Built for distance: Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

  • February 3, 2022

A 2022 European Powerboat of the Year winner, the Grand Trawler 62 is designed for long cruises in comfort, with Beneteau’s new flagship offering a remarkable range of over 1,000nm, highly practical indoor and outdoor areas plus a plethora of storage space. And the best bit? Asia is welcoming hull four.

The Grand Trawler 62 features naval architecture by Italy’s MICAD

When Asia’s first Grand Trawler 62 arrives in Hong Kong through regional dealer Simpson Marine, it will mark the regional debut of Beneteau’s largest powerboat to date and the pioneer of a new range of passage makers that build on the spectacular success of the brand’s Swift Trawler line.

Selling points include a whopping range of 1,045nm and 235 cubic metres of volume that includes masses of storage space. The 62-footer with an almost 18ft beam represents a large leap in size among Beneteau’s trawler-style models and even includes a multifunctional crew area, yet it’s still geared towards hands-on owners. It’s solid, seaworthy, durable, practical and functional. Let’s just say it’s the kind of boat that also has grabrails on the inside.

While there’s nothing sleek and sexy about any of those qualities, at more than twice the price of the new Swift Trawler 48, the Grand Trawler 62 is pitched at a sector of owners used to affording the good things in life. As such, the interior reflects a notable upgrade in finish and detailing, although nothing that’s going to break easily.

“Beneteau’s aim is for the Grand Trawler 62 to be the best-value proposition in the market,” says Robert Chaffer, Product Manager for Beneteau’s two Trawler lines and Gran Turismo range. “It hasn’t sacrificed common sense for bling. It has a calming quality, a quiet layer of luxury on top of the practicality.”

TRAWLER TRIBE

The Grand Trawler 62 is the product of almost two decades of development since Beneteau launched the Swift Trawler line in 2003. With 1,300 units produced so far, the series dominates a sector of economic, long-range flybridge motor yachts designed for extensive cruising, where the focus is as much on the journey as the destination.

Although the 48 is now the biggest Swift Trawler, former models included the 52, which spanned almost 56ft overall and was succeeded by the 50, a model only recently discontinued.

The aft ‘terrace to the sea’ provides seating overlooking the hydraulic platform

Recognising the growing appeal of high-volume yachts in the 50-100ft sector, Groupe Beneteau had announced the development of Grand Trawler at Boot Dusseldorf 2020 under the codename Project E, before the 62’s launch last year gave trawler-style boat lovers a new flagship to aspire to.

“From 30-50ft, Swift Trawler has been incredibly successful. It outsells all the rivals by four to one, so we’ve built up a huge following of owners who gather in rendezvous events and owner’s clubs,” says Chaffer, who has worked in the industry for over three decades including as a yacht designer.

The cockpit has a sea-facing sofa and foldable table

“We could see the trawler market becoming more popular and more owners wanting to cruise longer distances, with an increase in space and facilities. Potential Grand Trawler clients obviously include Swift Trawler owners wanting to move up in size, although the owner of hull one previously owned a Lagoon.”

Typically, Swift Trawler owners are experienced, hands-on boaters, many spending several months a year at sea or even living on their boat.

“Swift Trawler owners have a minimum of 15-20 years’ of boating experience. They’ve come from sailing, powerboats, catamarans, and they’ve probably had five to six boats, so by the time they come to Swift Trawler, they know what they want in a boat and how they want to use it,” Chaffer says.

The forward flybridge includes a staircase to the interior and sunpad ahead of the helm

“The Grand Trawler 62 is built on feedback from these owners, and we’ve poured all of that experience into this boat. Everything we’ve learnt from Swift Trawler since the first model was launched in 2003 is in the foundations of the Grand Trawler 62.”

RANGE AND STORAGE

The two priorities in the design of the Grand Trawler 62 were range and storage, essential to owners wanting to spend long periods onboard and cruise extensively.

Beneteau, Grand Trawler, 62, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer, Gran Turismo, Asia, Hong Kong, Simpson Marine

The helm station is by the starboard side door

Having analysed the use of Swift Trawler boats, Beneteau concluded that 75-80 per cent cruised between 8-12 knots, so worked with Italy’s MICAD on naval architecture to produce a displacement hull that has outperformed initial predictions at nine knots, achieving 1,045nm with 10 per cent of fuel still in the tank.

That’s more than enough to cruise from Hong Kong down past the Philippines to Kota Kinabalu, or from Singapore to Bali, although should there be a need for speed, the yacht can reach 20 knots with its twin 730hp MAN engines.

“It’s a great passage maker,” Chaffer says. “This is a big increase in range even for Swift Trawler owners. They like long cruising and now they can consider bigger journeys, which was the feedback we had.”

Beneteau, Grand Trawler, 62, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer, Gran Turismo, Asia, Hong Kong, Simpson Marine

The bed in the master suite exemplifies the emphasis on storage

Research also highlighted that the most common request from Swift Trawler owners was storage, storage and more storage. A tour of the Grand Trawler 62 reveals that for every flat surface, there’s often storage space underneath, above or behind.

ENJOYING THE ELEMENTS

Italian studio Nauta Design – brought in to upgrade Lagoon’s interiors over a decade ago – handled the exterior and interior of the Grand Trawler 62, which starts aft with a ‘terrace to the sea’ that recalls the ‘terrace on the sea’ introduced on the Lagoon 55 sailing cat launched last year.

The cockpit seating faces through and over a transparent pushpit

With the emphasis on views of the water and scenery instead of the saloon doors, the cockpit has an aft-facing sofa and foldable table facing a transparent pushpit and sliding side gates. Full-width steps provide a comfortable waterside seating area and lead down to a hydraulic platform that can carry a tender, although there’s also the option to store a RIB or toys on the aft flybridge.

To port, a gull-wing hatch allows access to a multi-functional area that can include a washing machine as well as toilet and shower rooms. All can potentially be used by owners and guests, as each is separate from the cross-bunk cabin to starboard, which could be used for crew or how the owner wishes.

The foredeck features a double sunpad and sofa, each with adjustable backrests

Symmetrical side decks that start with teak-slat ‘fashion plates’ lead to the foredeck, which has a connected double sunpad and sofa, both with adjustable backrests, drinks holders and plenty of space either side for books, snacks or even towels if more people want to lie down. The area can also be sheltered by a bimini.

However, the prime outdoor area is the stunning 365sqft flybridge, one of the largest in its class and accessible from either the starboard side of the cockpit or internally from behind the helm.

On the flybridge, a C-shaped sofa faces an inward-facing wet bar

To port is a folding table and a C-shaped sofa that adjoins a forward-facing L-shaped sofa, while starboard is an inward-facing wet bar with Kenyon grill, twin-seat helm and a forward sunpad. The aft area is clear by default and has the option of a crane.

FLEXIBLE INTERIOR

The interior by Nauta Design features bulkheads and cabinetwork in walnut or waxed light oak as standard, providing a light, relaxing atmosphere.

The saloon has a grabrail overhead and a C-shaped sofa to port that can face either a two-seat sofa or a sideboard with drawers and shelves to starboard, where options include a retractable 50-inch TV, drawer fridge and wine cooler.

On starboard side, the first step up to the dining area is flanked by drawers to starboard and to port by a handrail above a purpose-built servery unit housing Villeroy & Boch glasses, crockery and cutlery.

A further step up is the dinette, which has an L-shaped sofa and a tabletop that can even slide over the sofa when not in use or to create more hallway space while cruising, for example. For meals, up to four folding dining chairs can be used to round out the seating and can also be used outside, such as in the aft cockpit.

Beside the dinette is an enclosed galley with windows facing the dinette and saloon. The galley can be closed off with an optional sliding door, while to port it benefits from a side-deck door that provides air flow and ventilation.

The galley benefits from a portside door

The galley’s aft side facing the saloon is stacked with shelves, storage, work surfaces and, to port, a sink plus a trash receptacle that can be retrieved from the side deck, a nice safety buffer in the case of spillages. Forward is a full-height, 255-litre fridge-freezer, while beside the side door is a four-burner induction hob above a 40-litre multi-function microwave oven and wine rack.

The raised helm station, past the stairs to the flybridge, is another key hub and occupies most of the forward area, where it’s protected by a reverse-angle, one-piece central windscreen. Two comfortable leather seats face a large wheel and a wide leather console that features up to three 16-inch Raymarine screens and can even be completely raised up on hinges to allow access to the circuitry.

The helm station is accompanied by a daybed

Integrated software includes Groupe Beneteau’s own Seanapps and Ship Control programmes. Port side of the helm is Chaffer’s favourite space on board, a sofa-cum-daybed that offers a relaxing nook to nestle in whether the boat’s cruising or not. To starboard is a side door and a curved staircase down to the lower deck, which is available with three or four guest cabins.

CABINS AND CUPBOARDS

As seen on the hull for Hong Kong, the three-cabin layout features a 150sqft full-beam master suite midships with a forward-facing double flanked by bedside cabinets.

The master suite with the luxury package

A stylish desk-cum-vanity-table is to port, while the starboard side features storage space and the option of a 50-inch TV on the bulkhead. Forward is an elegant en-suite bathroom with Corian worksurface, Villeroy & Boch washbasin, electric toilet and walk-in shower cubicle with rain shower.

In the four-cabin layout, the bedroom area would be used for two identical cabins that would share the bathroom. The guest cabin with en-suite is to port, while the VIP is in the bow and features an angled 2m-long bed facing the en-suite bathroom on the starboard side, which has similar finishes and features to the master en-suite.

Beneteau, Grand Trawler, 62, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer, Gran Turismo, Asia, Hong Kong, Simpson Marine

The VIP suite in the bow has an angled bed

Like the rest of the boat, the bedrooms and bathrooms have plenty of storage, with the master suite featuring half-height hanging cupboards in all four corners. In addition, the top of the double beds in both the master and VIP can be lifted to reveal masses of storage space underneath, ideal for suitcases, towels, bedding and other non-daily essentials.

The hull we toured had the model’s luxury package, which includes an upgrade in lighting, leather tops and louvered panelling on doors. They’re all nice touches and reflective of the efforts Beneteau is making to provide the premium materials and detailing that owners often appreciate when buying yachts of this size.

Beneteau, Grand Trawler, 62, Cannes Yachting Festival, Robert Chaffer, Gran Turismo, Asia, Hong Kong, Simpson Marine

The aft cross-bunk cabin can be used for crew or guests

However, the Grand Trawler 62 is not about luxury. Beneteau’s biggest powerboat to date is about taking the Swift Trawler range’s emphasis on multi-functionality, practicality, space, storage and fuel efficiency to a new level. It achieves all that and makes you excited to see what’s coming next. www.beneteau.com www.simpsonmarine.com

Beneteau’s Oceanis Yacht 62 – tested and reviewed By Sailing Today

giant 62 yacht

Beneteau’s Oceanis Yacht 62 is the latest leviathan from the French giant. Sam Jefferson investigates what the big fuss is all about

It wasn’t long ago that yachts in the 60-70ft bracket were largely being built by semi custom yards which tailored these giant boats to the requirements of clients – generally at a premium price. The idea that mass producers would ever dabble in these markets seemed a remote one. After all, the ‘big four’ of yacht manufacturing (Hanse, Bavaria, Beneteau and Jeanneau) all rely on churning out huge volumes of yachts at relatively low prices in order to make a profit. It didn’t seem likely that they would make a play for this market, yet the last couple of years have seen that concept shattered.

Jeanneau made the first play with its 64 and Hanse followed suit with its huge 675. To the surprise of some, both have been able to turn a healthy margin of profit by producing unprecedented numbers of these big boats. It was only a matter of time before Beneteau decided it would muscle in on the act.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 Review (2020 Edition)

The Grand Trawler 62 powers into the liveaboard market with a big personality only outdone by an even bigger interior.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 Review (2020 Edition) image 1

Designed by owners for owners, the collaborative nature of the Grand Trawler 62 is all about liveaboard space, storage, and sense. So, is the outcome a cruising powerhouse? Or a confusing decision by the committee? One thing is for sure — this is a big moment for Beneteau.

Our Scores Explained

Design & Build

Beneteau has built up an impressive fleet of Swift Trawler models over the last 20 years, every one a great cruising boat that mixes the practicalities of on-water life with plenty of charm. And, rather cleverly, it turned to its army of Swift Trawler owners when designing a new flagship.

We are not talking full creative ownership here — there was no chance of this being like the time Homer Simpson was allowed to make his own car —  it was more an investigation into cruising priorities and feedback.

Beneteau Grand Trawler design

The Beneteau Group does have plenty of expertise in the 18m+ (60ft) market, its Monte Carlo Yachts pushed well into superyacht territory. So, it seems that Beneteau did want to hear from owners and make sure its biggest trawler to date was delivered on the water.

Unsurprisingly, one of the main priorities was space, but more interestingly, the other big want was storage, something that Beneteau definitely listened to and other builders would do well to reflect on.

Cynics might say Beneteau also wanted to ensure that the same army of owners would be keen to trade up, but, either way, it looks like a very good decision.

Beneteau Grand Trawler design

A Worthy Flagship

Staying with Monte Carlo Yachts, the Grand Trawler is built at a large yacht facility in Montfalcone, Italy, whereas the Swift Trawlers come from France. This change of location delivers a certain uplift in fit and finish to make the most use of all the space, and there is a lot.

The 62 measures 18.95m (62ft) with a 5.45m (17ft) beam that is a good 30cm (1ft) wider than most of the competition. Add in a powerful superstructure with an air draft of 7.3m (24ft) and you certainly have the platform to create some interior majesty.

Beneteau has used the volume well, with an optional three-cabin, two-stateroom layout or a more workmanlike standard four-cabin set-up. The serious cruising aspect is bolstered by a proper crew cabin aft, where a full utility area can be specified and plenty of storage space comes as standard.

The salon is the place to understand the volume and storage on offer. A vast two-tier space with a central galley and a proper helm station with guest seating. It’s the kind of helm you want when embarking on a long passage.

Beneteau Grand Trawler design

Performance Matters

The semi-displacement hull is powered by MAN i6 730hp engines, good for a top speed of 20 knots with a decent range of around 1,000nm at 9 knots. That’s a useful mix of performance for a modern trawler but you might expect more range from the 4,000-liter tanks and a comparatively light 30-ton displacement. Moreover, its rivals can reach further on less fuel and with more weight.

Interior Accommodation

Moving around the interior, the feel is of a 21m (70ft) boat. Beneteau has deliberately gone for space over complexity and it works so well. For example, you could have found a few more inches for the cabins, instead, the lower companionway is allowed to be wide, high, and wonderful to use. The cabins are still plenty big enough so it really is a win-win.

The full-beam stateroom is as big, bright, and welcoming as any boat in this class, The Monfalcone fit-out is Beneteau ++, the usual GRP, muted tones, and simple cabinetry lifted by trawler-style louvered doors (that we would love to see on the Swift Trawlers) with leather strap handles and a writing desk beneath one of the hull windows.

Beneteau Grand Trawler design

The twin cabin and forward VIP continue the theme, with hull-side glass and impressively big ensuites, the VIP's slanted glass following the bow's flair is a joy. The other thing each cabin has is masses of stowage space and it is a theme that runs across the boat, culminating in that useful crew cabin.

In truth, the Grand Trawler doesn’t feel like a crewed yacht. Maybe it’s due to the easygoing, family style, making the crew area a very useful extra cabin or simply a great dedicated storage room. If you do plan to have a crew, two people will be very happy down here.

Beneteau Grand Trawler cabin

Good Living Onboard

The salon design has the lounge aft and the galley in the center with a raised dedicated dining area that needs a few stools to make up the numbers to six or eight people.

The galley is semi-enclosed and very practical. Deep cabinets abound, and there is a dishwasher and full-height fridge-freezer. The worktop space is good and the electric hob and oven sit by the port deck door, perfect for ventilation as well as getting food out to guests.

Beneteau Grand Trawler design

Depending on how you plan to use the boat and taking into account the crew quarter’s storage, the aft lounge, and its U-shape seating can be joined by a long stretch of cabinetry or a smaller set of cabinets and a facing sofa. Either way, the design allows the lounge to merge with the aft deck seating, creating that flow of inside-outside living we want.

Helm Station

Set forward of the galley, well away from the salon, the helm station has a dedicated pilothouse feel. The central console can take three MFDs and although there is only one helm seat as standard (surely an omission by Beneteau) there is plenty of space for the second optional seat.

The two outstanding features of the helm are the guest seats and visibility. A raised and very comfortable bench runs to port, so you can get an easy five people up here, and what a view they will have. The inverted trawler screens have the slimmest of mullions and run through 180 degrees with a side deck door opening up the helm and sense of the seascape even more.

Beneteau Grand Trawler helm

Just aft of the lower helm is a direct stairwell up to the flybridge and the upper helm, an excellent and very practical big boat feature that allows the skipper to move between both helms with ease or for guests to simply move around the yacht.

The upper helm has a day cruising style with twin seats and more guest seating to make sure the whole gang can enjoy the ride. There’s still space for triple screens and the visibility is excellent, as it should be. There isn’t much going in the way of wind or spray defection but the spray will rarely reach this high and the yacht is really about 10-12 knot pottering.

Put simply, the Beneteau Grand Trawler’s decks are excellent. From the broad hydraulic swim platform and easy steps up to the main deck, it’s all safe, and secure. The platform is clever because of a small lip at the end of the deck that allows you to cross the transom even if the platform is down. There is, however, one omission. Most of the competition offers a forward lounge, while here we only have a sun pad (and it's an option). The win: two massive deck lockers.

Beneteau Grand Trawler design

Back to the rest of the decks and it is all degrees of good. The deep side decks come with very useful bulwark gates and protective overhangs as you move forward. The main deck aft feels big, with Beneteau pushing the seating to port and creating an open terrace with smart teak-slatted supports and a glass transom screen, ensuring guests enjoy a great view over the stern.

Beneteau Grand Trawler decks

The flybridge has the same glass aft screen, so those using the open aft deck get a great vista. The flybridge can be accessed from the main deck or the salon, by the helm station, a fantastic large yacht feature that makes getting around the boat so easy and helps helming and crewing the boat, especially if running shorthanded.

Beneteau Grand Trawler flybridge

The layout pushes the seating forward with a proper bar and grill serving guests. The lounge seating comes with a washed teak table, as does the main deck, that opens up for full dining.

The hardtop and its integral sunroof are optional but will likely be one of your must-haves, especially as there is no canopy system.

Value For Money

The Grand Trawler is a next-level Beneteau, a bigger boat, built in a different yard and to a higher spec. But some things remain very familiar, including a long options list.

Because there is more boat than usual, there are more options; Beneteau adds to the pain with items (such as those must-have helm seats) that should be standard.

The headline is a €UR 1.7M ex VAT base price that moves to around €UR 2.5M ex VAT for an admittedly high specification yacht that includes big-ticket items like a stabilizer (€UR 200,000) air-conditioning (€UR 64,000) and hydraulic platform (€UR 40,000).

The interior finish package we looked at came with an additional €UR 150,000 cost that needs breaking down but comes with a choice of oak or darker walnut cabinetry.

The hardtop and sunroof look like good value at around €UR 17,000 which is important as there is no canopy option up top. Teak decks come in at around GBP £34,000.

Looking to spend some serious time on board? Do you give relaxation and cruising ability equal billing? Does space to move and breathe rank high on your must-have list? If so, the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 is worth your time. There can be few other boats of this size or price, if any, that delivers such an impressive mix of interior volume and deck area. With a noticeable upgrade on finish and a knowing nod to cruising life, this is an impressive liveaboard trawler yacht.

Reasons to Buy

  • Ideal liveaboard layout & storage
  • Large crew quarters/aft cabin

Things to Consider

  • Low range for yacht type and tankage
  • Long options list

The trawler still rules the waves. If you want a serious liveaboard cruising yacht, no other genre delivers like a trawler and there’s never been a better selection to choose from. The more traditional trawler still exists but we will focus our attention on the Beneteau’s modern trawler style - by far the most popular, mixing functional design with long range, fast cruising and massive interiors.

It says a lot about boutique Turkish builder Sirena that any rivals list for a flybridge or trawler yacht under 25m will probably include one of its models. Here, the Sirena 58 sounds like a smaller yacht but is only 14in shorter and 3in less in the beam. It is, however, six tonnes heavier than the Beneteau and can hit close to 30 knots with smaller 641hp engines, suggesting a very good hull design. On board, the magnificent space of the Grand Trawler can't be beaten but the Sirena does offer a very good three-cabin layout with a full-beam stateroom and VIP. There is also a two-cabin option that maximises spaces for four people. The galley aft salon and flybridge are conventional flybridge in style.

Just as bold and imposing as the Beneteau, the Absolute Navetta 58 is a smaller yacht but offers up a massive three-cabin layout with its unique ability to create two suites amidships and forward. The salon is typically smart and spacious while the flybridge feels like an upper deck with a surround of seating. A top speed of 26 knots is matched to a 900-1,000nm range but with far smaller fuel tanks.

Azimut’s Magellanos mix classic trawler style with modern yacht cool better than anyone and this 60 is a great example of the range. A novel onboard layout has facing seating plans in the salon and across a superb aft deck. A mixture of flybridge and trawler style is found up top, with an open aft deck leading to a forward lounge. The 60 will hit 26 knots with its 730hp engines and reach 1,000nm at around 10 knots.

Outer Reef’s classic trawlers are joined by the more contemporary Trident range, the 620 is the closest rival to the Beneteau. Inside a three-cabin layout gives maximum priority to the owner and VIP, with the galley aft salon design pushing the lounge seating up by the helm. The 620 Trident has a range of 1,300nm and can hit 20 knots.

All of these yachts have foredeck lounges and a liveaboard focus below decks, with spacious cabins served by far larger en-suites than you might find on a flybridge yacht.

BENETEAU Grand Trawler 62

The BENETEAU Grand Trawler 62 is the result of BENETEAU’s collaboration with Massimo Gino (Nauta Design) and Amedeo Migali (MICAD). She capitalizes on the highly successful Swift Trawler range of practical, spacious boats, with a considerable cruising range, and she puts Groupe Beneteau’s experience in producing luxury boats to good use.

The Grand Trawler 62 has a distinctive displacement hull developed by MICAD, which aims to improve cruising range and efficiency, making it easier for owners to cast off on long-distance cruises. She is 18.95 meters long (62’) and has a hull beam of over 5 meters (17’10”). Designed for 6 to 8 people on board (+ crew), the boat has an impressive flybridge – one of the biggest on the market.

The interior is spacious and well-appointed. The galley can be completely enclosed. The VIP guest cabin in the bow has a generous amount of headroom so that you feel like you are in a hotel suite. Strikingly spacious inside, with volumes similar to much bigger yachts, and ingeniously designed, these large passagemakers also have enough space to comfortably house a crew. A satin wax finished wood, leather, and elegant textiles make for a stylish interior and exterior, carefully designed by the experts at Nauta Design. The midship owner suite makes clever use of the maximum beam so that you really feel like you are staying in a luxury hotel suite.

This passagemaker is over 59 feet and is designed for long-distance cruises. She has an excellent range, her spaces are elegant and practical in equal measure, and there is lots of room onboard.

Comfortable and seaworthy, with a cruising range of 900 nautical miles and a central raised helm station, she is ideal for slow cruises, favoring introspection in addition to getting away from it all or leisure activities.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 Review

In this review the experts of topRik share their impressions after testing the 19-meter expeditionary poweryacht Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 , which became the winner of European Powerboat of the Year 2022 in Displacement Boats category.

As always - a lot of photos, a list of videos, as well as reviews on this boat from well-known yachtsmen-journalists who create content for leading yachting magazines.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Displacement cruising yacht Grand Trawler 62 is designed for those who want to switch to an easy-to-handle boat and comfortably live at sea for months with occasional restocking. Beneteau shipbuilders together with MICAD engineers and Nauta Design made such desires come true.

Building on the ideas behind the Swift Trawler cruiser line from the same shipyard, Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 remains a stand-alone model with an impressive and capable displacement hull and on-board comfort rarely seen on boats of this size. We can safely say that reliability, safety, freedom of movement and comfort of living on board allow us to say that Grand Trawler 62 belongs to the class of trawler-type expedition superyachts with a long range.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

topRik team made sure from their own experience that the speed characteristics of the yacht declared by the developers are rather underpromised, especially if fuel consumption is taken out of brackets.

But usually, sailors try to use fuel efficiently, and not only because of financial savings. Accidents at sea are common, and it's always safer if you have a supply of water, food, and of course fuel.

In a practical study, which took place as part of the next boat show in France, topRik experts concluded that the least amount of fuel (31 liters) is spent if you go at 1000 rpm. Then, at a speed within 7 knots per hour, the range on a conventional Grand Trawler 62 fuel supply (2 fuel tanks x 1935 l) will be more than 1000 km. At the same time, the noise level from the engine is minimal.

But it is always a pleasure for any yachtsman to know that you can get out of the weather much faster. Our experience has shown that it is possible to exceed 20 knots per hour at speeds above 2400. It should only be remembered that fuel consumption will increase significantly - more than 11 times, and the range will decrease by 4 times. Keep this in mind if you do not want to get stuck in a storm far from the coast.

Review of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 by topRik Team

We must admit right away that the topRik team is not indifferent to the yachts that leave the Beneteau shipyards. A good third of our SimpleSail fleet, which is located in the marinas of Montenegro and Croatia, consists of Beneteau boats. Therefore, when a company needed a reliable and comfortable motor yacht for representative purposes, we first of all turned our attention to the trawlers of this shipyard.

Because we are accustomed to scrutinizing the boats we buy, we have gradually familiarized ourselves with all the models of the shipyard - Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 caught our attention as it was the flagship of the new Grand range and its sheer size made it stand out among displacement boats.

Who wouldn’t be conquered by these chopped lines, an almost vertical stem, a far protruding platform and a high flybridge roof! From the cockpit you’ll have to look up almost vertically to take a glance at the flybridge of Grand Trawler 62.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Very high sides are the promise of high ceilings in the cabins. However, the height of the headroom in the saloon and on the flybridge can be determined even from the shore. Our tallest expert (almost 2 meters high) immediately noticed this on the approach to the yacht.

At the same time, the yacht does not give the impression of a grandmother's Victorian house - all the parameters of the boat are harmoniously balanced. We, dealing with charters and observing the behavior of passengers, immediately realized that while being on the flybridge even the most restless ladies don’t have to grab the rails during rolling. That’s because, judging from our tests of the Grand Trawler 62 at sea, even with a high wave it moves like a tanker – stable and reliable.

Numerous portholes on the sides mean a lot of light in the lower deck rooms, where the cabins are located, and where we will definitely climb down later.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Like most trawler superyachts, the transom of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 is an open type. That is, there is no transom wall. This stylish glass partition between the two ladders on the sides can’t really be called a full-size wall.

Moreover, these ladders have lower steps across the entire width of the stern. This makes it possible to be stay near the water even without a platform, if you decide not to purchase this option. Then your beach spot will be somewhat narrower, and you will not be able to go down into the sea with the platform.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The platform can be used to transport a dinghy, jet ski or other water toys – it is quite spacious (9 m²) and powerful enough to avoid constantly using a lifting mechanism to deliver all this equipment from the upper deck during anchorage.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

And now let's go up to the main deck, which has this layout:

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

On the deck, there is a cockpit and a saloon, conventionally and with the help of furniture arrangement, divided into several zones, with the bow area serving as a large sunbathing area.

In the Cockpit

The cockpit on a motor vessel performs other functions in contrast to this area of the main deck of a sailboat, because the control posts for sailing equipment and the yacht itself are not placed here together with the helms, winches, baskets for halyards, etc.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62’s cockpit is about a fifth of the upper deck across its entire width. Here you can take out the dining table and even install a grill. But the latter is not really necessary, because the galley is located right behind the transparent partition that separates the cockpit from the saloon.

From the cockpit you can go up the ladder to the flybridge, and convenient exits to the side decks lead to the bow of the boat.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

We will certainly examine these areas a little later, but for now the path leads to the saloon. The see-through sliding partition mentioned above separates the cockpit from the saloon, but if fully extended, it creates a large area with enough space even for a crowded party if the owner decides to invite guests from neighboring yachts while moored in the marina.

In the Saloon

This is a clearly zoned space, divided by partitions and different levels into working areas: a control post and a galley, as well as social areas - a dining room and a living room.

The interiors are minimalistic, but functional and elegant. In the standard version, walnut or light oak wood, natural leather and textiles are used for decoration, furniture and partitions.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The saloon is filled with natural light thanks to glazing on three sides of the perimeter. Opening windows provide natural ventilation. Pay attention to the rounded corners of the furniture - this is always a concern for the safety of passengers.

Modern control post, located on a raised platform, includes a full-fledged chart table, a helm and a steering panel. The panel has all the necessary navigation equipment, including marine displays, communications and sensors for controlling engines and other ship systems.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

There is also a powerful throttle/reverse switch handle.

Comfortable chairs are adjusted to the needs of the helmsman in terms of height. And just look at that sofa there is on the port side - the captain can always lie down there or it could be a good place for some company.

Another feature of Grand Trawler 62’s saloon is an internal ladder that provides access to the flybridge in addition to the cockpit ladder.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The galley also has a door for access to the deck, and the galley itself is also separated from the saloon by a door so the cooking smells don’t spread to living areas.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

By the way, near the control post there is also access directly to the side deck. This allows us to go directly to the foredeck without leaving the cockpit.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

On the Foredeck

On the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 the bow doesn’t have a lower level, like some others. There is a large sunbathing area with several sun loungers, two spacious lockers for deck equipment and fenders, an anchor winch stowed in the locker, and a shortened capstan on the coaming for dock cables.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The sun loungers can be transformed: you can raise the back part or assemble a sofa out of the pillows – there are also holes for bottles and glasses on the sides.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

At the Flybridge

Remember we mentioned a possible party on board the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62? So, the flybridge is an opportunity to expand its scope. The view that opens up to you on the flybridge depends on which ladder you used to climb here - from the cockpit or from the helm station in the saloon.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

But no matter which ladder you climbed, it will still be the same 31 m² of space, which includes several areas: recreation, work, dining, cooking and tender storage, although this area can be used for other purposes - sports or dancing, for example.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Recreation area is located in two places - in front of the control post and to the left of it. This is a large sunbed and a comfortable L-shaped sofa, respectively.

The dining area includes a large fold-out table with sofas around the table on three sides. On the fourth side, if necessary, you can put folding chairs. There is a well-equipped galley with stove, grill, refrigerator, freezer and sink.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The flybridge roof is located about 6 meters from the waterline, so it is quite spacious and vertical. The diagram clearly shows the distribution of zones and the place for the tender, equipped with a crane for lowering the dinghy to the platform.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The Cabins and the Engine Compartment

On the lower deck there are cabins for passengers and crew, as well as an engine room. The layout of this deck with three cabins looks like this – you get the owner's cabin amidships, the bow cabin and the starboard cabin. All cabins are made for two with private bathrooms.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The owner’s suite contains a king-size double bed-island and bedside tables, has a dressing room, a large number of bedside tables and a table with a reclining table top.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

This table can be used as a writing or dressing table, and the dressing room, in addition to compartments for clothes, has drawers for linen, shoes and accessories.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Same bed from master cabin comes with several bedside tables in the bow cabin. These beds open up a large locker when the bed is raised. So there is enough storage space for all the necessary baggage.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The second cabin can be equipped with two single beds. This cabin has a porthole that provides natural light, as well as storage space for personal items.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

All cabins have bathrooms of different sizes, but all have a shower, washbasin, toilet, mirror and lockers.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The 4-cabin version has two cabins amidships, which can be fitted with beds according to the needs of the owner, as well as bulkheads.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Please note that part of the space below the cockpit can be equipped as an additional crew cabin, bathroom, or storage space.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

The engine room occupies the entire width of the lower deck, the equipment installed there ensures the balance of the vessel. There are engines, a gyroscopic stabilizer, a watermaker, air conditioning and other equipment necessary to maintain the life on board.

We know what kind of acrobatic feats are sometimes required to get to the right unit on some boats, and here we were pleasantly surprised. Even our giant did not need to fold in two to move inside the engine room.

Review Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Advantages of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Let's start, as usual, with the shortcomings instead. At the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 there is only one - this is the price of a superyacht. You can, of course, reduce the cost by eliminating the gyro stabilizer or hydraulic platform, as well as some other items on the optional list, but don't get too carried away.

We attributed real, practical comfort to the advantages. We are not talking about excessive luxury, but about the convenience of life on board that can last for months at the sea. Everything you need for this is provided here:

  • the ability to stock up on fuel, food and water for a long period;
  • comfortable, well-equipped control posts – even using them for hours is not tiring;
  • engine room, where you can move freely and equip all free places according to your needs;
  • galley in saloon, mini-galley on flybridge;
  • comfortable spacious cabins;
  • recreation and sunbathing areas;
  • the possibility of privacy.

By virtue of its design, the ship is safe even during significant sea waves and a lot of light and fresh air in the cabins provides a great mood and conditions for good rest.

Reviews of Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 from Professionals

We present reviews of the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 from professional journalists and yachtsmen who got to know this yacht at different times and under different circumstances. We tried to choose the nuances that for some reason were not covered in our review. Full materials can be read by clicking on the links to the pages of the leading yachting media, where they were published.

Jack Haines

The author of the popular magazine almost missed the Grand Trawler 62 sea trials as he was carried away by the wealth of choice at the Cannes Boat Show (oh, how we understand it). But, having caught up with the yacht and looking at it from the cockpit of the small RIB, he was able to fully appreciate the dimensions of this huge yacht.

From that point on, and later when he came on board, Jack was always amazed at how different this flagship of the new line was from the top brand Swift line of the same parent brand. Unlike the very practical Swift boats, the Grand trawler aims for elegance. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it was not built in France, but in Italy at the plant in Monfalcone, where Monte Carlo Yachts vessels are manufactured.

Starting to describe the main deck, he said that the platform has a capacity of 400 kg, as well as a crane, which is provided on the flybridge.

Jack believes that the yacht is designed solely for the owners who will manage the yacht and serve those on board, and therefore the layout is made with this in mind – not much space for the crew is available.

He remarked that access from the galley to the deck was a great idea, since the garbage will not be carried through the saloon when it needs to be moved to shore.

The author of the review suggested that the developers carefully listened to the wishes and comments of the owners of the Swift Trawler in order to ensure the convenience when cruising on the Grand Trawler 62. Undoubtedly, the ladder from the saloon to the flybridge is one of appropriate amenities, which was adopted by many naval architects.

Jack noted that in the saloon dining area, the sofa is only present on one side of the table, but he immediately added that optional folding chairs could be installed on the other side.

During testing at the sea, the reviewer drew attention to the fact that the effect of a high-mounted heavy hardtop in combination with a round bottom is noticeable here: at low speeds, the yacht begins to choke. Jack suggested that this process could also be caused by the fact that up to two dozen journalists were crammed onto the flybridge. The optional Quick gyro stabilizer will prevent this phenomenon, and at 8-10 knots it does not occur even without this expensive equipment.

John Higginson

The author of this review covered the arrival of the fourth Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 hull in Asia, predicting the same triumph for this line as the Swift Trawler.

He noted that, despite the ability to organize sleeping accommodation for the crew, this yacht is still geared towards practical owners. But good things can’t be cheap, so the cost of a Grand Trawler 62 is twice the price of the latest Swift Trawler 48.

John quotes a Beneteau spokesman for the region as saying that common sense is not sacrificed for luxury - luxury simply camouflages practicality.

Manufacturers and developers have drawn on all the experience gained since the day when the first trawler yacht was launched in 2003. With 1,300 hulls sold in that time, the Swift Trawler continues to dominate the market for fuel-efficient long-range flybridge motor yachts.

Beneteau listens closely to the needs of its clients to recognize their interest in yachts ranging from 50 to 100 feet. With the new yacht, the company hopes to repeat the success of a range of displacement yachts from 30 to 50 feet that had left all competitors far behind.

Yacht giant MarineMax data breach impacts over 123,000 people

Sergiu gatlan.

  • July 17, 2024

Yacht

MarineMax, self-described as the world's largest recreational boat and yacht retailer, is notifying over 123,000 individuals whose personal information was stolen in a March security breach claimed by the Rhysida ransomware gang.

The company operates over 130 locations, including 83 dealerships and 66 marinas and storage facilities worldwide. Last year, it reported $2.39 billion in revenue and a $835.3 million gross profit.

While the Florida-based yacht seller initially stated in a March 12 SEC filing that no sensitive data was stored on the compromised systems, two weeks later, it said in a new 8-K filing that the attackers had stolen personal data belonging to an undisclosed number of people.

This Tuesday, in breach notification letters filed with the Offices of Maine's and Vermont's Attorneys General, MarineMax revealed that the data breach impacts 123,494 individuals. It added that the incident was detected on March 10, ten days after the attackers gained access to its network, and it only impacted a "limited" number of systems.

"Based on our investigation of the incident, we determined that an unauthorized third party obtained access to our environment from March 1, 2024 to March 10, 2024," MarineMax said. "Our investigation recently concluded, and it was determined that the unauthorized third party acquired some of our data, which contained your personal information."

MarineMax also told the Maine and Vermont Attorneys General that the attackers had stolen names or other personal identifier information. Still, it has yet to disclose what other personal information was exfiltrated from its systems and if the data breach impacted both customers and employees.

While the company didn't attribute the breach to a specific threat group, and it's still describing it as a "cybersecurity incident," the Rhysida ransomware gang claimed the attack on March 20.

MarineMax entry on Rhysida leak site

The cybercriminals have since published a 225GB archive of files allegedly stolen from MarineMax's network on their dark web leak site, representing what they claim to be data they couldn't sell.

Rhysida also published what appear to be screenshots of MarineMax's financial documents, as well as customer or employee driver's licenses and passports.

This relatively new ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operation surfaced almost one year ago, in May 2023, and quickly gained notoriety after breaching the Chilean Army (Ejército de Chile) and the British Library .

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) also linked its affiliates to attacks targeting healthcare organizations, while CISA and the FBI warned that the Rhysida ransomware gang is also behind many opportunistic attacks targeting organizations across various industry sectors.

For instance, it breached Sony subsidiary Insomniac Games in November and leaked 1,67 TB of documents on its leak site after the game studio refused to pay a $2 million ransom.

More recently, the Singing River Health System warned that almost 900,000 people had their data stolen in an August 2023 Rhysida ransomware attack.
