"Fun sailing
The trimaran’s very favourable weight/power ratio makes it possible to sail from the first few breezes. The leeward float participates in the anti-drift plane and allows for efficient close-hauled edges. The trimaran sails comfortably thanks to its low angle of heel.
Exceptional hability
The trimaran’s living space is impressive. Indeed the 3 hulls allow an unequalled habitability and original layouts, favouring well-being on board:
- A unique main deck owner’s cabin with an exceptional view of the outside.
- Surprising floats by their volume and aesthetics, a string of privatized living spaces allowing maximum privacy and comfort.
- Numerous and voluminous storage spaces: wardrobes, cupboards, hold and storage compartment.
The Cockloon® by NEEL-TRIMARANS is an open style layout created by mergering the cockpit and the saloon. Glass sliding doors seamlessely integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces resulting in a particularly impressive living area with an unbeatable view. The interior seating area, coffe table and storage unit create a veritable living room.
The wide sliding glass door can be utilized to modify the layout of the space according to the weather and personal taste. In the fully-open position the doors stows away completly to starboard, thus creating the fabulous Cockloon® effect.
Upholstery made from 100% polyester fabric, specifically designed for both indoor and outdoor use, in particulary soft and pleasant to touch." ~ Neel Website
At anchor / in harbours
The trimaran’s central hull, perfectly aligned with the mooring line, contributes to the stability and comfort at the anchor, and avoids the sway that catamarans can suffer from. The trimarans are perfectly autonomous thanks to many energy solutions offered in the catalogue, solar panels, watermaker, etc….
The dinghys are generously sized to ensure passenger transfers and facilitate provisioning.
Harbour manoeuvering are facilitated by the engine and bow thruster.
Construction
"To optimise the structure of NEEL-TRIMARANS, we collaborated with TENSYL with whom we have previously worked on the structure of the racing trimaran TRILOGIC.
TENSYL has made a speciality of the structural design of multi hull racing and cruising composites. Sampling is determined from the most critical cases of offshore loading on the structure, for example catching a wave at high-speed or sailing with the wind on the beam.
The analysis programs transmit relevant information which are compared to nominal values in the specs. Colour displays are particularly instructive in sample determination. The overall research programme aims to define type and quantity of construction materials best suited to each zone in order to eliminate unnecessary weight and apply suitable safety margins to load bearing elements.
NEEL trimarans are manufactured with materials and techniques best suited to their use, combining strength, rigidity and weight reduction.
- Hull, floats, bridges and roof are made in vacuum bonded PVC/foam and glass fibre/ isophthalic polyester resin sandwich structural material.
- Resin is infused through Fibreglass according to a sampling plan determined by finite element structural analysis gained from our experience in the construction of racing craft and offshore cruising. Depending on their role in the structure of the trimaran, the type and number of glass fibers are either unidirectional, bidirectional, 0 ° / 90 ° or bi-directional 45 ° / 45 °, Quadri-directional, TAFTA, roving or twill.
- Phonic and thermal insulation, along with floatation (unsinkability) are provided by the interior of PVC foam sandwich laminates. This closed-cell foam is perfect for the marine environment being virtually insensitive to moisture.
- Rigging and sails are designed and produced by multi hull specialists in La Rochelle.
- Interior coverings (linings, floor, upholstery) have all been tested rigorously in oceanic conditions before being selected for your NEEL-TRIMARANS."

Performance
" The trimaran NEEL is faster than catamaran:
As shown in offshore racing, the trimaran is significantly faster than monohulls or catamarans. This is also true for cruising trimarans, as proven by the last ARC rally won by a NEEL 47.
The superiority of the trimaran is even more obvious when sailing upwind, especially due to the rig:
- On a catamaran, the forestay pulls from the front beam, the mast compresses a central beam and the shrouds pull the two floats supporting the forestay and mast beam: this platform deforms in many directions. Consequently, it is then impossible to have a rigid forestay
- On a trimaran, the forestay, mast and mainsail tension are structurally bonded to one strong, longitudinal beam : the main hull.
This configuration, as per a monohull, allows for a rigid forestay and good performance up-wind.
Performance is also enhanced by the centered weight.
The extra speed of the trimaran is an additional safety factor.
Steering finesse
The finesse of the steering is a feature highly appreciated by owners of NEEL-TRIMARANS, especially those who have previous experience on high-performance monohulls. This feeling at the helm is a combination of several factors:
- A single wheel steering system connected to a single rudder by spectra lines.
- The most direct line path possible to optimize the sensations at the helm.
- The rudder stock on self-aligning bearings
- A deep rudder under the central hull contributes to the anti-drift surface and allows an efficient tacking.
NEEL trimarans are conceived for fast cruising
With an average cruising speed of around 10 knots, over 200 nautical miles are easily achievable each 24 hours. Speeds from 15 to 18 knots are often reached when the breeze freshens.
Weight centering is managed in order to limit pitching. The centre hull is rockered to facilitate tacking.
Floats are of a stretched form to privilege directional stability and advancement of the centre of buoyancy as a function of sail loading. The rigging is directly derived from racing trimarans, thereby achieving full cruising speeds up to twice as fast as conventional cruising yachts.
The sail surface area is generous with some 17m2 per tonne.
Finally, the trimaran configuration also facilitates sustained speed under motor propulsion. The low prismatic coefficient of the central hull means drag is very weak. The side floats are only very lightly in contact with the surface of the water." ~ Neel Website

Neel 47 Boat Review
- By Herb McCormick
- Updated: July 24, 2020
There’s no question that the Neel 47, designed by the ubiquitous, performance-oriented French naval architect Marc Lombard, was an outlier in this year’s Boat of the Year contest. After all, it was the lone trimaran in the fleet of a half-dozen multihulls, the other five being cruising catamarans. But it was also a winner, named by our judging panel the Best Full-Size Cruising Multihull for 2020 . When the votes were tallied, it truly proved to be in a class of its own.
A big reason for that was its stellar sea trial. Eric Bruneel, the company founder, earned his boatbuilding stripes as a longtime top executive at cat-builder Fountaine Pajot, but in his spare time, he campaigned fast offshore multihulls on solo transoceanic yacht races. Superb sailing prowess isn’t a passing interest to him; it’s the primary point of the exercise. And it’s the reason, when he struck out on his own, that he went into the trimaran business. The fact is, a well-executed cruising tri will outperform a fully loaded cruising cat. There. I’ve said it.
With a fitful Chesapeake Bay breeze fluctuating around 8 knots, give or take a knot or two in the lulls and puffs, it wasn’t a particularly windy day. But that was more than enough for the Neel 47. Even with a reef in the big, roachy square-topped mainsail, there was plenty of grunt in that primary under-sail powerplant. You steer the Neel from an elevated helm station to starboard, and the view is panoramic; sightlines and visibility could not be better. The boat is close-winded, tacking through 90 degrees with ease, and there’s never a moment of hesitancy like there is on some cruising cats, where you’re left wondering if the bows will spin across the breeze and complete the tack. I made a point of it in my notebook: “Turns on a dime, feels like a monohull.”
As for speed, given the conditions, there was plenty of it. In fact, both upwind and on a reach—the latter while flying a sweet asymmetric cruising chute off its integrated sprit—boat-speed figures basically matched the true-wind number: In 7.5 to 8 knots of breeze, we easily knocked off 7.5 to 8 knots. And the helm was as light and feathery as could be. It was truly a great sail.
Now, of course, every boat is a compromise, and the challenge with cruising tris, when compared with cruising cats, comes with the interior layout and accommodations. Cats are big platforms, and it’s actually quite easy to spec one out with a huge owner’s cabin in one hull, and a pair of comfortable bedrooms in the other, not to mention a good-size living room and kitchen on the central deck between them. But what do you do with a trimaran, where the outer hulls need to remain light and relatively unencumbered for performance purposes, not packed with palatial cabins and heads?
Well, the answer to that on the Neel is to make the central hull as comfortable as possible for the couple who owns it—in other words, to maximize the space for two people. It makes the Neel 47 a unique creature in the current fleet of contemporary cruising boats, where multiple sleeping quarters often seem to dictate the design brief. But with that two-person premise firmly established, the results are interesting and largely successful.
The Neel marketing people like to call the open, single-level layout in the main hull the “cockloon”: part cockpit, part saloon. Yes, it’s a little hokey, but it actually is an apt description. Most everything happens on this main floor: a nice back porch with seating and tables, double sliding doors to enter the interior space, another good dining area, a fine navigation station and adjacent galley, and a comfortable double cabin with wide windows offering sensational views. There’s also a huge technical locker beneath the floorboards. Note: no head. No, that’s forward, down a few steps in the bow, and includes a separate wash basin and shower. It’s innovative, a little strange…but it works.
There are a couple of basic guest cabins in the hulls, accessed separately (not through the cockloon). The message seems to be: You’re welcome to visit, but not forever!
In summation, the Neel 47 is a distinctive, inventive boat . It’s not for everyone, by any means. But it’s a yacht that will strike a chord for some cruisers, especially those drawn to the sea by the pure joy of sailing. Those folks? They’ll love it.

Why This New Trimaran Has So Many Problems
Welcome back to Trimaran Life. Last time we embarked on a voyage down the coast of South Carolina, aboard our friend’s 47ft NEEL Trimaran. But, as with all seafaring voyages, we encountered our fair share of challenges and discovered more than a few issues with the boat.
Some of you were left wondering why this sleek and shiny new vessel seemed to be plagued with so many problems. But, as seasoned sailors know all too well, no boat is immune to the harsh realities of life at sea.
But fear not, we don’t shy away from a challenge! Today, we are joining forces with the owners of the Trimaran, Katy and Craig, as we set out to tackle some of these issues. But, as with any boat project, things are bound to go awry, and not everything goes according to plan.
Plus, we’ll also dive into the reasons behind their move from their Nautitech 40 Catamaran to the NEEL 47 and whether they miss anything about their old boat.
So, gather your tools, roll up your sleeves and join us for some problem-solving. It’s time to get this Trimaran shipshape again!

Hello there! I honestly don’t know what to say, so I am going to tell you a bunch of random facts instead. I'm a fish eating vegetarian who hates spiders and loves snakes. I almost never took vacations growing up. I wanted to be Pippi Longstocking (still do). I misspell about every other word I write and still struggle with grammar. I love splurging on a good high tea (which is really hard to find these days). And whatever you do, don’t tell me I can’t do something, because then I'll HAVE to do it!

I have to ask, Nikki, what brand is your cropped sweater/where did you get it? SO CUTE!
“It’s cold in Florida and you’re still wearing shorts” at 9:50. That’s why I moved from Rochester, NY to Pensacola. I’ve moved from where “damn cold” is 5 degrees F to where “damn cold” is 5 degrees C. Loving the Forida life. Nice part of a boat is that you can follow the warm weather up and down the coast. Fair winds and following seas.
Spelling and grammar looks good to me.
Ha ha, thanks for the double-check.
Just a suggestion. When using the allen wrenches on the bolts, the short end gives you the torque you need to break the bolt loose. Then swap ends on the wrench so you can spin the bolt out without removing the wrench each half turn.

I was surprised there were only 3 comments. Whaaaaaaaaaattt is that all about?? This was a great video. I am very fond of most dogs. I found myself smiling when you interacted with Yosh the pup. I liked it when you made your list and completed each item, one at a time. Jason kept at it with the leaky hatch and solved it, it seemed. That is an organized group! It is sort of a shocker that you are here in the U.S. We are all used to you being out in the open ocean or on some far away tropical island surrounded by blue, clear water. Even though you are on the opposite coast of me, it is still great to have you here in the U.S. You might be jet setters but definitely boat setters. 👍🐶 Best Regards, Happy and Joyous.
Always looking forward to Sunday with the Wynns. Love your new four legged friend. I have to ask, what breed of dog is Oshimi or is she a mix?
Nice. Interesting and amusing Jason is so happy with the electric fuel transfer from the Jugs to the tanks. Amusing part of that was as he moves the pump to the other jug he says “Boom”. At the beginning I wonder if the dog was excited to get to the boat or off of the dinghy?
Jason is easy to please after so many years on faraway islands with few supplies. 🤣 As for Yoshimi the boat dog, she is also easy to please. Loves the dinghy, loves the boat, loves land!
What a fantastic plan you all have made! The charming owners get to go home to Scotland and you kids to to Boat/Dog sit, perfect! What a beautiful boat she is too. About how long will they be away? Are you kids planning on going back to the Bahamas again?
John Marquis
Love this video today… surprise to see that you didn’t know how to rethread a bolt by using a tap and threading tool they sell on Amazon for re-threading bolts and tabs. You just need to make sure if it’s metric or American standard bolt type.
We’ve rethreaded in the past but it’s not our boat and the owner didn’t have one. It’s hard to carry everything on a small boat.

Neel 47. "Fun sailing. The trimaran's very favourable weight/power ratio makes it possible to sail from the first few breezes. Set the Code-O on your Neel 47 trimaran and "take-off". Its like switching on the afterburners. Speeds close to 20 knots are not uncommon. Boat of the Year Nomination for the advanced Neel 47 trimaran. Innovation has its rewards. The Neel 47 trimaran is a delight at anchor. Stable as a rock and can moor in the shallowest of waters.
Neel 47 trimaran Jon Whittle . There's no question that the Neel 47, designed by the ubiquitous, performance-oriented French naval architect Marc Lombard, was an outlier in this year's Boat of the Year contest. After all, it was the lone trimaran in the fleet of a half-dozen multihulls, the other five being cruising catamarans.
This enables the Neel 47 to be easily single handed, quite the accomplishment for a 47' trimaran. The helm is light to the touch and the feel of the boat under sail is more similar to a monohull and the amas allow the Neel to comfortably heel by a few degrees. The Neel 47 easily takes through the wind and makes the most out of a broad reach.
The boat's 27′ beam is only about 1' wider than a catamaran of the same length. Consequently the NEEL 47 trimaran has exceptional stability which translates into less motion when at anchor and and higher sailing performance. In light winds under 12 knots the trimaran has more speed than a catamaran and in heavy weather a more comfortable ...
