-helm-credit-nicholas-claris

Lofty credentials

Despite the number of boats that had escaped the confines of the show for sea trials at the same time as us and the amount of wash thrashing about there was very little to test the mettle of the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62’s hull.

That said, anything that did come our way was dismissed with little fuss and perched atop the flybridge with a view over that purposeful foredeck and nearly 30 tonnes of boat beneath you, it feels like it would take quite a sea to knock this thing off course.

There will be trawler purists out there wringing their hands at the notion that this boat could be mentioned in the same company as “true” displacement trawlers, but that really isn’t the way to look at this boat.

beneteau-grand-trawler-62-test-drive-review-side-running-shot

It’s not trying to compete with Fleming or Nordhavn but has in its sights a customer who has come to the realisation that speed and top-end performance are of no real interest on a boat of this size.

That living space, practicality and the ability to cruise long distances in comfort without having to worry about the next fuel stop can be a far more relaxing proposition than hammering around at 25 knots.

Then there’s the price. The Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 doesn’t feel like a Fleming or a Grand Banks because it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than those boats.

Two million euros (without VAT) is a serious chunk of change, but for a well specified boat of this size that has such impressive long-range cruising ability it feels like relatively good value for money.

This smash-and-grab sea trial provided good insight into where Beneteau wants to go with the trawler range but I couldn’t help thinking that a short trip around the bay couldn’t unearth the best from the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62. We have plans to conduct a more in-depth test early next year when hopefully, in less pressured circumstances, we will be able to experience its promising cruising credentials first hand. A 2022 European Powerboat of the Year winner, the Grand Trawler 62 is designed for long cruises in comfort, with Beneteau’s new flagship offering a remarkable range of over 1,000nm, highly practical indoor and outdoor areas plus a plethora of storage space. And the best bit? Asia is welcoming hull four.

When Asia’s first Grand Trawler 62 arrives in Hong Kong through regional dealer Simpson Marine, it will mark the regional debut of Beneteau’s largest powerboat to date and the pioneer of a new range of passage makers that build on the spectacular success of the brand’s Swift Trawler line.

Selling points include a whopping range of 1,045nm and 235 cubic metres of volume that includes masses of storage space. The 62-footer with an almost 18ft beam represents a large leap in size among Beneteau’s trawler-style models and even includes a multifunctional crew area, yet it’s still geared towards hands-on owners. It’s solid, seaworthy, durable, practical and functional. Let’s just say it’s the kind of boat that also has grabrails on the inside.

While there’s nothing sleek and sexy about any of those qualities, at more than twice the price of the new Swift Trawler 48, the Grand Trawler 62 is pitched at a sector of owners used to affording the good things in life. As such, the interior reflects a notable upgrade in finish and detailing, although nothing that’s going to break easily.

“Beneteau’s aim is for the Grand Trawler 62 to be the best-value proposition in the market,” says Robert Chaffer, Product Manager for Beneteau’s two Trawler lines and Gran Turismo range. “It hasn’t sacrificed common sense for bling. It has a calming quality, a quiet layer of luxury on top of the practicality.”

TRAWLER TRIBE

The Grand Trawler 62 is the product of almost two decades of development since Beneteau launched the Swift Trawler line in 2003. With 1,300 units produced so far, the series dominates a sector of economic, long-range flybridge motor yachts designed for extensive cruising, where the focus is as much on the journey as the destination.

Although the 48 is now the biggest Swift Trawler, former models included the 52, which spanned almost 56ft overall and was succeeded by the 50, a model only recently discontinued.

The aft ‘terrace to the sea’ provides seating overlooking the hydraulic platform

Recognising the growing appeal of high-volume yachts in the 50-100ft sector, Groupe Beneteau had announced the development of Grand Trawler at Boot Dusseldorf 2020 under the codename Project E, before the 62’s launch last year gave trawler-style boat lovers a new flagship to aspire to.

“From 30-50ft, Swift Trawler has been incredibly successful. It outsells all the rivals by four to one, so we’ve built up a huge following of owners who gather in rendezvous events and owner’s clubs,” says Chaffer, who has worked in the industry for over three decades including as a yacht designer.

The cockpit has a sea-facing sofa and foldable table

“We could see the trawler market becoming more popular and more owners wanting to cruise longer distances, with an increase in space and facilities. Potential Grand Trawler clients obviously include Swift Trawler owners wanting to move up in size, although the owner of hull one previously owned a Lagoon.”

Typically, Swift Trawler owners are experienced, hands-on boaters, many spending several months a year at sea or even living on their boat.

“Swift Trawler owners have a minimum of 15-20 years’ of boating experience. They’ve come from sailing, powerboats, catamarans, and they’ve probably had five to six boats, so by the time they come to Swift Trawler, they know what they want in a boat and how they want to use it,” Chaffer says.

The forward flybridge includes a staircase to the interior and sunpad ahead of the helm

“The Grand Trawler 62 is built on feedback from these owners, and we’ve poured all of that experience into this boat. Everything we’ve learnt from Swift Trawler since the first model was launched in 2003 is in the foundations of the Grand Trawler 62.”

RANGE AND STORAGE

The two priorities in the design of the Grand Trawler 62 were range and storage, essential to owners wanting to spend long periods onboard and cruise extensively.

Beneteau, Grand Trawler, 62, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer, Gran Turismo, Asia, Hong Kong, Simpson Marine

The helm station is by the starboard side door

Having analysed the use of Swift Trawler boats, Beneteau concluded that 75-80 per cent cruised between 8-12 knots, so worked with Italy’s MICAD on naval architecture to produce a displacement hull that has outperformed initial predictions at nine knots, achieving 1,045nm with 10 per cent of fuel still in the tank.

That’s more than enough to cruise from Hong Kong down past the Philippines to Kota Kinabalu, or from Singapore to Bali, although should there be a need for speed, the yacht can reach 20 knots with its twin 730hp MAN engines.

“It’s a great passage maker,” Chaffer says. “This is a big increase in range even for Swift Trawler owners. They like long cruising and now they can consider bigger journeys, which was the feedback we had.”

The bed in the master suite exemplifies the emphasis on storage

Research also highlighted that the most common request from Swift Trawler owners was storage, storage and more storage. A tour of the Grand Trawler 62 reveals that for every flat surface, there’s often storage space underneath, above or behind.

ENJOYING THE ELEMENTS

Italian studio Nauta Design – brought in to upgrade Lagoon’s interiors over a decade ago – handled the exterior and interior of the Grand Trawler 62, which starts aft with a ‘terrace to the sea’ that recalls the ‘terrace on the sea’ introduced on the Lagoon 55 sailing cat launched last year.

The cockpit seating faces through and over a transparent pushpit

With the emphasis on views of the water and scenery instead of the saloon doors, the cockpit has an aft-facing sofa and foldable table facing a transparent pushpit and sliding side gates. Full-width steps provide a comfortable waterside seating area and lead down to a hydraulic platform that can carry a tender, although there’s also the option to store a RIB or toys on the aft flybridge.

To port, a gull-wing hatch allows access to a multi-functional area that can include a washing machine as well as toilet and shower rooms. All can potentially be used by owners and guests, as each is separate from the cross-bunk cabin to starboard, which could be used for crew or how the owner wishes.

The foredeck features a double sunpad and sofa, each with adjustable backrests

Symmetrical side decks that start with teak-slat ‘fashion plates’ lead to the foredeck, which has a connected double sunpad and sofa, both with adjustable backrests, drinks holders and plenty of space either side for books, snacks or even towels if more people want to lie down. The area can also be sheltered by a bimini.

However, the prime outdoor area is the stunning 365sqft flybridge, one of the largest in its class and accessible from either the starboard side of the cockpit or internally from behind the helm.

On the flybridge, a C-shaped sofa faces an inward-facing wet bar

To port is a folding table and a C-shaped sofa that adjoins a forward-facing L-shaped sofa, while starboard is an inward-facing wet bar with Kenyon grill, twin-seat helm and a forward sunpad. The aft area is clear by default and has the option of a crane.

FLEXIBLE INTERIOR

The interior by Nauta Design features bulkheads and cabinetwork in walnut or waxed light oak as standard, providing a light, relaxing atmosphere.

The saloon has a grabrail overhead and a C-shaped sofa to port that can face either a two-seat sofa or a sideboard with drawers and shelves to starboard, where options include a retractable 50-inch TV, drawer fridge and wine cooler.

On starboard side, the first step up to the dining area is flanked by drawers to starboard and to port by a handrail above a purpose-built servery unit housing Villeroy & Boch glasses, crockery and cutlery.

A further step up is the dinette, which has an L-shaped sofa and a tabletop that can even slide over the sofa when not in use or to create more hallway space while cruising, for example. For meals, up to four folding dining chairs can be used to round out the seating and can also be used outside, such as in the aft cockpit.

Beside the dinette is an enclosed galley with windows facing the dinette and saloon. The galley can be closed off with an optional sliding door, while to port it benefits from a side-deck door that provides air flow and ventilation.

The galley benefits from a portside door

The galley’s aft side facing the saloon is stacked with shelves, storage, work surfaces and, to port, a sink plus a trash receptacle that can be retrieved from the side deck, a nice safety buffer in the case of spillages. Forward is a full-height, 255-litre fridge-freezer, while beside the side door is a four-burner induction hob above a 40-litre multi-function microwave oven and wine rack.

The raised helm station, past the stairs to the flybridge, is another key hub and occupies most of the forward area, where it’s protected by a reverse-angle, one-piece central windscreen. Two comfortable leather seats face a large wheel and a wide leather console that features up to three 16-inch Raymarine screens and can even be completely raised up on hinges to allow access to the circuitry.

The helm station is accompanied by a daybed

Integrated software includes Groupe Beneteau’s own Seanapps and Ship Control programmes. Port side of the helm is Chaffer’s favourite space on board, a sofa-cum-daybed that offers a relaxing nook to nestle in whether the boat’s cruising or not. To starboard is a side door and a curved staircase down to the lower deck, which is available with three or four guest cabins.

CABINS AND CUPBOARDS

As seen on the hull for Hong Kong, the three-cabin layout features a 150sqft full-beam master suite midships with a forward-facing double flanked by bedside cabinets.

The master suite with the luxury package

A stylish desk-cum-vanity-table is to port, while the starboard side features storage space and the option of a 50-inch TV on the bulkhead. Forward is an elegant en-suite bathroom with Corian worksurface, Villeroy & Boch washbasin, electric toilet and walk-in shower cubicle with rain shower.

In the four-cabin layout, the bedroom area would be used for two identical cabins that would share the bathroom. The guest cabin with en-suite is to port, while the VIP is in the bow and features an angled 2m-long bed facing the en-suite bathroom on the starboard side, which has similar finishes and features to the master en-suite.

Beneteau, Grand Trawler, 62, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer, Gran Turismo, Asia, Hong Kong, Simpson Marine

The VIP suite in the bow has an angled bed

Like the rest of the boat, the bedrooms and bathrooms have plenty of storage, with the master suite featuring half-height hanging cupboards in all four corners. In addition, the top of the double beds in both the master and VIP can be lifted to reveal masses of storage space underneath, ideal for suitcases, towels, bedding and other non-daily essentials.

The hull we toured had the model’s luxury package, which includes an upgrade in lighting, leather tops and louvered panelling on doors. They’re all nice touches and reflective of the efforts Beneteau is making to provide the premium materials and detailing that owners often appreciate when buying yachts of this size.

Beneteau, Grand Trawler, 62, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer, Gran Turismo, Asia, Hong Kong, Simpson Marine

The aft cross-bunk cabin can be used for crew or guests

However, the Grand Trawler 62 is not about luxury. Beneteau’s biggest powerboat to date is about taking the Swift Trawler range’s emphasis on multi-functionality, practicality, space, storage and fuel efficiency to a new level. It achieves all that and makes you excited to see what’s coming next. www.beneteau.com www.simpsonmarine.com

giant 62 yacht

Displacement cruising yacht Grand Trawler 62 is designed for those who want to switch to an easy-to-handle boat and comfortably live at sea for months with occasional restocking. Beneteau shipbuilders together with MICAD engineers and Nauta Design made such desires come true.

Building on the ideas behind the Swift Trawler cruiser line from the same shipyard, Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 remains a stand-alone model with an impressive and capable displacement hull and on-board comfort rarely seen on boats of this size. We can safely say that reliability, safety, freedom of movement and comfort of living on board allow us to say that Grand Trawler 62 belongs to the class of trawler-type expedition superyachts with a long range.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

topRik team made sure from their own experience that the speed characteristics of the yacht declared by the developers are rather underpromised, especially if fuel consumption is taken out of brackets.

But usually, sailors try to use fuel efficiently, and not only because of financial savings. Accidents at sea are common, and it's always safer if you have a supply of water, food, and of course fuel.

In a practical study, which took place as part of the next boat show in France, topRik experts concluded that the least amount of fuel (31 liters) is spent if you go at 1000 rpm. Then, at a speed within 7 knots per hour, the range on a conventional Grand Trawler 62 fuel supply (2 fuel tanks x 1935 l) will be more than 1000 km. At the same time, the noise level from the engine is minimal.

But it is always a pleasure for any yachtsman to know that you can get out of the weather much faster. Our experience has shown that it is possible to exceed 20 knots per hour at speeds above 2400. It should only be remembered that fuel consumption will increase significantly - more than 11 times, and the range will decrease by 4 times. Keep this in mind if you do not want to get stuck in a storm far from the coast.

Review of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 by topRik Team

We must admit right away that the topRik team is not indifferent to the yachts that leave the Beneteau shipyards. A good third of our SimpleSail fleet, which is located in the marinas of Montenegro and Croatia, consists of Beneteau boats. Therefore, when a company needed a reliable and comfortable motor yacht for representative purposes, we first of all turned our attention to the trawlers of this shipyard.

Because we are accustomed to scrutinizing the boats we buy, we have gradually familiarized ourselves with all the models of the shipyard - Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 caught our attention as it was the flagship of the new Grand range and its sheer size made it stand out among displacement boats.

Who wouldn’t be conquered by these chopped lines, an almost vertical stem, a far protruding platform and a high flybridge roof! From the cockpit you’ll have to look up almost vertically to take a glance at the flybridge of Grand Trawler 62.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Very high sides are the promise of high ceilings in the cabins. However, the height of the headroom in the saloon and on the flybridge can be determined even from the shore. Our tallest expert (almost 2 meters high) immediately noticed this on the approach to the yacht.

At the same time, the yacht does not give the impression of a grandmother's Victorian house - all the parameters of the boat are harmoniously balanced. We, dealing with charters and observing the behavior of passengers, immediately realized that while being on the flybridge even the most restless ladies don’t have to grab the rails during rolling. That’s because, judging from our tests of the Grand Trawler 62 at sea, even with a high wave it moves like a tanker – stable and reliable.

Numerous portholes on the sides mean a lot of light in the lower deck rooms, where the cabins are located, and where we will definitely climb down later.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Like most trawler superyachts, the transom of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 is an open type. That is, there is no transom wall. This stylish glass partition between the two ladders on the sides can’t really be called a full-size wall.

Moreover, these ladders have lower steps across the entire width of the stern. This makes it possible to be stay near the water even without a platform, if you decide not to purchase this option. Then your beach spot will be somewhat narrower, and you will not be able to go down into the sea with the platform.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The platform can be used to transport a dinghy, jet ski or other water toys – it is quite spacious (9 m²) and powerful enough to avoid constantly using a lifting mechanism to deliver all this equipment from the upper deck during anchorage.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

And now let's go up to the main deck, which has this layout:

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

On the deck, there is a cockpit and a saloon, conventionally and with the help of furniture arrangement, divided into several zones, with the bow area serving as a large sunbathing area.

In the Cockpit

The cockpit on a motor vessel performs other functions in contrast to this area of the main deck of a sailboat, because the control posts for sailing equipment and the yacht itself are not placed here together with the helms, winches, baskets for halyards, etc.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62’s cockpit is about a fifth of the upper deck across its entire width. Here you can take out the dining table and even install a grill. But the latter is not really necessary, because the galley is located right behind the transparent partition that separates the cockpit from the saloon.

From the cockpit you can go up the ladder to the flybridge, and convenient exits to the side decks lead to the bow of the boat.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

We will certainly examine these areas a little later, but for now the path leads to the saloon. The see-through sliding partition mentioned above separates the cockpit from the saloon, but if fully extended, it creates a large area with enough space even for a crowded party if the owner decides to invite guests from neighboring yachts while moored in the marina.

In the Saloon

This is a clearly zoned space, divided by partitions and different levels into working areas: a control post and a galley, as well as social areas - a dining room and a living room.

The interiors are minimalistic, but functional and elegant. In the standard version, walnut or light oak wood, natural leather and textiles are used for decoration, furniture and partitions.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The saloon is filled with natural light thanks to glazing on three sides of the perimeter. Opening windows provide natural ventilation. Pay attention to the rounded corners of the furniture - this is always a concern for the safety of passengers.

Modern control post, located on a raised platform, includes a full-fledged chart table, a helm and a steering panel. The panel has all the necessary navigation equipment, including marine displays, communications and sensors for controlling engines and other ship systems.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

There is also a powerful throttle/reverse switch handle.

Comfortable chairs are adjusted to the needs of the helmsman in terms of height. And just look at that sofa there is on the port side - the captain can always lie down there or it could be a good place for some company.

Another feature of Grand Trawler 62’s saloon is an internal ladder that provides access to the flybridge in addition to the cockpit ladder.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The galley also has a door for access to the deck, and the galley itself is also separated from the saloon by a door so the cooking smells don’t spread to living areas.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

By the way, near the control post there is also access directly to the side deck. This allows us to go directly to the foredeck without leaving the cockpit.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

On the Foredeck

On the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 the bow doesn’t have a lower level, like some others. There is a large sunbathing area with several sun loungers, two spacious lockers for deck equipment and fenders, an anchor winch stowed in the locker, and a shortened capstan on the coaming for dock cables.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The sun loungers can be transformed: you can raise the back part or assemble a sofa out of the pillows – there are also holes for bottles and glasses on the sides.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

At the Flybridge

Remember we mentioned a possible party on board the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62? So, the flybridge is an opportunity to expand its scope. The view that opens up to you on the flybridge depends on which ladder you used to climb here - from the cockpit or from the helm station in the saloon.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

But no matter which ladder you climbed, it will still be the same 31 m² of space, which includes several areas: recreation, work, dining, cooking and tender storage, although this area can be used for other purposes - sports or dancing, for example.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Recreation area is located in two places - in front of the control post and to the left of it. This is a large sunbed and a comfortable L-shaped sofa, respectively.

The dining area includes a large fold-out table with sofas around the table on three sides. On the fourth side, if necessary, you can put folding chairs. There is a well-equipped galley with stove, grill, refrigerator, freezer and sink.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The flybridge roof is located about 6 meters from the waterline, so it is quite spacious and vertical. The diagram clearly shows the distribution of zones and the place for the tender, equipped with a crane for lowering the dinghy to the platform.

The Cabins and the Engine Compartment

On the lower deck there are cabins for passengers and crew, as well as an engine room. The layout of this deck with three cabins looks like this – you get the owner's cabin amidships, the bow cabin and the starboard cabin. All cabins are made for two with private bathrooms.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The owner’s suite contains a king-size double bed-island and bedside tables, has a dressing room, a large number of bedside tables and a table with a reclining table top.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

This table can be used as a writing or dressing table, and the dressing room, in addition to compartments for clothes, has drawers for linen, shoes and accessories.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Same bed from master cabin comes with several bedside tables in the bow cabin. These beds open up a large locker when the bed is raised. So there is enough storage space for all the necessary baggage.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The second cabin can be equipped with two single beds. This cabin has a porthole that provides natural light, as well as storage space for personal items.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

All cabins have bathrooms of different sizes, but all have a shower, washbasin, toilet, mirror and lockers.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The 4-cabin version has two cabins amidships, which can be fitted with beds according to the needs of the owner, as well as bulkheads.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Please note that part of the space below the cockpit can be equipped as an additional crew cabin, bathroom, or storage space.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The engine room occupies the entire width of the lower deck, the equipment installed there ensures the balance of the vessel. There are engines, a gyroscopic stabilizer, a watermaker, air conditioning and other equipment necessary to maintain the life on board.

We know what kind of acrobatic feats are sometimes required to get to the right unit on some boats, and here we were pleasantly surprised. Even our giant did not need to fold in two to move inside the engine room.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Advantages of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Let's start, as usual, with the shortcomings instead. At the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 there is only one - this is the price of a superyacht. You can, of course, reduce the cost by eliminating the gyro stabilizer or hydraulic platform, as well as some other items on the optional list, but don't get too carried away.

We attributed real, practical comfort to the advantages. We are not talking about excessive luxury, but about the convenience of life on board that can last for months at the sea. Everything you need for this is provided here:

  • the ability to stock up on fuel, food and water for a long period;
  • comfortable, well-equipped control posts – even using them for hours is not tiring;
  • engine room, where you can move freely and equip all free places according to your needs;
  • galley in saloon, mini-galley on flybridge;
  • comfortable spacious cabins;
  • recreation and sunbathing areas;
  • the possibility of privacy.

By virtue of its design, the ship is safe even during significant sea waves and a lot of light and fresh air in the cabins provides a great mood and conditions for good rest.

Reviews of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 from Professionals

We present reviews of the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 from professional journalists and yachtsmen who got to know this yacht at different times and under different circumstances. We tried to choose the nuances that for some reason were not covered in our review. Full materials can be read by clicking on the links to the pages of the leading yachting media, where they were published.

Jack Haines

The author of the popular magazine almost missed the Grand Trawler 62 sea trials as he was carried away by the wealth of choice at the Cannes Boat Show (oh, how we understand it). But, having caught up with the yacht and looking at it from the cockpit of the small RIB, he was able to fully appreciate the dimensions of this huge yacht.

From that point on, and later when he came on board, Jack was always amazed at how different this flagship of the new line was from the top brand Swift line of the same parent brand. Unlike the very practical Swift boats, the Grand trawler aims for elegance. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it was not built in France, but in Italy at the plant in Monfalcone, where Monte Carlo Yachts vessels are manufactured.

Starting to describe the main deck, he said that the platform has a capacity of 400 kg, as well as a crane, which is provided on the flybridge.

Jack believes that the yacht is designed solely for the owners who will manage the yacht and serve those on board, and therefore the layout is made with this in mind – not much space for the crew is available.

He remarked that access from the galley to the deck was a great idea, since the garbage will not be carried through the saloon when it needs to be moved to shore.

The author of the review suggested that the developers carefully listened to the wishes and comments of the owners of the Swift Trawler in order to ensure the convenience when cruising on the Grand Trawler 62. Undoubtedly, the ladder from the saloon to the flybridge is one of appropriate amenities, which was adopted by many naval architects.

Jack noted that in the saloon dining area, the sofa is only present on one side of the table, but he immediately added that optional folding chairs could be installed on the other side.

During testing at the sea, the reviewer drew attention to the fact that the effect of a high-mounted heavy hardtop in combination with a round bottom is noticeable here: at low speeds, the yacht begins to choke. Jack suggested that this process could also be caused by the fact that up to two dozen journalists were crammed onto the flybridge. The optional Quick gyro stabilizer will prevent this phenomenon, and at 8-10 knots it does not occur even without this expensive equipment.

John Higginson

The author of this review covered the arrival of the fourth Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 hull in Asia, predicting the same triumph for this line as the Swift Trawler.

He noted that, despite the ability to organize sleeping accommodation for the crew, this yacht is still geared towards practical owners. But good things can’t be cheap, so the cost of a Grand Trawler 62 is twice the price of the latest Swift Trawler 48.

John quotes a Beneteau spokesman for the region as saying that common sense is not sacrificed for luxury - luxury simply camouflages practicality.

Manufacturers and developers have drawn on all the experience gained since the day when the first trawler yacht was launched in 2003. With 1,300 hulls sold in that time, the Swift Trawler continues to dominate the market for fuel-efficient long-range flybridge motor yachts.

Beneteau listens closely to the needs of its clients to recognize their interest in yachts ranging from 50 to 100 feet. With the new yacht, the company hopes to repeat the success of a range of displacement yachts from 30 to 50 feet that had left all competitors far behind.

Les Sables d’Olonne is abuzz as early in the morning I approach the dock where the new 62-footer is moored: the first arrivals of the New York-Les Sables, the transatlantic regatta featuring the Imoca 60s that will take part in the mythical Vendée Globe in the fall, are expected in the afternoon.

oceanis yachts 62

The descent to the saloon is particularly safe, thanks to a ladder with a low slope and the presence of numerous handrails (at last, given their lack in so many boats seen and tested in recent seasons). The effect of space is heightened by the presence of numerous light spots, which enhance the contrast between the dark wood (but you can also opt for a much lighter wood) and the white of the bulkheads and furniture. The linear galley runs along the starboard broadside and at first glance appears bare because everything from the sinks to the stove is hidden by a countertop. Instead we even find a double refrigerator, accompanied in this example No. 1 by a real wine cellar. To the left here is the dinette served by a side sofa and a center sofa, in the back of which is the housing for the retractable TV. The chart area, with an almost “space-like” design and facing forward, is particular.

“ We decided to opt for this configuration ,” Pierangelo Andreani tells me, “ because this way those who sit here are not excluded from the rest of the crew sitting in the dinette. And if, on the other hand, it needs to communicate with the cockpit, the swivel chair makes the operation immediate “.

Leaving the port of Les Sables dOlonne.

The layout of the sleeping area includes three cabins and three bathrooms , with a special feature regarding the forward master cabin: access is through a side door, thus preventing a view of the interior to those in the saloon and thus providing considerable privacy. Space is definitely well utilized, with a comfortable bed, a dresser (but you can also opt for a small desk), correct storage spaces, and a bathroom with a separate shower. The two guest cabins also have separate showers , but while I really like the bathroom in the starboard one, I am less convinced by the one on the port side. Since it is also used as a guest bathroom and thus has dual entrances (from the cabin and the saloon), the shower/wc arrangement is reversed from its starboard counterpart and the spaces are more cramped (always thinking that I am on a 62-footer). Finally, the exploitation of the space created laterally to the aft garage is curious. Beneteau has made two portholes on the transom that provide the cabins with additional ventilation.

IMG_1610

We head out to sea with about ten knots of wind before the tide is too low. As they leave the harbor, fans are already beginning to gather ready to celebrate the first arrivals of the transatlantic race. Let’s open, shall we say, the mainsail; while the standard version provides fullbatten mainsail, a furler is mounted in the mast on this first example. We immediately give Code Zero and thus start sailing in total surplace , with about twelve knots of wind we reach almost nine knots of speed at an angle of 110 degrees. While at the helm is Hervé Gastinel , president of the Beneteau Group, take the opportunity to test the system the French shipyard has created to prevent slipping when sitting in the cockpit when the boat is skidded. Basically, a “triangle” is inserted under a section of the cushioning, thus creating a “step” that actually does the job.

I take the helm as the wind strengthens slightly: with thirteen knots of air and a ninety-degree angle we reach 9.8 knots of speed. At the helm, the boat does its job, responding to commands without haste (after all, we are talking about a nineteen-meter behemoth and about thirty tons of displacement) but with precision; to make it accelerate, it is enough to heave slightly: once it gets into its rhythm, it keeps it without problems even having to pass the annoying waves created by the photographers’ boat that is doing the shooting. At lunchtime the wind drops, and unable to return to port due to low tide, we take the opportunity to have a snack and test the tender garage. The system works and we lower it into the water without any problems.

We take a closer look at Maitre Coq, winner of the New York-Les Sables

In the afternoon, we continue the test also with the spi and especially with the genoa (in my case we are talking about a classic genoa, but the shipyard has of course provided the possibility of self-tacking). The good feelings of the morning are confirmed even as we sail by surrounded by the dinghies that came out of Les Sables d’Olonne to welcome Jeremie Beyou, who has just crossed the finish line of the New York-Les Sables.

Overall, the Oceanis Yacht 62 kicks off a remarkable challenge for Beneteau, which is entering head-on a market, that of “affordable” large yachts, that is becoming increasingly attractive. In fact, the base price of the boat will be “only” 650,000 euros.

Australia's first long-range Triton maritime surveillance drone set to arrive amid concerns over boat arrivals

MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System

The first of at least four new large, unmanned surveillance aircraft ordered from the United States is due to arrive in the Northern Territory late on Saturday where it will soon play a key role in monitoring unauthorised maritime arrivals to the north.

Following months of test flights, the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton — dubbed AUS 1 — flew out of a Californian Naval Air Station on Thursday on a flight via Wake Island before heading to its new home at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Tindal.

Roughly the size of a 737 aircraft, the Triton drones will eventually be piloted remotely by the RAAF from the Edinburgh Air Base outside Adelaide to assist the Australian Border Force with maritime patrols as well as other military surveillance roles.

Last year Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy confirmed the purchase of Australia's fourth MQ-4C Triton as part of a $1.5 billion boost to RAAF capability, despite the US Navy recently halting production of the expensive unmanned platform.

On Friday radar tracking data confirmed "AUS 1" — flying under the call sign "SCORE47" — had departed from the Point Mugu Naval Air Station and was headed across the Pacific on its delivery flight to Australia.

A radar map of the Pacific showing a mark near Half Moon Bay, California

The long-range surveillance drone's scheduled arrival late on Saturday night comes as authorities grapple with a number of recent unauthorised boat arrivals that have made it into Australian waters , and even the mainland, undetected.

Critics of the Triton say the aircraft, which operates at an altitude upwards of 50,000 feet, is particularly vulnerable to enemy attack and not capable of monitoring small wooden people-smuggling vessels, a claim hotly disputed by backers of the program.

The aircraft has the ability to survey tens of thousands of square kilometres in a single 28-hour mission, while providing visual and electronic data back in real time, and will be primarily deployed to monitor Australia's northern maritime approaches.

Australia first expressed interest in acquiring the Triton more than 20 years ago, with the platform based on the RQ-4B Global Hawk flown by the US Air Force, Japan and NATO, but optimised for maritime reconnaissance missions.

Ahead of the arrival of Australia's first MQ-4C, the head of Air Force Capability, Air Vice-Marshal Wendy Blyth, said RAAF pilots and crews had already been busy training on the platform in the United States.

"These personnel received the same training as their USN counterparts and gained valuable experience to ensure that Air Force is able to deploy the MQ-4C Triton effectively," she said.

Pentagon's top AUKUS adviser quits post after two years

The Pentagon's most senior adviser and coordinator for AUKUS has quit his role overseeing the military partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and United States.

Abraham Denmark, who has been in the position since July 2022, has not disclosed what his next job will be.

He wrote on social media: "While my departure is bittersweet, I am excited for the future of AUKUS."

Abe Denmark addresses media at Fleet Base West, Rockingham, WA

Speaking at a press briefing, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said Mr Denmark had played a key role in helping Australia to eventually acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

"He was a key architect of the AUKUS Pillar One optimal pathway announced by the president and the prime ministers, and instrumental in developing advanced capability cooperation in AUKUS Pillar Two," Ms Singh said.

'With a heavy heart': Iconic waterfront Fort Myers Beach bar and restaurant for sale

giant 62 yacht

Bonita Bill’s has been a beloved Fort Myers Beach stop for locals and visitors for 30-plus years with a laid-back vibe, waterfront views, good food, and cold beer.

And now it’s for sale .

The San Carlos Island gem’s social media pages announced the news Wednesday, June 12.

“It is with a heavy heart we share the decision made by the Semmer family to sell the Bonita Bill's properties and business,” the posts read. “This decision comes from all of Bill Semmer’s children in the resolution of his estate.”

Boat art: Famous Fort Myers Beach boat, left stuck on dock after Hurricane Ian, now a work of art

Spot originally was a fish house in 1926

Bill Semmer bought the Bonita Fish Company and Fish House in 1991 (which was originally a fish house in 1926) and rebranded it as Bonita Bill’s Waterfront Cafe and Tiki Bar. The beloved community figure, who also owned Semmer Electric, died Jan. 20, 2023.

He is survived by his children Nikki Semmer, Katie Semmer-Reynolds and Billy Semmer.

“We thank everyone who continued to support us as we worked to rebuild after Ian, through the loss of our father Bill Semmer, the uphill battle of costly repairs and construction, rising operating, labor, and food costs, and a changing market,” the post continued.

With a “No shirt? No shoes? Can we get you a beer?” motto, Bonita Bill’s gained even more recognition when it reopened six months after Hurricane Ian with a Bertram yacht perched on a dock next to its open-air dining room.  Nearly two years later, it’s still there.

"We posted on social media a message of remembrance to (the one year anniversary of Ian) and we invited anyone to come sign the boat to leave their own mark on it as it’s left its mark on Bonita Bill's," Semmer-Reynolds said at the time. "People will sign their name or messages or hope or remembrance or even just something silly. It’s a way for both locals and visitors to leave their mark."

The future of that yacht and Bonita Bill’s are still up in the air.

“We will continue to remain open and operate as usual until the property is sold sometime in the future,” the post states. “Real estate Inquiries can be directed to SVN Commercial Partners at 239-851-5492.”

We know we’ll take a right on Main Street just before the Matanzas Pass bridge and visit this iconic Fort Myers Beach bar and restaurant soon. See you there.

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 19: Demi Moore and her dog Pilaf attend a photocall at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at the Carlton Cannes Hotel on May 19, 2024 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”

More than 80 passengers killed in the latest boat accident in Congo

  • Copy Link copied

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — A boat carrying more than 270 passengers has capsized on a river near Congo’s capital of Kinshasa, leaving more than 80 dead, President Félix Tshisekedi said Wednesday.

It was the latest deadly boat accident in the central African country where overloading is often blamed, including in February when dozens lost their lives after an overloaded boat sank.

A statement quoting Tshisekedi said the locally made boat capsized late Monday in Maï-Ndombe province along the Kwa River.

The boat was carrying 271 passengers to Kinshasa when it broke down due to an engine failure, according to the U.N.-backed Radio Okapi, citing Ren Maker, the water commissioner in the Mushi district where the accident happened.

Eighty-six of the passengers died while 185 managed to swim ashore, some 70 kilometers (43 miles) near the closest city of Mushie, Maker said.

He said the boat hit the edge of the river bank and broke up.

Congolese officials have often warned against overloading and vowed to punish those violating safety measures for water transportation. But in remote areas where most passengers come from, many are unable to afford public transport for the few available roads.

Associated Press writer Chinedu Asadu in Abuja, Nigeria contributed to this report.

This story has been corrected to show there are no missing people.
