Dr Phil & Wife Celebrate Anniversary on Lavish Yacht 47 Years after She Put Her $99 Wedding Dress on Layaway

Milly Wanjiku Ndirangu

The enduring love story of Dr. Phil and his wife, Robin McGraw, stands as a testament to the power of chance encounters and genuine companionship. Dr. Phil McGraw, famed for rescuing relationships on his talk show, found a love that required no intervention—his own. A twist of fate brought these two souls together nearly five decades ago, setting the stage for a remarkable journey that would see them celebrating their 47th anniversary aboard a lavish yacht.

Dr. Phil McGraw is a TV host and personality who offers advice from his experience as a psychologist. For years, he has used his show's platform to make psychology accessible to the general public by addressing important personal and social issues. But the spotlight isn't solely on him – his wife, Robin McGraw, is equally exceptional.

Robin is a #1 New York Times best-selling author who has authored several books on topics such as health, beauty, and family. She also hosts her own podcast called "I've Got a Secret," where she talks to celebrity guests each week about everything from running a business to new makeup techniques.

Almost five decades ago, long before Dr. Phil became famous, he found something truly special in his own life—his wife Robin. Their love story began in a rather unassuming setting—a family room shared by Dr. Phil's parents. Robin, a friend of Dr. Phil's sister, walked into that room, and their eyes met for the first time.

Curiosity and a touch of innocence characterized their initial exchange , with Dr. Phil's candid query, "Who are you?" setting the stage for a connection that would shape their lives. At that moment, neither of them was seeking love; Phil was focusing on his master's studies, and Robin was content with her career as an airport operator.

But as fate would have it, their paths were destined to intertwine. Their first date was a daring adventure, a literal flight into the unknown. Dr. Phil, a pilot, took Robin on her very first airplane ride. That night, Robin knew something magical was happening. She felt safe with Dr. Phil, and that feeling sparked the beginning of their love story.

As they embarked on their journey together, Dr. Phil and Robin faced the challenge of juggling burgeoning careers with the demands of their relationship.

Valentine's Day in 1976 marked a pivotal moment in their journey. As Dr. Phil radioed Robin from his return flight, he made a spontaneous date request, and on that very night, he proposed, catching Robin off guard. Dr. Phil's realization that Robin was the one stemmed from the simple fact that he wasn't even looking for "the one."

Their love story was unfolding organically, guided by the natural rhythm of their emotions. Their love was like a surprise that just happened, and it felt utterly right. Their marriage, a celebration of their love and commitment, was far from extravagant. With limited funds, Robin had purchased her wedding dress for a mere $99. She recalled :

"We both had two jobs each to pay for all of our wedding expenses. I remember putting my $99 wedding dress on layaway."

The dress symbolized not just a union but also their shared determination to build a life together. They got married in a humble church with the little money they had. As they embarked on their journey together, Dr. Phil and Robin faced the challenge of juggling burgeoning careers with the demands of their relationship.

Yet, their secret to success was astonishingly uncomplicated – they genuinely enjoyed each other's company. As Dr. Phil's talk show gained prominence, their bond only grew stronger. Robin's unwavering support, combined with their shared values and open communication, acted as the glue that solidified their connection.

From Simple Beginnings to a Grand Anniversary

Some of the best memories come from the usual everyday things, and that is what happened with Dr. Phil and Robin. Imagine holding a special piece of paper that brings back more than four decades' worth of sweet memories . In 2016, Dr. Phil and Robin celebrated a big anniversary, but their story began with a small wedding invitation.

It might not look fancy, but it's like a magic ticket that takes them back to the start of their journey. When they met, they were young and didn't have much. Robin is still in possession of her &99 wedding dress and their simple invitation card. She holds these things dear because they remind her of where their beautiful journey began.

They've had their ups and downs, just like anyone else.

The couple found happiness in simple moments, like when Robin was feeling sick and Dr. Phil took care of her. He knew she was special because even in baggy clothes and messy hair, she looked like a million bucks to him. Their love grew stronger with time, and they became more than just a couple – they became a team.

Dr. Phil talked about how he knew Robin was the one, and Robin talked about putting her $99 wedding dress on layaway. It might not sound like a big deal, but these simple things show how strong their love is.

Their life, once marked by youthful struggles and modest beginnings, has transformed into a grand adventure filled with laughter, companionship, and shared experiences .

Robin's joyous exclamation on social media captures the essence of this celebration – "47 years today with my amazing husband! Love is in the air. I love you, Phillip, always and forever."

The McGraws' Secret to Their Enduring Love

So, what's the secret to their lasting love? According to Robin , there's no such thing as a perfect marriage. They've had their ups and downs, just like anyone else. What's made their love strong for decades is the effort they've put into understanding each other. Those first three years were like a school for them – learning about each other, asking questions, and becoming vulnerable.

Dr. Phil Celebrates 47th Wedding Anniversary With Wife Robin During Trip to Italy: ‘Love Is in the Air’

Alfonso Ribeiro Says ‘Fresh Prince' Was a Career ‘Sacrifice’

As if their love story couldn’t get any sweeter, Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife, Robin McGraw , just celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. The longtime couple rang in their marriage milestone aboard a yacht on the coast of Italy on Monday, August 14.

“Love is in the air,”  Robin, 69, captioned a tribute to Phil, 72, on Instagram. “I love you, Phillip, always and forever.”

Phil also shared a post dedicated to his wife, revealing that they have been together since Robin was 19. Their youngest son, Jordan McGraw , and his wife, Morgan Stewart , tagged along for the trip. The talk show host and the businesswoman are also parents to their eldest son, Jay McGraw , who is married to Erica Dahm .

Both Phil and Robin posted a slew of photos from their vacation as well as some throwback pictures from the early days of their marriage. The boat ride along the Mediterranean seemed like the perfect getaway for the lovebirds, who currently reside in a stunning home in Beverly Hills .

Their love story first began in the ‘70s when Phil’s younger sister brought Robin over to their house.

“He comes into the room, and he goes, ‘Well, who are you?’ I thought, ‘Well, that’s kind of rude,’ and I said, ‘Well, who are you?’ And he goes, ‘Well, I’m Phil,’” Robin recalled. “So, I told him who I was, and we sat down, and we visited there in the family room for a couple of hours. He asked me out for the next night, and we’ve been together ever since.”

Their 1976 wedding was a dream come true. After more than four decades of marriage, Phil and Robin have been able to keep the spark alive by performing romantic gestures regularly.

“He always does the one thing he knows I really love and that is getting my favorite dessert for every occasion  —   wedding cake,” Robin gushed over her hubby. “That is my go-to dessert, and he knows I love it and always makes sure it is here for me.”

Phil and Robin, who are grandparents to four grandchildren, truly are happier than ever.

“He is so romantic, when we were still in school, we had a little apartment and we were just as happy then as we are now,” Robin reflected. “He went out to the park out near our little complex and took a knife to a tree trunk and carved a heart and wrote, ‘PM heart RM,’ and took a picture of it and had it developed and framed it. I thought it was so sweet. It was the most precious gift ever.”

Dr. Phil Steps Into Fray of Natalie Wood Death

dr phil mcgraw yacht

,  Newser Staff

dr phil mcgraw yacht

For nearly 40 years, the death of Natalie Wood has remained a mystery. First the 43-year-old actress was ruled to have died of accidental drowning after disappearing from a yacht she was on with husband Robert Wagner and actor Christopher Walken. Then, in 2012, that ruling shifted to drowning plus "other undetermined factors," with LA County Sheriff's Department investigators suspicious there was more to the case. Wood's sister, Lana Wood, has contended for years that Wagner was responsible for her sibling's death, and this week, Dr. Phil McGraw added oxygen to that theory by having Lana Wood and the yacht's captain, Dennis Davern, on his show for two days of interviews on the subject, USA Today reports. "You believe Robert Wagner murdered Natalie Wood?" McGraw asked Davern, who'd initially stuck with the accidental drowning story. "Yes, I really do," Davern answered.

He says he heard Wood and Wagner fighting, and when the noise ceased, he went up on the deck to find Wagner standing there solo; Davern says Wagner insisted they say Wood likely slipped and fell into the water. Lana Wood sticks by that, too. "Are you suggesting that [Wagner] knocked her out and threw her in the water?" McGraw asked. "Something like that, absolutely," she answered. Per Us Weekly , Lana Wood also recently appeared on a podcast in which she says that, shortly after her sister's death, Hollywood exec Rowland Perkins informed her Wagner was keeping her out of Tinseltown. "He said, 'Stop trying to get a job in production or acting. You've been blacklisted by Robert Wagner," Lana Wood said. A rep for Wagner, now 88, tells USA Today that Davern and Lana Wood are "despicable human beings" and that "they should be ashamed of themselves." (More Natalie Wood stories.)

Move over, Dr. Phil .

Robin McGraw took center stage at the Montauk Yacht Club on Saturday evening to celebrate the release of her Bella magazine cover.

McGraw, 62, arrived with cameras in tow at the mag’s annual Hamptons white party. Spies told us that they were filming a segment for an upcoming episode of her hubby’s talk show.

Dr. Phil is currently entangled in a $250 million lawsuit with National Enquirer after they accused him of being an abusive husband last month.

Also at the event was former “Real Housewives of New York City” Kristen Taekman who was spotted taking photos with fans and admiring the location, in which she was overheard saying it was her first time at the venue.

Inside Dr. Phil's Relationship With His Wife, Robin

Television has brought viewers a plethora of memorable couples over the years, from Luke and Laura on iconic soap "General Hospital,"  to Sam and Diane on "Cheers," to the lusty antics of "Bridgerton" sweethearts Simon Bassett and Daphne Bridgerton. When it comes to the world of daytime talk shows, however, it's impossible to ignore Dr. Phil McGraw and wife Robin, who regularly appeared together onscreen during the 21-season run of "Dr. Phil."

While they've moved on from that show, the couple recently embarked on a bold new venture with the launch of a brand-new show on their very own network. Through it all, from McGraw's early days as a trial consultant to having no less an icon than Oprah Winfrey catapult him to TV fame, his wife has been a constant presence by his side as a partner in life, business, and television.

The couple's story is long and fascinating, spanning decades, and is far from over. To find out more, keep on reading to go inside Dr. Phil's relationship with his wife, Robin.

Dr. Phil had just split from his first wife when his sister set him up with Robin

When Dr. Phil McGraw first met his future wife, he was coming off the end of his first marriage, having walked down the aisle at age 20 with Debbie Higgins McCall. The marriage ended just a few years later, with McCall blaming her ex-husband's multiple infidelities. Technically, he didn't get divorced, as the marriage was eventually annulled.

It was not long after that Dr. Phil's sister hatched a plan to set him up with her friend, 19-year-old Robin Jo Jameson. At the time, however, his focus was trained in another direction. "I was really going back to school, and looking for love was the last thing I had on my mind at the time," Dr. Phil explained during an interview with  Yahoo! Life . For their first date, Dr. Phil — who had a pilot's license — took her for a flight on an airplane. It was while soaring through the sky that she had an epiphany about the guy who would one day become her husband. "I really go with my gut always," Robin said. "I knew I'd be safe with this man."

Whether he realized it or not, the die had been cast during that fateful flight. "I do believe in love at first sight," Robin gushed, "and I fell in love with this man on that very first night."

Dr. Phil popped the question on Valentine's Day

While Dr. Phil McGraw may not have been looking for love, he'd found it in Robin, and their airplane flight became the first of many dates. As it happened, Robin was working at the airport, which made for a convenient place to connect when he flew back from a trip. "He said, 'If I fly in at a certain time, can we go out?'" Robin recalled for Yahoo! Life . She agreed, and he chose that very night to pop the question. "I was shocked," she admitted. "I was really very surprised. I was the happiest woman in the world."

From Dr. Phil's perspective, he had no intention of going through a repeat of what had taken place in his first marriage, one where two 20-year-olds who barely knew themselves quickly grew apart as they began to evolve in different directions. However, he'd come to reach a certainty that wouldn't happen with him and Robin. "I knew she was the one because I wasn't looking for the one," he explained. "You know, you're not thinking about it, you're not looking, you're not wondering. And then I met her and it just didn't seem like there was much point in doing all the things I was doing if she wasn't going to be involved. That's how I knew."

They got married in 1976

Dr. Phil married his wife, Robin, on August 14, 1976, with the wedding taking place in Wichita Falls, Texas. As Dr. Phil explained while interviewed for Yahoo! Life , their wedding was notable for its utter absence of celebratory libations. "There was no alcohol at our wedding," he recalled, "and that decision was made for us because we got married at the Baptist church, and the reception was at the Baptist church, so there weren't a lot of choices to be made here. 'Would you like cookies and punch, or would you like cookies and punch?'"

At the time, neither of the newlyweds was swimming in money. Robin's wedding gown, in fact, cost all of $100 — and she'd had to put the dress on layaway, paying for it in affordable installments that the couple recalled as being $5 per week. Even after the passage of so many years, the dress still holds a lot of sentimental value for her, and she's hung onto it. "Still looks pretty good, too," her husband added.

In August 2023, the couple celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. Dr. Phil marked the occasion by sharing a photo on Instagram , of the spouses chilling on a luxury yacht. "Forty seven years and counting and she can still hop up on the table," he wrote in the caption. "Been together since she was 19!! Happy Anniversary Robin. I love you!"

They became parents — and then grandparents

After their marriage, Dr. Phil and his wife Robin started a family when they welcomed the arrival of their son Jay, born in 1979. They waited awhile before adding another to their brood, with son Jordan making his appearance in 1986. As the years passed, both of their sons got married and started families of their own, resulting in Dr. Phil and Robin ultimately becoming grandparents of four: granddaughter Avery (born in 2010) and son London (2011), shared by Jay and his wife, Erica Dahm; and Jordan's kids with wife Morgan Stewart, daughter Row, and son Grey, born in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Appearing on Jenny McCarthy's SiriusXM talk show , Dr. Phil revealed that his two oldest grandkids call him Pops, while Robin goes by the more traditional Grandma. According to Dr. Phil, his experience with being a grandparent has lived up to the hype. "Well, I have to tell you, it's everything that you hear, where you have none of the responsibility and all of the fun," he declared .

If he seemed to be loving being a grandpa, it was still only a fraction of the excitement that his wife had been experiencing. "I have said before that I feel like I was put on this Earth to be a mother," she said while appearing on an episode of "Dr. Phil."  "Wrong! I was put on this Earth to be a grandmother!"

Robin made regular appearances on the Dr. Phil show

Dr. Phil's life changed forever when his jury-consulting firm was hired by Oprah Winfrey when she was sued by an organization representing Texas cattle farmers over a comment she made while discussing mad cow disease on her talk show. That led her to invite him onto her show and eventually host his own daytime show, "Dr. Phil." Since the earliest days of "Dr. Phil," his wife, Robin, has been a constant presence since the very first show. As she stated in a video in which she conversed with her husband, she felt it was necessary to be there for support — and never stopped showing up.

That, the couple explained while interviewed for Yahoo! Life  in 2019, was simply an extension of the inseparable nature of their relationship. "I have been to every taping, for 17 years now," she boasted. Robin, in fact, had been far more than just a spectator on the show; she also regularly participated throughout the show's 21-season run, dispensing her own advice alongside that of her husband and often serving as co-host.

In fact, viewers watched Robin become an integral part of "Dr. Phil" over the years, to the point that her presence there was no longer voluntary. "She has to be here now," Dr. Phil joked. "She worked herself into a job, is what it amounts to."

Their relationship needed to evolve to accommodate their fame

Thanks to the springboard provided by TV host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey , Dr. Phil's rise from Texas-based jury consultant to nationally famous celebrity was meteoric. Becoming famous so fast was a big adjustment for both him and his wife, Robin, and required them to establish some new patterns within their own relationship. Because producing a five-days-a-week daytime show is something of an all-consuming pursuit, "Dr. Phil" organically grew to become something they worked on together as a couple.

That led Robin to become not just a sounding board for her husband but an invaluable secret weapon. When prepping for upcoming broadcasts, he's come to rely on his wife to provide him with a feminine perspective that may otherwise have eluded him. "I go over the shows at night and she'll look at them and say, 'You had better not say this or that to her.' I say, 'Yes, ma'am!'" Dr. Phil said in a profile of his wife for New You .

Despite appearing onscreen together during countless hours of television, Dr. Phil insisted that he and his wife are actually quite private people when it comes to their personal lives. "You don't see us on red carpets a lot," he revealed during an episode of "Dr. Phil."  "Our idea of a good time is to hang with family, and be together. So we protect that time together really, really strongly."

They keep their arguments behind closed doors

While there has been no shortage of scurrilous gossip about strife in the marriage between Dr. Phil and his wife Robin, what hasn't been seen are bona fide incidents of the couple fighting in public. According to the couple, that isn't something that happened randomly; as they explained, they're certainly not immune to having marital disagreements but have made a conscious decision to keep those spats out of the public eye.

During an episode of "Dr. Phil,"  a viewer asked them whether they ever fought. "We don't argue and fight, we really don't," Robin said, but admitted they do occasionally disagree about certain matters. "But when we do, we keep it private. We settle those things at home." Realizing that television cameras tend to capture every nuance, they've been adamant about settling those disagreements off-camera so they can continue to sincerely present themselves as united on the air. "So we would never bring it to the studio, and having a problem being around each other," she added.

To Dr. Phil, that strategy is hardly rocket science, but simply common sense. "Of course we have disagreements," he said, "but if you're a professional, and you're mature, you take care of those things privately."

The dynamic of their relationship isn't based on codependence

One of the key factors underlying the relationship between Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife, Robin — at least in their early days as a couple — was their shared experience of having a parent who suffered from alcoholism. "We both say that we grew up in a home, in a life of uncertainty," Robin told People . "Because when you have an alcoholic parent who goes on binges, you never know what life is going to be like that day. It changed who we were." In fact, Robin explained, the fact that her husband declared himself to be a teetotaler when they met was a big selling point for her, given that she'd already decided that whoever she chose to wed, that marriage would be free of alcohol. "But it definitely defines who we are," she added.

Removing that dynamic from the relationship has allowed the couple's marriage to grow into one in which both have come to implicitly trust and rely on each other without necessarily being dependent on each other. "Robin is a very successful woman," Dr. Phil explained during an episode of "Dr. Phil."  "She doesn't need me for a damn thing."

When his guest, controversial author Rollo Tomassi (aka "the godfather of the manosphere"), interpreted that as meaning that Dr. Phil was "superfluous" to the relationship, the doc clarified by stating, "The fact that she doesn't have to have me to exist doesn't mean that I'm not essential to who she is."

Robin and Dr. Phil launched their own media company

When the announcement came down that the syndicated daytime show "Dr. Phil" was coming to an end after two decades on the air, another announcement followed, revealing that Dr. Phil McGraw and wife Robin were launching their own venture, Merit Street Media . Described as a standalone cable TV network, Deadline reported that the linchpin of the whole enterprise would be a new iteration of his talk show, "Dr. Phil Primetime," set to air five nights a week. "American families and our core values are under attack," he said in a statement to describe the new network's mission statement. "Together we are going to stand strong and fight for the very soul and sanity of America and get things that matter back on track."

Speaking in his "Phil in the Blanks"  podcast, Dr. Phil shared similar sentiments when he shared his own personal vision for Merit Street Media . "This is a family-based network that's got core values that I hold near and dear, that I think you will hold near and dear, too."

While "Dr. Phil Primetime" finally premiered in April 2024, taping had actually started in January. At that time, Robin shared some photos on Facebook , in which she and her husband are once again side by side in front of the camera. "It feels so good to be back in the studio," she wrote in the caption.

They responded to fake divorce rumors that were actually a scam

In 2019, Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife Robin publicly addressed prevalent rumors they were divorcing. "Not only are they completely untrue, we've been married for 43 years," he declared during a "Dr. Phil"  episode.

In fact, they warned viewers that not only were those online stories a lie, but they were also a scam seeking to part them from their hard-earned cash. He then laid out how the scheme worked, showing an online headline blaring that they'd divorced, and that Robin had moved out due to her husband's infidelity, with a button advising curious readers to click on a tab leading to the story. When clicked, readers were taken to a fake story intended to look like it appeared on USA Today, claiming that Dr. Phil was leaving his talk show because Robin hadn't told CBS about her massively successful skincare line, because she was a direct competitor to L'Oreal, which was supposedly sponsoring "Dr. Phil." If fans continued to click through, they ultimately landed on a page selling Robin's skincare products — or so they thought, since the products featured there were not the ones that Robin was selling, but completely different merchandise.

"So listen, don't believe this stuff you're reading," Dr. Phil concluded. "And for God's sakes, tell people not to click on those stupid stories."

They sued the National Enquirer over a variety of bogus reports

Fake news clickbait scams weren't the only source of rumors alleging strife in the marriage of Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw. For years, the National Enquirer had run such stories — a 2009 headline screamed, "Dr. Phil's Secret Divorce Deal,"  for example. However, when an Enquirer story claimed Dr. Phil had physically and verbally abused Robin, that  led the couple to sue the tabloid's parent company , American Media Inc. (AMI), for a staggering $250 million. "Dr. and Mrs. McGraw, after enduring years of the National Enquirer, Star, and other American Media Inc. publications knowingly and recklessly printing outrageous lies about them, their marriage, their integrity, and their character, have finally concluded that enough is enough and too much is too much," the couple's lawyer, Lin Wood, said in a statement (via  USA Today ).

AMI, however, scoffed at the suit when issuing a scorched-earth statement of its own. "It's a delicious irony that Dr. Phil, whom a California judge has called a 'charlatan' and the Daily Beast has called a 'quack' whose 'unseemly mélange of exploitation, celebrity parasitism and credential mining goes back years' has filed a lawsuit against AMI and accused it of being a 'trashy tabloid,'" the statement read.

However, just a few months after launching the suit, BuzzFeed News reported that the McGraws had dropped it. A statement from AMI seemed to imply a satisfactory settlement had been reached, and that neither party would comment any further.

Why their marriage has stood the test of time

In August 2023, Dr. Phil McGraw and Robin celebrated 47 years of matrimony. That's a long marriage by any standard, but particularly in Hollywood. Discussing the secret of their union's longevity, Robin told People that each had learned to prioritize the other above all else. "A lot of people say it is 50/50, but we both think it's 100/100," she explained. "So, we both focus on the marriage — and we did our homework before we got married. We sat down and with both said what we needed from our marriage." They didn't just hear that information, they truly listened, and came to understand what behavior would please or displease their partner, and then acted to emphasize the former and eradicate the latter. "We learned each other's needs and we focus on that still to this day," she said.

Dr. Phil discussed his marriage during a 2023 episode of his talk show and revealed why he and Robin had never once discussed divorcing. "Because we made a decision real early on that no matter what we're discussing, no matter what argument we may be having, no matter what disagreement we're talking about, the relationship is never the stakes for which we're playing."

Dr. Phil McGraw and his son Jay McGraw, along with their production company Stage 29, are partnering with DailyMail.com to create DailyMailTV, a new syndicated television series.

While details of the series are scarce—including whether it's a half-hour or hour-long program, what the format will be, and who will host—DailyMailTV promises to be bold and fearless like its news namesake.

"DailyMail.com is famous for shining a light on the most important issues that matter but might have been overlooked by everyone else," said DailyMail.com publisher Martin Clarke in a statement. "We're also not afraid to rattle some cages and demand answers without fear or favor."

The daily show will be shot out of the DailyMail.com office in New York as well as in the publication's Los Angeles, London and Sydney newsrooms. The show will focus on breaking news, U.S. and world news, crime, health and show biz, much like the homepage of DailyMail.com .

CBS Television Distribution, which is also behind Dr. Phil and The Doctors, will distribute DailyMailTV, which should mean carriage on CBS- and CW-owned stations.

"Collaborating with DailyMail.com is the ideal brand partnership as Stage 29 Productions continues to develop the next generation of innovative programming," said Dr. Phil, host and executive producer for the last 13 years of his eponymous daytime series.

Video content is becoming crucial for online publishers, and for DailyMail to get a TV syndication deal is no small feat. DailyMail and its sister site Elite Daily made a big video push at their NewFront presentation in May .

"We had no original video just a few months ago," said Daily Mail North America CEO Josh Steinberg. "We're very much an up-and-comer. We approach it with a sense of humility."

How Dr. Phil And The Late Shelley Duvall Felt About Their Widely Panned ‘Dr. Phil’ Interview Years Later

Where to stream:.

In the wake of Shelley Duvall ‘s passing on Thursday, many may reflect on her iconic performance in the 1980 horror classic The Shining . Some have also been reminded of her highly criticized 2016 Dr. Phil interview.

The conversation, seen by critics as unethical and exploitative, featured signs of Duvall’s struggle with mental illness, including her telling Dr. Phil McGraw , with reference to her Popeye co-star, the late Robin Williams , “I don’t think he is dead,” per Distractify .

When asked where she thinks he is, she replied, “Shape-shifting,” and noted that she’s seen him.

As seen in the promotion of the interview at the time, she also told McGraw that she “think[s] there’s a whirring disc inside [her]” and confessed that she was “very sick” and said she “need[s] help,” to which McGraw replied, “Well, that’s why I’m here.”

How to watch Dr. Phil and Shelley Duvall’s interview:

A recording of the full interview is up on YouTube.

In a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Duvall said that with respect to McGraw, she “found out the kind of person he is the hard way.”

The miracle of shelley duvall, shelley duvall’s ‘shining’ eyes were the audience’s portal into the overlook hotel, r.i.p. shelley duvall: ‘the shining’ star dead at 75.

“My mother didn’t like him, either. A lot of people, like Dan, said, ‘You shouldn’t have done that, Shelley,'” she recalled, referring to her partner, Dan Gilroy. THR reported that Duvall had “submitted to the interview without Gilroy’s knowledge.”

“He started calling my mother,” Duvall added. “She told him, ‘Don’t call my daughter anymore.’ But he started calling my mother all the time trying to get her to let me talk to him again.”

Meanwhile McGraw, while speaking with Chris Wallace during a June 2023 appearance on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? , claimed that he “do[es]n’t regret what [he] did,” but rather “regret[s] that it was promoted in a way that people thought was unbecoming,” per Entertainment Weekly .

“There are parts of that story that I haven’t talked about and won’t talk about in specific, but I can say generally that we worked with her family,” he said. “We worked with her for over a year off camera after that fact, and providing her opportunities for inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care. I can’t tell you the extent we went to.”

He added, “And the people that were critical of it, nobody ever asked them what they ever did to try and help her. And the answer is not a damn thing.”

As noted by EW , a Dr. Phil spokesperson had iterated similar sentiments in a statement to THR in 2021, noting, in part, that they “view every  Dr. Phil  episode, including Miss Duvall and her struggle with mental illness, as an opportunity to share relatable, useful information and perspective with our audiences,” and that Duvall “declined [their] initial offer for inpatient treatment that would have included full physical and mental evaluations, giving her a chance to privately manage her challenges.”

Dr. Phil was slammed after he was accused of 'exploiting' Shelley Duvall's mental health

Shelley Duvall died at the age of 75 this week, leaving behind an iconic film career - but one of her last talked-about moments happened off the silver screen.

The star appeared on the Dr. Phil Show in 2016 to share her struggles with mental health . Over an hour, Shelley told Phil McGraw that she believed Robin Williams was still alive and "shapeshifting," shared her paranoid thoughts, and told him: "I'm very sick. I need help."

On the show, Phil claimed that he was going to help Shelley and get her the best doctors to help her. Later in the show, he revealed she left the treatment facility after three days and "refused to take any medications."

He added that she was "safely returned to her family and boyfriend at home." He continued: "We are happy to report that we are now working directly with Shelley’s mother and are providing Shelley treatment from a group of local professionals who, due to her refusal to take medication, will use alternative methods to treat her."

Before the interview even aired, there was backlash when the promo video dropped as many believed it was exploiting the actress. Actress Mia Farrow was one of the vocal critics of the interview.

She took to Twitter, now known as X, to write: "There [should] be laws to protect mentally ill people from TV talk show predators like @DrPhil who is exploiting Shelley Duvall for his own gain."

Vivian Kubrick, the daughter of Stanley Kubrick who directed Shelley's hit film The Shining, shared a letter at the time on social media that she was "disgusted" by the interview and called for boycotts of the episode. "You are putting Shelley Duvall 'on show' while she is suffering from a pitiable state of ill health. Unquestionably, this is purely a form of lurid and exploitive entertainment - it's appallingly cruel," she wrote.

"Shelley Duvall was a movie star...whatever dignity a mere unfortunate creature might have in this world is denied her by your displaying her this way," she continued, "I recoil in complete disgust. I hope others will join me in boycotting your utterly heartless form of entertainment, because it has nothing to do with compassionate healing."

Years after the interview aired, Shelley admitted she regretted appearing on the show and didn't tell her long-term boyfriend, Dan Gilroy, beforehand. She also said that Phil kept calling her mother after the episode aired to try and get more content.

After the backlash, Dr Phil stood firm and said he didn't regret the interview, but did admit the promotion of the chat was "unbecoming".

Dr. Phil’s Precious Grandkids Make Him Smile! Meet the TV Star’s Adorable Grandchildren

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Being a grandfather is so rewarding and blissful for Dr. Phil McGraw ! The television personality and his wife, Robin McGraw , are the proud grandparents of several sweet grandkids.

How Many Grandchildren Does Dr. Phil Have?

Dr. Phil has two children and four grandchildren. The talk show host married Robin in 1976 after "accidentally" meeting through his youngest sister, Brenda.

“It was love at first sight — well, maybe at the end of the first night,” Robin told Closer in April 2018 of her instant connection with Phil.  “But I actually knew that first evening I sat and visited with him that he was The One.”

The couple welcomed their eldest son, Jay McGraw , three years after their nuptials in 1979. Their second child, Jordan McGraw , was born in 1986. Family has always remained at the center of Phil and Robin's universe over the years.

Who Are Dr. Phil’s Grandkids?

Jay married his wife, Erica Dahm , in 2006. They welcomed daughter Avery in 2010 and son London in 2011.

“They live nearby, so we like to spend a lot of time with them,” Phil told Closer of his bond with his two eldest grandkids in October 2016.

Phil and Robin have absolutely loved watching their boys become parents to their own little ones.

“Jay’s a great dad, and I tried to lead by example by showing him [the importance of] investing time in your kids,” Phil said. “I coached basketball for 14 years with my boys, and Robin and I never missed a game!”

Jay is very appreciative of everything Phil has taught him about being a good dad.

“I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be where I am, or who I am if it weren’t for my dad. He sets the bar very high,” Jay insisted. “People say he’s very tough, but if you really pay attention, he’s equally as supportive and he’s always got a good answer that makes sense.”

Jordan found love with his wife, Morgan Stewart , whom he wed in 2020. In 2021, the couple welcomed their daughter, Row. Their second child, son Grey, arrived in 2022.

Phil and Robin cherish all of the memories made when Avery, London, Row and Grey come to visit their gorgeous Beverly Hills home .

“They get to make anything, and I mean anything, in the kitchen,” the doting grandpa gushed over time spent with the little kids. “Avery’s specialty is Sprite-granola-cookie-bread-rose-petals-salt-and-pepper soup with jalapeños. But she does not eat it!”
